Wanted to see what the hype was all about, but waited for it to die down first before visiting. I didn't have to wait and walked straight in to order. It's an ipad ordering system so you don't really interact with the staff when ordering at all. I got the matcha latte to set the bar of how this spot will taste. It's made with ceremonial grade matcha from Kyoto and milk of choice - opted for Oat milk. It was okay, and lacked some depth in the matcha. It's quite a large cup and I felt like I tasted mostly milk. Got the Blu matcha latte. It's mixed with blueberry lavender ube, topped with matcha. Colour wise, the purple was vibrant and had a great contrast colour to the green matcha. However, I felt this also fell short with the lack of taste and depth. Overall, I think the matcha could be a bit stronger. Colour is good though. I quite enjoy their M2 location downtown a lot more, since it's mixed matcha alcoholic drinks. read more

If you're driving by and looking for parking, it's really hard to find the place, as there's no signage on the place. TLDR: Great matcha drinks but tbh I think their hojicha might ranker higher in my heart than their matcha HAHA -[ICED CHERRY CHOCOLATE HOJICHA] $7.50 I like to get mine made with oat milk (+$1) but I imagine works well with regular milk too. I tried their hojicha drinks when they were doing BOGO50% off but holy moly, their cherry chocolate hojicha is the PERFECT drink. I was enamored from the first sip and I will 100% be getting it again even at full price -[ICED STRAWBERRY HOJICHA] $7.50 I actually got it at -$4.25 because of the aforementioned BOGO50% off but had this one made with oat milk too. Their strawberry syrup is on the sour end when compared to the cherry so keep that in mind. Still very solid but the cherry one definitely has my heart. The placement of the ordering station vs where you should wait is a little awkward in store but they are quite quick with their service. Ughh .. The service is like 5 stars. The pastries are 4 stars. The matcha drinks? ... Sadly, the namesake item of this place was a lil disappointing. First off, I would have to agree w/ what other reviewers mentioned about the line. It's not the best ordering system having one digital POS kiosk and everyone using the same iPad. If you have questions you want to ask the staff before picking something, you'd feel tremendous pressure cuz essentially you're holding up the line behind you by taking your time. My gf and I visited when the hype around this new location had died down considerably. But there was STILL a waiting line. We ordered the BLU drink which was supposed to be blueberry, ube, lavender all comboed with matcha. While the matcha didn't have clumps, regrettably both my gf and I felt the drink was a lil too sweet. It didn't have as dark a matcha flavour as we had hoped and there wasn't much blueberry coming through either. It was mainly the sweet ube that was overpowering. Maybe on a future visit I will pick something that has a heavy matcha concentration just so I can see if the matcha flavour shines through more. Absolutely gas. My mom and I got the BLU, Tokyo Fog and the ice cream. Both drinks were layered with different flavours and surprises. BLU started with a nutty & creamy uppercut of the fresh ube, shocking my taste buds, then the blueberries and lavender followed with subtle snap japs to the whole experience. The subtly sweet and bitter flavours of the Kyoto ceremonial grade matcha resurfaced at the end, finishing my taste buds on the ground with a kimura arm lock. Yet, I still walked away with a smile. The Tokyo fog had entirely different layers of experience--it was more like a musical duo of matcha and Earl Grey tea. It tasted like a song with harmonic parts. That fucking soft serve ice cream was also something else. I only wish they got some red beans and rice balls (dango) to complete the whole Ujikintoki experience like a proper Kyotoian, if you will. But man, Matcha Matcha was already more than good enough. I know using boxing and BJJ terminologies sounded rather ridiculous, but trust me, that whole journey of flavours was delightful and stunning. Both drinks were quite sweet and tasted a bit artificial to me, the Banana Brûlée especially reminded me of banana medicine. On the other hand, I enjoyed the Blu Matcha, which had a pleasant taro-like and floral note, though I still couldn't pick up much of the actual matcha flavor in either drink. Bring your patience when you visit. The store has been open for a few days, and there was still a line. In total, I waited for around 30 minutes from getting in line and getting my order. Service was actually pretty quick from ordering and receiving my order. I ordered the blu (blue + lavender) and got a free soft serve as part of their opening promotion. I loved the flavour of the soft serve but not the drink. I'll have to try another flavoured drink next time. I wish that we could choose the amount of ice in the drinks because the cup is