Wow. After having traveled through 7 different airports over the past month, I was shocked at this particular airport terminal's TSA staff. First of all, TSA pre-check means nothing here except a piece of paper that lets you keep your shoes on. Belts, jackets, laptops and all electronics out, and expect to wait in the same long line. I have never seen such rude TSA employees in any airport. I'll fly out of JFK next time even if it takes way longer to get there it only to avoid these horrible human beings. (Also no CLEAR at this terminal and they also treat airline crews horribly as well per my conversations with flight attendants). I have bad arthritis and purchased TSA Precheck to avoid the painful process of removing shoes, belt, electronic devices etc. Standing in long lines is also painful. Unfortunately, I repeatedly fly back to Seattle from Newark's Terminal A. According to the internet, Terminal A has Precheck. It doesn't. I asked the TSA security personnel for assistance, and they told me to request a wheelchair. I don't want a wheelchair, and I don't need a wheelchair for obvious emotional reasons. How about some respect for older people TSA? The TSA personnel mark my flight ticket to supposedly expedite my journey through security. That means I don't have to remove my shoes or belt. Yet, I must stand in line for 30 to 60 minutes and retrieve my devices. I am in excruciating pain by the time I get through security and look like I have aged 30 years. I know in this youth worshiping world no one cares, but TSA should have some allowance for people over 70, who may find the security process an ordeal. read more

Like the majority of the reviews here - security is slow disorganized and unrespectful. This not the TSA I know. Cherry on top, TSA expedited cards were given based on personal preference. Family of 4 here, all TSA pre, probably racially profiled. We asked why and got no response. Just a stare that soubded like "why are you taking my time to ask for your rights, you have none". Same as all the previous reviews. If you are TSA pre you need an additional "card" which some of the ID checkers fail to distribute to passengers, all of whom are TSA - pre at their station. Without the "card" there is no difference in your treatment at security even with a TSA-pre marked boarding pass. This is for the A Terminal 30 series gates So it you're pre be sure to ask the id checker for your slip.. read more

Worst attitude from female employee this morning. Maybe she needed a coffee or more sleep because it was 5am but she was very chatty with her TSA friend. There was four of us going through security in my group and literally not a single line. She screamed directions for us to turn our bins east and west... neat... I am not from the area and zero idea what direction that is. She continues to scream it in between being nice with her friend. Then she barks more orders (yelling) that I am taking up space for the person behind me. Calm down lady, it was my own kid and not a person behind us waiting. I was snarky back after her yelling several times at us for nonsense and said something about no need to yell at us. I then saw her walk down and talk to a couple other agents. My daughter and I both apparently earned a complete pat down because of her bad day. She told my daughter it was because we had on sweatshirts yet the other two in our group had them on too and no pat down. Drink another coffee before you interact with people or find some new staff. Hope your friends enjoyed feeling me up because of your bad day. read more

Probably been very fortunate because we have always experienced smooth and efficient service. It is one of the reasons we prefer flying in and out of Newark rather than JFK or LaGuardia whenever we travel to NYC. read more

No pre-check at this terminal. They hand you a dumb little piece of blue paper that allows you to keep your shoes on but essentially you still have to take out your laptop and liquids. How can any TSA checkpoint ever get good reviews, let alone at Newark Airport. I came through here with TSA pre-check yet there was no PreCheck Lane. I did get to keep my shoes on but had to take my laptop out and my jacket off. A tin of coffee beans in my carry-on bag sent me to secondary screening, where one guy had a backlog of four bags to check. No one seemed to give a shit and I almost missed my flight because of it. Literally the worst security I've been through as a TSA Pre-check customer. First, the only benefit of pre-check you get here is a different line to get your ID check. However, they say the pre-check line is closed so they give you an "expedited" ticket and you need to remove electronics and food from your bag. I was pretty upset when TSA freaked out and my bag got flagged for having food inside. I hadn't heard anything about removing food and sealed twizzlers in my bag. Honestly I forgot that they were there after my friend gave them to me at the last minute. (He thought it would help me with my ears popping as I'm not able to tolerate chewing gum.) However, the inner city attitude of the young lady TSA agent very quickly escalated, her fellow agent, a tall young man only incited and escalated further. they both suggested that I should be thrown out of the airport because I dared to record the search of my bag on my cell phone, despite 10+ cameras focused on the checkpoint. Unfortunately for me and the TSA, the last time that I was here my nikon camera was stolen out of my checked baggage, and all I received was a ticket saying that my bag had been searched. Can't give it a zero so will settle for a 1 star. I fly out of here pretty often but this was by far the worst experience of my life. No more precheck ? And to make matters worse the line was ridiculous. I've never missed a flight before in my life from Newark but missed my first today and staff was extremely rude. I got selected for a "random" screening and it took a female staff member at least 5 minutes to get to me after I walked through the scanner. Those 5 minutes would have probably made a difference. read more

6 months later and same issue. No TSA precheck line is open. All the passengers wait on the same line which is backed up during the prime travel times (AM rush). Takes 30-45 min to clear security. Avoid this terminal or factor in additional time to ensure you don't miss your flight. read more

Horrible TSA checkpoint. Avoid Terminal A @ EWR at all costs - seriously fly another airline! The agents have absolutely no customer service skills and lack basic human decency. As others have noted, there is no precheck and only a single baggage scanner - this leads to extensive backups. When they check your boarding pass, you are unable to see the length of the security line. Approximately 20 agents but only 5 of them were doing anything nearing the definition of "work" and they moved at a snails pace - bet were told they "lack resources". Worst TSA checkpoint I've seen since 2001. If you are flying out of Terminal A give yourself 3 hours. read more

Worst airport ever for lines. MVP gold on alaska airlines and premium line is so bad that many non premiums are passing us in other line. Do yourself a favor and take the non premium line. Very poor layout and very poor process. It's 5:00 am and I've been in line for 30 minutes. On a good note the tsa agent helped me find the right terminal to rate on yelp... Very poorly run. Terminal A is one of those horrible airport terminals that had the misfortune of being designed prior to 9/11. The access area is not wide or large enough to accommodate multiple screening lines so the TSA has extended the lines down the concourse towards the gate areas. Since checkpoint 3 only services about 8 gates and there is no post-security shuttle, staffing is also minimal. Finally, no space means no TSA pre-check lines to speed travelers on their way. Be sure to leave extra time if you are flying on US Airways or American. The security experience, combined with the ugliness of the terminal, scarcity of services, expensive parking, and mind numbing traffic all combine to make EWR my last choice in airports. Terminal A got an extra star because at least the staff were friendly (by a TSA standards). The EWR website says that Terminal A is in the process of being redesigned, but I would not hold my breath. read more

I am giving a 1 * because I cannot give it a 0. I have never written any reviews before. Ewr terminal A security checkpoint - thabks to you for making me frustrated and making me write a review. I have never seen such a badly designed security clearance lines. Definitely terminal A is a bad one. The lines are pretty huge. It has got a single line. There are other counters too but they are always locked. It is geting difficult to travel from EWR day by day and yeah the staff is very arrogant. I wish things get better and Hope there comes a day when flying from EWR is not painful read more
