What we could not have known then was how profoundly that meeting would shape the next four years of our lives. As a parent, you spend a lot of time hoping your child will encounter mentors who help bring out the best in them. Sensei Pete has been exactly that person for my son. From the beginning, there was something special about the way he taught. He led with patience, consistency, and genuine care. He has a remarkable ability to connect with children, earning their respect while making them feel supported, valued, and capable. My son looked forward to every class, not simply because he enjoyed karate, but because he felt seen and encouraged. Over the past four years, I have watched my son transform. He has gained confidence, discipline, focus, resilience, and self-respect. When challenges seemed difficult, Sensei Pete taught him to keep trying. When he doubted himself, Sensei Pete helped him believe in his own abilities. The lessons learned at Budokai have extended far beyond the dojo and have become part of who my son is becoming as a young person. What has always stood out to me, however, is that Sensei Pete sees his students as more than karate students. He sees them as children with families, responsibilities, challenges, and lives outside the dojo. Throughout the years, our family has experienced illnesses, scheduling conflicts, family obligations, and the countless unexpected situations that arise when raising a child. Every single time, Sensei Pete responded with understanding, compassion, and flexibility. He never made us feel like just another family on a roster. He worked with us, respected our circumstances, and consistently demonstrated that relationships matter more than rigid rules. In a world where so many youth activities can feel transactional, Sensei Pete has built something different. He has created a community rooted in respect, character, accountability, and kindness. The culture at Budokai reflects his values, and it is evident in every interaction. Four years later, what began as a karate class has become a meaningful relationship built on trust, respect, and gratitude. Sensei Pete has been far more than an instructor; he has been a mentor during some of the most important years of my son's childhood. The positive influence he has had on my son cannot be measured by belts earned or techniques mastered. It can be seen in the confidence with which he carries himself, the respect he shows others, and the perseverance he demonstrates when faced with challenges. For that, I will always be grateful. Budokai Karate has given my son much more than martial arts training--it has given him a mentor, a community, and lessons that will stay with him for life.
