I made an appointment with Kayla on a Sunday morning and found parking pretty quickly. I told her it was my first time here and I was looking for a simple trim with soft layers to even out my lob haircut from 4-5 months ago. I showed her a photo of the length I expected and she quickly understood what I wanted without hesitation. I felt comfortable with my first step into the salon - very clean and modern with rustic accents. Maven's saved the day! I have African American/Japanese hair and never trust people with my hair. I usually just go for the dry straight cut, leaving most salons not feeling **transformed** Mayra did a dry cut, but in comparison, she went above and beyond to make my hair look and feel nice - like I actually got something done. I just signed up for Yelp to write this review for Tsomuka Salon. Tsomuka went above and beyond for me today. I work in a field somewhat like this (clothing alterations) and so I know very well that I was the worst imaginable customer; exactly the sort you don't want. I didn't know what I wanted when I came in; I got exactly what I asked for and didn't like it; and I couldn't articulate what was wrong, much less how to fix it. Tsomuka was so patient, so helpful, and so dedicated to making sure I left happy with my haircut. She never got annoyed with me, even though she had done exactly what I asked her to do. I could honestly learn a thing or two from her in that regard. She stuck with me for an hour and a half, positive and pleasant the whole time, until I was happy - with a haircut that was nothing like what I came in asking for. She even double-checked to make sure instead of rushing me out the door, like many people would have after I had given them so much trouble. With Maven Salon's positive reviews I was lead to this Salon. I called ahead of time to inquire of their services and to explain that I had just done a New Years color and cut at the Claremont Spa Hotel. They recommended a hairdresser with raving reviews! Unfortunately, the color and cut I received was a disaster!! I felt too humiliated to even complain. I have been trying to find a forever hair stylist since my last (9 years) moved too far and costed me out. I had been to four stylists since, the last being a disaster. My hair is my signature so of course now I'm anxious and highly critical. This salon received such great reviews so I called and was given an appt with Eric. He did a fantastic job. He fixed the mistakes and, though this is a little cheesy, I felt like he intuited what my hair and my mind needed. I have long hair and only recently transitioned to bangs. The bangs were on point. He put in lots of layers at the bottom to lighten it up and enable me to get a nice curly look and it looks great straight as well. He was pleasant and we laughed, which is nice too. I was so lucky to be able to see Tsomuka before the shelter in place order went into effect. After being postpartum for 7 months I really needed a trim and some texture to my hair. I let Tsomuka do what she thought would be good. At first I thought my cut was too short and it was definitely not a cut I would have directed my self, but a day or two later, I absolutely loved it. Really wanted to like this place but honestly had the most awful experience I've ever had at a salon. I came in with super brassy blonde hair and all I asked for was to take the brass out. She seemed pretty confused while I was consulting with her about the color I wanted... I soon realized this wasn't the place if you want a blonde specialist. But I thought she could at least do better than what I came in there with since I had a vacation the next day there really wasn't time to book a appointment else where. So, she came back with a swatch book full of 'fashion' colors which wasn't what I was looking for. She showed me a pale pink color that I agreed to because honestly that was better than the orange hair that I had. In order to achieve that color though you would have to lighten your color to AT LEAST a level 9, which was not what I got. I came in with orange hair and left with orange hair. It was awful. My hair was so damaged and not what I wanted at all. To make matters worse she was not careful when washing the bleach out of my hair and ended up with bleach stains all the way down my favorite shirt. Also the cherry on top, at the end of my appointment she basically pushed me out of the chair because she had another appointment and I ended up walking out of the salon with frizzy , damaged, wet hair. So, I am sure that the owner is going to try and rebuke this, which I find to be amusing (she just apparently took over the salon one day ago, or so she claims). Trevor- who I've known since I was a soldier in the military back in North Carolina - where he is from works there. I had a unit that I needed to be dyed and so knowing that he has worked at various salons I figured I would contact him to see if he wanted to dye my unit. Naturally, I text him (the kid has bounced between so many salons and arbitrary jobs that I can't keep up with him. Last I checked he was at a Salon on Grant, clearly, he had some drama, then ended up at another salon on Hyde, fast forward he is at a salon in Oakland). I reached out to him to see if he could do the job, and he said that he could. He told me he was