This week, I grabbed a quick slice of pizza from the UAB North Pavilion Cafeteria, a spot that can feel pretty hectic during busy hours. The food court has several stations, including a salad bar, meat-and-three, sandwiches, and of course, the pizza bar. Everything looked clean and organized, even the salad bar, which can sometimes get messy after a lunch rush. There were four or five cashiers working, so the line moved quickly, and they accept both cash and major credit cards. Their most recent inspection in November 2025 gave them a score of 90. The only issues noted were that the cheese on the salad bar and the pre-made sandwiches were slightly out of safe temperature range. One suggestion would be to add a dessert bar for a sweet treat fix. Overall, it was a smooth experience and a great option if you want a fast, satisfying bite while you're at the hospital. read more

I tried the World of Flavors staton at the hospital cafeteria for the first time and today they had an asian stir fry with chicken. The food was ready to serve when I got there and the staff was friendly. Unfortunately, it has been 7 hours since I had it for lunch and my stomach I still complaining about it. It was a greasy affair with overcooked vegetables, dried out noodles, a spring roll dripping with fat and some ground chicken covered in a sugary sauce with sesame seeds. UAB Oncology Services-Poor care. FRI- Newly diagnosed Multiple Myeloma patient @ Infirmary Hospital Mobile, AL traveled 250 miles at instruction of Melissa Garrett, UAB Nurse Navigator. Got 2 units of blood in Mobile then transport by family. Told to go to UAB ER for admit~ that Dr. Aditi Saha had accepted him. Patient due for AM labs, 24 hr UA, in Mobile. He sat in crowded UAB ER 6 hrs. Staff in ER advised they had no record of him or admission. ED staff advised this sort of confusion happens "all the time" w/UAB oncology patients. Some staff advised seek treatment else where. Patient left and now in a hotel attached to hospital costing family $200 day excluding food w/no medical observation or care. Patient now has no way to obtain any labs ordered in Mobile or any blood transfusions. Appt scheduled w/Luciano Costa, MD, PhD MON. I ate at the UAB Hospital cafeteria recently and overall it was a better experience than I expected for an institutional food setting. The cafeteria has a wide variety of options, which is nice whether you are there all day for work, class, or visiting someone in the hospital. There were multiple stations including hot meals, grill items, salad options, and grab and go choices, which made it easy to find something that fit what I was in the mood for. I ordered a hot plate with a protein, vegetables, and a side, and the food tasted fresh and well prepared. The portion size was reasonable and filling without being overwhelming. The cafeteria itself was clean and well organized, especially considering how busy the hospital can be. The atmosphere felt calm for the most part, though it did get a little loud during peak lunch hours. Service was efficient and staff moved the line quickly, which I appreciated since many people are on tight schedules. While it is still cafeteria food, the quality and variety make it a reliable option. I would definitely eat here again if I am on campus or at the hospital for an extended period of time. read more

As far as a hospital goes medically it is rated very high but as dealing with patient treatment they are among the worst ever. The department that deals with the patients after giving birth with a premature baby are ran by incompetent misinformed hacks. They have done nothing resembling help and have caused me and my partner kngoin trouble. I can not recommend anyone use this hospital that have these kind of people in charge of things that can affect your life so negatively. I am really considering a lawsuit against certain departments. Terrible hospital for patient relations. But if you want to be a guinea pig and like being treated second class and looked down on as a human then go right ahead and go for it. I recently ate at UAB Hospital cafeteria and tried a burger from the grill. I dined in, and it was pretty busy. There were long lines, especially at the registers, with only two lines open, which made checkout take longer than i hoped it would. Because of how crowded it was, it did take a few minutes to get my food, but considering the amount of people they were serving, it was understandable. The workers were clearly trying their best to try to stay on top of it and doing their best to keep things moving. The grill staff stayed organized, communicated well with each other. Even with the wait, the service felt efficient and professional. The cafeteria itself was spacious and clean, besides the setting giving off hospital, it was comfortable. The burger was made to order and came out hot. The patty was well-cooked and flavorful, the bun held together well, and the toppings were fresh and simple. The fries were hot and crispy. One noticeable downside is the price. The UAB Hospital cafeteria used to be very affordable, especially for students and hospital staff who eat there regularly. Recently, prices have gone up, and for hospital cafeteria style food, it now feels expensive for what you're getting. Overall, it's convenient and dependable with hardworking staff, but the longer lines and higher prices definitely affect the experience. read more

