Saw many gators and, surprisingly to me, cattle wading in the water nearby. It was easy to find, next to a park and launching ramp, and of course the Lone Cabbage restaurant. Started seeing critters right from the deck of the restaurant. The restaurant has restrooms, but the park has large clean restrooms too, just on the other side of the parking lot. The guide was relaxed and knowledgeable. Also saw vultures eating a carcass. No shade on the ride (and hats can blow off) so wear sunscreen. read more

I was recommended to go to this place for airboat and to eat croc bites. I called ahead to be sure my family could ride if we arrived by 4. We arrived early at 330 only to be told they decided to close early (even though I had called an hour before!) no apologies. We saw them driving the boat back when we arrived! Then we were told they closed for food already. Our last day in Florida was wasted since we left the Kennedy space center early, skipped the air museum and decided to come to this place. What a cool experience! I highly recommend it. Having always wanted to experience an airboat ride, I decided to try this one right off State Road 520 (a.k.a. West King Street) between State Road 528 and Interstate 95. It is on the south side of the road. There is a gravel parking lot for about 30 cars. The airboat company is located at the Lone Cabbage fish camp. There is a coupon that you print out a bring with you for $2/person off. No reservation is required for the larger airboats. The cost is about $30/per person for 30 minutes. You enter, pay, fill out a waiver, grab a pair of ear protectors and wait for the boat. I would recommend bringing a jacket as it can get a little chilly with the wind as you are moving across the water. If you wear a ballcap you will be told to turn it back due to the strong winds as you fly across the water. Our guide drove us farther up to the north of the St Johns River to get us some views of alligators. When we got to our destination he stopped the motor and let us drift so we could ask questions and get pictures The alligators have been very hard to find due to all the current boat activity at the time of our visit. The experience was a lot of fun. It is not like a normal boat in that it is moving across the top of the water so turns are very different and fun and there are a good amount of turns. There is plenty of animal life to see from birds to cattle to alligators. This was a great experience that I would recommend if you are in the area and want a fascinating experience. read more

OMGosh! I've always wanted to go for a ride on an airboat! As a relatively-recent Floridian, "seeing" an alligator doesn't really "trip my trigger" - but it did our family (and 7-yo grandson's) - so as we were together and visiting the Space Coast, our son found this gem of an airboat location - Twister Airboat Rides! 30 minutes was the perfect length of time - and our capitan was terrific in pointing out what we were seeing. Yes, we saw alligators! WHO knew they had hider-holes along the banks! But my most favorite part was seeing all sorts of cattle almost blocking the boat channel! WHO knew birds would sit on the backs of the black cattle??! And what could be more beautiful than the clear blue skies, the tall green grasses waving, the head-waters of the St. John's River near Melbourne and Lake Okeechobee with black-backed cattle and the whitest of egrets! Was in the mood for some gator so decided to give this spot a try. Airboat rides are available but we stuck to the food today. We were seated promptly and our drink order taken right away. I ordered the combo which included gator, frog legs, catfish, coleslaw, fries, and hush puppies. Our meals were delivered in a reasonable amount of time. The gator was delicious on its own and strangely went well with cocktail sauce. The catfish was very tasty and went well with tartar sauce. The frog legs were the best tasting and expertly prepared. I dont order them often but these were exceptional. Cole slaw and fries were very good. The hush puppies might be the best I have ever eaten. They were moist on the inside with the perfect crisp on the outside. It also had a sweetness to it but just the perfect amount. I will definately be back for more. read more

Lone Cabbage Fish Camp is a no frills, laid back restaurant right off of Stage Road 520. Stop by to drink a cold one and watch NASCAR or buy a few pounds of gator meat. The food isn't the greatest, but this is where all the locals come to hang out. For my lunch, I had a sampler of fried catfish, gator, and frog legs. I had never tasted gator before and the pieces of catfish looked just like the pieces of gator, so I never knew what I was eating. Whatever I was eating, it was a bit on the dry side. The frog legs, on the other hand, were quite moist and the palest meat I had ever seen. The veins were a blackish purple, contrasting with the pale meat and grossing me out. We have been on a few different air boat rides over the last 5 years but this was by far the best, the captain was rough but authentic. He was very entertaining and informative. He answered all our dumb questions and dispelled many myths about gators. We went with a group of 8 without