at Maven, him having done my hair in the past, and me having personally texted him in the past ... I assumed he went with the proper protocol of whatever it was he needed to do in order to dye the wig ombre/balayage, Assuming that he is using the salon's product on salon time, my assumption is he did what he was supposed to -- I guess not. Trevor is a sweet guy, but with a long history of drug use is quite unreliable. I've realized this in the past but gave him the benefit of the doubt. Long story short he did not dye the hair when he was supposed to and came up with excuses after excuses. It went from Wednesday to Friday, to Saturday. I asked for him to return the unit to me so that I could find someone else to dye it, and he continued to ignore me. So I was left with no choice but to call the salon. I called the salon and talked to the new owner, and she tried to get the gist of the story claiming that this was a personal thing and that the salon wasn't liable. She was extremely unprofessional and clearly doesn't know how to manage a salon. It also seem from the reviews this salon has a ongoing issue with ombre/balayage... coincidence? I have no idea. She told me that she would personally do it, and then called me back and claimed that the salon is not liable for personal texts on personal phones (so how am I supposed to know he has a work phone? I know the guy personally, but don't know his work phone number). From my understanding, I was getting a service done at the salon through a guy that I know. She said that the salon is not liable for anything and that she doesn't feel my waste of time and frustrated should be compensated. If you have an employee that accepts a service in the salon, on salon time, using your products it is your concern! You should be doing whatever it takes to fix it. Unprofessional, and most of all dirty (I walked in there like, ewww this is it?) ... I was willing to pay to have it done it's not like I am asking for a free service, but clearly, customer service is not a number one priority here. On top of that, she was arguing with me before I could even explain the story. Some advice about running a shop: You should probably listen to your customer, and regardless how it happened, it is your shop, it happened at your shop, with your employee, you should be making it right. Instead of arguing with me and disrespecting me even more. I'm sticking to San Francisco where people know how to treat people and accept responsibility for their lack of professionalism. Several months ago my favorite stylist moved out of state, and when I asked her if she could refer me to anyone, she gave me a few names. After checking some photos of her recommendations, I chose Eric Gutierrez. I made appointment with Eric for a color correction, new color application, and haircut and I am absolutely delighted with the outcome. My hair was in terrible shape and I was expecting to have an improvement, but not to be in absolute LOVE with my hair! Eric is kind, courteous, professional, and EXPERIENCED. He did things with color that I've never seen anyone else do, and I've been getting my hair done by stylists for over 30 years. Not only is the color absolutely stunning, the condition of it has improved and it is now, soft, silky, and shiny like I haven't seen in years. I have been a faithful patron of Kayla's for the past three years, so I was really excited to find out that she had started her own salon - a testament to her success and prowess as a stylist. I am a big fan of changing my hair, and Kayla has seen me through it all - long, short, red, blonde, highlights, ombre... you name it. She is always willing to consult with me, and not afraid to tell me if my next big idea is great, or only great in my head (a GOOD thing!). After a few failed attempts at getting a hold of Darcy again (I found out later that she no longer works there), I was introduced to Kayla. It had been several months since my last professional haircut, so by then, my dye had faded and my perm had fallen out (sadness!). Recently, I developed an urge to chop off most of my hair, which had grown down to my waist. The last bob I had had been so disastrous, however, that I vowed never to have short hair again as long as I lived. And so five years passed. Everything changed after a recent trip to SoCal, where everyone and their mom was sporting cute, short pixie cuts, and I was once again inspired to find one that worked for me. Kayla was really sweet and helpful. She assuaged my concerns about short hair making me look super young and my face extra round. I showed her a picture of the haircut I was thinking of, and she executed it perfectly, finished it off by coloring it a deep dark red (interestingly, she suggested that I dye it red before I had even told her that was what I had wanted). And now for the aftermath: I have never EVER gotten so many compliments on my hair in my life. Literally (yes, literally) every day for two weeks straight, I had multiple people coming up to me gushing over my hair. I work in a fairly large office, and a majority of my coworkers came by to say how much they liked it, and one even went to get her hair cut right after. One lady's "I like your hair!" was the first sentence she spoke to me in the entire three years since I started working there.
