My son was a patient at UAB for several weeks. At the time of his admittance he did not have a pressure wound. I can prove this because of the records of his previous healthcare provider. He was kept sedated for the first few weeks. A family member was at his side 24/7. During this time no mention was made of a pressure wound. No adjustments were made regularly to prevent pressure wounds. By the time it was brought to my attention that there was a sore it has become quite severe. I have no complaints about the nurses themselves. They are overworked and unappreciated. The problem as I see it was a lack of consistency in the care of the wound. It should be well known what steps are taken in caring for each patients wound. This was NEVER the case. Because of this his wound received different and at times even no care. I believe arrogance of doctors and heads of departments played a major role in this. Looking to your own ego instead of the patient as an individual deserving your best care and attention is wrong. My son was strong enough that his body overcame the health problems that resulted in his hospitalization. He was not strong enough to overcome the stage four pressure wound. read more

My husband recently spent 10 days in the Hazelrig-Salter Oncology Center at UAB Hospital. Every nurse, patient care tech and doctor we encountered was professional, efficient and compassionate as they cared for my husband. When we needed a nurse, they came very quickly. Been here a few weeks now. The Doctors are great, the nurses are mostly great, the PCTs are great also. Not so great: The food is nowhere near the quality it was last year when I was here, & usually cold by the time it gets here to the upper floors. But my biggest problem has been the call button. Quite often when I press it, it can take up to 15 minutes for a response. Then my request -wheather for medication bedpan etc never seems to get passed along to my nurse or pct or anyone. It's not fun laying in a pool of your own poop. So 2 stars. read more

I came here for a small abscess and was seen fairly quickly and the dr helped me greatly. However, I was there with a good friend of mine who is a veteran and she got there when I did at 10pm for a serious leg wound that was also badly infected and we walked out at 4am because she still hadn't been seen. They had her sitting in the most uncomfortable wheelchair for HOURS. She was cold and her butt was hurting from the chair so I asked for a blanket to put under her and over her and we were very rudely told no that for COVID reasons they couldn't give her a blanket. They were rude and very dismissive. She was sitting there crying and shivering and they just stay there and watched didn't even offer her a damn tissue. They wouldn't even give her something for pain. There was two women who showed concern and tried helping her be seen faster or at least figure out why the hell we were sitting there for so long and they couldn't get anything accomplished. We left and walk to the va hospital up the street who took her and saw her within minutes of us getting there. The people at the va were polite and agreed that the way my friend was treated was wrong. She's a disabled veteran who can barely walk without a huge gash in her shin she wasn't ever rude or anything even I tried to calmly and politely ask what is going on and they couldn't be bothered with an actual answer. I understand that there were a lot of beds full of COVID patients but really they couldn't even fast track her like they did with me? My reason for visiting the hospital wasn't nearly as bad as hers. It's bullshit. They need to get it together seriously. That is NOT how you treat people, and NOT how people who served in the military should be treated. read more

Almost killed me during surgery to remove a rectal cancer tumor in 2023. Caused me sepsis but did not tell me I had sepsis. My stomach lining died during surgery. Doctor told my husband and mother she was not sure i would make it. Caused me gastroparesis, catheterized me, hospitalized me for almost a year, made me lose physical strength due to almost no physical therapy while in hospital. Then had the nerve to charge me thousands of dollars for almost killing me. Then sent my bill to collections when I could not pay it. Destroyed my body and the quality of my life because the surgery was botched. They gave me a permanent colostomy because they could not reconnect my colon and rectum after the surgery went wrong. The only way they knew how to clean my insides out from the sepsis and infections was to make me wear a colostomy bag the rest of my life. I have to empty the thing several times a day at work in my job as a receptionist and I have to empty the bag several times during thr night, causing me bad sleep quality. Be careful I had a cervical epidural procedure done, they didn't prep nor numb the area of my Cervical instead the prepped my Lumbar, when the needle went in i raised up into the needle, now i have sciatica, paralysis, lesions, white matter, chronic denervation on my left side, I'm still in physical therapy and i have to wear a foot and leg brace, and I'm losing my peripheral vision. So, if something goes wrong at UAB don't do like i did and wait for them to fix it and do test to help, because all that does is make it to where you can't get a lawyer, YOU HAVE A 2 YEAR STATUE OF LIMITATIONS. And a lawyer has to have time to investigate the problem, so DO NOT WAIT A YEAR FOR THEM TO DO TEST TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED because then its too late to get a lawyer, AGAIN DON"T WAIT OR IT"S TOO LATE, THAT"S WHAT A LAWYER IS FOR, I'm probably going to have these problems forever and they are getting worst, going to start a social group to where everyone who has been done wrong from that hospital can communicate, because i have talked to others who has been done wrong also, that is one way to raise awareness, the only reason I'm leaving a star is because you have to leave at least one star to leave a review read more

The staff and the doctors were very accommodating on my visit here. They were always nice when answering questions, be they medical related or just trying to find a bathroom or the cafeteria. The rooms were nice. They validated my parking. While there is never a good reason to go the hospital, at least this one is top notch! read more

Gm My appointment was at 10:00 a.m. was on time. This is The Heart Failure Transitional care services for adults Clinic. I have been going here for about two years and almost every visit I receive excellent care. At check in they have an office assistant who is totally awesome without her the office doesn't run properly and when isn't there things have a tendency to fall apart. THEY SUCK! My husband died on 1-6-18 and I had a horrendously nightmare experience with the personal there. They had me wait 2 HOURS after he passed before they allowed me to see him. His body was stone cold, his mouth was wide open, his body was drained of all fluids causing him to be the color of the white sheets, they had to door standng wide open for ALL to see him and they had shaved his face!!!! Being a health care professional I cannot begin to tell you how impressed I was with UAB. My mother's doctor, Dr. Weiss from Ortho surgery took his time to explain options and treatments to my mother. I appreciated his approach and his attitude. This is a top notch facility. While sitting in the lobby I was humbled by the number of people who traveled here from around the world for treatments and a possible cure for their ailments. Everyone was very professional and polite. The atmosphere promoted healing and hope. UAB made me proud to be a part of the medical profession. read more

