I live about 3/4 of a mile from this True Value store, and it is always my first stop when looking for odd hardware items. We bought an old Victorian in downtown DC, and I work on it on the weekends. I never cease be amazed at the random stuff I need, and I will call ahead to see if they might have something as eclectic as the random bulbs, valves, hardware, etc., that I need. They have always had it, and it saves me a trip out to the burbs to some monster store. And they are helpful and friendly to boot. read more

They have absolutely everything and a friendly staff member greets you at the door every time to help you find it. They'll also leave you to do your thing if you say so. 17th St. Hardware is what a city hardware store should be. They have everything you could possibly want for a range of apartment fixes and projects. And its certainly a place full city character. A maze of nooks and crannies packed to the gills with run-of-the-mill nuts and bolts and "what-the-heck-do-you-use-this-for?" hardware oddities. Go up two steps, weave around the corner, down a passage, down two steps.. -- finding what you need is almost as fun as the satisfaction of fixing your own kitchen tap. But no worries in picking out and finding the right things -- the folks at 17th st. Hardware seem to know just what you need, and exactly on which shelf to find it. I needed to post some "reserved parking" signs on a street with few trees, and by goodness, 17th st. hardware had the perfect orange traffic cones tucked away on a top shelf. And some of the guys working there are entertaining as heck -- city characters in their own right. I've read a couple of comments on Yelp that don't rate 17th that well -- which I find curious. No. Its not Home Depot. If you're doing a major reno job yourself, maybe you really need a contractor, not counter-help at a hardware store. Regarding key copies -- yeah, I've had a few come out not so great there, but this seems to happen everywhere. Yes, they are more pricey than Lowes etc. but you don't need to waste time and gas to get to 17th st. On May 12, 2015, I went to my local hardware store. Having called before hand to explain my confusion about having paid for a Quart of paint when the label on the paint can indicated: Pint. Not having paid attention at the time the paint was mixed, I felt rather foolish. I am a long time 17th Street resident and use True Value a lot. It's my fav. place for hardware and paint purchasing. The staff are the best and helpful. However, on May 12 when I brought in the paint can and receipt, I was "helped" by Rick. The can of paint was indeed a quart though the labeling was misleading. That's the bottom line. But Rich was incredibly harsh, condescending which was way out of line. For a long time customer to be treated this way was, in my view, unacceptable. read more

Love supporting local businesses, love how convenient this location is and how generally nice the people are that work at the hardware store. I would give it more stars because most everyone is friendly and they have a nice variety, but not everyone is friendly and the products I have gotten have been good about half the time.. First were copies of keys to my apartment, they didn't work, but I've had that happen at other hardware stores before when I got spares for my car. Then, my uncle was sold a broken drill from here. Luckily they did stay open and tried to fix his drill, but for whatever reason they wouldn't let him return it or get a new one, he was really frustrated and upset when he came back so I didnt ask if it was because they were all out, if he was just going to try and use the broken drill and work through it, or if it was because he had opened it up already. They got it working, it got the job done, but it didn't work properly and was the BIGGEST pain EVER to hang my curtains with. The other thing my roommate and I have had go wrong here, paint!!!! OH MY! Okay, so 3 out of 4 paints DID NOT match AT ALL!!! We brought in a square sample of our rug to match the color with and got a pinky color rather than red, it looked HORRID in our kitchen, and our off-white (that we had the exact name for) was not the right color on our walls. Lastly the green didn't match either, but we liked the color okayy so we didnt go back. We went back one more time to try for a new red (had to change from that pink salmon color) and this time used a paint sample... it still didn't get matched perfectly but we're done with it now. Downside with paint, even when they mix it wrong, you can't return it so I spent a lot of money on paint for our house :( There is another paint store, Duron, at 14th and P, I think they just specialize in paint, and it is a bit more expensive (but cheaper than some paint stores, I called around, its middle of the road) and the guy taht works there is superrr nice. He stayed open late for me twice, and really helped me pick out everything I needed for paint, the brushes, trim, etc and even told me I didnt need such expensive brushes when I was checking out and showed me what to get instead, he was awesome! The only problem, they close early :( All and all this hardware store is great for a quick fix, or if you need something right away. The location is amazing, and they have two other stores attached, one with like notecards, pots and pans, aprons, random but great appliances and stuff in general, and another one for alterations and repairs. The only time I went there, they couldn't fix my shoes so bummer, they said no one would be able to fix them, but I find that hard to believe and might just try myself. We'll see... but the convenience store people were nice, they gave me a discount on my mom's apron because it was the last one left and had brown stains on it.. probably just dirt, but no one wants to give a stained apron for a gift but I couldn't get them out :(. Oh well, it'll only get messier when she cooks. read more

