I came here on a Thursday around 7 pm to meet friends for trivia, and the place was packed. It was a great turnout. Fun energy. Trivia usually starts at 6 pm, but they pushed it back because of the Padres game. The service was excellent from start to finish. I ordered a cocktail off their menu then asked for a cucumber martini, and they had no problem making it. It turned out great. We shared the pizza, wings, and fries, and everything tasted great. The service was awesome all night despite how busy they were. Overall, such a fun night. Great energy, good food, and delicious drinks. Definitely a spot I'd come back to. read more

Came here a couple of times and mainly for cocktails. Street parking can be tough in the area so just be aware. I came here one time during Comic Con and it was super crowded here but the second time I came was on a Friday night and was surprisingly empty, but it could be cause we came when they were an hour away from closing. The drinks are pretty good overall if you want some cocktail and want somewhere to enjoy your time and socialize with friends. It can sometimes get a bit loud or it can be pretty chill depending on the day and time. This place has tons of reviews, and I didn't eat any food except delicious waffle fries. I came here after the Padres got swept by the Rays and with many other disappointed Padres fans. I've never been here before, so it was a treat to run into this place. A friend brought me here because I didn't even know this bar existed. I loved all the open windows, which helped lighten up the "steampunk" decor. The bar was cool, too; I liked the display of the liquor bottles against the window; the mirror looked like another window due to the mirror being so clean and well-lit. I am not a big cocktail drinker, but I occasionally enjoy a Dirty Kettle Martini. I sampled their vodka, and it wasn't bad at all; it's better than the good stuff most bars have on deck. They had Fallbrook Chardonnay, my favorite house wine, so I was pretty happy. I hear they have trivia nights, so I may have to come downtown one week to play. I heard they have vegan mac and cheese; I am also dying to try that out. It is a hip place with nice servers and bartenders. We came here before a Sunday Padres game for a drink and bite before heading into the game. Lucky for us they have all day HH on Sundays. We got the Curly Fries first which were well seasoned and nice and crispy. The we ordered the Carnitas and Blackened Fish Tacos with the intent of sharing them so that we could each try them both. The fish tacos were outstanding...well seasoned blackened freshly grilled fish. The Carnitas were good too but a little bit on the salty side. As if that weren't enough we decided to get the 5 Cheese Pizza once I got a second old fashioned. The pizza was delicious....nice thin bubbly crust and a TON of yummy cheese. That pizza was A+! Our bartender was also very friendly and attentive as well....which is always a nice bonus when everything else is a positive. I will definitely be back again to try the other menu items. Storyhouse is our spot for Friday happy. I would say we come to storyhouse probably 3-6 times a month. Sometimes just for drinks, or happy hour and a snack, and sometimes for dinner. The parmesan garlic fries are delicious and just right for a snack while having a beverage. Their wagyu sliders are also delicious and we are a big fan of their pizzas. They have a full bar and as I went into detail on in my first review for them a number of years ago, they distill their own liquor: Vodka, Gin, Bourbon and Rye. We typically have their classic Old Fashioneds, but their Storyhouse Margarita and Rookie Season are also quite tasty. Most of the time everyone is very friendly and attentive. We enjoy the casual fun vibe. I love their indoor/outdoor feel when the big "garage" windows are up and that they are dog friendly. While our pup hasn't made the wall of dogs yet, they do have a Woof menu and he loves the patty. Very happy with this establishment being in our neighborhood. read more

