I was excited to check out improv comedy on a Friday night with my family and this didn't really hit the mark for us. It is in a small space, so that's something to keep in mind. It was unfortunately really hot in the theater and not sure if they don't have AC or it was down, but the only area that was cool was by the front doors, not in the main place where the show was held. We came in on a game show day. The actors tried their best, but it just was really one note, lackluster and not funny, at least to us. It seemed like there could have been more of a mix between more advanced actors vs newbies/students...or at least it seemed that way. They did take audience recommendations, like Who's Line, and that helped keep us engaged. Things seemed to drag on, otherwise, and we wished there was more creativity, quickness and wit displayed. Fun night of entertainment at the Tucson Improv Movement. The students did a great job with the improvisation games and we enjoyed watching. The instructor emcee had a buzzer which I found a bit irritating. She kept things moving forward, albeit, so fast scenes were not allowed to develop. It was a student showcase and the theatre was full. After the student showcase was an Improv Troupe, I forget their name. They were good but I lost interest after about 10 minutes of the same game. The cost is reasonable at $5 plus the cost of refreshments which are available in the lobby. We lucked out and found parking in front. Others in our group parked down the street but it didn't seem to be difficult to find a space. I love supporting local theatre and would definitely go again. read more

My friend Yvonne invited me to her story telling night. I had never been to an improv show which was on my bucket list! I was so shocked by how fun the show was! I could never get up on stage and act out a scene like all of their talented and funny staff did! Tickets to shows can be purchased online. So I have been to 4 shows here, and I am now taking the Improv 101. I was thinking I was going to wit until after I finished the class and had my showcase to write a review, but I'm not. I had been wanting to take an improv class for a long time, because it is always good to try something new. Tucson Improv Movement, or TIM for short, is a wonderful place to laugh and learn. The venue features brick walls and big windows and it just feels inviting walking in. The cost of attending a show is definitely a bargain at $5! TIM has a varied lineup of shows with each showtime incorporating a newer cast along with another more veteran cast which I think is a great way to get new talent stage time they need to learn while still making sure the audience has a fabulous time. They also have beer, wine, and snacks for sale in the lobby and take an intermission during each one hour show block which is nice so you can stretch your legs. My personal favorite teams are: Laugh Tracks, Como Se Dice (Spanish language team), Soapbox, The Riveters, and The Dating Scene. For families with kids they even have a kid's show on the second Saturday of every month- Friends of Make Pretends. The wonderful thing about this theatre is that they are always mixing it up with different ideas for teams or formats. I love that you always get to see something unique. The other big part of TIM are the classes. From Improv to Stand Up to Sketch they've got something for everyone. The teachers are veteran company members who have a wealth of knowledge on how to find the funny fast and break it down so us mere mortals can try. I've been fortunate enough to attend improv classes taught by Zack Armstrong, Susan Lionetti, Andrew Hatch, and Daniel Kirby and I cannot say enough wonderful things about each of them. They try to set the classes up so that the same group of students will get a different teacher in each level because they all have so much to share. So we returned here for another show. Most Fridays and Saturdays they have a show. The show we saw (7:30) was in two parts, and lasted a bit over half an hour (maybe 45 minutes?). For $5 I think it inexpensive. Best to arrive a little early as apparently this place is popular. They were FULL. The first segment of the show was what they call "short format" improv. Sort of like "Whose Line Is It Anyway". It was rapid-fire, and very entertaining. The second segment was different, and a bit slower. I suspect it was more difficult for the performers, and it showed. But they are students, and it is unreasonable to expect Jonathan Winters. Such prodigies are extremely rare, so you would be incredibly fortunate if one showed up in this class. And at $5 they aren't charging you for Jonathan Winters! For an inexpensive evening of entertainment, and to support local "theater", this is a good option. My visit last year was flat, as I said at the time. This visit was much more entertaining. From the laughter I would say this audience agreed with me. read more

Not sure what I was expecting here, but it was a fun date night. For $5 each, plus snacks, we laughed and enjoyed the silliness. I found it as an event on Facebook, bought tickets on our phones and snacks at the door. There were so few of us in the audience, it was a little awkward, but I give them props for putting themselves out there, and of course, some actors are better than others. The address in GPS put us in the ally behind it, but it was easy enough to find and we found parking right out front. I would go again- I'm guessing the content changes every time since it's improv? We went to raise money for a non profit and they way they did it was super cool $5 went to these wonderful people and $5 went to the non profit. We all loved it and I have already made plans for my return. Cheap as can be + it's downtown so you can go have continued fun after the show. The shows are outstanding, especially for the price. I've been to six shows and each one is hilarious and fun and such a great time. Shows on Saturday are at just the perfect time in the evening...not too early and not too late. I love the energy and that the performers have such a great time on stage. TIM is such a solid, fun, and cheap night out! Great location, grab food or drinks on 4th and kill some time playing pinball next door before or after. They have lots of improv comedy to choose from every weekend with several shows a night with different formats or teams. I'm a fan of the "Soapbox" in which an interesting Tucsonan or local celebrity shares stories about their life, then the TIM folks improvise a scene loosely inspired by random details from the story. When I went I saw people on dates, families with older kids, and people of all ages. They even have just-for-kids shows on Saturday afternoons called "Friends of Make Pretends" which I hear is interactive and lots of fun. Someday I will take their Improv 101 class. Yes, sometimes things get awkward for a second on stage but part of the fun of improv is seeing people make something totally unique right before your eyes...embrace the weirdness! There are many different improv teams who perform at TIM, with varying styles or levels of experience, so try a few and find your favorites. I loved the long-standing, all-female Riveters team when I went and will be keeping an eye on the schedule for their shows! read more