If you can, please go to the other area hospitals. This hospital is under staffed receiving too many patients especially in their ER unit. There is no separation from visitors who are waiting for updates from loved ones brought into the unit from the sick waiting admissions. Staff has lost compassion and empathy in treating patients. You wait hours for tests and patients are asked the same questions multiple times by the same staff as well as paperwork being lost. This hospital although part of the university Medical school is a working disaster and the fact it has now become the community hospital is even worse. I was an out of state visitor and a relative needed ER care, the EMT said they would bring their family there, I guess they can't stand them. Use another area hospital. read more

My MD and RN went out of their way to give me a cancelled appt for surgery. I was absolutely over the moon with gratitude. Then came the preo-op visit. A woman brought me in to the exam room. Handed a sheet and told me to get undressed. I got on to the table, covered up and here comes the doctor. Followed by several other women and an RN (?). I don't know who those women were but they would not shut up. Loud and obnoxious. They seemed uninterested it in what was happening. What was worse, the doctor seemed enamored with them. I'm thinking: is this a medical clinic or a bar? Anyway, I got a quick speculum treatment all the while trying to tell the Dr that, yesterday, I was dx'd with unexplained hearing loss rt ear and am having an MRI to look for brain tumor. Those women were so loud I had to shout over their talking hoping the Dr. would hear me. Then the doctor left the room. I'm left wondering why the heck did my husband spend 2 hours driving me down here for a non-exam? Then came the pre-op instructions for surgery. The RN took me to an office and I imagined the Dr. went off to fraternize with the women. We sat down and RN spoke so fast and softly I did not hear a word she said. By the time I got back to my vehicle I'm reconsidering the surgery. I talked to my husband about it and decided to sleep on it. I felt the same in the morning and made the phone call and cancelled it. Nobody asked why. I'm imagining they already knew. Bottom line, I feel like I've wasted lots of time and energy on having my medical problem treated at UAB. And I'm left with a post op complication that is very difficult to live with. I wish with all my heart I had taken a plane back to California to see the doctor whom I started out with before moving here. And I recommend you do the same. Recommendations: 1) When greeting patients introduce yourself. It doesn't matter who you are. Wear a visible name tag. And LISTEN to your patients. That means everybody shuts their mouths and listens. 2) limit the amount of people in the room. There was a need for only 2 people in my exam room. Dr and one chaperone. When you are lying on a table butt naked with a thin sheet nobody wants a room fulling of cackling women whom have not be introduced. 3). Encourage your staff to save their flirting and back slapping for after hours. read more

I am writing this to save another person / family from having to experience the utter lack of empathy or care from a medical institution, and would give ZERO stars if possible. This hospital has gone done the toilet in recent years in terms of patient care, facilities management, and a medical staff with an once of decorum about them. My daughter has had to fight at every turn to get BASIC quality care (clean room, infection management, after-surgery care and maintenance, etc.) from her father's cancer treatment team. They have mismanaged his care from initial triage, to surgery (to another debilitating surgery to FIX what they did incorrectly the first time), to having to fight to get him discharged in time to be able to obtain critical meds needed before a pharmacy closed. Add insult to injury, security became threatening upon a recent discharge when trying to get his belongings and wheelchair loaded up after waiting more than 2 hours for discharge paperwork. Save your health and wellbeing. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. Anywhere else. read more