an appointment and it was about 15 min wait is all. We went late morning and about 73 degrees and clear. We were lucky to see about 30 gators.... all the largest we have seen in the wild. No Frills is right! From the outside, it looks like a place you don't stop...even if you run out of gas. It is always packed with locals from the "back woods" if you know what I mean. This was the first place I ate gator. It was neat to try I guess, but was a little dry and salty. The menu features tons of fish and basic bar food. The weekend is filled with people fishing and dropping their boats in the water. They also have air boat rides you can take. In the hot sun, it feels great. This is a Sunday so there is live music (every Sunday starting at 1:00) with a very good band playing a mix of country & rock. The crowd is a mix of tourists in for the airboat rides, families with small children in search of gators, and motorcycle enthusiasts ( mostly couples ) on day trips from Orlando vicinity. We are here by invitation for a birthday gathering. So I am stepping outside of my box to a new experience. Upon arrival I think how cute this place is to be in the middle of swampland. It is actually a hot June summer day, 97 degrees, as I write this. But there is a breeze/cross wind coming through this open air restaurant. There are also ceiling fans, but yes it is still very hot. A Full bar is available as is table service. The menu offers burgers, fried food, and basic salads. This place delivers exactly what one would expect from a fish camp / airboat dock. We had very nice helpful service. The food is decent and the buckets of beer are reasonable. The birthday boy (77 years old) went for an airboat ride and had a blast. We took this tour last year and loved it. Brought our youngest grandson back to take the same tour this year. We thought we lucked out getting the same captain. But boy were we wrong. I misunderstood where he wanted us to all sit and then the people behind us just sat wherever as well. I asked the captain where he wanted us said sorry and again said just tell me where you want me. He said he had lost control and everyone just sit where they want. While Out on the water he mad 3 separate remarks about people not listening and running the experience for everyone and being unsafe. I was in tears by the time we got back. I wish he had taken control of the boat to begin with. If it was unsafe, don't go out till it IS. I am one of those people that goes by the rules and is called a goody two shoes lol. Believe me, If he had said he needed us to be in a spot we would have made sure to do it. This guy ruined the experience for me. I did not enjoy it because of his rudeness and passive aggressive behavior. The staff inside were nice and I did call back and let them k ow what happened. Dennis said to come back to him next year and he would take care of us. I'm sure he will IF we come back. We may, the previous time we enjoyed. I was going to get some alligator for our grandson to try after the ride, but we left directly after the ride. I understand that it is important to listen to the captain. They want to balance out the boat for safety. So if you go o. This tour, be sure to listen. We saw tons of cows (I didn't know they lived in the swamps!) and 5 or so alligator. The captain was informative and friendly. This is an easy drive from Orlando or the Space Coast. First let me review the airboat ride. Loved it!!!! Our guide was amazing! We saw three gators, lots of cattle, two horses, tons of beautiful birds. The icing on the cake was the bald eagle! I took my 85 year old dad and he loved it! I've been in several rides in the past...this has been my favorite! Wait time was only 5 min! There were 13 on my boat. We flew across the waterway. I'll be back...fun trip not rushed. As for the food...pleasantly surprised! We had shrimp and codfish. Shrimp was med sized, plentiful and tasty! Codfish was very good! I recently returned from a much needed cruise to the Bahamas (courtesy of Royal Caribbean Grandeur of the Seas) & warmer weather than this frigid state I call home. One of our stops was Port Canaveral. I have never been on an air boat & I'm all about a new adventure. I was not disappointed! The company is called Lone Cabbage (I'm sure there's a story behind that) & is located in the rear of a biker bar with the same name.They are very organized & our ride went off without a hitch. The boats are larger than I imagined as well as much louder (the reason for the ear protection provided). Our guide seemed to know his way around & was quite enlightening to wildlife in the swamps. I was expecting lots of annoying bugs but was happily deprived of their company. We saw several 'gators' (nasty looking fellas), birds, & even cows grazing there. Guess they're too big for a gator's meal. Speaking of meals, at the end of the boat trip we were offered some alligator bites in a cocktail sauce. They were EXCELLENT! Sorry guys, you taste great & also make great boots! My only real complaint was I wish the ride had been longer. Oh, & I wish we had time after the excursion to hang a bit longer at the biker bar. Booked through Royal Caribbean as an excursion, this was our fall back option