True Love is far and away the most beautiful tattoo shop I have ever seen. When inside, you are surrounded by many works of art of incredible beauty. It makes it feel like the perfect place to get a really fine tattoo. My work was done by Matt Klass, and I recommend him highly. He faithfully reproduced the design I brought in, while rendering it more artistically than I had done myself. I was pleased with the amount of careful, high-quality work he accomplished in the time allotted. On top of that, he has a wonderful nature, and he was great to talk to. I absolutely love this place. Viktor is my artist and he is kind, gentle and an EXCELLENT artist. I have a very large piece on my back consisting of 5 butterflies from my left shoulder down to my right hip. The outline took approximately 2.5 hours and I just had the top two butterflies colored in last Sunday - that took 3 hours. I have another sitting scheduled for this upcoming Sunday and it will likely take another 3 hours. True Love is clean, friendly and the workmanship is superb. read more

two years ago i walked into a random tattoo shop in Oakland and wanted a Japanese mask tattoo. Dillon jumped to the chance, sat down on a 5 hour long session and did a beautiful mask. this was my first tattoo, i was scurred and it hurt. fast forward two years, i have two sleeves by Dillon and I'm still going. Now Dillon is at True Love, so updating my review. there are a ton of talented artists in this city; we're fortunate for that. but why did i stay loyal to one? easy. creativity in his art and personality. when i sat down for my first tattoo we shot the ish, joked around and had a good time. it really eased a lot of the worries. since then id stop in to the shop for more work or even just to hang out. he remembered me, my story and went with the given VERY traditional design at such a creative angle. i wouldn't consider myself biased, but i know a good business when i see one. sure, we're friends NOW. but i was a customer first... and any success business knows this is important. take a look at his site. or hell, even just stop in and check out his portfolios and beautiful art that covers the wall. he can take any simple design and make it a piece of art and unique. not a day goes by that i don't get complimented on my work and vibrant color. i feel if i had gone to any other artist I'd have "good" work but nothing as unique as i have. i have stopped in many tattoo shops in my time and you wont find that better than thou or no biker no care attitude. instead you ll find a guy who loves what he does and it reflects in his work and continuing business. on top of it, the prices are MORE than fair and he doesn't rush through your work to get to the next walk in. stop in, hang out and talk with him about your ideas. you wont be disappointed. But she was very friendly and said even though she was busy she had another artist coming in that could take care of me. I lucked out, I met Dan and he totally took care of me. Amazing experience, such a gem of a shop. (Picture attached) Wanting a quite simple tattoo, finding a shop actually posed more difficult than I expected. I randomly turned around to stop in True Love because my brothers birthday was coming to an end and this tattoo was for him. So happy I did this! I was greeted by a rad female artist (I believe Amanda Go who looks equally as talented!) who was working on a massive piece and went to get Matt Klass. Super sweet and easy to work with. Can tell he got excited once we were getting designs down and that was really awesome to see especially with a small tattoo. He altered it mid drawing when I changed my mind and was honest with me about placing - totally professional. He gave me my favorite tattoo and it's my smallest by far! so tattooers and tattooees don't play down small pieces it's still your work and if you're the one on the table don't feel like your artist shouldn't be fuckin stoked because it's not some huge commission. I have been going to Dave for a very long time, back before he moved to the bigger space when Matt use to apprentice under him and then went on to open his own shop. My most recent visit, I had a small piece done which Dave does not really do small pieces he likes to do big pieces so I felt really blessed that he would do my work. He has a very good hand and for a new person coming to get work done I would recommend Dave as someone who is patient and will make you feel very comfortable. He is known mostly for his Japanese portfolio which is truly stunning! He is usually at the Tattoo Conventions in the area if you want to see him i action before making an appointment, and you will have to make an appointment as he is very busy. If you ride a motorcycle you can park on the sidewalk at the shop. ;-) read more

Ross did an amazing job on my tattoo. I told him generally what I wanted and a few days later he had drawn up a design far more beautiful than what I'd pictured in my head. After a couple of edits to make sure it was perfect, we booked an appointment. It was a big tattoo and I'm a big wimp, so we did it in two sessions. Ross was incredibly patient and methodical so the end result was gorgeous. True Love has a really nice feel and there's beautiful and inspiring tattoo art on the walls. I worked with Ross, who was amazing! I came in with different pictures and ideas, but nothing sketched out. He listened to what I wanted and together we designed - he sketched- two beautiful pieces. He is an amazing artist. I have three beautiful tattoos from True Love Tattoo. Ross is a fantastic tattoo artist and has been working on me for years. He worked with me to create a back piece that I have wanted since I was 16 or so and I love it! He also did a beautiful vine going down my leg with no black outlines so that it looks totally natural and a moth that people tell me looks like it is so real it looks as if I pressed it to my leg and it stayed there. There is still a lot of work to do on my back piece and I am so happy that I get to have my work done by such a fantastic artist. In all honesty I don't think I would trust any other artist to tattoo me after the beautiful pieces he has done. I don't think anyone could compare. read more

