My partner and I visited Uchiba Austin on Saturday afternoon and left feeling underwhelmed. Unfortunately, the service set the tone for the experience. Our server appeared disengaged and eager to end their shift rather than attend to our table. When we asked basic questions about menu items and the tea selection, they were unable to answer and made no effort to follow up. Other staff members ended up delivering dishes and resetting the table between courses. The food didn't compensate for the subpar service . I expected more precision in the sushi preparation, several rolls were unevenly cut and loosely assembled. The ramen was the highlight of the meal and well executed. I've never been to any Uchi places so thought I'd start off by going to Uchiba since their happy hour menu is extensive compared to the others. I'm only reviewing the happy hour. I ordered the espresso martini and it's on the bitter stronger side if you like that! I'm more into sweets. The wagyu was a bit under cooked but some might like more red in their steaks, I definitely recommend ordering the skewers to share it comes in two! My friend really enjoyed the crispy dumplings but I did not, it's giving Thai basil vibes. I did enjoy the fried chicken wings with Korean sauce. I got a hand roll also but it was okay nothing exceptional. I do think this is a good place for happy hour, I just have to give it another try. It's better 4-5:30 (tight schedule). I recently visited Uchibā for the Omakase Happy Hour for 2. We were celebrating a job promotion and wanted to treat ourselves to some good drinks and even better sushi! I have enjoyed eating at the Dallas location during my visits back home, so I was excited to finally visit their new location in Austin. Absolutely obsessed with this spot for lunch! The food is so good and such a great value that I came back twice more in the same week just for the lunch special. Seriously, it's that good. Service has been excellent every time--friendly, attentive, and perfectly timed without ever making us feel rushed. It does get busy during lunch hours, but totally worth it. My current obsession is the sesame ramen salad--fresh, flavorful, and just perfect. I also loved the Hama Chili (a must-try). Other favorites: the Crying Tiger bao bun and the Uchi burger--both packed with flavor. The pork dumplings were a bit unexpected--they're fried and have a bold, unique taste. Located on the southwest side of downtown Austin, it's a bit removed from the usual hustle and bustle you see from the middle or east of downtown. The space itself is really nice and feels a bit of a time warp to Mad Men era with its dimly lit moody midcentury decor and curves. If you wanted more light, you could sit on the patio or closer to a window but we welcomed the mood and opted to sit at the bar. My friend and I came for the summer omakase marketed as a $90 9-course signature tasting for 2 people. That's $90 total (not each), which is an insane deal. We expected to still be hungry so we added two oysters to start. However, those 9 courses are more than enough to fill you up. All food was served together to share - 2 hiramasa nigiri sushi, 4 slices of hama chili, 2 hamachi hand rolls, fried Brussels sprouts, 2 chicken tsukune skewers, 1 ba burger, 2 bluefin tuna tartar gunkan, 2 salmon nigiri, and finished with 2 pineapple popsicles. If you ordered individually from the happy hour menu, it'd be about $100. It totals $92 excluding the Brussels sprouts as those aren't on the menu. So doing the math, you don't save as much as if you ordered individually but it just goes to show what good value and how filling the omakase happy hour is. And it is a lot easier to order the tasting instead of deciding what items to order yourself. Each bite was amazing. The nigiri were seasoned and lightly sauced so you don't need to do any dipping. What I love about Uchi restaurants' sushi in general is their use of textured salt (seems like Maldon's) that really brings out the flavor of the fish and seasonings. The pineapple popsicle was a great refreshing way to end the meal. It's perfectly sweet, tart, and has great texture and savory notes from the cereal crumble. I could eat that every day. 1 Star When people said Uchima was fun and chic and yummy, we thought they meant the food. Turns out, they might've been referring to the thrill of being publicly snubbed like extras in a low-budget reboot of Pretty Woman: Austin Edition. We were in town for a weekend that doubled as a business getaway and figured we'd try this stylish, cool, scene-y spot we'd heard so much about. We popped in around 3 PM, excited to check it out, only to be told happy hour didn't start until 4 PM. Fair enough! We killed time across the street with an appetizer and smoothie at The Proper. At 3:52 PM, we returned. The