Monaka is my new all time matcha fave. I'm from Vancouver and I'd say this is the best one I've tried in Toronto. Better than Taiyaki's and any other matcha ice cream places I've had. The big difference is the strong matcha which some consider as a bitter after taste. I do not like that rice balls at all although I agree with the other reviewer that it's good for texture. I really love the burnt caramel and toasted rice (?) they add in it. I usually have photos but it's so good that I always finish it before I can take one pretty pricy but yeah I keep coming back. I first tried Tsujiri at the Singapore outlet, and was excited to relive it in Toronto, 2 years later. I visited on a Sunday at around 3pm, and the line wasn't very long (~10min wait). The menu is extensive - with almost every kind of matcha food, drink, or dessert you could fathom. Most seem to get the sundae (like myself), because it might be the most "instagrammable" - but hey, I'm a sucker for good soft serve. I got the Tsujiri sundae - which is a blend of rice crisps at the bottom, layered with red bean and matcha soft serve, then topped with a rice ball, chestnut, and pink flower cookie. I loved the almost bitter taste of the matcha, mixed with the red bean. What I love about Tsujiri is, once you've ordered and paid, you can stand and watch the matcha experts prepare your order. I'm not sure if everyone that works there operates the same, but the lady preparing the desserts on the day I visited worked like a professional artist, and it was an enthralling sight. Although it seems like most reviewers believe they could 'get better' matcha elsewhere, I'm not really sure where that would be. I've been to this place twice so far and have been lucky to need not wait in line. The latest I've been, I tried their Tsujiri shaved ice. It was pretty much shaved ice with some green tea syrup topped off with mochi, some yellow nut (might be ginkgo), and their popular soft serve. They did a good job filling the cup with shaved ice and making it look really good. Upon walking out a few mins, the soft serve just slid off the ice. Never mind that, another time for soft serve. The shaved ice was very rough, but melted quick, which turned into a sweet cold drink after awhile on a hot day. Came on a Friday night just made it in time before the place closed at 10:30pm. There seems to always be line up at this place, waited about 25 minutes from ordering to pick up. Unfortunately, because the place had a line it felt like the A/C wasn't on or that the opened front door made it feel non-existent. It was tight spacing as there was a line to order and a line to pick up, which is an improvement from when it first opened and people didn't know where to stand after ordering. There were some seats available but it was so hot inside, it was not even an option to sit down. I had the Chiffon Cake Sundae and it was a bit disappointing. Half of the cup as filled with corn flakes, 1/4 was a slice of matcha cake (soft and fluffy) but barely had any matcha taste to it and then the rest consisted of a small scoop of red bean and soft serve matcha ice cream. Their soft serve melted so quickly, I was barely out the door for a minute and it was almost half melted in my cup. My friend got the Houjicha soft serve and it was delicious! The roasted flavour of the green tea was refreshing and worth trying next time. A bit pricy for the amount you receive, especially when it melts so quickly, I felt rushed to enjoy it. The cream was very bland as was the cake and the ice cream and I only got a hint of matcha and a heck of a lot of blandness. The red beans were the only good thing about it and the base was all korn flakes which was totally unnecessary and ruined the flow of digging your entire spoon in to get all the layers. I heard about this place opening up a while back so I had to come and check it out when it opens! Since they've just opened for a few days only they only accept cash at the moment. Their menu is extensive and full of matcha items! I'm already in love from the billions of items to order from! It took some time for me to decide what I wanted but in the end I wanted the Tsujiri Sundae with Matcha ice cream! A super friendly staff asked everyone in line if they needed assistance with their menu and suggestions! When she approached me I informed her that I knew what I wanted and she was pleasantly surprised! At that same moment I suddenly wanted their O Matcha Macarons as well so I asked her if there were any left since some baked items were sold out! She told me there were a few left and asked me how many I wanted so that she can put them aside for me. Super sweet and considerate!!! I wanted three in total so she quickly packaged them and set them aside while I wait in line. When it was my turn to order the Tsujiri Sundae I was told it's sold out! Oh the two words I didn't want to hear... Luckily the friendly staff member was there so she recommended that I order the Shiratama Sundae with Matcha Ice Cream over the Chiffon Cake Sundae! I took her suggestion and it was AMAZING!! Definitely love