Looking over Troy's Yelp reviews show a lot of what I call "One Hit Wonders". To me that means, no picture of the reviewer, often just a few (or less) reviews to show for it, sometimes debatable personal experience, and with some sort of revenge (for slights real or imagined) on their minds. For this long-time Yelp Elite, these reviews go to the very bottom of my credibility pile. I'm a loyal customer, even though I live in Nevada and only have Troy cut my hair if I happen to be in town and I need to get my hair back in control. My Dad and my Brother come here too. My last visit was earlier this week was around Troy's opening time (7:30 AM), with no wait, nice conversation, and back out to the care in short order. I enjoy our conversations and catching up on Campus and Community happenings. The Barber Shop itself has comfortable seating, good reading material (if I need to wait), sports on the TV, and just an all-around comfortable vibe. Free parking is available across the street. My last haircut was on the short side, which I like, while Gayle is still considering. But when one is nearly bald up top, shaggy sides and comb overs don't look so good to me these days. read more

I went looking for a new barber after the Cyclone Barber closed its doors after 50 years. I ended up at Troys on West St. The building has been around my entire life and Troy took over the business a decade ago. I believe Troys could be my barber for the next half century. Troy used electric clippers not scissors. All business is walk in only. Generous hours and convenient parking in the church lot across the street. Troys is a barbershop not a beauty salon. A cut is $17 and takes about 15 minutes. I recommend giving Troy a try. read more

I said, "I cut my own usually" (didn't have my equipment with me). I'm now feeling very uncomfortable with the "20 questions" and he flat-out says, "I won't be cutting your hair today." My jaw dropped as I have NEVER been refused service from a barber shop in my life!! He says, "You're frugal, cut your own hair usually, you won't be back to my shop again, I need regular customers." I said, "I'm in town for an event, needed ny haircut and searched for a traditional barber shop, not a chain, I'm here for that reason (supporting small business)." I then asked, "Okay, I'm traveling through, a tourist in the area, would you cut someone's hair then?" (Got him there, unless he interrogates every new customer this way). I stood up and my entire body was shaking I was so mad and insulted. I drove 3-4 blocks to ALL CUTS BARBER SHOP, greatest barber (owner), Raymond cut my hair as he has for over 50+ years (he told me) and he gave me a complimentary brush and comb with his business name and phone number in addition to an amazing (scissor) haircut !! $20 and I gave him a $5 tip. TROY could learn a TON of business etiquette and customer service skills from Raymond who greeted me as I entered his shop and asked, "how can I help you today". Started working in Ames recently and was looking for a convenient location to get my hair cut. Troy's was close, so I decided to give him a try. I can vouch for all the talk about his 20 questions. He spends more time telling you what he can't do than he does actually cutting your hair. His haircutting is marginal at best. The reason he is so picky about the haircuts he gives is because his skills are limited and can only do the most basic of haircuts. Don't go to his place if you are looking for a nice fade or expect to have your eyebrows trimmed. Because the location is convenient for my work, I decided to give him a second try. It was as if he was upset that I didn't come back soon enough, or he felt like I had gone to another barber since my last visit. Either way, the haircut was even worse than the first one and I had to listen to expectations of how frequently "regulars" should come in for a haircut to make it worth his time. As soon as I entered, the owner started interrogating me about where I have gotten my haircut before. I told him a shop down in DSM and he kept badgering me to give him the name of the place. He then said my hair would take too long to cut and it wasn't worth his time because I clearly would not be a regular customer and that I should know that a business owner wouldn't want a one off customer. He kept telling me that I wouldn't find anywhere else to accept walk-ins at his price ($22) and just went on and on about how his place is better despite him also saying he wouldn't cut my hair because I wanted a fade and that's not worth his time. It was a waste of my time to try and go here. I can't recommend this place to anyone and still never go back. Would give 0 stars if I could. read more

Drove by the place 10 minutes before and didn't see anyone in there, then he took 5 minutes to explain why he couldn't give me a haircut because it would take over 15 minutes. Troy is a one-man Army. He does a phenomenal job at cutting hair, likes to get to know the customer and their preferences, and does this all for a reasonable price. Good no-frills and straightforward barbershop. Cuts are simple (No all-scissors cuts) and fast, but most importantly done well. If it is your first time in, the shop owner will ask you a lot of questions, but the friendly interrogation is to your benefit. Go into the shop knowing what kind of cut you want to get and you'll leave very satisfied. And if you need a quick fix within the week of your cut, you can go back in for an adjustment no charge. This is the best price on campus, at 15 bucks flat, cash or check only. No need to tip either, as you are paying the owner directly for his services. I was planning on going here in a few days, but I won't now... I parked in one of the spots to get something from the local deli, I left my car for 8 minutes and when I returned the owner (I think) was following me and asking if it was my car in their spot. There were 2 spot open and yet they felt the need to berate me and threaten to call someone, he was tapping the sign aggressively asking if I could readI think they got my license plate numbers and im scared for my safety, after I told him to get away from me and that I was gone for less than 10 minutes I got into my car, I think he even tried to open the passenger door, I was legitimately scared. Mind you, there was a client waiting for him to return for the entire confrontation. If you do go to this place, probably be careful what you say or do. read more