In the North Pavilion at UAB hospital, there are several food options. They offer burgers and chicken fingers from a grille and then southern cooking from another stall. The other two places were not operating when I went. They also offer fresh fruits and ready to go salads. There are a few dessert options as well. I was able to try the chicken fingers and fries from the grille, which came unseasoned. This is probably due to it being "hospital food". I was there at lunch, so there were a lot of workers there on their break. There were also what looked like several family members there to grab food. I did have to wait in a short line to grab my food, but it moved as fast as possible. I then moved in the cafeteria style check out line to pay for my food. The cost was low compared to other restaurants. They gave me 4 chicken fingers and plenty of fries for about 7 dollars. The food was what is usually expected from a cafeteria, but overall pretty good. read more

We liked our stay at UAB, as much as one can 'like' a stay as a hospital. The nurses and doctors are great - they answered all our questions and made sure my wife and newborn child were well taken care of, which was the most important thing. I could have done without a few minor things, like having to get buzzed in each time I left the ward and having to scan back in, but I get why the procedures are in place, and the parking was a little expensive. There is a food court located nearby as well, so if you don't want room service, that's another option for getting some grub. Overall, my wife and child were well taken care of, and that's the most important thing. I know UAB has doctors that are knowledgeable and who want their patients to be happy and safe, and that's why we'll come back here for the next child! read more

This week I ate again at the Bistro Grill at the cafeteria in North Pavillion of UAB Hospital. I arrived at around 11 which is a common lunch time for a lot of people at the hospital so the cafeteria was full of people and the staff were very busy. I ordered a chilli cheese dog and fries from the grill and waited no longer than fifteen minutes for my food. The hot dog and fries were not the best I had ever had, however, the pipping hot chili on top definitely made up for it. Overall, I had a pleasant experience, my food was ok and the service was excellent as always. read more

I just got out of this hell-hole called a hospital. I was taken by ambulance to the ER from my home. I was diagnosed with pneumonia and a urinary tract infection. This hospital is lacking in every department. Less than poor nursing care. You could call for a nurse and they may not arrive at your room for hours. Could barely get anything to drink. I had to get a nurse supervisor called in to remove a nurse who had been so inefficient she left me in pain and would not get my pain medication. I had nurses who laughed when I was in severe pain. Pneumonia is very painful when you try to breathe deeply. They let me sit in bowel movements for hours. Left me filthy. My grandson stayed with me so he can attest to their lack of attention to patient's needs. My own daughter had to clean fecal matter off me because no nurse would come. This place should be shut down. I finally got some attention, but by then it was at dismissal time. That didn't help. They apologized, but the damage was done! I am an elderly retired teacher. I know how professional nurses should behave. This was monstrous!!! read more

Our wait was approximately an hour. Received caring treatment immediately. In 24 hours my husband was there, all test that needed done had been performed perfectly. He was indeed sick. They gave him IVs that brought him back to normalcy and made sure nothing else was wrong. In the past , I had been sent to UAB from Shands for testing. They found everything in 2 hours. Let me repeat that ,Shands sent me to UAB"! I trust them very ,very much. read more

This was the worst hospital and care I have ever seen. My husband came in on a backboard and neck brace. They ordered a CT scan upon getting there. It took three hours for results. Then they ordered and MRI. Two more hours for results. Then they ordered an X-Ray... still waiting three hours after that for results. Like what?! Backwards healthcare if you can call it care. They left him there without any nurse to even ask how he was doing or feeling for 10 hours. Oh we are still here and counting. This place is a mess too. The whole area is max capacity and disgusting. Medicine has no key control and has been dropped on the ground. People are not cleaning pic lines before adding meds. Cords and wires are running in an unsafe manner all over. There is just stuff everywhere in here it's a hazard. Worst hospital ever... just breeding other garbage healthcare workers. read more

