I tend to focus so much on the future I neglect the present, so I loved this approach, it's very grounding. We really felt cared for at every appointment and she took the time to get to know us and our story, and gave us lots of opportunities to ask questions. She really helped put my concerns to rest. I love her approach to the mental/emotional aspect of giving birth, and how your attitude towards birth is what really determines your experience. (Now that I'm on the other side, I can confidently say that's 100% true.) She emphasized that the contractions can't be stronger than you because they are you. I was nervous about the whole home birth process but talking to her put me at ease. The whole process of preparing and gathering all the stuff and getting the house ready was very empowering, and I can honestly say I actually enjoyed my labor (!!) despite the intensity of it. Her assistants were great as well. I feel really confident in my decision and I'd be happy to do it again.

My wife was at 40 weeks, and ready to go into labor at any moment. We were forced to head east in search of a midwife that was available to take us in on short notice. Needless to say, this was stressful for me & heartbreaking for my wife. I searched & called around from Los Angeles up to Sacramento. Most midwifery's were unwilling or unable to help us. Rebekah was willing to take us in. And for that alone, my family will always be grateful. Anyone reading this should take a moment to let it sink in what a kind act it was for Capital Midwifery to come to our rescue. I'd say it says everything about who they are but it doesn't. The other reviews listed here on Yelp aren't hyperbole when describing Rebekah & Danielle. There is more... Capital Midwifery are incredibly good at their job & their facility is excellent. And I can say that with credibility being that (due to the fires & other circumstances) we were now on our 3rd birthing-center of our pregnancy. My wife had gone into this extremely sad that she couldnt use the midwives she'd formed a bond with during most of our prenatal care. But then we met with Capital Midwifery, and we gave each other a crash course to get caught up & familiar with each other. Both my wife & I left the initial visit both feeling like we'd found the perfect midwifes for us. Personally, for me, I wanted a natural birth but I also wanted direct answers & advice on the various options of labor. Throughout the pregnancy I had struggled to get the sort of direct guidance I was seeking (that you would normally find from a doctor/hospital) but from a holistic background. In Rebekah & Danielle, that was no longer an issue. Whether it was their style, or the nature of emergency get-to-know-each-other, or that they picked up on my vibe and they adapted to make me feel comfortable with their direct approach & knowledge. Whatever it was, their style matched what I was seeking all along. That's not to say anything negative about our previous midwives. It's just that there was something I knew that was different from the very first phone call and at every step of the process my intuition was confirmed. Just days after getting acquainted & finding a short term apartment to rent my wife would go into labor. Rebekah & Danielle handled the entire process with grace & professionalism. 19 hours later our baby girl was born. Rebekah & Danielle were total pro's throughout. While the journey to meeting our daughter came with wild twists & turns at every stage, Im ultimately glad it did because we ended up sharing the final stage of the process with the best people for the job. Thank-you Rebekah & Danielle for EVERYTHING. I wish you nothing but success & happiness for the rest of your lives. As far as I am concerned you are the absolute best at what you do and anyone still reading this would be crazy to choose anyone but you if given the option (or forced into making the decision due to fires, floods, locusts, or a zombie apocalypse).

If I had to choose between the Bradley classes and the doula, I would go with the doula hands down. Not because the classes weren't useful, but because during the birth most of what I had learned in class vanished into thin air! I was not half as capable and informed as I wanted to be. As our doula, Maddy brought the calm and the experience. Doctors and nurses walked in and out, changed shifts and answered questions in what I sometimes thought must have been German. Maddy was someone I knew and trusted, having had several prenatal meetings leading up to our due date. She spoke my language and kept me on an even keel, making me a better coach and support for my wife than I would have been without her. After the birth, she brought us home-cooked food and talked with us about nursing and feeding. For a young couple without the benefit of family in the area, it was great to have our doula's advice, her familiarity with local resources, her encouragement and her participation in our birth experience. We also met Claire who would have served as our back-up doula. We had a lot of confidence in them both and I fully and unreservedly recommend WHDS to expectant fathers. I can't speak directly about my wife's experience but I know she was just as happy with WHDS, and having a consistent ally and guide through the parade of UC Davis students and resident physicians was priceless. With Maddy's help, my wife managed the successful vaginal delivery of a sunny-side-up, face-first baby boy, while the doctors prepped for caesarian. The head of obstetrics later told us that she had never seen a successful vaginal delivery with that presentation. Without the presence of our doula, I'm convinced that she still wouldn't have seen one.