almost filled with ice first and then the actual drink. There is some seating along the wall and window with small tables, but I feel that this is not a place to hang out for a long period of time. Parking is horrendous in this plaza. The menu has a wide selection of different matcha flavors and they have milk substitutions. We had the Strawberry Matcha and the White Chocolate Pistachio Matcha. This is the lab location and they have some tools display there which is cool and cute. I ordered Cheesecake & my friend ordered coco pandan. I love cheesecake, the cheese milk foam on top is yum and rich. I lined up from 1:20 PM to 2:35 PM during their opening weekend on Sunday to try and catch the opening special. Unfortunately, we missed the buy-one-get-one-half offer, which ended at 2 PM. The line was really long and moved slowly, so we didn't make it in time. The worst part was waiting outside in the freezing cold, and they didn't let many people inside the store, even though there was space. At one point, they had to reset a machine or something, and we ended up watching the staff have what looked like a mini meeting with their manager right at the front of the store, in full view, while we stood outside in the cold. The windows were clear, so we saw everything (including the workers just standing). Someone let us in finally after they came out and we said we waited for an hour+. While waiting, we read through a lot of reviews, and at the time, their Google rating was 2.9. Most people mentioned the same issues we were experiencing: inefficient operations and a lack of customer service. There were several workers just standing around, and to top it off, they only had ONE iPad for ordering which is questionable, especially for an opening weekend and knowing how popular their first location in Toronto is. I ordered the Blu Matcha, which combines blueberry, lavender, and ube. My cousin got the Yuzu Lemonade. My drink was good. There's no option to adjust ice or sweetness, but it wasn't overly sweet, and I liked the unique flavor. It was $7.50. Honestly, I can't say it was worth the hour-long wait but at least it wasn't bad. The ice cream part was very smooth, which I appreciated. That said, I wouldn't buy the icecream for $7 either. I had a few sips of my cousin's drink, too. The Yuzu flavor was strong, but the matcha was pretty much nonexistent. The worker mentioned this beforehand and said it was her favorite, but if you're expecting a matcha-forward drink, this isn't it. You can add an extra shot for $2, but considering they already know the matcha is barely there, maybe their recipe should just include the extra shot by default. Still, it was refreshing, and they used Perrier. They have a variety of drinks that sound unique, but the one I tried today was not particularly tasty. I have not tried the original matcha latte here, and it will be something to get next time, but as for the specialty drinks, they do not resonate with my preferences. The almond croissant was also just OK. There was not nearly enough almonds to give it the almond-y taste that you would want. And lastly, the main point I want to include, is the price. This place is a lab/warehouse setup style - it's actually big - but the seating area and the ordering area is a bit cramped, especially when there are crowds. There are some small seating available - great for a quick catch up session - but I wouldn't say you can really do work here like a cafe. Staff were pretty nice and they help answer any questions you have about their drinks and pastries. Drink/Pastries I think with all the reviews here, the self ordering system can get a little intimidating when you don't know what to order or where to search. With having only one machine, you do feel pressured not to hold the line (especially when it's so popular with everyone lining up right now). I would like go to their IG/website and have a browse while you're waiting to have some idea. Their drinks range anywhere around $6 to $8-ish before tax. It's single size - I would say it's like a medium cup size - so I'd say the volume is justifiable with the taste. I don't know enough about matcha and I can't comment too much - but I have tried this place a few times and some of their drinks are a hit or miss. The match Blu (blueberry lavender ube) and Coco Pandan (coconut pandan) were pretty good. As a tip, you really gotta swirl well and mix well with the matcha and the base before you drink it - otherwise it feels very plain. You can always add some extra sweetness to it afterwards if you like. I would recommend their pastries - their almond and pistachio croissant were very flavorful and it was very buttery. Not too sweet, pleasantly complimented with the matcha, a great treat. Although a little on the pricey side, $9, I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way often to indulge on a $$ matcha drink (it's not that serious)-- but to dispel the hype, the drink is good. Quality wise great. Not too sweet