The service here is top-notch! Our server checked on our group frequently and made sure our drinks were always full. We visited around 10:30 PM on a Saturday, and it wasn't overly crowded, so we practically had the grill to ourselves, which made for a relaxed and enjoyable experience. I've always loved Turf Club, but this was one of the dumbest hospitality interactions I've experienced in a long time. Six of us walked in around 10 PM on a Saturday night. The dinner rush was clearly over, there were at least four empty booths, two of us planned on ordering food, and all six of us planned on ordering drinks. The door guy refused to seat us because apparently four people needed to be ordering food. Fine, maybe that's the rule. The bigger issue was his attitude. He was rude, condescending, and seemed far more interested in flexing what little authority he had than actually taking care of customers. Rather than using an ounce of common sense and filling one of the many empty booths, he chose to argue with a group of people who were literally trying to give the business money. His solution was for us to stand and eat or leave. So we left. The irony is those empty booths stayed empty, and Turf Club lost a group that would have happily spent a few hundred dollars on drinks and food. That's what happens when ego gets prioritized over hospitality. I've been coming here for years, but after this experience, I'm not sure I'll be back. read more

This feels like a must-stop when you're in San Diego. I've never been anywhere else like it! Red leather banquettes, martinis and old school dive bar vibes would've been enough to guarantee a good time, but then they bring you your steak RAW and you cook it yourself in the middle of the room!?! I love this place. Everyone loves this place. If you came for the great food, well, you came to the wrong place. The food is passable but that's not why you came. You came for the fantastic atmosphere, the camaraderie, and maybe the history (the place is around 70ish years old). This place has a very cool vibe but before you come, please know it is a communal grill where you have to cook your own food. There is no option for them to cook the food for you. As a vegetarian, there was no way to avoid cross contamination. I wish they had a grill in the back that they could grill the portobello mushrooms on. I had originally ordered the portobello mushroom sandwich but after seeing all the cross contamination, I canceled my order. Plus I'm not even sure how to grill a portobello, I was hoping yall would cook it with your expertise. After I canceled my order, the server did not stop to offer any other food or tell me my other options. He proceeded to ignore me and not make eye contact. I came here on a Friday night around 8 PM and it was packed! Luckily, we grabbed a spot at the bar while waiting for our table. I had a gimlet, which was pretty good. Once seated, we were placed right next to the communal grill--which was actually really fun because we got to watch everyone cook their meat. I ordered the 10oz flat iron steak, while others in my group got the chicken kabob and ribeye. Next time, I might go with a thinner cut since the flat iron took quite a while to cook. Came here after talking about it for a while and I had a great experience! The bar is huge and you can basically get any drink you want made. Tried the Sangria and was a bit disappointed with the lack of flavor, but the Sneaky Tiki was soooooo good! Aside from that, the vibe was good, nothing too special but an enjoyable crowd that kept to themselves. We ordered the filet mignon, a baked potato, house salad and a New York steak. The sides we good, the garlic bread was delicious and big, and the steaks were better looking than I expected. I came in thinking I would hate having to cook my own food, but at the end of the day, being on the grill is what brought the whole experience together. Had a great time here. Joined some friends from work for a night of Steaks and Spirits. Old school vibe, dark, red light hues inside. The bar has any cocktail you may like available. The bartenders were cool dudes, had good conversations while we waited for our booth. The grill is near the middle of the dining area, everyone finds a spot and add their items to cook. I ordered the Filet with a salad and potato. The steaks come with garlic bread, I slapped that on the grill too. There are several seasonings and sauces for flavor. The place was fun at first, but the experience quickly went downhill due to the manager, Sean. When I asked about a specific drink, he abruptly threw the menu down in front of me. My husband calmly addressed his behavior, and instead of de-escalating, Sean had us removed from the venue. Even the security guard appeared confused by the situation. Sean's conduct was unprofessional and unnecessarily hostile, and it completely overshadowed what could have been a good experience. I was visiting with the intention of recommending this place to guests staying at my vacation rentals, but based on this interaction, I can't in good conscience do so. I like the concept of grilling yourself and cooking the meat at your own temperature but at the same time I didn't like the idea of having just one grill in the entire restaurant bc if it gets busy you may not have space until someone frees up. But it doesn't take too long from my experience. I got the burger and I wish they offered fries but had a bomb potato salad to go with it! This place used to be our absolute favorite restaurant. We went for every occasion, family gatherings, and even just on a random nights - it is classic, comfortable, unassuming, and has a great vibe. But the quality has gone so significantly downhill recently. The steaks, which used to be solid, now are lower quality. They got rid of the best steak on the menu - the bourbon teriyaki ribeye. And the dirty martinis, which used to be literally the best martini I've ever had, now tastes like an olive brine salt lick rather than a well-balanced dirty martini. You have to order the martini slightly dirty and even then it's still too much olive juice. I would like to say this was an anomaly, but we've been here on at least three occasions recently and had the same experience each