This time, I had some extra time on my hands and decided to do a deeper dive into Twigs at FAI. Of course I ended up focusing on the nice stuff under the "lock and key" displays, some of it running into several hundred dollars. I happily ended up with a more modestly priced walrus ivory Billiken (a mythical good-luck figure who represents "things as they ought to be."). This is a favorite carving figure in Alaska, even though the original idea came from a Missouri art teacher. This time, the gift was for me. The good folks at Twigs wrapped it up nicely for the journey home.

I took a good amount of time looking at every corner, because there is a lot of cute stuff. Sandra herself is super nice and helpful! It was my first day in Fairbanks, and I just hopped in to look at all the rings (constant search for spoon rings). She helped me out by letting me know about the area and all the interesting places to shop/eat, as well as good places to view the lights. She even drew me some directions and printed out locations of GPS coordinates! On top of that, I got a lot of cool Alaskan gifts and badass ring (that actually fits my tiny fingers!). The Spinning Room is like a splendid Easter egg hidden away in a nest of a building. It is located downtown, in the building adjacent to Big Rays, with a simple street sign denoting its upstairs presence. Walk into the seemingly formidable building, and either take the stairs or elevator to the third floor, whereby you will find signs directing you to the shop. The Spinning Room offers a great selection of beads, books and other spinning/beading material. I found an awesome blue-green glass bead that was handmade and available to only a few shops nationwide. I was stoked that it was available in Fairbanks, AK! Marnie, the owner, is very pleasant, helpful, and extremely knowledgeable about diverse beading patterns. One evening, I arrived late and accidentally stayed until 6:10pm (shop closes at 6pm). Marnie never mentioned the time, and was completely sweet and helpful, even offering more time to show us the differences between various stitches, including peyote stitch. In addition to selling beads, the Spinning Room offers beading and spinning classes! A must-visit shop for bead and craft lovers!