It ended up being one of the best decisions involving my pregnancy/delivery because she was so supportive and valuable every step of the way. Gina helped me prepare for giving birth by meeting with me and discussing my fears about labor, how to best support me, strategies for a smooth labor, etc. She was on-call for me and met my family and I at the hospital immediately when we called her (at midnight) when I went into labor. Gina was so professional with the hospital staff and my family. She provided strategies and aid to keep me comfortable throughout labor and helped me understand what was happening and what to expect next. Yes there were nurses to help, but they had other patients requiring their care and Gina was a constant, knowledgeable, and calm presence. Gina was also extremely helpful during the delivery and did not leave my side afterward until she knew that I was stable and moving to the postpartum room to rest. She's been so supportive during these postpartum weeks and I'm so grateful to her! While Gina's support was a service that I paid for, she has genuinely felt like family throughout this experience. She went so above and beyond for me and my baby and made our experience a special one.

We found Gina and were very impressed by the wealth of information she had in her website. When we spoke with her about what we were looking for in a doula, we appreciated her supportive perspective in informed decision making. She helped us understand the pros and cons of each decision for our birth plan and allowed us to decide independently without pushing her opinions or "shoulding" (i.e. you should do this not this) in terms of what our birth should say or be. During labor, Gina was very helpful with labor support strategies, she helped me get through the worst of the contractions with encouragement, a TENS machine, creating a calm environment, and physical touch such as sacral squeezes. She was incredibly prepared and had everything she needed to support me through a days long labor (which thankfully was not needed in my case). She also helped support my decision for an epidural when I couldn't cope anymore with contractions and made sure I was changing positions frequently to keep labor progressing. I really feel Gina helped make my labor a positive experience and appreciated her support when changing my mind and making deviations from my initial birth plan, such as my decision to move forward with an induction when I passed my due date due and getting an epidural during labor when both of those were not on my initial birth plan. The ultrasound said our baby's head was big (78 percentile) so we asked around for a doula to help, and everyone recommended Alicia! Alicia is very professional and has a lot of experience with births. Alicia understood that every mother is different and are looking for different things out of the birth (for us we were looking for no drugs), so Alicia came to our house and sat with us for 4 hours, to go over a list of topics she prepared so that she understood what we are looking for and how she can best help us. Alicia even took our rapid at-home covid test, just to increase the odds of the birth going smoothly. Alicia answered all of our questions and put us at ease before the birth, which goes to show how capable she is as a doula. Alicia is always organized and on top of things. When my wife's water broke 4am in the morning, we texted Alicia instead of calling to avoid waking Alicia up in the middle of the night. To our surprise, Alicia immediately texted back. You can definitely depend on Alicia to be there for you when problems show up during your pregnancy. This is especially important to us, because we were 1st time parents with 0 clue. Even though we took the online birth classes at Sutter, we only had knowledge on paper--Alicia had actual experience and can give valuable insights that you need to navigate a delivery. Originally the hospital said no doulas are allowed entry due to Covid. But Alicia called the hospital and managed to confirm that she can indeed be present at the hospital during our delivery. Talk about professionalism! On the day of the delivery, we called Alicia 6am in the morning, and she came by, and stayed 12 hours until the paper was delivered 6pm afternoon. Each time the nurses and doctors recommended drugs, Alicia helped us ask for alternatives and options. That was helpful because as 1st time parents and lacking experience, it s hard to ask questions when nurses or doctors recommend anything--Alicia helped us reduce the amount of drugs to absolute minimal levels. During the delivery, Alicia helped lift my wife's left leg, while I lifted my wife's right leg. The nurses were busy elsewhere with bringing equipment to the doctor and getting medical supplies, so the room was short-staffed. Having Alicia be an experienced helping hand was like having an extra nurse in the room. During the chaos of the actual delivery, having an extra nurse who is experienced and knows what she is doing, is a god-send. I cannot overstate how important and how much of a game-changer it is to have an additional professional in the room--when labor happens, it's a mess and everyone's scrambling, and additional professional helping hands makes a world of difference. Alicia was instrumental to our baby being delivered safely and smoothly. Thank you Alicia for all the help. Would definitely sign up again if/when we have another pregnancy in the future!
