The Player's Palace is a step above the sort of tournament room you'd expect to find in a…read morenon-casino environment. To be honest, they're an even better place to play than the casinos in the area. Their tournaments have better structures, generally more players, and lower rakes than the under $150 buy-in tournaments at any of the casinos I've visited in Oregon and Washington. As a tournament fan I've visited almost all of them over the years, so I was pretty surprised to find the best overall deal right here in Portland. They compare easily with Reno or smaller Vegas casinos. Their ambitious schedule and variety of buy-ins (From $30 up) means that you should be able to find something to your liking pretty easily, so long as you're looking to play Hold-em. They have yet to offer any PLO tournaments, although they do offer some PLO8. The staff keeps the place running smooth and generally conflict-free. While there are the occasional blow-ups and arguments, it's nothing out of the ordinary and the floor employees will quickly calm things down when needed. The snack and beverage prices are very reasonable, with a waitress who walks around the room so you don't have to get up and miss a hand. While you're not going to get a Venetian-style experience (My biggest complaint is their lack of antes) I've found the best overall poker in town at the Player's Palace.

They had an adjacent parking garage that made it very convenient to go in and out of the hotel with our rental car. Our room was in one of the high floors with big windows that got really nice sunlight. The room had modern interiors, furnishing and functional amenities. The beds were comfortable. They had a big indoor pool with warm water. The gym was also nice. The lobby area had the Mayore restaurant where hotel guests went for breakfast and other meals. The bar in the lobby was a popular spot for the guests. The courthouse park, Pioneer Place, public transportation, many other shops and restaurants, all were within few minutes of walk. We had a wonderful time staying at the hotel, with zero issues during the stay. When I went to the lobby few times for questions, the staff members were quick to help.

We got both the night life experience and the day time experience. I think I preferred the day time because it wasn't as busy. Night means cover charge ($4) and bag check. And no kids. You might see some kids during the day. What a cool place, with yummy drinks (no food), and all my favorite arcade games, and then some! They operate on a card system, so no coins needed when you visit. My pinball wizard friend had been traveling arcade ready with coins in her bag, but it turns out they weren't needed. Ground Kontrol supplies free lockers to store your stuff; just follow the instructions and don't forget your code. I learned a lot about pinball during my visits here, and played more pinball than I usually do because of that. I mean, why not? I played one of the newest pinball games, released within weeks of my visit, which was Pokemon themed, and I played one of the more vintage pinball machines, Xenon. And everything in between! It was awesome. $20 loaded onto a card will get you 15ish games, but there is a different cost depending on which game you're playing. So when you come in, pass the valet riveters to the left, and take the elevator up. The check-in process was fast, but the elevators took longer than they did. To access the elevators to the room floors, you need a key unless you're going down to the 1st floor or lobby. There's a restaurant on the 15th floor that had a line at the elevator because they wanted to access it without a key, and I think that's what kept the elevator area busy. The rooms are pretty big and spacious, with your usual amenities and mini-bar items. The couch was a good size. However, the TV does not move, so if you are on the couch and watching TV, the angle is sideways. The in-room dining menu is limited, with little selection, and even the restaurant/bar behind the lobby has a limited food menu. The bed was comfortable, but the pillows were very flat when you lay on them. The housekeeping staff was very friendly and nice

While AMEX travel provided some good perks, it felt like the property itself fell short. From the restaurant bar not letting us taste a sip of wine even though it was served by the glass, to the long wait to get the glass from the bartender after hoping to sit for a full lunch service. Additionally, when returning to the hotel there were no spots in front for valet, so I out in my flashers and waited 5 minutes for someone to come to my car. They then told me to keep circling the block until the front area cleared. I'd say the service all in all was subpar, slow, and the staff was a bit out of touch...with the exception of the very professional & helpful front desk staff.