If you go in for simple procedure and come out with sciatica, paralysis and chronic denervation, lesions on your spinal cord, losing your peripheral vision, incontinence, drop foot and now torn ligaments from the drop foot, and a spot on your pupil and eyelid that could've been caused from the fluoroscopy machine and more, and the doctor tells you to let them do test and fix it, well they did test for almost 2 years, so you can't find a lawyer because of statutory limitations, Go ahead and look for a lawyer, don't wait cause I had to file a lawsuit myself still waiting on a lawyer because waiting too long it's hard to get a lawyer and you can see here they tried to cover it up, because they messed all the paper work up, I had a cervical epidural I was laying prone on the table, they gave me sedation ,but when they stuck the needle in I felt the worst pain ever I felt it go through my whole body with a vibration feel, and i raised up into the needle, my blood pressure dropped, my respiratory rate dropped, my Oxygen dropped, my heart rate dropped, but my ETCO2 was high which leads to hyperventilating and Respiratory Arrest, and i know i was hyperventilating when that needle hit something, so we got my medical records and they state that they prepped my lumbar not my cervical so i had 2 shots except the cervical wasn't numbed, and I signed for a specific doctor to do the procedure but another one did it, and they knew something was going to be wrong because they gave me extra medicine and sent me home with all that extra sedation in me so I wouldn't be there when the symptoms started, but I was sick, throwing up, and had a bad headache and they tried to cover it up, by putting on my discharge papers that my vitals were back to normal the same as when I got there , Blood pressure 107/70, Oxygen 100% Respiratory 20, which I knew wasn't right because everyone said I was a stumbling zombie, so I had it checked twice after we left and it was 92/50 and a few hours after that it was 90/50, but on the medical records vitals chart when I was discharged it said my vitals were Blood pressure 94/55, Oxygen 94%, I'm thinking it may be criminal to put the wrong vitals down thinking it would be overlooked since that's all that will be in your patient portal, waiting to see if this lawyer can take the case since they don't have much time to check into it, then if it's too late, for him to help, I figure go public on live tv, to caution people but I have to wait on them to go over my medical report to make sure everything I'm saying is correct before I can on the news, then report to the insurance why they had to pay and will be paying the rest of my life, on doctor visits for this, from negligence that could've been prevented. And also what they have to pay when i lose my vision. I'm leaving my number so if you have had something like this happen to you, and you have proof in your medical records, and you would like to help get the word out call, people wouldn't get mad and look for lawyers if they would say I'm so sorry this happened to you, but i guess that doesn't happen around here, 256-496-1300 Also the fluoroscopy only has 2 images and the reports said no results. read more

Although I'm not a vegan or vegetarian, I do enjoy plant-based eating from time to time. Since it's in a hospital, all employees wore masks and abided by social distancing guidelines. One of the things I enjoy is the vegetable soup. It's so absolutely hearty! It's full of heart-healthy veggies like tomatos, peas, carrots, corn, and okra. Not to mention it's well-seasoned. In addition to the soup I also got boiled okra and tomatoes. I really enjoy okra, and I even added some to my soup. This was a simple yet satisfying meal, and I will absolutely get it again. read more

Parking is ample, with Valet available. The is a Starbucks immediately when you walk into the building from the parking deck. Hospital is visible and available which is a comforting feeling for folks coming out late at night. The UAB hospital staff are very courteous and every time I've visited here have been extremely helpful. Going to a place so large can be overwhelming but due to UAB's willingness to help me, I've navigated all appointments just fine. Now if you happen to be here, please check out the Taco Salad... I had to spend nearly 2 weeks in this hospital, it was the worst hopital I had ever been in my life! The staff was nice but an integral part of wellness is the ability to get proper nutrition. This hospital has the worst food, even serving rotten food to me after waiting hours to even get the food. One must order yourself and that alone is a challenge, waiting hours on the phone before a person answered or you get disconnected. I will never set foot in that hospital again! read more

My mother is currently at UAB and the quality of care she is getting is very poor. She went without food overnight and did not receive anything till 10:30 the next day. Hospitals are about the quality of care of a patient, poor performance is unacceptable and there is no reason why patients should go without assistance. The level of care for making sure patients have all that they need is not there. It suppose to be quality over quantity. I know working can be overwhelming and staff may be overworked but there still be some empathy showed for patients. UAB needs to acknowledge their patients and trained their staff to be more diligent in making sure all of their patients receive proper care and are treated fairly with respect as if it was their love one. read more

