Ty's is a low-key, low-maintenance, low-attitude bar with men that are handsome but not so pretty that you can't talk to them. The clientele consists of men that are usually 30+ with average builds of the bearish variety. This is a good place to either start your evening, end your day, meet with friends, and good for tourists. Random conversations can be started somewhat easily with the man/men next to you. Ty's is a fun bar to visit once in awhile. As an early 30 something, visiting Ty's makes me feel like a delicious piece of baby back ribs about to be gummed to death in a Miami Retirement Center, so it is quite flattering. I do like the sense of generic warmth and low-grade sleaziness so I keep going back once in awhile. But for me, Ty's is really awesome on a Friday night because it doesn't charge cover, isn't mobbed by lesbians*, Bridge and Tunnelers, and NYU Students**, and has super cheap drinks. Also the bartenders are complete sweet hearts. On the down side, the place isn't that clean, it's just a single room with not that much to look at, and it can feel a bit cruisy. Five years ago my husband and I have had to begin traveling to NYC twice a year for a week each trip. Since my husband, Rick, is traveling part of the week for business and the remainder of the week for leisure, I have a few days and evenings that I can wander the city alone. Five years ago I wandered into Ty 's for an early mid afternoon cocktail (or two or three) and was greeted by Ron who immediately made me feel at home. I've been returning to Ty's most every day of every one of our NYC visits since. Rick and I both really enjoy it here. Friendly patrons and super sweet bartenders make Ty's my home away from home and is often the starting and ending point for our cocktail time. All of the other bartenders have also been as fantastic and welcoming as Ron. Hubby thinks that Ron should apologize to every staff member for allowing my mouth to enter the bar that first time! This has a very low-key neighborhood feel to it - there always appears to be friendly folks around and the bartenders seem nice enough. They do have flat screen TVs above the bar that proved to be a little distracting - the last time I was there, one screen had perfectly tanned men with six pack abs rubbing themselves silly on beaches, in showers and by pool side - the other screen had an episode of Supernanny on, which featured a single mom being abused by her children. Perhaps the most expensive two Stellas I've ever bought but the bartenders were cute-ish and friendly. Went in because Hanger's across the street was TOO crowded and I wanted to sit and drink. Even though I went on a PACKED night, I really wasn't wowed by Ty's. It seemed way too small, the bar area was WAY packed so it took me forever to order a drink (plus there was only ONE bartender! What the hell?) Can't complain too much.. the crowd was really attractive and I think I even got my ass grabbed a couple of times in there when I went through the crowd lol Ty's.. eh, so so. April 17th 2010. I came to the bar after the Furball with 3 other friends. We didnt drink at the ball but planned to at this bar. I had $900.00 in cash in my pocket and after an hour and a half spent $100 dollars in drinks and was then told by the doorman to buy another round or leave. When we protested having just bought drinks 20 minutes prior to his approach, He again insisted our buying another round immediately or be ejected from the bar. We were upset being the only group of 4 (black guys) asked to buy or leave. Ty's was not kewl to bears of color on that night. the great night was ruined by Ty's!! Last week I stopped at Ty's with a dear Lesbian friend of mine, suddenly while we are talking quietly in a corner an old & creepy guy come asking why she was there. I said she is my friend and is with me, he says AH OK I don't like woman taking over this place (thing I honestly don't understand much what she can take or anybody would like to take from him) Not even mention how my friend felt. This Sunday, I stop by with a gay friend and two girls (one the same Lesbian friend); they were travelling back to their country in an hour and we decided to have a farewell beer. At the door, the bouncer doesn't let me in, I ask why, he says come back later I can not tell you, I can not let you in. I ask why we can not go in again.. he repeats come back later I can not let you in and pushes me from the door out of the bar. not giving us any explanation. I was total embarrassed for me to take dear friends to a place and being discriminated at the door, and my friend thought it was because of her, a completely unfair and shitty situation. (my friends are grown up serious professionals and not screaming bimbos just to clarify) this is a bar where I had been leaving money for 15 years now every week. my only assumption is That we were with two woman. If that is the case you must tell me woman are not allowed clearly, have a clear not woman allowed policy about it and afford the consequences of the bar discriminatory policy. As for us we went and spent money in a friendlier bar in the corner and had a great time. what is in the future; very simple, many nights having a drink with friends but "Not in Ty's" the money I used to sped there will be spent somewhere else. I will never step again that place not anyone I know if I can avoid it; I will not let any friend at least when we are in the village with me to stop in that place ever again. it's 2015 and I don't support discrimination specially coming from a gay bar towards gay people. Stopped here while bar hopping on a recent trip to the city. Never sure about walking into a gay bar as a woman because you never know the reception you'll get. As soon as we walked in the door the bouncer stated "come in, all are welcome" which was all that we needed to hear. Bar was very nice--a 40 something crowd mostly and the music was good. I decided to visit this bar one night a few weekends ago. While it is small, it is by and large quite a warm and friendly bar. The night I was there, they music was fabulous mainly 1980's Billboard Hot 100 hits before shifting into more recent dance hits, most of which I enjoyed! The cocktails were mixed well and economically priced. The restroom was clean and well lit. As for the clientele, it is a good place to be if you are a man who desires interracial connections. This was one of three gay bars I managed to visit during a short stay in New York City (the others being Stonewall and Suite), and it was by far my favorite. What set Ty's apart from the other bars was its complete lack of formulaic and mindnumbingly stupid music, which the other two bars had in spades. They played excellent music (notable names during our brief visit were Cut Copy and LCD Soundsystem), the crowd seemed friendly enough, and the guys there were mostly bearish and many were quite cute. I really liked this bar. It's definitely NOT a dance club with metros and women and cute gay boys all dolled up and done up nice. It's a local Man's bar with Men. With facial hair. Lots of Older (30's, 40's, 50's, older?) Men. The drinks aren't too expensive, but I don't really remember, I got so drunk. I got hit on, too, by some clean shaven, Justin Timberlake-Hat-wearing Jersey sketch drunk who was probably on some sort of ridiculous drugs and wouldn't stop hitting on me even though I was checking out the 6'1" 250 lb grey bearded handsome gent standing across the bar from my hot friend, Peter.(who has white hair and a mustache) I'd definitely come back here - just wish it was a little bit bigger. First time going here was on a Friday. It's an okay bar, located towards the end of Christopher St. Crowd is mostly older men and some young otters here and there. Drinks were good, the bartender served me an Appletini in these funky looking glasses that curved and looked like something out of a 3D printer! Very clean, which is a plus. read more