for the Port Canaveral stop, as opposed to staying on the Anthem of the Seas. The tour was delayed half an hour due to road closures from a brush fire, so my expectations were pretty low on what was to come. The airboat ride turned out to be a blast! While not the dismal mangrove swamp I had hoped for, we saw no less than 20 gators of all sizes, ages, shapes and activity levels. Loved the speed and power of the fan and the narrative of the boat pilot. My son and I had a good old time. After the ride, we feasted on gratis gator bites and a reasonably priced ice cold bottled local IPA. There was also a live animal rescue group, The Care Foundation showing some of their rescues and telling the stories behind them. Photo opportunities with a pot belly pig and a hefty boa for a donation were highlights for my son. We found this adventure to be a good way to spend some quality time together. read more

Visited this place after not being in Florida for over 8+ years, and it's still going strong! Lone Cabbage Fish Camp is still my #1 place for fried gator tail. We got rained out of the airboat rides, so we just had dinner on this trip. Service was fantastic. This place is a very casual out-near-the-swamp establishment, and as other reviews have mentioned its a plastic silverware and paper plate type of place. Their specialty is fried foods... and they do it well. We ordered the Alligator dinner and the shrimp platters and the shrimp, gator, and fries were initally too hot to eat!! Love it!! The worst thing is to have a beautiful dinner come out to you luke-warm... I'd much rather burn my mouth (like an idiot) and then calmly wait for it to cool down for the remaining bites. Oh and did I mention that the hush puppies are pure-fried-perfection??? They are my favorite hush puppies to-date. They have a large parking lot for big groups. If you get a chance to ride the airboats, you really should! It is fun for any age, and especially enjoyed by my 82 year old great grandmother years ago. I did not feel like I was in danger's way at all; the guides are highly knowledable and get you just close enough to see these magnificent dinosaur-like creatures as they sun bathe on a log or bank. To tell you the truth I have passed this place many times over the years on drives along S.R. 520. So many times I would say almost countless.. State Road 520 It's a great cut-off from I-95 to the 528 Beeline (BeachLine) or all the way to S.R. 50 East Colonial Drive. Orlando to Cocoa or any other points to South Florida. Way back in the day I'm sure I stopped in for a drink or two but most of the time I am just flying right by on that big 4 lane rd. at 65 to 75mph. Lot of times I have passed by thinking I ought to stop..oh I am in too big a hurry....oh it looks too busy...etc. Well the other early evening after a day of sitting around the pool sunning and boozin'. I found myself with a hankering for seafood. Now ya know when you have a hankering for a particular food you have to really search the database in your head for just the right place. Seafood in Orlando is a funny beast as it is, you would think since most of the state is coast, Orlando would have some good Seafood spots and yes there are those that would have said Red Lobster or Winter Park Fish Co. or Lee and Ricks or Victorio's or Mitchells or etc. etc..... You get the point. I was really looking for that hole in the wall, way out of the way place, that would have seafood and great outdoor atmosphere that was not a chain place. Not really sure why Lone Cabbage popped into the noggin but it did. From that moment I decided to head out of O-Town and give a real old Florida place down on the river in the middle of nowhere a try. From downtown Orlando it's about a 45 minute drive. Now you are gonna read in some of the other reviews it's a Biker Bar, It's a Dive Bar, Local Rednecks Bar, it looks seedy, It's a hidden gem, They only serve Fried Seafood, yadda yadda yadda. They are all right.... it is all of that. Which in my book is GREAT and something different, not the same ol' same ol' If you want a real Florida Cracker experience off the path, hidden gem, along the river full of real Florida fish and wild Gators and Airboat Rides and really GREAT Fried Seafood and Drinks! Do like I did and head out there and have lunch or dinner. Take the motorcycle, take the bike, take the scooter, wear your $4.99 Tractor Supply hat and cowboy boots, swim suit and tank top or the Daytona Bike Week T-shirt you bought at CVS, open the sun roof or convertible top on the car and just GO!!! The evening I was there it was very laid back. It was a mix of travelers, Local types and people from Cocoa and Melbourne. We sat inside for dinner but they have a huge deck that overlooks the river perfect for drinks or dinner and or nature photo's. Also on the outside they have a huge covered area that can feature live music ya know for when the bikers are there! Lots of parking, for trucks, cars, bikes and RV's. Anyway having never eaten there I looked over the menu which included about every local Florida seafood concoction you could think of including a few non fried dishes and decided on the pictured Tilapia Sandwich, which is fried LOL!! I will tell you it