Historic Gays, IL and the two story outhouse!
    Matt U.

Always a momentous occasion when we drive by the Two Story Outhouse in the metropolous of Gays, IL. This town fo 300 boasts one of the most bizarre, yet strangely facinating stops that reminds you both of yeste ryear as well as the "what's grosser than gross?" jokes that made the 80's a decade you'd like to forget. It's located about 15 miles outside of Mattoon, or about 20 minutes from the interstate. The outhouse was built in 1872 and was attached to the general store of the town. The signage out front of the outhouse reports that two story outhouses were common place in the 1800's and early 1900's - it's nice to live today! There are a number of articles from all over the USA that have been written about this spot and all will gThey pay tribute to a number of soldiers from the area in this small park as well and despite being next to an outhouse, it's done very respectfully. The photo ops here are truly priceless and remind you that things aren't so bad these days. The town also boast a large water tower bearing the town name and, in the past, had an old bike that sat atop a light pole that was riddled to have belonged to hitler (seriously, a sign read "Hitler's bike"). This however has since gone missing. This stop provides a rare and unusual glimpse into the past and something that you're not likely to see again and certainly won't regret having a picture of! Worth the trip every time you drive near it. Great site for more info - http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/2527

After reading all about the history of the supposed World's Only Two Story Outhouse (built in 1872!) I took is piss in it.

On the the big ones in the downtown core is this, the World's Largest Wind Chime. It is accessed through the patio area of what looks like a cute restaurant, Whitling Whimsy Cafe, which was closed on Sunday when I was here. In fact, most of the town was closed on Sunday. Still, the Things are accessible. The Wind Chime is certified by the Guinness Book of World Records and are 49 feet tall with the largest chime being 42 feet long. There is a center rope pull so that you can make the chimes sound if it's not a windy day. I like that this one is interactive. [Review 19676 overall - 131 in Illinois - 648 of 2023.]

Travelers along the highway admired that old tree, adorned with mugs. It offered a silent respite in our daily lives. It offered hope, that no matter what pains we carried, there was the Mug Tree. The Mug Tree, which was created out of the generosity of hundreds of people, most likely strangers to each other, but friends with a common goal of taking an old, dead tree along a country highway and giving it purpose, once more. The Mug Tree. A local landmark, never to be recognized as a national monument. Unlike the more famous curiosities just a few miles north in Casey, this oddity stood outside of the door to fame. Yet, to those of us who passed by, it stood for years alongside that country highway, day and night. Like an old trusted friend. So, to those who read these words and never knew the Mug Tree, I am sorry for your loss. And to those thousands of travelers that passed by and noticed, if you grieve, you grieve not alone. Dear Mug Tree: So long, my friend. Thanks for all the smiles you brought to our hearts.