Visiting TIM is one of my favorite "date night"/cheap entertainment options. I want to be very fair to the performers and audience members alike, so here goes: This place is super cheap. $5 for an hour+ worth of entertainment? That's awesome! Do some of the jokes fall flat? Of course they do - this isn't Second City (and even there they have *crickets* every night). Do I find myself laughing out loud multiple times during the shows? Yes - and I leave with a smile on my face. Honestly, coming here is cheaper and less of a hassle than going to Laffs, plus you can play pinball when you're done! I've never been when it's full, so it's easy enough to waltz in 1 minute before show time. I think all of the reviews have been very fair - if this is your first time visiting an improv theatre, just know that silliness/corniness/overly enthusiastic performers are part of the deal. I love seeing how much fun they are having, and I'm grateful for all the laughs they've given me so far! I look forward to more shows! read more

TIM's improv classes are the best entertainment value going in town. $150 for six weeks of classes that are 2.5 hours each. So, since you're a robot like me who calculates entertainment value at $/hr, you're thinking, "$10 an hour, that's the cost of a first-run 3D movie and a snack." Well, the price also includes the exhilarating joy of PERFORMING, and as many viewings of TIM shows as you want, for free! If you saw every TIM show, every week, that brings your $/hr rate to ~$3.89/hr. The TIM experience, however, s QUALITATIVELY great. Stop doing all that division, you robot! TIM classes are a blast. They are thoughtfully, tightly designed. It's a little theory and a lot of practice, and the practice is fun. Everyone is unilaterally positive, which kept me going although I am shy. It's not a total sausage party. The instructors' feedback is supportive and honest. TIM reminds me of my crazy, brilliant friends from high school -- the same deep joy of having injokes with your tight knit friends. The only bad thing I can say about TIM is the theater has only swamp cooler & it can get sticky sweaty in the summer. OTOH, this is the desert, so I deal with it even though I am #teamairconditioning for life. read more

So happy to add TIM to my downtown date night (or hang out night/bar hop night...) line up! One of my co-workers performs here and invited us to the (first annual!) Tucson Comedy Arts Festival. It was a great intro to the group, and since then I've been back several times to kick off a night downtown or just to have a cheap, fun option for an evening out. They have two shows at 7 and 9 on Fridays and Saturdays and it's $5 for an hour or so long show. The show themes vary so it's fun to check out a few to find which format you like best. I personally am a fan of their Throwdown shows. There's lots of variety in the sketch formats and just enough audience engagement to make you feel like part of the fun. They also seem to pretty frequently host some different style nights (all females, hosting different Improv groups etc.) to mix things up. It is IMPROV so as the name suggests there can be some lulls in the 'funny' during some portions, but their games are generally formatted where the moderator (?) or another actor can step in to change the tempo if it starts to get a bit...painful. Generally however, I have laughed through every show, and it is well worth a visit. Plus, within walking distance of some amazing bars and restaurants makes it the perfect stop off when heading downtown. read more

I just finished six weeks in the Improv 101 class with Veronica. This was an outstanding introduction to what Improv can be when: you play with people who have your back, you listen, you create a relationship (ASAP), you listen, "YES AND", and....."get to the funny fast!" One of the most important tenants that T.I.M. supports is playing to your highest intelligence. So, we don't go for the cheap laugh, i.e., poop jokes and sexual innuendo. This makes T.I.M. great family fun. I appreciate the lack of expletives. I encourage ANYONE who is looking for a creative outlet, a way to put a kick in your step, or maybe you're just curious about improv, to check out their "drop in" class for 2 hours of FUN for $5.00. Just not that funny. Needs a referee to Stop and change when it's not funny. Gals from Phoenix. ... skit drug on like claws your back. The other performers laughed for them like a Laugh Cheerleading squad which made it even more weird and more obvious that they were NOT funny. The other reviews keep listing the cheap price ..... but that does not justify a comedy performance that is NOT funny. Nice setting except for LOUD pinball arcade next door that drowns out the female voices. The LOUD street noise of racing car engines and motorcycles. The performers should be miked. The announcer sounds like he used to work at a Strip Club .... from what I have seen in movies .... haha. "And now up on stage, we have the lovely Sparkles .." Darn, I was really hoping this would be funny and another fun venue .... oh well. Oh yes, the snacks and drinks are only $ 1 each ...... that's a selling point??? read more

Tucson Improv Movement is made up of great and funny people. While I haven't taken a class there, I sure do love to be an audience member! Each show I've been to (which is very reasonably priced, offering students tickets for only 3 dollars) has been worth every second. They are unique in Tucson in that they perform both short form and long form improv comedy shows. If you like what they do, you can take improv comedy classes starting at the beginner level and extending through advanced improv formats. I have been attending classes for the last 14 weeks. It has been a wonderful experience. The classes have been fun while helping me improve my speaking abilities. I teach fitness classes and while I am sure of my ability to instruct the participates, I needed the extra training being in front of people. Let me start this review off by saying I know improv is a hard thing to do, and I applaud the performers at TIM for their bravery. I could never do it. That being said... I did not enjoy myself. I went to the "Soapbox" at 9 which is on Fridays. A few of the jokes were ok, but I wouldn't say laugh out loud funny. I wish I had taken the time to write this review sooner so one could see my progression of falling in the love with this place. I have now taken 4 classes here and am on two improv teams at the theater and my opinion has only gotten stronger. There is a lot of talent in this place and it is IMPROVing all of the time! If you like to laugh and see comedy creation in real time, you have to come check out a few shows! At $5 per show, TIM has to be one of the best entertainment values in Tucson. A welcoming environment, high energy and lots of laughs. Sure, some skits are better than others and not every skit is professional quality but then these aren't professionals.