restaurant was mostly empty. We saw a few other patrons already seated, so imagine our surprise when we were briskly intercepted by a woman in all black with long brown hair who told us, without so much as a hello, that we couldn't be seated. Instead, we were guided to two lonely stools near the front--basically a time-out corner for sushi sinners. It honestly felt like we were in trouble. All that was missing was a bell ringing and someone calling us to the principal's office. The vibe? Less welcome party, more silent judgment panel. At 4 PM sharp, a hostess with blonde curly hair let us know we could finally sit at the sushi bar. Progress! We sat down, opened our menus, and were just starting to enjoy the idea of a nice meal when a waiter with feathered curly hair swooped in and told us the entire bar was reserved. And get this--he said the guests for those seats had already arrived and were waiting on us to move. Yep, nothing like feeling super welcome in a mostly empty restaurant while being told you're the problem. We explained that his own coworkers had just seated us there, but he told us to move anyway--to the other bar, where he just so happened to also be the bartender. Suspicious? Just wait. We were seated again, and not thirty seconds later, he started pushing us to order right away. We hadn't even finished flipping the menu open. And as I glanced back at the sushi bar, guess what? Only two seats were taken. Our two. Still warm. The rest? Empty. Apparently, the imaginary reservation squad had either ghosted or never existed. I said something--politely--and he rolled his eyes. Like we were the problem. No apology, no acknowledgment. Just silent superiority and vibes that screamed, "You're not from around here, are you?" Look, if I wanted to be judged for my existence while being redirected from empty chairs, I could've stayed home and gone to Whole Foods in mismatched athleisure. I don't need a sushi side of shame with my happy hour. This place may have style, but it seriously lacks grace. And for the record, it's not that deep--we just wanted a nice meal and a little hospitality. Uchima gave us drama, bad vibes, and a free front-row seat to what not to do in hospitality. What a whirlwind of an evening! Full transparency--my boyfriend and I had a 10:15 reservation for the sushi bar on Valentine's Day but weren't seated until nearly 11:00. We arrived about 20 minutes early (we left early due to potential road closures for the marathon), but by 10:30, we were still standing in the entryway. I went back to the host to check in and was told the table we were waiting on had just ordered dessert, which was frustrating. I pointed out that they would still need time for the kitchen to prepare the dessert, for the guests to eat, pay, and for the table to be cleaned before we'd be seated. The host confirmed this and said they were trying to find another spot for us but were fully booked. I made it clear we didn't want to be seated elsewhere--we booked the sushi bar for a reason. Plenty of Austin restaurants have time limits for reservations, and they really should have enforced that on Valentine's Day. If the other table wanted dessert, it should've been to-go. Making us stand at the front past our reservation time was unacceptable. That said, our first round of drinks and two appetizers were comped, which I appreciated, but the wait still left a sour taste. That aside, I can't recommend the sushi bar enough. Your server is the chef, and they coursed out our meal with plenty of thoughtful recommendations. Our server, Austin, was phenomenal--he single-handedly turned the night around. He deserves 10 gold stars for his service!! This might just be my favorite spot in the Uchiko/Uchi/Uchiba chain. The cozy seating makes for a great dining experience. Parking can be tricky--you'll need to find street parking, valet, or a nearby garage. The sashimi is incredibly fresh, and our server, Georgia, was attentive, knowledgeable and training--she knew everything about the fish we were curious about. We ordered from the Toyosu column, meaning our selections--kuradai, inada, masu, and uni--were flown in from Tokyo that same day. The cocktails were fantastic. The lychee martini was a little small but delicious, while the tequila pineapple with egg foam was on the sweeter side. My personal favorite was the gin & yuzu honey. First, I am a vegetarian and my hubs is omni. We came here for my birthday, and basically split a bunch of their vegetarian options. We were sat outside and the place still had an intimate vibe. We completed the Uchi trifecta with Uchibā, the newest downtown location, and I have to say--I loved it. We started with a selection of appetizers: oysters with wagyu fat and onions, which were incredible until it was noted they tasted like a