the matcha soft serve over Uncle Tetsu's version since this was creamier and flavourful! I got lucky and was able to grab myself a sundae before the line hit this afternoon. A few months back, I was super excited to see that Uncle Testu opened a matcha cafe, but was subsequently disappointed with their products. I was hoping that Tsujiri wouldn't disappoint and well, there's potential. Not a surprise but there is usually a line. The line was massive when I dropped by on Sunday so I just moved on and went somewhere else. I'm not docking any points for having to wait in line though - it really doesn't make any sense to. No one forced you to stand in line, and you yourself chose to wait 1.5 hours for matcha ice cream - what could you possibly be expecting? You're not going to have some intense orgasmic experience from even the best matcha in the world. Let's be real here, you're only standing in line so that you can be one of the first to tell your friends about how Tsujiri is not worth the wait. It's actually kind of funny to read these reviewers complaining about the line when they themselves are contributing to the ridiculous line, you're part of the very problem you're complaining about. Anyway, now that my rant is over I'll detail what my issues were. I ordered the Shiratama sundae but the cashier punched in the Tsujiri sundae - no big deal, I didn't really care either way. The cashier could have been a little apologetic about messing up my order, but I suppose there is the possibility that I might've said the wrong thing? Meh, not a big issue. The green tea soft serve is 10x better here than from the Uncle Testu Matcha Cafe. I was pretty happy with the ice cream, until I got to the bottom. There is too much genmai (brown rice) at the bottom which just overpowers the rest of the flavours. It's also a bit too crunchy for my liking. The red bean was also too sweet that my throat felt a little sore. I would advise against their sundae and just opt for just their soft serve. I can't comment on their drinks, shaved ice, or their pastries because I didn't order them but they looked good so I'll have to try them next time and perhaps update my review. The service is also somewhat slow. Even though there were only a few people waiting for their orders, it took them about 10 minutes to make my sundae. It's just a sundae, nothing needs to be cooked, I'm not sure why they need so much time to make it. I suppose you could make the argument that the slow service contributes to the ridiculous congestion, and so the crazy line is partly their fault (but mostly just because of the hype). I liked the clean design of the cafe but was not a fan of the inefficient use of space. I don't think the counters by the front and the side should be used as displays, they should be used as standing tables to increase the amount of space for people to eat indoors. There are only 3 tables and a tatami room which would fit about 8 people, but if they just converted the display tables to actual standing tables you really could double the capacity. The tatami room is a nice touch, but I would've preferred to change that to regular tables to increase the number of seats. Maybe the shop didn't expect to get this many customers. It's also odd that they didn't have garbage cans... I had to give my garbage to the workers who were preparing the desserts. That part seemed particularly odd to me because they seem like a place that really values cleanliness (the workers who prepare the food even wear clear masks) yet they touch other people's garbage while preparing the food? Odd. The place is cash only for now (I'm sure it won't be in a few weeks) so make sure you have cash on you. It says so right at the door and even the workers make announcements from time to time yet people still attempt to use their card to pay when they get to the register! I don't even feel bad for you by that point. Overall, there is potential with this place and perhaps their sundae was just not to my liking. I thought there was a price for mixed soft served (more expensive) and another price for single flavor soft serve (cheaper). I ordered all only matcha flavor and got charged for the more expensive price. The design of the store doesn't really make sense to me. The drink/ice cream dessert hand off is at the front while the pastry hand off is at the back. There is confusion on where to wait for your order and congestion at the front of the store. The space between the bar counters where the staff were working in was incredibly narrow! Most likely to make space for the backroom. All staff members were wearing sneeze guards which I have never seen before. The ice cream was thick and creamy with a strong matcha flavour. They give you a small serving of ice cream for $5.75 IMO. The o matcha parfait consists of a little bit of cake and layered green tea mousse (more mousse than cake). Not very impressive as it tastes like a grocery store bought item. The cream puffs were nice. The cream was light sweet and with a layer of matcha cream. Not as good as nakamura bakery in jtown though. The float in my opinion is overpriced. Sure, your getting soft served but for $7.00, it is a green tea frap with less ingredients. Using water/ice base, it is light and runny with strong taste of matcha. ***CASH ONLY!!! So don't even line up without having any money on you.