So, I was apprehensive about signing up for this thinking that there would be more experienced backpackers and I would be a burden holding them up. That turned out to be an irrational fear. Most people did have camping experience but most were new to backpacking. I rented all the gear, literally everything including the food. Upon arrival, I was handed a backpack with all my gear inside. I wandered off to find a place to put my tent and laid it out on the ground. And that was literally all I could do. I had no idea how to set it up. One of the four guides working on this hike (I could write another whole review about how awesome the support crew was. Knowleable, attentive and patient. Amazing people.) quickly showed up and helped me set it up. That first evening the guides cooked an amazing dinner for us while we listened to lectures of how to conduct ourselves out on a hike. This included how to filter water, use the restroom if there isn't one, how to use our camp stoves and so much more. I have to say, I learned so much on this trip, it really exceeded my expectations. The next morning we packed up and started on the hike. The hike was challenging. Not being familiar with carrying a backpack there was definately a learning curve. But all the people that started (some older than me and some younger) finished the hike and you could tell we were all pleased with ourselves. Although really tired, we were all smiling at what we had accomplished. Along the way we filtered our drinking water from streams and that evening ate some "delicious" freeze dried food using our camp stoves. The next day we woke up and finished the loop back to our cars. My biggest takeaway from this experience was how much I learned and actually put to use. It's one thing to read about something but you don't really learn it until you can actually put it to use. Now to Tony, the co-owner and lead on this trip. Loved the guy. Super helpful, really pleasant and knows what he is doing. This trip was exceptionally well run and the guides he had helping him were just amazing. If you have literally no experience (like me) or have done this a million times I think you would enjoy this excursion. read more

Getting old can suck. However, not as much as getting older and failing to live your life with intent so sure glad I found the folks at True North. Sorry to come out all Zen and touchy and feely and stuff, but I am fresh off the Advanced Backpacking Bootcamp hosted by True North. It put a Zen like happiness into my head. Frankly, it was awesome. I digress you did not come here to listen to my tales of solid alternatives to therapy for finding my inner peace. You came here to hear about this totally legit, truly professionally run, safety orientated, no person left behind outfitter and expedition company. Well you came to the right place. There are probably as many stories as to "why" people will seek to hit the outdoors. Mine was failure to strap a pack on for the better part of 24 years and hit some trails. I logged quite a few miles out west during the first half of my life so I was familiar albeit not well outfitted and not very knowledgeable on mid-west resources and locations. Those circumstances along with a commitment to stop making excuses for another year led me to True North Expeditions (TNE). I cannot stress enough; this is an absolutely solid outfitter and expedition leader in the mid-west of all areas. They were able to rent me the gear I needed to fill the gaps in my inventory. That gave me a chance to get out on the trail for less coin as well as make informed decisions on investments as the True North team is a true encyclopedia of knowledge. The three-day trip included a shorter night hike to orientate us on the disorientation of such an experience, a longer day hike and then another shorter day hike the last day. Transportation was also provided. Everything was impeccably planned, and every contingency thought through. Safety was first and foremost. For those that may want a basic immersion, there is a basic / intro backpacking class. Additionally, there are other expeditions such as a winter expedition involving snowshoeing and cross-country skiing while staying in cabins, rock climbing, yoga and kayaking trip, boundary waters canoe trip and many, many players to be named later I'm sure. I highly recommend TNE for both new and experienced backpackers. I have gone on multiple trips with TNE and our group participants have ranged from people who had never even camped before, those with limited experience backpacking, to people who had organized multi-day trips themselves (not to mention ALL ages and backgrounds!). The versatility of the TNE guides allows them to cater to all people with various levels of experience and various needs on the trail. I've been asked by friends WHY I pay to go on backpacking trips "when I could organize it myself" and there are a few reasons: (1) My first trip was to meet like-minded people who are into the same hobby as me, since I don't have many friends who backpack. I have now come back for RETURN trips because (2) the guides have been excellent resources both on and off the trail. I have gotten gear reviews, tips and tricks, gotten to test out new/alternate gear, route planning tips, and each event I come back with new questions to learn about. (3) I am busy. To be honest, I do not have the time, energy, or desire (not to mention 20+ years of knowledge backing them up) to plan my own trip. TNE takes all the effort out and all I have to do is show up. They plan the route, arranging shuttles, obtain permits, scout out campsites and water stops, prepare us for inclement situations, are first-aid prepared, and overall bring heaps of knowledge and skill to the events. This past weekend I attended the BWCA event where we spent 3.5 days canoeing and camping. I was in Tony and Mel's group and they were both amazing. Very helpful when we needed it but also showed us we were tough enough to do what we needed to do without help. There were people in my group that were complete canoe "newbies" and did not struggle on this trip, yet we were challenged just the right amount. BWCA is absolutely breathtaking and should be on everyone's bucket list. I read the 1 star review that was also posted today. I didn't really want to comment on it, but I think it needs to be brought up. That particular person had an attitude the second we walked through the door. When I heard she was going to be a part of our group, I was dreading the weekend, but luckily to us and apparently her, she was moved back to the other group. We were also by no means the "fast group". There was a mixture of levels in both groups. I did not have the experience on the trip she claims to have and would recommend True North Expeditions all day long. Yes, the first evening when we all arrived was hectic, but that was the outfitter's issues, not TNE. These kinds of things happen and if you don't think it will, don't go on a trip like this. I, for one, cannot wait to sign up for the next trip. read more

