Title: What I Learned About Power, Predatory Installers, and Being a Black Woman Homeowner in 2025 When I ordered two custom Tuff Sheds--one as a retreat space, the other for storage--I expected professionalism, quality, and customer service. What I received instead, from one subcontractor in particular, was a disturbing lesson in entitlement, cultural machismo, and predatory behavior that too often goes unchecked in home service industries. On the morning of my installation, a subcontractor named Jose arrived at my home, a two-story colonial in Pasadena. I greeted him kindly and offered a handshake. His demeanor was immediately cold and arrogant. Instead of assessing the job, he launched into a string of criticisms about my concrete slab, professionally poured and reinforced with metal pins exactly as required. Rather than problem-solve, he postured. He complained that the backyard was inaccessible due to a few tree limbs. I offered to open the gate to the driveway. He said no. I brought out three clippers. Still no. He insisted the job couldn't be done. Why? Because the "real" problem was that I wouldn't offer him extra money under the table. I now realize he expected a bribe. That's why he invented obstacles. That's why he walked around scowling, pointing, dismissing, and trying to assert power. His crew--non-English-speaking day laborers with paint-stained clothes and no professionalism--stood silently behind him, complicit or simply unable to object. Eventually, a second installer named Jesus arrived and took charge. Jesus was professional, respectful, and effective. And here's the kicker: he told me there was no problem accessing the backyard at all. Jose wasted two hours of my time, destroyed the peace of my day, and tried to intimidate me in my own home for the sake of extracting more money from someone he thought he could push around. Let me say this clearly: As a single Black woman homeowner, this experience was humiliating and frightening. I was made to feel like a mark, not a client. Like someone to be hustled, not someone to be respected. What's worse is that I now suspect the lead contractor and Tuff Shed representatives are aware of this happening and may turn a blind eye to it. When I expressed concern to Carlos Vega, I was met with vague reassurances and quiet deflections. No one offered to make things right. They simply moved on. Jose saw my home, my appearance, and my professionalism, and assumed I had money to burn. He tried to use that against me. But I am educated. I am articulate. And I will not be shaken by street tactics masquerading as skilled labor. I'm sharing this experience to warn others: If you are hiring a subcontractor through a major brand like Tuff Shed, ask for their name and credentials in advance. Document everything. Record your interactions if you feel unsafe or manipulated. If a worker starts inventing issues, ask yourself: Is this really about the job, or is it about money? Do not be afraid to send someone away if they behave aggressively or deceitfully. I paid over $16,000 for these sheds. That should have earned me respect, not coercion. I was not rude. I was not demanding. I was simply a woman expecting honest work for an honest price. This experience is not isolated. I've had a similar experience with a Home Depot delivery driver, who attempted to scam me for $200 to replace a hose that didn't need replacing. When I said no, he dropped his ask to $100. Amazing purchasing experience from start to finish. I called Tuff Shed after dealing with another company for two weeks. Currently undergoing home renovation, and was in desperate need of a shed. I called last Friday at 4 PM. David Perez walk me through the whole process and was very nice. Within the hour, he sent over pictures of the shed from the show room, paint and shingle colors, and a general quote. I sent over my color selections the same night. Next morning (Saturday) , David sent over the official quote and all the paperwork I needed to sign. I signed all the paperwork the same day and he let me know that someone would reach out on Monday to schedule installation. By Monday, the shed was scheduled to be installed the same Wednesday. It is now Wednesday and said shed has been installed. The men who came to install the shed were very nice and courteous. Went above and beyond to help make sure our site was properly prepared. Built the shed in about four hours and left. It took less than a week for me to get in touch with somebody to purchase a shed and to have that shed built . I initially bought another shed from a different company and for over two weeks I could not get a hold of anybody to help with scheduling . I talked to at least six different representatives from the company and got nowhere. I finally got fed up, cancelled that order and called Tuff Shed. I would've saved so much time and energy had I just called Tuff Shed to begin with. I would like to note that I do not personally know anyone that works at Tuff Shed. Best decision for a shed. From the time Daniel Mendoza answered the phone to final installation, the process was incredibly easy. I never had to leave my home. Daniel came to my house on a Sunday morning to inspect where I wanted the shed built...between two retaining walls, so a little unusual request. Daniel was great. Dan took the time before writing up the contract to come out and check the site to make sure what we decided upon would be the best solution for my site.