*** I went to Dolce 21 last weekend and Tsujiri today and there is a HUGE difference in colour, texture, & of course, TASTE! You can't even compare the 2 as they're not even in the same league. Luckily upon my visit this time, there was only a line inside the small café as opposed to on the sidewalk, so wait wasn't bad. I waited maybe 5mins to give my order and another 5mins to actually get my soft serve (Matcha, of course!) + latté (Matcha again!). I wanted to try at least a couple of items off their menu without all the frills, so I can actually taste their product, so no fancy mixes, shaved ice, or mochi balls for me! Colour of Matcha soft serve was AMAZING, hope it wasn't some kinda food colouring! However, it also tasted like the real deal, so I was happy about that - slightly bitter and not sweet. I don't like really sweet desserts. Matcha Latté was ok too. I'd say it's comparable to Starbucks, but not as syrupy! Both items together was ~$12. Other items like Sundaes, Shaved Ice, & fancier items were more expensive. Suggestion: I'd recommend skipping the latté, unless you really feel like one. Otherwise, it was good, but nothing mind-blowing. The float was very delicious and is reminiscent of a very good green tea ice cream bowl, albeit sweeter. It definitely hits the spot and I would highly recommend this. Hopefully, this will improve over time...because the line-up will only get longer. I ordered a medium matcha Tsujiri Float with red bean. (The medium size is similar to a 'regular' at Chatime.) We came here looking for the Japanese souffle pancakes, which we didn't realize from online that this particular location didn't have (there's a video of it in the Google listing but it's old, so maybe they stopped serving it more recently?) Tsujiri is a tiny store that only seats about 10 people. I've heard a lot about the place and wanted to find out if the hype was worth it. We came around 2pm on a Thursday afternoon and there were about 5 people in line, but we almost had to stand outside because the place was so tiny! Lining up and waiting for the order took quite a long time. They work very hard but the size of the store is really what dragged them down. Too many orders and a small work station = long waits and long lines. I ordered a Tsujiri Sundae (mixed) and my friend ordered shaved ice. The sundae was about $8 with tax and my friend's came out to $9 I believe. I do think that this is a bit pricey for what I received. The sundae was small and came with a small cookie, a chestnut (?), and this other Mochi-like object. It was most likely my own tastes, but I did not like any of them. It was a particular taste that did not appeal to me. The only edible thing to me was the ice cream and at the bottom it was like... I can't even explain it; it's like rice krispies but it had a slight burnt taste to it so when I got to the bottom it wasn't tasty. I enjoyed the texture though. The ice cream itself was good... But it didn't blow my mind or anything. If I come again, I would opt for the simple cone with matcha ice cream and I want to try the matcha cream puff. My friend and I both agreed it was a "meh" experience. If you're wondering if it's worth your money, then I'm going to say yes. I mean, obviously everything on the menu seems overpriced, but unless you're coming here every single day, it's not a bad thing to treat yourself once in a while. What I like about this place is that nothing is too sweet. You can taste the matcha in the ice cream, and it compliments the sweetness without either overtaking each other. I prefer getting it swirled with the vanilla, and I suggest getting it this way as well if you're trying Tsujiri for the first time and aren't sure if you'll like matcha flavoured items. Service really is quite pleasant here. There is very limited seating (I think like two or three high tables and then a traditional one in the back), because the place is so tiny. Imagine standing in a cramped hallway. That's how crowded this place gets and how narrow the store is. Finally step foot into this place today!!! I was quite intimidated by the long line up however, we still joined the line and thankfully, the line moved pretty quick! We were only in line for about 15mins! We ordered the Chiffon Sundae Matcha and Tsujiri Shaved Ice Mixed. The sundae came with a piece of matcha cake, a small portion of red bean paste, a scoop of cornflakes and your choice of matcha or mixed ice cream. Of course, I chose matcha 'cause why would you not at Tsujiri?! That first spoonful of matcha soft serve had me at hello. HELLO! It was the BEST matcha ice cream I've ever had!! The matcha flavour definitely made a lasting impression on me and stood out from the rest of the ones I've had. