She takes great care of her clients; We previously had a miscommunication about my salon visit, but when she returned from vacation she was efficient and prompt about resolving it. The salon is also very careful about being compliant with pandemic safety; the stylist wore a mask, they have air filters, and kept the salon door open the entire time. She gave me a great cut, but it wasn't what I had asked for and I was stuck with a near "Karen" style that I could thankfully work into something more me. I started coming here soon after it opened. Kayla is fantastic but this review is for the newest addition Tsomuka. It's been 8 days since the haircut and color that she did for me and I love it as much as the day I got it! It was my first time meeting her and I still wanted to chop my hair off anyway. My hair is coarse and unruly... and it's difficult to cut well. Oh but did Tsomuka work wonders! My hair was down to the top of shoulder blades and now I have an undercut. It was very drastic but she did a fantastic job cutting it part way and showing me what it could be like. Then, we both decided that my hair was too coarse and poofy sooooo shave we did! I've been wanting to shave my head for a while and she did it beautifully. Not only that she did the new color to my hair perfectly as well. I know this seems all too positive and too good to be true but I racked my brain trying to think of something negative but I honestly couldn't... I mean even her head massage was great! Was needing something to perk up my white/grey hair. My natural grey is pretty, people are paying to get their hair to look like my color, but after being an experimental hair girl the years of grey stretching before me seemed boring. I wanted something fun and funky that would not damage my hair and would play off of the grey. Kayla had the best recommendation of a bright burgundy streaked in the lower half and around the face. It will fade to a sheer pink over about 4-6 weeks at which point I can do it again in the same or other fun colors. My grey is still very visible, the new color vibrant, everything healthy, and the style is amazing. My advice: Trust Kayla I posted my pics, before and after. They'll be dated February 2, 2017. Tsomuka is an amazing stylist. She's patient, kind, up-to-date on the latest trends and styles, and most importantly, she listens to what you're looking for and transforms your thoughts into magical hair styles. She's the best stylist I've had by a mile in the Bay, and it took me a while to find someone that fit exactly what I was looking for. I have thick, coarse hair and I don't often take care of it so I was tired of getting shamed by stylists who'd scold me for not using some fancy expensive product. It was also difficult to find a stylist who knew how to thin my hair and shape it to fit my face. Most stylists think they can just give you a shorter haircut or shave part of it and that doesn't work for coarse hair like mine. The salon itself is cozy and cute, and won't make you feel intimidated. The last salon I went to had about 15 chairs and was jam-packed with loud customers. I prefer more of an oasis/getaway than a social club, so Tsomkua's Salon has the vibe I want. Access is easy and it's near a whole bunch of great shops on Grand Ave so you can get a haircut and then show it off right away. I've had so many people compliment my haircut which doesn't happen often so I'll keep going back if just for the ego boost. Actually, I've only been going to Maven for about the same time my hair dressers been working there, so about 2 yrs. This review is for Eric G, who has cut my hair for a very looooong time - and there's good reason to go back. Asian hair is a skill, mine is very thick and has a wave. He knows how to handle it. - he's also innovative, and stays current with the styles of today! Want to have a new look, a make over? He is the go-to! Very creative. - also I've seen his clients hair color work, and he's talented there as well. As soon as I get up the nerve, and as soon as the grey overrides the black, I'm running to him. He's also a very sweet guy, he has a big heart, don't let his "stylist persona" fool you :) Above and beyond, he's really focused on doing a great job! And that's what I like, and want. Had a pretty good experience with my haircut. I was 15 mins early and she took me right away. I'm excited to see how my hair is going to grow out. There was a moment of awkwardness during checkout. The business was offering 20% off first time women customers during the weekday yelp. So I was surprise, my hairstylist just said $60 with no mention of the discount. When I inquired about it, she said I did get the discount because it is normally $70. Ok - no problem. When I got home I realized that the math was wrong...20% off $70 is $56. Hmmm. read more

It was Monday and my husband offered to pay for my highlights. I have had my natural brown curly hair my whole life so I was excited at the thought but needless to say I was nervous. As we all know, if you don't go to the right person who knows what they're doing, you can be scarred for life at the outcome! So I began my research and salon after salon was booked and I began to panic when finally Kayla called me and got me in before my trip within 3 days. She took her time but was fast enough to get me in and out within two hours. I loved her personality and felt really good about supporting a woman who just bought her own shop and was realizing her dream. The salon is clean and cozy in a very nice location. Overall the experience was pleasant and I was very pleased with the outcome. The only thing that I would suggest is that she ask or as a client, be specific about how blonde you want your highlights. I originally thought they would be a darker golden color but after a couple of days and several compliments, I love it! Besides, all I said was that I wanted blonde highlights and that's what I got. I cannot day enough nice things about Tsomuka Salon. The friendly, professional, and relaxing atmosphere makes it feel like a welcome retreat here in Oakland. Several months ago my favorite stylist moved out of state, and when I asked her if she could refer me to anyone, she gave me a few names. After checking some photos of her recommendations, I chose Eric Gutierrez. I made appointment with Eric for a color correction, new color application, and haircut and I am absolutely delighted with the outcome. My hair was in terrible shape and I was expecting to have an improvement, but not to be in absolute LOVE with my hair! Eric is kind, courteous, professional, and EXPERIENCED. He did things with color that I've never seen anyone else do, and I've been getting my hair done by stylists for over 30 years. Not only is the color absolutely stunning, the condition of it has improved and it is now, soft, silky, and shiny like I haven't seen in years. The cut is fun and flattering, and I hadn't even walked twenty feet out the door of the salon after my appointment before getting my first compliment on my hair. I found this place on yelp with outstanding reviews, and my last haircut was a botched cut so I needed help ASAP. I emailed the salon owner, Kayla, and we scheduled an appointment for a Friday afternoon. I arrived for my appointment and checked in only to receive a confused look from the girl behind the counter...apparently I was forgotten about. The girl sitting behind the counter called Kayla and handed me the phone. Kayla apologized for forgetting about me and asked if I could come at a later time....sorry no! I drove in horrible traffic, through the rain, and went through the hassle of finding a parking spot which I had to pay for! If anything, the owner of the salon should say "I forgot about our appointment, but I will be there in 5 minutes!" I was irritated. However, the girl sitting behind the counter was a hairstylist and she took me on the spot. So, MAYRA is the absolute perfect person to do your hair at this salon. This girl KNOWS her stuff. As she was doing my hair, she was talking with me and explaining what she was doing to fix my mess of a haircut. She would ask me what I wanted and what I was looking for.