time. On top of all this, the prices have gone up. Which I absolutely get given that prices everywhere have gone up. But you can't raise the prices and have the quality and go by the wayside too. It's an absolute tragedy. Turf supper Club is legit! Do people still say that? Be a hole in the wall not so great experience, ends up being really high quality. You can't go here and not get an old fashioned, it's required. You also get to order whatever food you want to make yourself. There's an option of different kinds of steaks, burgers, even vegetarian options. At the end of the day, you do end up grilling your own food in a grill that's in the center of the room. I have no idea how they are able to have this grill, seems like it would be a fire hazard. But it's super communal. You're grilling your food with other people, and then going back to your seat and drinking/eating. In a dive bar! Or at least it feels like a dive bar. read more

I came here a decade ago and loved it. Life happened, and I totally forgot about this place, until i randomly remembered it again, and I've been questioning myself since as to why I let this awesome place slip through my fingers. Lawd, they're still amazing as much as they were 10yrs ago. The drinks (dirty martinis) are strong and tasty, the food (steaks) were so well marinated it makes you want to slap your in-laws mama LMAO. It's hibachi style (severed raw, and you cook at a community grill). Needless to say, try this place out if you haven't already. It's a very small establishment, wouldn't recommend for a group of more than 3 (seriously, you'll be CRAMPED in your booth exceeding this number). The place is dark, appearing to be a similar to a speak easy/ old strip club vibe (IDK) it's different for sure, but just give it a chance!! Promise you won't be disappointed. So this is an interesting place for a meal! I visited San Diego for a conference a few years ago, and spent the first couple nights at an Air B&B. The woman I was staying with lived around the corner from here. I arrived pretty late, around 10:30 at night, and once I got inside and sent her a message so she knew I was there she invited me to come over to Turf and hang with her and her friend. It was really kind and as awkward as I am I'd decided I needed to not be so quick to turn down invitations from people just because I was worried about not being able to make conversation, so I took her up on it. I'm glad I did, since TSC is a fun place to eat. I'll admit, I was a bit confused at the jump but it was fun and unusual hanging around with folks, both my host & her friend and people with other groups, whilst grilling. I'm honestly not sure I'd done any grilling before this--at least not more than maybe once, and not more than a single thing. Having a great drink to go with it (we were at a bar, after all) was a great way to cap it all off. I had the chicken kabobs both nights, and lived to tell about it, so looks like I cooked them well enough. The three of us returned the next evening, actually, with a couple other people, and it was a fair bit busier that night--a group of people celebrating a work thing and they were fun to hang out with. I was also there for work, and recommended it to some of my co-workers and friends later in the week. The decor isn't anything special; just an old-school place with a dive bar feel, that just happens to have a bunch of grills for people to cook their food at. Lots of big vinyl booths for you to get comfy in. I hope they never change a thing. They have live music on Sunday evenings, so I hope I find myself there on a Sunday sometime. If I do make my way to San Diego again, I'd love to take someone here; I'd be pretty surprised if any of my friends had been there before. If you are with someone who doesn't like places where you have to do any of the work yourself (pick out elements of your meal to be cooked, etc.) then skip it with them, but otherwise why not do something different? Great for the extroverts and creators, not so much if you want to be lazy :) - Would never expect from the outside of the place that there is a swanky cocktail bar and grill inside here! Get a drink at the cocktail bar while you wait for a table ( no reservations !), and be blown away by their cocktails ! 9-10 bucks on average for a cocktail - prices are fair and their cocktails are delicious. I ordered a gin gimlet and it was shaken with lime juice , bit of simple syrup and it the refreshing factor was through the roof ! So delish. Luckily the place has great vents and AC so you don't smell like charred meat and garlic bread .. therefore it's a bit chilly ( bring a light jacket if you get cold easily). From all types of steaks , burger option, chicken abs sides ... it's simple but something for everyone. The steaks are no frills so you order , and then cook it at the communal grill. I do wish they had suggestions for how long to cook each type of item ... maybe even thermometers as I had to go back once to cook my middle of center raw filet , but it was delicious non the less. The giant garlic bread was delicious and you can also grill those as well ! I've been coming here for years. Usually it's a great time until my visit on 1/25/23. After spending $120 on ribeyes and drinks, Kubiak bartender cut me off after I accidentally spilled a drink while showing my friend some photos of a recent family ski vacation in Utah. The bartender treated me as if I was an international drug kingpin. It's a bar. Sometimes drinks get spilled. It happens. For this violation of decorum in this fine dining establishment, I was cut off. Last time I'll go to the Turf Supper Club. Too bad 1 bartender has to ruin the entire experience. I have to be honest, super disappointed with the "security" here. I am type one diabetic and live less than a block away , and this is one of me and my girlfriends go to spots. But recently, a somewhat tall, bearded doorman refused me and our entire party entry because he claimed I was "wobbly." At the time, it was 11pm and my blood sugar was dropping, and I had treated it but was waiting for it to rise, but when I went to have a conversation with the doorman he continued to belittle my disease and tell me to my face I was simply "too drunk" to enter.