Unless you come in on an ambulance with trauma they will not see you. This says the wait time is 37 minutes and that is not right. My daughter and I were there for three hours and she was in a lot of pain. There was another young woman that was there with a severe headache and she was there longer. My daughter and I finally left and went to St. Vincent's where they treated her for a bowel blockage. It is like one of those places you read about where you literally have to be dying before they see you. They don't want you to be there and they don't care how much pain you are in. I understand that they are one of the best trauma centers in the country but unless you have a gun shot wound or are in a car accident don't go there. read more

You might not think about it much, but Pathology is a crucial part of the hospital. Dr Jeremiah Pasion is a dermatopathology fellow here (skin disease) and he very clearly knows his stuff. Made all the difference in getting the right diagnosis. read more

When people think of hospital food, they think of plain, boring, sad food. But the UAB hospital food court offers different types of food to accommodate the a diverse population coming to the hospital. There's the deli, pizza, sushi, salad station and 2-3 different grilling stations. My favorite station is the World's Cuisine. This is where they would have cajun chicken pasta and shrimp and grits. Y'all their portions are generous. Plus the cooks ask you if you want it spicy or add more parmesan cheese. I love coming here for lunch because it is actually pretty affordable. Their courses also offered different selections of meat to make it easily pescatarian (shrimp only) or go all out and do combo style (meat plus shrimp). Definitely gets busy during lunch with all the hospital workers coming in and you might have to wait 15-20 minutes sometimes. But the employees do try their best to keep the line moving by taking your order beforehand and write it on the take out box. read more

Had a family member come here for surgery so I can only comment on what I observed. Everyone at the hospital were very nice and accommodating. From the doctors to the staff, they were always friendly and willing to help. The facilities were clean and well kept. Again only seeing this from an outsiders point of view, things were very nice. The do have a few options for food. There is a Starbucks, Au Bon Pan and the food court. There are also vending options located all over the hospital. read more

The most unprofessional office I've ever had to deal with to date. I set up a psychiatry appointment 6 months in advance when I was moving to Birmingham for my psychiatric medicine. They have rescheduled me now four times. They called me yesterday to try and change me to a different doctor, and wanted to change the date of my appointment, The day before the appointment at almost 5 o'clock in the afternoon. I had already set up a dentist appointment for the day and time they were trying to reschedule me to. So I got to keep my initial appointment after I did already been changed three times keep in mind (which is now four times I've taken off from work for this appointment..) so today 20 minutes before my appointment they tell me the doctor didn't come in. So they need to reschedule me for two weeks in the future. As I'm writing this I get another phone call that it's being rescheduled again. Great work uab !!! THEY SUCK! My husband died on 1-6-18 and I had a horrendously nightmare experience with the personal there. They had me wait 2 HOURS after he passed before they allowed me to see him. His body was stone cold, his mouth was wide open, his body was drained of all fluids causing him to be the color of the white sheets, they had to door standng wide open for ALL to see him and they had shaved his face!!!! They kept keeping me, "We'll take you back to see him soon." About every 15 minutes they said this. Over and over for 2 hours. WHY? WHY? WHY? read more

Came here because I LITERALLY COULD NOT BREATHE. I was coughing so much that I threw up and could not get any air!!! Reception was TRASH. "Oh yeah we're gonna take care of you you'll be seen!!!" At first they said all that then 6 hours passed and I was still waiting and still could not Beene. I got worse and they didn't care. When I asked how long it would be after waiting 6 hours they said "we can't tell you a time plenty of people came on front of you etc" then they made up something about how there weren't enough beds and then said this guy was going to check on it but then he went and did something else and we saw him just sitting there so we asked nd they were like "oh yeah he is checking" and we said "no he isn't" and they said "yes he is" and then we said "we can see him" and then we left and went to Brookwood. I would definitely pick Brookwood. Don't come here this place is trash. read more

Terrible malpractice, subpar care, nursing staff on their personal cell phones more concerned about their outside lives than reading a patient chart, homeless people urinating/defecating/harrassing crying family members outside of the ER, significant lack of communication between staff and departments, slow to address major medical complications, lack of communication with family members, almost giving the wrong medications. I continue to be shocked after six weeks at how significantly subpar the medical care is at this hospital. Shame on you as an organization. read more