McDonald's cheeseburger haha, yucca chips, which were so addictive I could have eaten an entire bowl on my own, and masu (ocean trout), reminding me that I should order sashimi at the Uchi restaurants more often. The spicy, saucy karaage was elevated by the addition of yuzu pear chunks, which were absolutely phenomenal. The mushroom hot rock, a unique offering at Uchibā, was exceptionally juicy and flavorful, just as impressive as the wagyu version at the other locations. The madai crudo was another highlight, and by this point in the meal, I was already overwhelmed with happiness. As a surprise for our friend's birthday, Uchiba provided a complimentary yellowtail collar. With its crunchy coating and rich, meaty texture, it was an unexpected delight: something we wouldn't have ordered ourselves but thoroughly enjoyed. The pho dumplings were pure comfort, so good that they should consider selling them frozen for at-home indulgence. Among the other dishes, the spicy tuna roll stood out with its pear and shallot accents, elevating an otherwise classic selection. The short rib dumplings and maguro crudo had similar flavor profiles to things we'd already tried that night but were equally well-executed. The soft-shell crab bao, paired with apple and hot sauce, delivered a fantastic mix of flavors and textures, while the tiger cry pork belly was as good as a pork belly bao could be. Really enjoyed the baos. For dessert, we opted for fried milk, sugar-coated tteokbokki and black rice ice cream with chili crunch. Upon entering you're immediately taken into a mid-century modern meets contemporary lounge, chill vibes for sure. Upscale but relaxed, definitely designed for the classic cocktail/happy hour in mind. Delicious drinks paired with delicious bites. 1st Monday of the month they do not do Happy hour, instead they collaborate with local chefs on ramen dishes. (not sure if it's always ramen) Instead of happy hour we ordered a little bit of everything; starting with soft shell bao - I'd say the fermented kimchi/slaw that was in the bun overpowered the delicate flavor of the soft shell. It was super vinegary and not really to my liking. I would've love the flavor in maybe an aioli sauce. 4/10 probably won't do again. Next up, Kani maki it's brown butter poached snow crab, with avocado, crispy fried (something) wrapped in rice paper. This was delicious; let be real, everything's better with butter. The snow crab was sweet and well balanced with the butter and the different textures with every bite. 8/10 would do again. Next up the aged king salmon, I've had some amazing wet aged fish and this just wasn't it for me. Where I wanted the king salmon to come in with the buttery creamy flavor it just didn't. These bites made me a little sad, I ordered 6 pieces thinking it was going to be standard blow my mind; it wasn't. It had the essence of salmon with the after taste of refrigerator. Definitely disappointing, let's just say my wife had a piece and pushed them all towards me. :( sad salmon days. Next up, Madai Cruda - this was a 10/10 would do again and recommend! I wish I would've ordered 5 of these. The fish was delicately creamy, and the acidic oils and juices at the bottom gave the flavor amazing balance; combine all that with a beautifully placed pear sliver that added the texture to make the perfect bite! 10/10 absolutely recommend. Next up, Inari Maki - our chef kept putting us on this and since it was tofu we were really hesitant. I will say, this was an 8.5/10 I would recommend. The flavors were light, with the perfect sauce combination and the crispy texture just tied it all together for the perfect bite. Next up, Kabocha croquettes - these little guys were crispy, full of soft potato, but really lacked on the pork belly. I've had traditional croquettes and absolutely love them, I think they should rename these to the essence of pork belly because that doesn't come through at all. They jazz them up with a vinegar slaw thing that was a little too much for me but the sauce under them tied it all together. I liked them, but who doesn't love a good fried mashed potato! I would give these a 4/10 wouldn't recommend if you're expecting pork belly. 6 of ten if you just want fried delicious mashed potatoes, the slaw can be moved to the side no problem. Maybe a happy hour recommendation if it's on that menu. I had way more dishes than I care to review so let's end on the croquettes. The service here was 10/10, the staff was friendly, attententive, made great recommendations and guided us through our food and drink experiences. The sushi chefs explained a majority of the bites, and what one couldn't elaborate on the others would chime in. I love sitting a sushi bars and the chefs back there did not disappoint!! Our drink server was also on point with recommendations, explanations and carrying us through the perfect pairings. 