A little over 24 hours post hike, and I can tell you now for the first time in my 40 years on this earth I finally felt like I belonged. I've had glimmers of that feeling on adventures with my family, but never the complete feeling of release from carrying my daily burdens. The internal ones and the external ones. And I don't know if anyone in my actual real life would understand this explanation but I think you guys might. Thank you for allowing me to experience the best therapy my money could ever buy. I know now that I can venture off onto the AT and do that. I feel it's what I was born to do. I love teaching, but I don't love the confines of the classroom, the politics, and the anger directed at teachers. But hiking out there this weekend and getting to share some of the little knowledge that I had without the actual experience that was such a powerful day for me. Meeting people who understand the joy in carrying heavy shit and walking through the woods... That's, that's once in a lifetime. So thank you True North Expeditions, Inc. thank you Tony, and Jen, and Sarah with an H, and Melissa. I look forward to my next adventure, and I can't wait to see you guys again. read more

Just got back from my second backpacking trip with True North Expeditions. This one was the Advanced Backpacking Bootcamp on the River to River trail in Southern Illinois. My daughters and I did the beginners bootcamp earlier this year and had a great time so I felt comfortable signing up for the Advanced class on my own. As it turned out there were a number of us who were in both classes so it was nice to see some familiar faces. I have learned so much from just these two outings! Most importantly I learned that is it possible for me to do this, and that I really enjoy it. It was challenging but not overwhelming especially since I trusted our guides Jen, Tony and Sarah. They kept track of everyone and were right there when needed with assistance or advice. Since facing the challenges on these two trips, I feel more confident that I can backpack with my family or even on my own but I'm also looking forward to more adventures with the True North family! read more

I had some backpacking experience, but it was over a decade ago. As I compiled a long list of skills I needed to develop, it became overwhelming...and then I saw the advertisement for Backpack Bootcamp. I hesitated to book, but the price was so reasonable for what we got -- access to a learn in a safe, yet challenging, environment, and to real world expertise and knowledge. The True North team provided an amazing weekend from start to finish and were accommodating in every step of the way. Backpack Bootcamp is the perfect blend of challenging without being unattainable, and the guides were wonderful cheerleaders and knew their stuff. They taught and empowered all of us. I was signed up for the beginners backpacking trip. First of all I felt that the organizers did an extremely good job with communication prior to the date of the event. There were multiple emails sent out regarding what we needed to do, what kind of gear we needed to have. The emails also provided an opportunity to ask questions. Upon arriving at the event I felt that everything was thoroughly organized and well thought out. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Throwed lectures we had in the evening I felt that important knowledge was shared with us and again the opportunity for questions was present. I personally was not up to the skill level to complete the event but the organizers went out of their way to offer me several solutions to finish. The guides were all supportive and encouraging. I will be returning to them again and look forward to completing the course this time! read more