was huge, fall apart fresh, and it was very, very good. My overall experience was shock!! I cannot believe I have passed this place so many times over the years that from here on out, It's in the rotation for good fried seafood, it's in the padded my drive time to include a stop, it's a my guest from out of town want a "REAL" Florida experience go to place. I will say from my drinks, appetizer, to my sandwich one of the best Hole in The Wall dinners I have ever had. Service was that mix of local, surly , good with the repartee kind of server! It was a rainy, hailing cold March day in Northern California. I got on a plane and flew to warm sunny Florida. I had been to Florida a few times before but the disparity in the weather had never been so enormous. We went to the Loan Cabbage and had an eye opening Central Florida experience. There were Alligators across a small irrigation ditch which was not very far from where we parked our car; no one else seemed to mind this but me. This place is known for good catfish, all things fried, drinks and a good place to hear live music and last but not least....Airboat rides. The food was fried, fried and fried. I had a sample plate of fried catfish, frogs legs and alligator tail and don't leave out the fried hush puppies. I am not a fan of seafood but the catfish was delicious, the frogs legs tasted like the murky bottom of a dirty moldy river with rotten fish. Alligator had no taste but the consistency of a firm sponge. The beer was cold and a steady stream of it. Live music, lots of people hanging out enjoying the food, music and the sunshine. 24 hours prior I was boarding a plane wearing flip flops, shorts and a short sleeve shirt in a hailstorm. Now full, warm and had a sunburn that I could boast about. We went down the pier and boarded a huge Airboat. We were taken out on the St. Johns River and off the beaten path to see some strange sights!! A marshy wetland with cows standing in the middle of nowhere. Muddy spots with gigantic alligators looking lazy. Every kind of bird you could imagine or new ones to add to your list of wonders. The driver or captain, not sure what to call the guy; he edged up to a couple of large alligators and some of us were imagining our fate. This is FUN!! I think that anyone who wants a little taste of old Central Florida needs to stop in at the Lone Cabbage for an afternoon of fun & good ol boy food!. Yes, they have airboat rides, which we've been on several times, depending on the captain that you get and what kind of weather there has been, you can have a good time or a great time! Cruising around the St John's bends at speeds that seem much higher than they really are gives you the feeling of being a dirt track racer in racing mode. You see gators, birds, even wild cows..all kinds of stuff! Unfortunately, what you see is the luck of the draw, they can't plan it all out like Disney World! Lunch at Lone Cabbage is always a trip for visitors, as previously mentioned by other reviewers, gator, frogs legs, etc as well as some semi-normal foods. The bar is usually full of colorful locals and depending on when you go, there could be a meeting of Hot Rodders, Bikers, etc. Always fun to look at the parking lot here on weekends. Whenever we have visitors who have never been to the area, this is one of the places that we take 'em to! As previously mentioned, it is the type of place that a lot of folks would overlook. Tons of atmosphere. After a week on a Carnival cruise ship it was great to finally find a place that offered a more "genuine" type of experience. No hoity-toity waiters putting your napkin in your lap, or phony/ fabricated "excursions". Just greasy food, gators, and tons of vibe. Our fan boat driver spoke in that fabulous tone and story-telling language so stronly associated with the south. We saw a bunch of gators, including teensy baby gators, big ol' mean lookin' gators, and a mama hunkered way back in her den. When we got back we ate fried gator, frog legs, and catfish. Our waitress referred to us as "all-y'all". There was a great live country band cookin' up some good tunes, and tons o' bikers. They have every type of yellow beer you can imagine. I was... unimpressed. There are many opportunities to have a signature fried critter or southern food, it was all lack luster and bleh. The Airboat ride was pretty cool, the pilot seemed to have a passion for wildlife, with almost tribal tales of the animals and traditional stories, of animals he has encountered. I was a little overwhelmed by the preponderance of biker culture. I almost didn't go, I did have my parents from Northern California with me, and I didn't want them to be frightened by the roughness. Good place off the beaten track. Of course everything here is fried. And when I go to a dive type bar I expect that. Very much a local hangout with bikes everywhere on the weekends. To the hipster that was afraid of exposing her parents to the biker culture, GET over it and go back to eating tasteless vegan crap. Yes there are a lot of bikes on the weekend but the combined income of most of these people would surprise you. Haven't done the air-boat ride yet but I am planning on taking my grand-kids the next time they are in town.