10/10 the staff definitely elevates the experience. Such a lovely experience we had at Uchiba to celebrate my birthday month! The staff greeted us with a cute little birthday card upon checking in. We had a reservation for the patio at 4:30 PM, but it was a bit too windy outside this day. We were offered to sit at a table inside, but would be limited to sit for about an hour and half. There was space open at the bar, so we decided to sit there so we could take our time if needed. Jordan was our server for the evening and she was such a gem. For a NYE night, we snagged patio seating which was nice since the weather was perfect. Only complaint was the tables were wobbly and unstable. In terms of quality of food, no complaints for the sashimi pieces. Prices are similar if not the same as the sister restaurants. The Tiger Cry Bao was solid, with hints of Vietnamese flavors from the pickled veggies but pretty pricey at $8.5 for just one bao IMO. The karaage came out as something definitely shareable between 2 or more people. The chicken was nicely breaded and had a really strong Asian citrus flavor which my husband and I enjoyed. The Zero San was a hit for mé, nothing stood out in terms of flavor. If you're looking for a strong cocktail, try their Nitro Espresso Martini! It packed a punch, with its bold nitro coffee flavors mixed with vodka. Service was okay and not up to par as the service you would receive at Uchi/Uchiko. We were without water for a while and our waitress was missing for a while. The concept of this restaurant felt a little more casual and less upscale IMO. After this visit, I still favor Uchi for their menu selections, service and quality. read more

We had great service right out of the gate. Everyone made us feel welcome and special. We happened to go on the one weeknight that they don't do happy hour. On one hand it was a bummer... I wish there was something online to indicate the change, and on the other hand we were happy to be able to try their special "first Monday" menu, including a beer pairing from Meanwhile. I tend to prefer less salty food, so I found a few of the dishes "over seasoned" for my taste, but the quality of ingredients and care in each dish lives up to the Uchi and Uchiko reputations. We demolished the menu to be honest. Being an Uchi fan, I knew I was going to be walking into a place of high standards. It was originally a reservation at 4p Saturday for a party of 4 but my friend was able to add 2 more with no issues. We got seated outside. Truly ideal weather for it and you'll see about 100 of those party bikes roll by. It was pretty amusing. Menu can be overwhelming, Megan was super knowledgeable of the menu and guided us through it. She did mention that it was better to place all sushi orders right away because as the evening progresses, they get busier and there can be some delays in getting food out. But we didn't experience that. Dishes were coursed out nicely, the moments of pause were much needed in order to savor the flavors. Drink recommendations were also on point. Downfall were the desserts. Chocolate cremeux was similar to a deconstructed Reese's but every bite wasn't an equal amount of ingredients or flavor. The crispy fried tteokbokki had an interesting texture, similar to a soft Cheeto puff and very very sweet. The rest of the group enjoyed them though. This is a relatively new place. We went for a friend's birthday and they took really good care of us even though they ran out of a few dishes that we wanted. They are still figuring out how much fish to order each week. Our waiter was amazing and came from the original Uchi. The atmosphere was full of people and lively. We had the following. - Drink: paper crane - had the tiniest little paper crane on the edge of the glass - rutabaga noodles - very tasty, sauce really balanced it out - Pho Wagyu beef dumplings - ran out and we were really looking forward to trying this - They let us try the pork dumplings instead which was ok - Chicken bun - nice and spicy but reading is a little doughy tasting (skip) didn't like the texture - Gyutoro- 72 hour short rib (fav) - Bluefin chutoro - Uchiba salad - really good Caesar salad with crispy bits - Hotate- scallops - Golden eye snapper - running out The Gyutoro 72-hour short rib, bluefin chi chutoro and Uchiba salad were my favs. I would come back but try for an earlier reservation vs a 9:30. read more

2.5 stars Came back to try more items. The second time around confirmed for me that the food just isn't up to par with other Asian or sushi spots in town. The food is definitely way overpriced for the quality and execution. The sushi pieces are the best part of the menu food wise. The ambiance is really nice and it's in a central location.
