Wedding prep can get stressful, and learning the dance and going to class was a stress reliever and a ton of fun. I have never done ballroom dancing before (my now wife had a long time ago ), but Anjulena was a fantastic teacher and could teach us and get us performance ready for the wedding! She choreographed the dance for us based on what we wanted, and it felt awesome to have someone who could make this dance into something we wanted. We told her what we wanted as the dance developed, and she could add in moves and make modifications to meet our needs. She is also super kind and even came to our wedding rehearsal to help us practice our dance and to make sure we were oriented correctly and comfortable to do our dance at the venue (for both plan A and the rain plan). Overall, I highly recommend working with Anjulena. If you have a first dance for a wedding, she's your person. She helped us create a memorable moment we will cherish forever (I have watched a recording of our dance a friend got for us so many times already!) and a dance that wowed our guests (everyone said it was the best first dance they have seen!). Johnathan starts counting... As he breaks down the steps, he counts. 1...2... 3... 5...6... 7... 1...2... 3... and 5...6... 7... The music fades into the background; my concentration narrows in as I listen to the instructor count off, demonstrate steps, and try to follow his example. The foot steps following the salsa patterns form their own beat, as the class moves in unison. Since, I am taking classes with my group, Social Spanish; we received 50% off the normal student price. If you can get a group of friends to take the class with you; you can save a bundle off the normal price. If not, you can get a week long trial for free, if you swing by their location and pick up a business card. ;o) It's a nice way to get started into the genre that strikes your fancy. Friday nights, I spend 60 minutes of my evening in the company of Spanish speakers, as we learn salsa 101. The new faces have become familiar faces. We greet one another and chat about our day, and before I know it, it is time to start class. So far I am pretty pleased with what I've learned, and I am looking forward to future steps I'll learn. Today, I sort out my work schedule for the next few months, so I called Jonathan and told him that I would like to sign up for the Early Bird 48 hours lessons for a price of $1,680. We enjoyed it SO MUCH that we actually did another 2 months of group classes (Pre-Intermediate) and then did 3 private lessons with Demetra for our first dance! The group lessons were a lot of fun and non-threatening. Gloria made it very easy by showing you a basic move and having the whole class repeat the same move multiple times. Over the weeks, she will add more steps to the one you learned the previous week. We rarely practiced when we got home, but when we went back the following week and did a refresher at the beginning of the class.. it was like riding a bike! It really is a great value- $50 for 4 classes a month and you get to learn all sorts of styles of ballroom dancing (waltz, foxtrot, tango, cha cha, rumba, and jitterbug). I also liked that the classes were in the evening (7 or 8pm depending on your skill set) which made it easy since traffic is mostly gone by then. They also have a large parking lot so no need to worry about parking. For our private lessons, we had Demetra and she was such a sweetheart! We gave her our first dance selection prior to meeting and when we had our first lesson, she already had the styles (cha cha and jitterbug) chosen and taught us the essentials like the dance entrance and dip at the end. She was very patient with us and would show us steps multiple times until we were comfortable with it. She also taught us exercises to do at home that helped us with hip movements for the cha cha. We learned so much from her and we had so many compliments on our first dance and how great we looked. She truly made our big day extra special!

I looked at classes, but realized until I can get out of my own head and loosen up the classes would never happen. I found Uliana on Yelp and decided to try my hand, or foot so to speak, at individual instruction. She is very accommodating and we corresponded a few times until I could get my schedule lined up. We immediately started on some latin dances, cha cha and salsa, and have remained so over the last month of lessons. I have taken two a week. She is very patient with me as I learn to move my feet. I am sure it does not help that I have not gone out in public, but that is not her fault. I believe a couple more lessons may get me over that hump. I would highly recommend her if you want individual instruction. I am so glad I did and thank her for so much help.

People sit and watch, or dance around you. Great challenge except if your a nervous bug like me. Also, since it is one room, there is one radio. People are constantly fighting over it and it fustruating. It is my largest complaint. The radio, the one room. Look I want to learn how to dance to this, we got the steps now lets dance to it You get maybe 10seconds in before someone comes and jumps on the radio and changes it to what ever they please. I went to this school for their monthly salsa social in August. I can truly say I had a really good…read moretime! I didn't even know anyone! Well, Eva L and my friend Jay went with me, so I guess I knew THEM. (lol) The school is located on Weslayan in the River Oaks area. It is easy to miss as you have to walk into the building to see it. The only way I can remember to get there is to look for the Walgreens and it is next to it. It costs $10 for the social and that includes water and some snacks! I was pretty happy about that. I prefer to pay a little more and not have to bother buying water. The music was OK, a little too main stream for me, but still good enough to have a good time. I danced with a lot of people I didn't know. I definitely danced with at least 20 people and they were at all levels of dancing! I really loved that they were all really nice and welcoming. Yes, I will go to this social again!! See you on the dance floor!

Apparently I was good enough that I was asked by her and a few others to audition for the troupe which performs internationally. After leaving NYC, I found no adequate bellydance teacher in SF nor Hawaii, until I got here to HTX. Debbie was recommended to me by a student in one of my fitness classes where I had incorporated some bellydance moves. Studying w Debbie: Debbie hands down beats all my study in NYC. (Although her style w eyes and directing viewer attention is quite a bit different. Much more playful.) She'll push you in dance techniques if she sees you're up for it. I am always definitely up for it, and pushing expectations of physical abilities and boundaries. However skilled I was before, she tripled my abilities/accuracy/muscle isolation skills. I did notice she'll pace for students who aren't so physically or mentally inclined (without sacrificing the learning curve of more ambitious/skilled students) --so no need for newbies to be intimidated to attend a class w her. She's very warm, friendly, patient, and a gifted dance teacher. Also, she is always vivacious, and full of stories in and out of class, and within the troupe. I had to quit the troupe bc I'm not a late night person (performances tend to be 9pm or much later), and I got seriously injured from a car accident. I am still hoping to return to the classes bc Debbie is an amazing teacher. Zills: She makes it considerably less intimidating, and you simultaneously play w movement and pace. Veil: Very fun. She tends towards a coquettish to sexy style. I think she has a background in burlesque.