Been going to this place on/off for many years, but something has definitely changed recently. They seem understaffed, and the staff doesn't seem able to keep an eye on the "drunks" that claim the tables (there are only 2) as their personal property. It's disappointing, that you can get harassed inside a bar, where all you might want to do is have a drink, and maybe find 6 square inches for your drink. read more

I went early evening and it was a couple years ago. I was visiting NYC by myself and on the secon day my dog died. I was pretty depressed but went in, sat at the bar and ordered a drink. I got to talking with the bartender who was extremely nice. When I spoke of my dogs passing, he and all the patrons raised a glass to toast. An all in all friendly bar. I came here Pride weekend and the place was packed. Too packed. The bar is small and there was no place to move. There was barely enough room to get my drink to my lips. Still the best bar on a dwindling yuppified strip. Always a comfortable place to hang no matter what you shape, size or age. Great bartenders and doormen. For 12 years off and on I have tried to like this place. It's my kind of place--a dive bar with character, unpretentious, familiar as a beer and shot bar in anywhereville,usa and alas it resoundingly falls short. Its insular crowd is avoidant of the newbies; its smallness is matched by the smallness of its insularity. In short it is the most unwelcoming of "gay cheers" bars I have ever visited. Walk down to SB or whatever boots n saddle call themselves these days and it is smaller physically but far more open. The bartender (exceptionally polite african american) is welcoming. Popcorn it! Diversity abounds, Not true at Ty's. I remember first in NYC when confessing my sexual preferences recommended Ty's--after visiting there 12 years ago and to this day i say por que? No one really wants to talk to you unless ur part of in crowd. So many places acroos the street up the street down the street on Christopher will be more welcoming. I shall continue to visit just to see if the crowd ever changes. After 12 years it's still the same place like in PA at a Legion hall a guy would heil hitler me every time i took a swig. So if u like smallness, parochial minds, unwelcoming spirits and narrowness as a virture go to Ty's so the rest of Christopher and beyond is free of such germs. read more

I will never ever step foot in this establishment again. I wouldn't even use their restroom. We went there at 2:05 and the door was locked. The bartender let my friend in to relieve himself and the doorman said as he was leaving... "The website says it is from 2011". I asked why they close at 2 if the website says 4 and the bartender says he can't do anything about it. After 13 years of customer service in NYC I shared that they may want to edit the website to encourage more people to come to the bar. The bartender shared that the management won't listen to him and I shouldn't tell him that. I should yelp it. "You look like someone who would." I told him that he just needs to share my message and he refused to hear a thing I said. I will never step foot in this bar if my own wedding was supposed to be there. Do not support a business that allows employees to be this unsupported and uneducated to understand that they have a say with their managers and owners. read more
