JUST LIKE HOME, ONLY BETTER!…read more My grandmother moved here after a sudden and dramatic decline due to a major surgery. She couldn't take care of herself any longer and needed immediate care. I am so grateful that I found Emeritus during an online search of local senior living facilities. I walked in off the street to tour Emeritus, which is marvelously located in East Vancouver minutes from Hwy. 14 and close to gobs of shops, restaurants, doctors, dentists, pharmacies, grocery stores, and anything else you could need--not to mention about ten minutes from PeaceHealth Southwest. Anyhow, the staff welcomed me and gave me a tour on the spot. The building is beautiful, bright and cheery with a spacious feeling and lots of art on the walls. Better yet, it smells great when you walk in--like it's just been cleaned, combined with the aroma of something delicious coming from the dining room/kitchen. Several residents were gathered in the lobby, chatting to each other. I asked them if they were happy living there and to a person they all answered yes. (Maybe they thought I was a state inspector, but still...) My family and I joined my grandmother in the dining room on her first night, with complimentary meal tickets, and we were amazed at the quality of food. I was expecting something institutional and bland but what we got was worth savoring and tasted home-cooked from the first morsel to the last crumb. Our extended family also attended the Thanksgiving meal, which was EXCEPTIONAL and so crowded they had to seat people in the lobby and activity rooms (two words: BOURBON TURKEY). I used to worry about my grandmother when she lived alone, but now I know she's safe. Her one-bedroom apartment is large (about 600 square feet), always perfectly clean, and overlooks an inner courtyard with trees and benches and winding paths. She's made friends, has been invited to attend activities and outings (Plays! Restaurants! Day trips!), goes to the on-site beauty salon, and the staff encourages her to use the 24-hour beeper necklace she wears not just in case of emergency, but also for little things, such as help adjusting the thermostat in her room or if she's in the hallway and can't remember where she's going. She is treated with respect, dignity, and courtesy. Rarely have I encountered a staff so enthusiastic about their jobs. Everyone seemed delighted to help me, and I'm pretty sales-resistant but these people won me over by treating me and my grandmother with genuine kindness. They did everything they could to make my grandmother's transition easier and more comfortable--and they went far, far above and beyond to help me with the overwhelming number of tasks necessary to facilitate the move, including recommended a moving company that specializes in moving older people and helping me get the proper doctor's forms in order. The financial arrangement was explained very clearly and transparently and the prices--compared to other senior living facilities--are on the low end, even though they could reasonably charge far more. Finding a place for your parents or grandparents is HARD, but Emeritus is just like home, only better...not just because the building is beautiful, but because of the staff's unsurpassed dedication to caring for the people who live there.

When I first came the facility was…read moreoutstanding in all regards, and particularly the staff and the senior management demonstrated very strong commitment to their residents. I was one of the early residents of their villas, and they were initially a great improvement to the facility. I felt the facility fully deserved a five-star rating. However while the staff is still outstanding, the quality of services has degraded. It seems that they added over fifty villas to the facility but failed to increase the kitchen size, the transportation support, and likely some of the staffing needs to maintain the high standards of three years ago.

I will limit my observation to the willingness of middle and senior level staff to treat my parents with respect, listening carefully to what they say and working diligently to craft solutions that work. We recently presented them with some unusual problems. They came together, worked outside the box and creatively, energetically, proactively turned a family crisis into a little oasis of safety and calm. I'll let others talk about the normal day to day routines that make a place like this a home for our honored parents and loved ones. And it's all good, believe me. But, when we needed help ... they were there. Impressive. That's a sign of deep corporate cultural health.

She's been very happy there and loves all the staff who seem so kind and loving. Our favorite is Mercedes and her daughter Lana. I also want to note that their meals are not expensive. Some people prefer quantity over quality. Your safest bets are the salads, avocado toast, soups, and fruit bowls. Part of my frustration with Cherrywood is that its a retirement home and the residents don't have a choice where to eat most days. At least this is true for those who can't easily travel. So the meals should be appetizing and inviting. There is a culinary director but somehow he claims to not be involved in culinary matters. I want that job. However, one would think the culinary director would offer to forward your concerns. This doesn't happen. The culinary director is NOT the chef. The chef and his staff try really hard. You usually won't find the culinary director. I don't see him helping when there is a rush, he has never greeted me or seated us where there is a line, and I assume he is usually in his office. One does see him on the family events. So he isn't totally invisible. Sounds like Cherrywood needs a culinary director who is responsible for improving the dining experience in their restaurant willing to greet guests. As stated before, Cherrywood caters to 7th Day Adventists and they are vegetarian. Their vegetarian selections are hopefully getting better. They were not really good before. The worst meal I had there was at the last Thanksgiving. That veggie meal included two slices of fake turkey. Think bologna or spam for Thanksgiving. As a comparison one of their competitors offers a nice salmon dinner every day as an option. Cherrywood offers this maybe once a week. Just saying other retirement homes offer better food services. I hope things get better.

These people are great. We moved my wife's brother here from another nearby "assisted living"…read morefacility that wasn't really taking very good care of him, probably because they have a lot of turnover. Highgate is a smaller facility that is much more intimate. They have a bulletin board with about a dozen pictures of staff that have been there for at least 10 years. When we ate a meal in their dining room I noticed (1) their tables are widely spaced for walkers and (2) some of the administrative staff actually serve the tables. They are all very intimate with the residents. The food is great by the way. We were fortunate to tour just as they had an opening in assisted living. However, after 10 days they called us in for a conference. There had been an incident and they recognized that he was in an early stage of dementia. We were afraid they might say he "wasn't a good fit" for the place. We said that in the meeting and all three staffers immediately reacted for us to be assured, that this is what they are equipped to handle. They have people who are trained in dealing with dementia and have a program for helping keep the minds active which can otherwise lead to pent up frustration. We realize we were too close to see the subtle changes but when they explained how all the little signs added up, it really explained a lot. When something like this hits a family member you are in denial, you don't see it happening. We didn't. They started him in the program and shortly had an opening in memory care where they get the same great food. These people really care and evaluated his behavior. Another place just told us that he was "misbehaving". Highgate is much much better. We're very glad to have found them.

I'm a harsh critic and not easily impressed, but Parkrose Chateau Gracious Retirement Living…read morepleasantly exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a fantastic home to live and thrive. Mom's only regret was that she didn't move sooner. When Mom was ready for a move to independent living, we thoroughly researched and booked tours at several facilities. First up was Parkrose Chataeu as we liked it on paper and felt it was a good value. Criteria was: affordability, cleanliness, room options, ambiance, efficient & caring staff, friendliness of other residents, good food, diverse activities & social events, transportation to & from appointments/shopping, and a secure building. A long and exacting list to be sure, but mom is special and deserves the best. We all wanted her to feel comfortable and happy in her new digs. During our tour including a meal, we asked lots of questions and looked around with a critical eye. The welcoming outside grounds, common areas and available apartments were all immaculate with lovely views. A great start. It quickly became obvious that the friendly staff of office personnel, Chefs/servers, housekeeping, transportation, and maintenance, enjoy working at the Chateau. Their upbeat and caring attitude was contagious. The dedicated team works well together to provide a smooth running, enjoyable, and friendly environment. At the end of the day, we were greatly impressed. Parkrose Chateau had exceeded all of our wants and more. Our questions were favorably answered and our list met. We knew mom need not look any further. She had found her home.
