Horrible experience dealing with them. We had a loved one who passed at Queen of the Valley and she was sent here afterwards. It was less than hers after her passing that we recvd a call to let us know that they would not recognize us to cremate and bury her. That although we were her care providers, signed orders with Dr at the hospital for ens of life etc.. they would not allow us to cremate and bury her as thr paperwork we had that the hospital honored wasn't what they wanted to see and therefore would not honor that we were her guardians. Were told they would have someone form the County call us. They then kept her onsite someowhere and we have been made to call County Guardianship Services over the oast week to get her remains back. We finally after a week of waiting for Tulocay to have someone call us found out how to reach staff by ourselves. The County now tell us we have to wait over 30days before they can let us know if we have any rights to put her to rest as they are going to search for next of kin and ask others if they want possession of her or to take over her burial. Then we were told as she was a Sonoma County resident that as they were Napa County we should see about moving her body here for the 30 days. It is beyond ridiculous. Who has the strength to do this after a long battle and passing? BEWARE !!! DO NOT ALLOW QUEEN TO SEND YOUR LOVED ONES HERE. Have a plan and go anywhere else. This has been an awful experience to deal with immediately after such a loss. Horrible bed side manner. read more

So, rating a cemetery. . . who would ever think in a time of grief, that you would have to RATE a cometary, but the woman who is in charge, is less than pleasant, a real pain in the you know what to work with. She acts like everything she does is an inconvenience, that the people who have questions are stupid, and that you are truly bothering her. I mean, lets face it. She works in a graveyard. It cannot be that difficult since she is serving the town of Napa to show a little care, empathy, and concern to try to actually be a helpful human being. I am kind of disgusted by her shortness, her unprofessionalism, and her lack of sensitivity in such difficult times. So with that said, understanding that I am sure she is not the owner, but just the first voice a person hears when they have to bury, cremate or deal with a death, . . . a little concern should be placed in this area as the first contact a person has. Other than the rude and unprofessional, uncaring front desk person, who acts like everything she does is an imposition, the grounds are beautiful. Just don't expect a warm welcome. coldness goes hand in had with the death here. read more

A former slave from Georgia, she stood up for her rights&those of her fellow African-Americans in the California frontier. I love to walk when I am in Napa and this is one of the most beautiful places to go. The groundskeepers keep this place spotless and super well maintained. This cemetery has been around since the 1700's as far as I can see. And their roses are stunning when they bloom read more

When my mother had a terminal illness, I met with people from Tulocay to make future plans. They treated me like it was another business transaction, not like it was one of the more difficult experiences I would go through in my life. They lost the family's cemetery paperwork not once, but twice! I had to call back to follow up with them, rather than they calling me back like they said they would. And then the receptionist chewed gum in my ear over the phone. While the new several million dollar building may be beautiful, being treated compassionately as a whole person meant more to me. So I went to Treadway and Wigger instead - which was amazing. Yeah, the new Tulocay facility looks pretty, but the service and people part of their services left a lot to be desired. read more

This cemetery is absolutely beautiful. I don't know if idealic is a word that you would want to use to describe the place where your father is buried, but it seems to fit. The grounds are full of giant oaks and beautiful old stones and plots. They keep amazing care of the grounds without killing off all the life or turning it into a golf course. It is one of the few places in the bay where I can really see the changing of the seasons. They are private and nonprofit. The staff is wonderful and caring. read more

Compassionate and empathetic...couldn't ask for anything more. My dear friend was a police officer and died of COVID-19. With that comes law enforcement ceremony however, given the pandemic, that was not possible. The family was so appreciative of the way Debbie from Tulocay presented options and made what accommodations she could. Since the family could not make it into the showroom, Debbie was kind enough to learn about my friend and her family and made suggestions and sent sample photos of a variety of urns that were suitable. She was even able to put the family in touch with a Chaplain that served their needs. Debbie did a fantastic job in making the procession to the funeral home special for my friend's surviving family members, friends, and her co-workers. While social distancing was in practice, my friend was honored in the most respectful and safest manner possible outside of the facility. Given the fact that no one can hug or physically comfort, Debbie made this experience as good as it could be under the circumstances. Debbie and Tulocay were a true blessing in such a dark time. read more