Had my second trip with True North Expeditions and I'm signed up for two more! This was another new experience of canoe travel in the Boundary Waters. Just like my first backpacking trip, all questions were answered thoroughly, some with personal phone calls from Tony. Lots of details sent out ahead of time. While on the trip, some plans were changed as a group due to how people were feeling and weather conditions. Good times had by all as leaders Tony and Melissa helped us get our stuck bear bag down . Leaders are a lot of fun, and seem to love when we have fun also. Interesting discussions throughout the trip, especially near the end. Everyone pitched in on the difficult portages, especially Tony, who certainly carried more than his share. Went home so happy with the experience and awesome group and can't wait for the next trip! read more

Tony and Melissa and the True North crew exceeded my expectations! I was able to be on the most recent trip to the Porcupine Mountains in the UP of Michigan. The expertise that Tony showed with navigating the trails and the experience and joy that Melissa brought to teaching yoga were exceptional! I enjoyed meeting fellow back-packers on the trip and making new connections and friends! Everything from sign-up to taking down our tents on the last day was clearly explained and easily accessible! I recently returned from another amazing trip with TNE. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area offers a unique experience of being immersed in unadulterated natural beauty and solitude. Challenging portages were balanced with serene paddling. The trip was well-planned and organized. Tony and Jen were great about answering my questions about the trip and needed gear. TNE guides are patient and encouraging with those of us that have less experience in backcountry skills. I had an issue with my bear bag that took an inordinate amount of time to resolve. I participated in True North Expeditions Beginners Backpacking Bootcamp in April as a total beginner. Owners/guides Tiffany and Tony were absolutely the best people I could have learned from. They were extremely helpful in getting ready for the trip, encouraging, so detail oriented, have ALOT of knowledge in backpacking and camping, and they were absolutely the best. They made me feel welcomed, empowered, and encouraged. I had so much fun meeting and spending such wonderful weekend with other participants. I had a blast on a 3 day backpacking trip to the Porcupine Mountains with the True North crew this fall. It was a trip for "experienced backpackers" but time was still taken to talk to me about trip prep and the extensive event write up was impressive. It was a good check list for me, not having backpacked in a while. They are friendly, welcoming, knowledgable, funny and made me feel like part of the team rather them just a guest. We struggled through the muggy heat and up those hills together. When it was clear I was having a hard time and reaching my limit concern and motivation was given. I would rate TNE 10 stars if I could! I Went to the intro to backpacking course this weekend and it was absolutely fantastic! I chose the option to rent gear as I am a complete backpacking newbie all the gear was in great shape and everything was explained on how to set up and use everything, Tony and Jen were so patient and wonderful when it came to asking questions and explaining everything you can tell how passionate they are about the outdoors and that makes it even more fun it was bitter cold overnight and despite that I couldn't complain about a single thing I'm already looking forward to the next event this definitely won't be my last time with TNE!! read more

I haven't backpacked in over 20 years. Gear has changed so much since then. Where would I begin? Would I even still like it? I signed up for the Beginners Backpacking Bootcamp, not knowing what to expect. I was nervous. Jen and Tony responded to all of my questions in a timely manner, even before the camp started. Once I was there, all of my fears went away because it was clear that I was in good hands. I rented their gear (all name brand products) & purchased their meal plan (more than enough food). I love going on trips with this group! A couple of weekends ago we went to the Porcupine Mountains in the UP. It was a wonderful time. We stayed at a picturesque cabin in the woods. The trip and atmosphere was much needed. I feel so alive being in nature. Tony cooked warm meals for us while we relaxed and shared stories with one another. There were 8 of us total, so it was a very intimate bonding experience. We went snowshoeing during the day and went on amazing night hikes while the snow came tumbling down. I tried my first beginner backpacking trip in April 2018 and I was totally out of shape. The owner Tony was very helpful and encouraging. He would stay back to walk with the slow hiker (me). It made me feel safe and enjoy the trip without pressure because I was the slow hiker. Fast forward to July/August 2020, I had attended many trips with True North because of the reasonable prices and the beautiful places where we visited. I have seen the company grows. I attended the Beginner BootCamp with True North in April 2018. It was an amazing weekend. I was a newbie without knowing anything about backpacking. Tony and Tiffany were very knowledgeable and encourage. They ensured our safety through the trip as their highest priorities. Where do I begin? The trip was fantastic and challenging and everything I hoped it would be! Tony and Tiffany are great guides who worked together to educate us and keep us safe on the trail.