THE WORST HOSPITAL!!! I'm from out of town and needed emergency medical attention, the staff is rude and mean and doesn't not care to attend to my needs. We are currently waiting for 7 hours now and the people behind the desk genuinely do not care to attend to helping me. They keep calling everyone else's name prior to mine, (all these people come after me) this is horrible. I've never experienced this treatment and would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

My mother has been coming to UAB for her cancer treatments, cancer surgery, and follow ups. The staff was great during the surgery. Afterwards, it has been terrible service. She has had a lot of problems and scary things happen since her surgery. She calls, and calls, and no one ever calls her back. The only way she ever can get a hold of someone is if she writes several messages through the Portal. She has oral cancer and no one even bothers to check on her. She had major surgery and could not even get pain meds. They made her feel drug seeking and unimportant. She is a CANCER patient. She deserves better treatment than this. The only reason I gave 2 stars is because they helped save her life. read more

I like UAB. One-stop shop and you can see any doctor and they have ability to review any records from UAB doctors. However, some of the doctors tend to not care like they should. It has become a treat em and street em industry. read more

UAB Medical Center is a nationally ranked hospital with nationally ranked physicians. If you're looking for the very best doctors and surgeons, there is no other place I'd rather be seen than UAB Medical Center. Why would you go to any other hospital in Birmingham? In fact, if you need to see a specialist, why would you go to any other hospital in Alabama? UAB's specialists all have sub-specialties, so who could ask for more than that. If you're looking for a great bed side manner over the physicians skill, then maybe UAB is not right for you. Go to one of the other three hospitals in Birmingham and test your luck, but there's a good chance you'll end up at UAB to either fix the other hospital's mistakes or because the other hospital could not get the job done. I'm not saying UAB doesn't have physicians with good bed side manners, but I'm just saying I'd prefer a physician who knows what he/she is talking about or has a steady surgical hand. So many hospitals, not just in Birmingham or even Alabama, refer their patients to UAB. So, why not have all your medical records located in one place. UAB Medical Center is the place where you know you can be treated for whatever ails you! read more

Been here over 12 hours in the emergency room and have as yet to be seen! Absolutely horrible. I will not be returning.

The nurse was very sweet, but I'm pregnant, and the doctor came in and told me he wouldn't test me for anemia, wouldn't check on my Uti, wouldn't see if I was dehydrated... He said you're fine, you're just pregnant. Your bp is 131/59, and that tells me you aren't dehydrated. WHAT?! I'm pregnant and just needed some help. read more

Terrible, absolutely terrible...didn't do basic labs, misdiagnosed a cat scan leading to a pointless waste of money for an admission that could have been avoided with basic lab work turns out it is probably a UTI but we're not even sure at this point and will have to go spend the other half of my paycheck at another hospital. My wife (the patient) would be yelling in pain and would have to ask 3-5 times for medication only to wait for it (on average) 1.5-2 hours. They were not that busy. I saw nurses at the station browsing the internet. Rude and terribly incompetent staff. I really expected a lot better from a University Hospital. This place is just as bad as Walker County and that's saying something... We are currently considering legal action after we get our second opinion. read more

My first visit was through UAB ER ... I was so sick and in so much pain from an already diagnosed pancreatic tumor... My husband and I had to endure a full search upon entering (he had to hold me up), no one offered assistance nor a wheelchair. Then i had to find my way alone through their crazy sign in process, to a chair i could lay across as they informed my husband he had to go park the car (FOUR BLOCKS AWAY) and he wasnt allowed to stay to help me. When finally called to the back, along with several other patients, NONE of us were offered assistance of any kind to make it through mazes of hallways stumbling into walls as sick as we ALL were! Once in a room, saw a great and kind dr who ordered tests and medications... I was given several cups of contrasts to drink in prep for testing only to be told hours later that radiology decided they wouldn't be doing the tests right now. I was moved 3 times, finally stuck in the back of a supply room, kept THERE several hours....saw four more doctors, all proclaiming the others didn't know what they were doing, all wanting to do different treatments, etc and NONE listening when we told them I already HAD a doctor AND had a diagnoses. After being admitted, this continued, none would contact my dr nor look at the records my dr sent them. I had to call my dr from my room to let him know what was going on. Five times throughout the week I was prepped for tests, kept without food/water, only to find out hours later tests were canceled yet again. Doctors ordered pain medicines yet it took HOURS to get it from pharmacy! Every time!! The ONLY saving grace of this hospital stay were the wonderful nurses who tried so hard to take excellent care of me while waiting on the rest of the staff to DO THEIR JOB! I would NEVER suggest to ANYONE to use UAB Hospital nor Emergency Dept.... And, after having to go back there for major surgery I feel the same now. My dr and all nurses were EXCELLANT..... Respiratory team was bad to not show up for scheduled treatments, pharmacy was horrible, slow, uncaring. Pain control was almost none existant, and i was ridiculed for complaining about the intense pain/length of time it took to get help for pain...Radiology was undependable at the very least. Food was horrible, although service was quick. Housekeeping was so wonderful and did excellant work while treating me with utmost respect. PRIVACY is none existant here. Everyone walks in the door, slings your covers back to expose your naked body to all standing out in the hall, i had to continually ask that i be covered from the public exposure. read more