The facility is nice, but I've had problems with two funeral people on two separate occasions. I would love to say they were minor issues, but they involved a social security number and losing a form with sensitive information on it. The first time was Decemeber 2013 when they 1) couldn't get my mom's social security number correct after calling me 4 times (and even repeating it back to me correctly each time), 2) gave us all the information for costs and such, but didn't bother to tell us until after we picked a date and time that it would be extra and they "probably wouldn't have the staff to do it," 3) the funeral planner wasn't all that warm and friendly. The second time dealing with this business was recently for my father. He and I had filled out their online information form, which includes EVERYTHING they ask for at the meeting in person. We filled this out two months early.. only for me to find out the day of the meeting after his death to do the arrangements they lost all the information. I told the funeral director about the issues we had with mom, and that filling out the form ahead of time was supposed to make sure we didn't have the same problem again. The funeral director spent 20 minutes looking for it and couldn't find it, and it took an hour and forty minutes to finally leaving. They were supposed to call the other cemetary for my grandmother's maiden name, and I was supposed to call them with my dad's social security number. I came in a little over a week later to find out: they found the missing paperwork with all the information, so they didn't need the social security paperwork from me (but didn't call to tell me this). When I went in to the office before dad's service today, they ended up not writing in my grandmother's maiden name, but instead wrote unknown! This was supposed to already be taken care of by, but someone didn't do their job. So now, they are going to "look into it." What makes me upset is that he's now going to have an original death certificate, and an amended one that has to be attached to it because of their mistake. At least this funeral director was more compassionate compared to last time. I would recommend being really careful with paperwork and making sure it gets completed correctly. They made errors twice for two different people, one of which meant they couldn't report my mom's death until it was fixed! read more

I have always loved this cemetary. Most of my family is there..going back apx 80yrs. We still have a few unused plots. It is a beautiful place and always has been. I do miss the older gentleman that sat in front of the stone carvers and waved to passer bys. My mom passed unexpectedly. We were still in shock. We met the new director named Lon. He was cold, he shook my brother's hand, but not mine. He gave my brother a card, but not me. Then he went on to whine about his last employer at the City of Napa jail. I will not repeat the name, that is unprofesional in any business. It was so inappropriate it was more upsetting then our loss. He promissed he would call and let us know what day she would be laid to rest. He said at least 3 days in advance so we could be present if we cared to and say a few words. I called a couple times to find out when. Nancy said she saw no appts. I asked to speak with Lonnie, he was rude and cruel. He told me I will bury her when I please "probably the day the check clears". I remained calm and asked him to let me know when that happens I would greatly appreciate it. On my way to the doctor I got a panicked sad msg from my brother. He received a phone call that Mom had been buried the previous day. Maybe Lon needs to go back to working with criminals. It seems more his style. read more

Why ever would i want to rate this place! ? I've been here several times in the past year for family friends and ill tell you its never easy coming to a funeral. This establishment has been very accommodating (especially to us Mexicanos who pack the place like sardines ) and very empathetic towards our needs. This cemetery is gorgeous and well maintained. The one problem i do have is parking, but im sure when this place was established they didn't intend that everyone would have their own car. I have an odd sense of appreciation for cemeteries and this one is one of the ones i love to look at. Death is never an easy thing to talk about but at least bringing your loved one to rest here will be a bit easier knowing how well they maintain the grounds. read more

My grandmother was buried here in 2007 and my stepfather was cremated here and then transferred to a different cemetery. On both occasions Tulocay staff treated my family well and they were very professional. My grandmother's service was very nice and her grave site has been kept up very well. When we were handling my stepfathers cremation they were very knowledgeable about what we needed to do to transfer him to the other cemetery. I highly recommend using this cemetery/services when having to handle the loss of your loved one. read more

My Son 29 year old Son Passed away in July and we used Tulocay to do the cremation. From the beginning it was a complete nightmare. He passed on a Sunday and when I called on Monday morning they had no time to see us until Tuesday afternoon and when we got there we had to wait about 30 minutes. Then they screwed up the paperwork and lied about it. They tried to blame it on his doctor which I was in constant contact with and knew she had done what was needed. They told me I could pick up his remains on Thursday then changed it to late Friday afternoon. Again when we got there we had to wait for 30 minutes. When we got into the room the box with the remains was sitting on the table. The container was so hot it was almost to hot to hold. My husband and I was so distract. I had also ordered some memory cards to give at his service , that were printed with the wrong name and birthdate. They had to have them re-made and overnighted to us. They also screwed up the obit to put in the paper and I had to re write it twice. The woman helping us was horrible and honestly was in the wrong business. She could not have been any less sympathetic. Hopefully by writing this review, people will not be treated in this manner. Grief is difficult enough without having to pay for terrible traumatic service. read more