Personally not my thing but I can appreciate the depth of quality. FOOD 4.5/5 Tuna Taro Taco (trio): Unique crunchy taro shell filled with soy marinated ahi, a nutty edamame purée, and spicy pickled cucumber. I only wish I had more. These are on the smaller side. 4.5/5 Pesto + Ricotta Pizza with added chicken: Tart oven roasted tomatoes, bright lemon zest, nutty pine nuts, and dashes of melted mozzarella and pesto make this quite a pizza combination. I personally prefer a thicker layer of toppings, and may opt for a thicker crust next time. PARKING Street parking is limited. I parked four blocks away in a paid lot - $12 for four hours. P.S. Great drinks, but the vibes turned fast. there are better spots in SD imo. i'm not usually one to review, but when it's warranted, it's warranted.... here's what happened, I asked for the tab after finishing our drinks. it was taking a while so i went and asked someone if i could quickly square up since we had a bday dinner reservation, and were already running late. I tipped 28% on the presented bill and closed out. They told me they were giving the birthday girl "on the house" shots and followed me back to the table. Cool, right? Nope. The GM kept whispering to our server, in front of us...while she was still talking to our group (it was awkward and we all noticed). the GM then came over to me saying I still owed... $1.03 from the tab i had previously closed? Weird, but I paid it and tipped again on the dollar amount. Then he tells me, "You don't tip. You keep hitting no tip." I was genuinely confused as I had tipped twice already (and i have the charges on my card to prove it). When I asked for clarity, he started walking away and got passive-aggressive, clearly not wanting to talk about it anymore. The theme of the conversation was "you need to pay back the discount on the original bill by tipping us the difference" (i was not aware we had a discount on the initial bill since i was in a hurry and just tapped my phone to pay the bill quickly. I was not provided a receipt upon initial payment). i apologized for the potential miscommunication on my end and they were still very weird about it. In the end, I tipped around $72 for one round of drinks and one round of shots. It felt rude, aggressive, and honestly like I was being taken advantage of. Loved the cocktails. but I did not love the way it ended, the icky vibe we had walking out of there and greed veiled in generosity. in all my years of wining and dining in san diego- this has literally never happened. Storyhouse Spirits is a solid spot for good cocktails when you're downtown. Even better is that they have an excellent happy hour with drinks and vegan options, and they produce their own spirits! Having been there twice now, I can say with confidence that the service is great, even when they're busy. Both servers we've had have been super cool and checked in with us before happy hour ended to see if we wanted another drink. The upstairs seating area (indoors only) is lovely and has a classier, relaxed vibe with a great view of the Central Library across the street. Downstairs has a lively, slightly sports bar feel along with patio seating. Current HH cocktail offerings are a bourbon old fashioned, a gin gimlet, and a vodka mule. I've tried them all and prefer the old fashioned as it's well balanced and smooth, without any harsh alcohol burn despite being a boozy drink. The gimlet was tasty but a tad heavy on the lime for me, and the mule had some harsh notes to it that I couldn't quite get past to properly enjoy the drink (but my husband enjoyed it). As for vegan food, they have a vegan slider and fries on the HH menu. Both were delicious! The burger was a Beyond meat patty topped with sautéed mushrooms and onions on a pretzel bun slathered with chipotle vegenaise. It was a finger licking umami bomb! The fries were hot, crispy, and nicely salted. FYI, these are the only vegan offerings on the regular menu at this time. It would great if they added a few more options in the future. Something to note is that the restaurant adds a 3% surcharge to your bill (called "EE surcharge", supposedly to cover rising cost of labor, operational expenses, etc.), but I didn't see this mentioned anywhere on their menu. While it's not a lot, I prefer full disclosure and don't like when these charges suddenly appear when I'm about to pay. Overall a good experience and I look forward to a return visit. read more

The boyfriend and I, came here for a corporate event. We arrived on-time and they already had appetizers going around. The first round of hors d'oeuvres consisted of toasted ravioli (cheese only inside) with a spicy marinara sauce. Those were very good, but did have a kick to them. They served flatbreads; margarita style pizza and chicken pizza. The margarita pizza was really good! I enjoyed the Brussel sprouts very much. They were super sweet, in what tasted like a balsamic vinaigrette maybe? In any case, very tasty and I don't even like Brussel sprouts. Other hors d'oeuvres that were brought out; pieces of salmon and steak. And they served these flakey biscuits that had spinach and cheese inside them. Those were soooooo yummy. The desserts were cheesecake, chocolate cake and a raspberry, pistachio tart. The food and appetizers were great. This venue has an upstairs area for drinks and food and a downstairs with the bar area. If you sit downstairs there are homeless people that will walk by on the sidewalk. So be careful of them. The upstairs was nice and cozy. The bathrooms had cute walls and were clean lol Our service though. We had amazing service! I don't know the name of the waitress that checked in on us constantly, but she was so good. She was friendly, personable and made sure we were taken care of the whole night. Nice bar, good tvs and of course great food and drinks. They must have a legit Chef because the food was fantastic. We had the Garlic Parm waffle fries. The Japanese chicken bites, the Cuban, fried chicken sandwich. Everything was really tasty, good portion was served fast, hot and fresh. The distillery has really good cocktails with a really awesome happy hour. This place needs the support from community as it may not be too busy on non game days.