First off let me say I didn't exactly find this place. Like most of us who get 'tattooed' the shop kind of finds you. I would like to say that there were cosmic forces in the universe drawing me there, but really my fiance found it by default. If one were to drive down San Pablo (from Richmond to Oakland) they would invariably encounter several tattoo shops from the obvious to the not so obvious. This one however was open. Yes that's right, just open. She had an existing tattoo that was in desperate need of a cover up and from that an entire back piece appeared under the artistic direction of one of the three artists. You can't go wrong here. All of the artists are wonderful down to earth people. Just be sure to book in advance. read more

I am half way thru getting a full back piece from Dan at true love tattoo. I met Dan a while back while he was working at another tattoo shop. Really nice guy and I was impressed by tattoos I had seen that he had done. I went in and talked with him about getting a big tattoo and he seemed into it. He called me a bit later with some drawings and I was impressed he listened to what I wanted and nailed it. We are about 4 sessions into it and I would recommend Dan to anybody. This place is just AWESOME, Dave and Alex are just super cool, very talented and funny artists. Victor, the other tattoo artist, is freaking hillarious! The vibe in this place is the best. I first heard of them through people at the climbing gym, whom had been tattoed my DAve and Victor. THe artwork and details were amazing especially on large tattoos. True love could showcase their work at this gym. So after a few interactions and discussion about traditional japanese tattoos with Dave, we began the half sleeve. I spent a bit more than initially expected but the level and quality of details is just priceless. As they say, good tattos are not cheap and cheap tattoos aren't good Altogether we did like 15 hrs worth of tattooing and the outcome is more than I bargain for. Alex, the famous apprentice/kickass climber is very talented too but she's very modest. Won't hesitate to get the next one done by her. read more

In getting my first tattoo, I learned about Dave through a few friends of mine who had had extensive work done on them. I liked the artwork and asked about their experiences as I was understandably a bit nervous. They all highly recommended him, and so I made an appointment. Upon meeting Dave, I explained a general idea of what I would like my tattoo to look like. He walked me through the process and offered some great suggestions of additions and ways to make the tattoo ideas come together. He said he'd need a bit of time to draw everything up and contacted me a few weeks later to come and see the design. When I saw the design, I was very pleased to see that he was able to make my vision into a great looking drawing. We set up an appointment and a few weeks later, I was back to begin work. I found that Dave was very helpful in putting me at ease for my first work. He explained everything, and was very smooth with the actual tattooing. He has a great attitude, and makes the time fly by. I was surprised that it hurt much less than expected. He did an upper arm piece for me in several different 4 hour sittings, and I was very pleased when the work was complete. A few years later, I went back to him for a piece on the other arm, and was even happier with the results. In the future, I hope to get some more work done, and it will certainly be with Dave. read more

made an appointment with Dan Herihly at true love and he is the shit, mellow dude with a great vibe. me and my girl went in, me for a new tat and her for a touch up on an older piece. mine came out extraordinary! he really made my vision come to life with flawless lines and excellent color and shading. hers came out awesome as well, fresh color and added detail looks a million times better. I love Ross! I've had two tattoos done by Ross: both are unique, kinda weird, and I love them both--and I get a ton of compliments on em. He was a pleasure to work w/ both times: professional, laid-back, thoughtful, attentive, and really really talented. The first one I got from him was a super quick deal--a few words in my husband's handwriting (and he did one on my husband in my handwriting). We wrote out the tattoos and he copied them EXACTLY---no small feat, really. The second one was much more detailed (an illustration from a very old children's book), and it was also a cover-up of a crappy old high school tattoo. What I loved was how Ross respected the original image, and worked hard in his drawing to replicate it, but he also used his eye and experience to make some really great suggestions about how to place it, size it, and make a few other small changes. He was right on, and the tattoo turned out great (and fully covered up the old one). Ross is sweet and funny and is a very focused, careful tattoo artist. He also makes rad raunchy hilarious sculptures! I'll be getting in touch with him soon for my next piece... read more

Whilst working within this industry and seeing how it's run, all of the staff feel over worked and used by her. The main artist who is acting as a manager, tattooist, and promoter all within the first year of tattooing, should have help and support which Cat was not giving, she only cares about money. For a prime example, Cat didn't continue the let on the flat which made the main artist move out with know here to go, so she ended up staying in the building site above the studio with no running water, heating, shower etc. for days to even weeks. I feel it is extremely disgusting that an owner of a business will allow this to happen. Another example is refunds. Cat messed around a customer with their booking numerous times, and when they asked for a refund she denied it and would then ignore all contact with this customer who has been in numerous times. I was left to deal with most of it, along side other staff that agreed that the customer is well within the rights to a refund. Though Cats main concern is money, she didn't allow this for over a week until she had to face the customer after numerous attempts to meet with her. I feel it is necessary to have my say and make you aware of this business. read more

I just finished my leg piece there by Amanda. She did a great job and great to work with. She took my ideas and made them 10X's better. She made me feel comfortable even then i was in a lot if pain and made sure i was doing ok. Everyone in the shop is super nice and welcoming.