While the store is small, it's filled with pretty much anything you might need and is so conveniently located. The people working there were very helpful in getting me exactly what I needed and so nice. Last night I was at the gym (you can check out my review), and I accidentally lock my keys in the locker. Unfortunately, I had to have to lock cut. So this morning I had to buy a replacement lock and I went to this hardware store. As I dodged the Democratic Nation Committee's fundraiser outside, I walked through the door and immediately, I noticed how crowded this store was. There were lots of customers inside, and a lot of employees assisting customers. So, when one gentleman asked if he could help me, I told him that I was alright. Needless to say; I couldn't find the damn locks. So, another associate ask me if I needed help. I decided that I had better take him up on his offer because I only put so much money in the parking meter and the checkout line was getting longer and longer. Instead of pointing me in the right direction, he walked me to where the locks were. They had a nice selection, so naturally, I chose the cheapest lock that would do the job. Then, I walked to the checkout line and when I was in front of the cashier, he did something that I have never seen done before. Without me asking, the cashier used a pair of scissors and cut the plastic wrapping off the lock and put the two loose keys on a keyring for me. That might not do it for you, but by god, that did it for me. So, here I am writing a review and believe me, when I need to go to a hardware store, this will be my first stop. read more

This is a gem of an old school local hardware store. The employees are VERY friendly and helpful right when you want in the door. They are knowledgeable and the store really has a lot of different items on multiple floors. While they are of course more expensive than a Home Depot, it's convenient and has service that can't be beat. I hope this business is around a long time. read more

The staff are incredibly helpful. Even if you are just purchasing a small screwdriver or something. There is someone waiting at the door to help you out. They are so nice. I try to come here as often as I can to support this place. Today I was looking for pots and soil for some new plants I got. The guy started googling my plants to find out exactly what type of soil they needed. Then he gave me advice on pots, and plant food as well. So amazing! read more

What a fabulous place. I walked in (totally clueless) with a laundry list of stuff that needed to be done to my husband's bachelor pad in order to make it liveable. The friendly girl at the counter went through the list with us and pointed out all the tools we would need - including a few she said we really didn't need. I've come in here for little things over the years but usually without needing too much assistance. But this week I had a doozy of a problem being that I promptly needed to change all 6 locks in my house (the eternal DC problem of a front and back door with corresponding security doors as well)! I stopped in here to just ask a few simple questions about my options and John, who is their locksmith, told me that if I felt comfortable taking the locks off myself and bringing them in, it could be done in about 20-30 minutes and costs about $10 a lock and that included a copy of the key with each lock. Better yet, all re-keyed to the same key so I didn't have to have multiple sets of keys. He gave me some great instructions for what to look for when taking them off so I didn't have any issues at all. The whole thing done in about 3 hours and most of that because i had to make two trips since I didn't want to leave the house completely without locks and had to do it in stages. I also had the opportunity to just sit and watch all the employees address the various questions that came in and was just blown away by how attentive and knowledgable they all were. After successfully switching out all my locks I felt comfortable calling them a few days later to see if they could help me with a new ballast for a flickering kitchen light. They had exactly what I needed for the same price as a big box hardware store. I'm coming back here exclusively from here on out! read more

I am not handy and don't really like going to the hardware store, but I love this place. They are friendly, helpful and the space itself is really neat--just don't try to find anything yourself. I came in wanting to replicate a lamp made out of books that I had seen on Etsy and Scout Mob. I had absolutely no idea what to do, except get the used books. I got all of the hardware I needed on one weekend, found the books throughout the week, and then started assembling the following week. When I got stuck, I simply packed everything up and brought it to the store, where the incredibly helpful staff got everything else I needed and helped me assemble the lamp right there in the store.