The funeral business is an industry. Families spend thousands of dollars when someone dies, and are vulnerable. Realistic reviews can be helpful. I am familiar with Tulocay, pass this Cemetery every day and have met some staff. I have no financial interests or positions in the death industry. Tulocay has positive features. It is a cemetery and memorial garden (they are different), and now a mortuary. The mausoleums are full, its grounds are popular and generally well tended and tidy. The staff is often attentive and professional, well behaved as most businesses. The director is knowledgeable about law and customs, considerate and mostly accommodating. Ownership is complex, that is, managed as a business while responsible to a trust. Then there are the problems: The grounds are badly managed. Some areas are embarrassing. More than 50% of the grass are weeds, unsightly Bermuda grass and clover. Some areas are bald. Few attempts are made to replace grass. While the grounds appear "grassy" and green, close inspection shows it is unkempt and barren. Large swaths are dry or never receive water. The Cemetery advertises its endowment yet very little funding is spent on replanting grass, and none on new sod. Yet the Cemetery has a well and storage tank. Water lines are deteriorating. There is no central water control; water faucets are controlled by hand, leading to erratic irrigation. Roses and other bushes that die are not replaced. Many beautiful, mature, old oak trees have died of sudden oak death and also are not replaced. Thus, lawns gradually lose shade, further jeopardizing remaining grass. Some olive trees were planted, providing fruit for maintenance staff, not shade for visitors. Since oaks need more than twenty years to mature, there is a future problem. There are comments about parking. Parking does not provide income. Selling expensive burial plots is profitable. The mortuary lot is inadequate for popular services. We see mourners parking in an unimproved lot or clogging narrow roadways. Workers can always improve. Tulocay is no exception. There are disillusioned, frustrated and disenchanted workers. Some maintenance men (there are no women) can be unkind. I wonder if this results from their discouraging, depressing work. Ultimately, behaviors are the responsibility of management. I have never seen a manager tour the cemetery unless selling plots. Cemeteries are not charities, they need cash flow to stay in business, pay wages and meet competition. We must expect the death industry to act as a "business." Unfortunately, mourning families cannot shop or negotiate. Tulocay pays wages, benefits and management perquisites. Tulocay is a respectably conscientious cemetery. There is room to improve its community image, service and relations. That requires positive management, good direction and planning, which sometimes appears wanting. read more

Our dad just passed away on November 30th and so the very next day we had to go down to the Tulocay Cemetery to look into pricing and packages that they had to offer, Tom who helped us, was very understanding and did nkt pressure us to get anything that we could not afford. All these expenses were coming out if our pockets bc our dad did not have a life insurance and Tom understood this. He took down most of the information he needed to start with then we left. We gave it a day to think it over and we got back to Tom the very next day, and told him what we wanted as for the services. We kept in contact thru out the week and make sure everything was all in line for the funeral services. So when Saturday came everything went all well as it can be. Funerals are never easy and they made it easier. They made dad look pretty good. They had our slide show and music playing during the viewing. Everything that we wanted the way we wanted they did it. We are very pleased on how professional Tulocay staff was towards us through this whole process. Thank you read more

I'm not quite sure how one 'rates' funeral services. My brother was to be cremated and because I live out of town, his remains were to be mailed to me. I was advised that I would be notified upon the completion of the cremation and when his remains were being sent so I would be prepared to receive them. After several days, I called to get a status and was told we were 'waiting on paperwork'. Two days later, my brother's remains were received at my home requiring signature (of course), however, not received by myself :( . I was never notified about the cremation or the shipment. It's not like I can take my business elsewhere..... read more

t seems odd to rate a cemetary/funeral service, as this is an experience no one enjoys or looks forward to. However, Tulocay handled the memorial service for a loved one recently. I did not make the arrangements or deal with the staff. However, I understand that they were most helpful to the family member who did. The service was held in a sort of chapel room and was pretty standard/basic. Afterward, everyone moved to a nearby room that opened onto a patio area. Food and beverages were served. Everything was well done, from the flower arrangements on the tables, to the food and the drinks. The staff were discreet and made sure to remove plates when needed, etc. There was a "party crasher" if you will - a woman who perhaps shows up at these services for the food. She didn't bother anyone, sat at a table outside, and I believe Tulocay staff were familiar with her and kept an eye on her. When she left, she tried to take one of the vases of flowers, but staff quietly spoke with her, put the vase back on the table, and escorted her outside. No drama, no fuss. I felt that Tulocay staff were very professional and considerate of family and friends at their time of loss. read more
