Angry Erik is a delightful brewery in North Jersey that stands out for a few reasons:…read more 1. Viking themed. Fun Viking flourishes all around the taproom like a giant flag behind the bar. 2. One of the northern most breweries in the state. 3. While NJ breweries legally can't have kitchens and serve cooked food, this brewery has by far the most amount of snacks on offer out of any NJ brewery I've been to. Peanuts, pretzels, jerky, tortilla chips and salsa, etc. and even an indoor s'mores kit complete with a portable flame for roasting your marshmallows right at your seat. 4. Huge menu given the size of its taproom. I counted 18 beers on tap + a variety of hard seltzers. Some of the beers are absolutely bonkers (exhibit A, your Honor: a mushroom and rosemary saison). My girlfriend and I each had a flight and a full pour and enjoyed what we had. As a beer nerd, I appreciate how well organized the menu is: all beers have a detailed description and are presented in order from light to dark. Like many breweries these days, they charge a 3.75% credit card fee, which is disclosed on the menu. Overall a really nice place with some interesting and enjoyable beers. We live in South Jersey so nowhere close, but if we're ever in the area again we would come back.

There was no sign out with the brewery's name, as far as we could see, and no cars. No sign of life anywhere. We finally figured out we had to go around the side of the building where the entrance was. Interesting space. Big open high-ceilinged taproom, brew space in the next room over, bathrooms past the brew space with private rooms and spaces that can be rented for parties, including a tiny room with a pinball machine in it. The beer we had was good, though I'm always wary of a brewery that still has a fest beer and a pumpkin beer on the menu in January. 11 beers on tap with descriptions and tasting notes on the menu, which I always appreciate. Plenty of beers in the to go fridge. Based off their instagram it looks like they do a lot of fun events, but it seems we were there on an off night. Despite it being a Saturday night, there was no live music and no food truck. We were there for an hour and there were only two other people there so it was kind of dead. As far as I can tell this place has the distinction of being New Jersey's northern most brewery. We don't live anywhere close but we would come back if we were in the area again.

Now you can enjoy the best of Muckraker Beermaker and Two Villains Brewing all under one roof, with a wide selection of IPAs, ales, stouts, hard seltzers, and more. We have visited Muckraker before and love that they now have an expanded space with both indoor and outdoor seating that is fully dog friendly for leashed, well-behaved pups. There is an on-site BBQ kitchen, @beardedbabyque, for a bite to eat (or you can bring your own), plus plenty of fun touches like garage doors that open to mountain views, darts, pinball, and of course a friendly staff that makes the experience even better.

My girlfriend and I stopped in on a Friday evening during a weekend trip to High Point State Park. They only had nine beers on tap but there was nice variety and excellent quality in the lineup. Several IPA's and hazy ales but also a grisette, a German pilsner, an English mild and a milk stout. They don't offer flights. Interestingly enough, as much as I enjoy flights at breweries, I've actually found that not offering them is usually a good sign as it is the mark of a brewery that is serious about beer and knows what they are doing. This was true for Autodidact as each beer was excellent. Five star beer but four star taproom. 6 o'clock on a Friday night but only about seven other people there so it was kind of dead. I didn't enjoy the dim, colored lighting or the cold concrete slab bar. We were sitting at the bar and I hated that the only menu available was behind us so we constantly had to turn around to look at what we wanted next. No beers available in the to go fridge but they were able to make us a few crowlers. We live too far away to come back any time soon, but I'm looking forward to tucking into the beers at home sometime soon.