I will never see troy again. thanks a lot for making me just as uncomfortable as I was at the groom room but for different reasons. seriously, I don't think I've ever apologized to someone for.. paying them.. to do.. their job. he didn't cut it as short as I wanted the first time so I told him to cut it shorter. then he began to subtly complain about how long it was taking. then, not subtly at all, he told me that I'm "burning" him by taking so long and not being happy with the garbage haircut he gave me, which is why I felt I should apologize. at the very beginning of the haircut, I told him I wanted a fade. he asked "what kind of fade? a skin fade?", then he showed me pictures of a skin fade. he said "I can do that, I just don't like to. it takes forever". immediately, this guy is telling me "I can do a great job, but I'd rather not do a great job and do a mediocre job instead because I don't want to do a great job". that's exactly what I got. a mediocre haircut that my own mother could have given me, and it would have been much cheaper too. don't go here if you want a specific hair cut. don't go here if you want a comfortable hair cut experience. just don't go here. read more

I sent my son into Troy's for a "$15" haircut, as was advertised in BIG RED LETTERS on the door. I gave him $20, so as to include a tip. My son came out and stated it was a good thing he had cash on him, because it ended up being $22 for the cut because as Troy stated, "your hair is a little bit longer, so it will cost more". Really? The sign should probably then state, "STARTING at $15". I feel he took advantage of a young, naïve kid. Definitely not Monte. I also had the same experience as Stephanie B....Troy stated he would not cut our younger two sons' hair because "he doesn't do kids". Well, that would have been four men's cuts that day, and because I wanted all done at once, we went elsewhere, and will continue to do so, especially after my 19-year-old's experience. read more

Troy is fantastic at what he does. After having my hair butchered at all the budget salons, and a couple of higher-end salons, I finally went to Troy's and had my haircut done right and at a low cost to boot. On top of being an excellent barber, Troy is a well-practiced small-talker, so even if you're a nervous zombie in public (like me) he can manage to drag a conversation out of you. Since my hair grows quickly and I need to keep it short, I have needed to get my haircut once every two to three weeks. Troy has kept his price at around $15 (recently bumped to $17, but that isn't too big of a deal for me) and it is a great haircut for the money, every time. Being a regular has its perks: Troy remembers who you are, follows up on things you may have said one or two cuts ago, remembers your haircut preferences, and keeps a good conversation (if you're willing to talk a little too). I read some other reviews where they commented on him being a little rude, but I've never had, nor seen, that problem while waiting to get my hair cut or having my hair cut. I personally couldn't recommend him more, especially if you need a quick and inexpensive haircut that also has a greater quality than a Great Clips. read more

By far one of the most unprofessional barbers I've visited. I went in a while ago for a trim and Troy (not having any customers mind you) turned me down for a haircut on the grounds that I A.) probably wanted a style that he wouldn't do and B.) was going to be a "one and done" customer. Either Troy is at full capacity of return customers and can no longer handle new ones, or he simply doesn't know how a business handles customers. Perhaps both. In any case, this is a business I will not support. The Groom Room does a great job for a nominal price and PCI does well for even less. I've been going to Troy's for almost two years now and I can tell you honestly that he is the ONLY place I recommend others to get their haircut assuming you want a typical men's haircut. My freshman year I tried out a couple of the other places around campus and yeah Leedz will wash your hair, give you a head message and put a bunch of product in your hair for you but they need you to make an appointment and pay $6 more! Troy consistently provides a high quality cut, a nice atmosphere, straightforward customer service and the best price for a cut in Ames. My first time there I had no cash on me and he let me keep my place in line get my cut and come back later with the cash and since that day I haven't gone anywhere else for a hair cut in Ames. I'm a regular (once every 4 to 6 weeks) and he remembers my preference of cut. Even uses a razor on the neck. He is not a stylist. If you have a simple style, want a quality symmetric cut and grew up with a barber shop in your neighborhood, this is the place. I forgot my wallet once. Since I'm a regular, he let me go get my wallet. If you are the type of person who sneaks in when a shop is near closing, I'd be upset too. If you are planning to try Troy's when he's in a rush (be it due to an already filled shop or when he's near closing time) he knows it'll take time and doesn't want to mess things up.