which I love. Overall, I would recommend, but it is a little pricey for just one drink. Would I go out of my way if it wasn't in my area? Probably not. I've tried their Strawberry, Banana Brûlée, Chai, and Tokyo Fog Matcha so far. My favorites are the Banana and Tokyo Fog. The drinks were decent, but I wish the matcha flavor was stronger. They were all quite sweet, and you can't adjust the sugar level for the Banana and Strawberry since they're made with syrup. The store itself is quite small, and due to their promo, you'll likely have to wait outside. On the weekend the wait was over an hour and weekday I still had to wait 30-40mins I think they could have organized it better so customers wouldn't have to stand in the cold, especially since half the store is used for storage. They also only have one order station, which slows down the process even more. I was really excited to try this place after hearing great things about the Toronto location, but overall, I found it disappointing. Definitely better matcha options in markham. I visited Matcha Matcha on the grand opening Sunday and there was a long line waiting outside since the store capacity was limited. Parking was somewhat difficult in this plaza since all the spots have reserved signs and there are only two parking spots assigned to Unit #8 of which one was blocked by a pylon. I ended up waiting 1.25 hours in line and another 5-10 mins after ordering. Unfortunately it was quite cold (below freezing temperatures in March) and it felt like the employees were not too empathetic about their customers waiting outside. When the manager (and I presumed she was the manager since I saw her giving a pep talk to the rest of the team) heard that we had waited for 1 hour outside, all she had to say was "oh". There was only one iPad available for ordering which was the main reason behind the very slow service. Perhaps they didn't envision such popularity on their opening weekend, but given how the downtown location is always busy, I would expect them to have better anticipated this locations demand and added a second iPad. The service station is a counter measuring 1.5 to 2 meters and all the drinks and food are prepared out in the open. They measure the ingredients within each drink by weight to ensure consistency. I ordered the Lemonade (sparkling matcha lemonade with yuzu; $7 total) which is made with their yuzu lemonade concentrate, Perrier sparkling water, and matcha. They don't allow for ice or sugar customization. The matcha taste was incredibly light (almost nonexistent) so I would recommend adding extra matcha for $2 if you're looking for a stronger taste. Otherwise, the yuzu lemonade was quite refreshing and I would recommend it for a hot summers day. Since it was the opening weekend, they had a promotion for a free matcha soft serve (originally $7) with the purchase of a drink. The matcha soft serve was good and it was a nice touch to sprinkle a little matcha on top of it. They also offer baked goods and pastries, but I wasn't inclined to try them. I would be inclined to visit the store to try another drink, but I'm not rushing to come back in the near future. This location does not yet have signage over their door so it's easily missed nestled between a few busy stores in the plaza. There's limited parking because all the parking spots are reserved for the adjacent stores. VERY busy location and limited seating inside. If you're lucky to get a seat, there are so many people inside that it's not enjoyable. Hopefully this will improve overtime when the hype dies down. Other than that, it is a fully self serve order menu with about 10-15 varieties. I have tried several drinks here, and while you can see them preparing the matcha in the open kitchen area, the matcha flavour is not as strong as you'd assume for a place named Matcha Matcha - for instance, BLU is a lavender blueberry ube, and in earnest the matcha flavour is barely there. I visited Matcha Matcha's newest location near First Markham Place. Just a heads-up--there's no signage yet, so you'll need to look around a bit once inside the plaza. The space is small and intimate, with the front half functioning as the café and the back acting as storage. It's not the most visually appealing setup, so I'd recommend takeaway over dine-in. Service was excellent as always. I had the Pandan Matcha, which struck a perfect balance between the rich bitterness of matcha and the sweetness of pandan syrup. A lovely, well-crafted drink. I also noticed this spot has been getting some low review scores--and after seeing the BOGO chaos over the weekend, I get why. People were lining up for ages, and while I was in the area too, I knew better than to risk my health for a BOGO deal. If you're curious, the offer runs March 21-30, from open to 2PM. I went Monday morning right at opening and had no issues--just plan smart and ahead, lol. Overall, if you're after good matcha and live in the Markham area, it's still worth checking out.