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong... I believe there was also an option for the degree of matcha flavour (mild, medium and... strong? that was advertised on their menu??) Aside from the matcha ice cream, the cake was just as good. I was not fond of it at first as I found it to be a bit too dry on its own. Eating it with the ice cream definitely made it a lot more enjoyable and the cornflakes added some texture to the overall dessert. As for the the red bean paste...nothing too special but, I did appreciate how it was not overly sweet and that you can still taste the authentic flavour of the red bean. Now, the shaved ice was a different story. It was a lot bigger than the sundae and topped with many layers. First, of course, there was shaved ice and then a white syrup/sauce was poured all over it. Then, it was sprinkled with matcha powder followed by a scoop of red bean paste and then more shaved ice, white syrup and matcha powder. Lastly, it was topped off with three mochi balls and the mixed soft serve. (Make sure your soft serve is half placed IN your shaved ice 'cause for ours, they placed it right on top of the shaved ice and as we were walking and eating it... it escaped and dived onto the sidewalk...rip). IMO, this shaved ice tasted a lot better when it turned into a slushy. Simply just scooping at it doesn't give your taste buds the full experience of flavours; it'll just taste like ice with a hint of sweetness. The mochi balls could be sweeten. It was pretty much a ball of starch.. Quite pricey if you were to measure these goodies by its portion. The sundae was $7.50 and the shaved ice was $8.00. Despite the rave reviews, I wasn't all that enthused after my first experience at Tsujiri - maybe I'm just not enough of a matcha fan? Although there appeared to be no lineup outside of the store, looks can be deceiving, and in the end I still had to wait about half an hour for my sundae. The store is really small and set up in such a way that you have to line up in this narrow space in front of the counter... after a while it definitely gets a bit uncomfortable and stuffy, being crammed in such close proximity with so many other people. I like that they have a really extensive menu with lots of drinks and treats - hot and cold lattes, sundaes, shaved ice, cream puffs, cakes, you name it, they have it, all (or mostly) featuring matcha flavours. The Tsujiri sundae seemed to be one of their most popular items - crunchy roasted brown rice in a cup with a layer of red bean paste and topped with soft serve (either vanilla, matcha, or a mix of the two), a sakura cookie, a mochi and a chestnut. At the end of the day, it wasn't at all bad - the soft serve was smooth and creamy, unlike at other places (I'm looking at you, Sweet Jesus!) and the red bean paste added a nice touch of sweetness. The rest of it... I'm not sure. The brown rice was kind of interesting in that it had a really strong roasted flavour and added a different texture to the whole thing, which was kind of cool, but I found the flavour to be too strong and too bitter and overpowered the matcha and everything else. I don't know what sakura is supposed to taste like, but the cookie tasted like coconut to me. I overall thought the sundae was kind of cool to try and it looks great (lovely for those instagram photos!), but didn't love it enough to especially want to come back. I don't know if it's just that they're understaffed, but they had two people prepping food and they were just taking their sweet time with each order. Although the wait wasn't terrible (30 mins), even then I didn't think it was worth the time spent or the money ($8+). I think I would come back here if there were only like 2 other people here, but would not line up for more than 10-15 minutes. read more

An hour wait for ice cream and a drink? Serious? Yes serious. If you want to live in the hype line up, if not just wait a couple months and come back. Hate to write bad reviews but I need to write honest reviews. Service is terribly slow, makes the line super long on weekends. Puffs and macaroons are already done though so I assume those are fast but the line to even get an order down will be an hour on weekends. And after an hour of watching them make soft serves, shaved ice and floats... It's pretty inconsistent. The portion I got was on the smaller side so definitely not impressed. I'm not a crazy green tea addict but I would still say I like green tea. It does have a very strong matcha taste for their soft serve but honestly can get some premium matcha from jtown or some Japanese places and make my own. If there is no wait I would definitely recommend coming. But a line out the door... Up to you if you want to live in the hype. Sorry. I'll easily bump this review up when service speeds up. read more

Ordered a matcha yuzu citron float. Perfect combination in this summer weather. The yuzu citron was light and refreshing; the softserve matcha is creamy and rich. The price is quite steep for the serving size. Seating is limited but there is a nice area tucked at the back for group hangouts (one group only). Would recommend if you're in the area craving some softserve! read more
