I picked up some sushi from here to take out with me to eat at The Elephant Room, jazz club just below where my friend Sarah Sharp was playing that night. The inside is mostly bar seating with a few tables. I hope to one day come back for a sit down meal. The person helping me with my to go order was friendly. I walked around the place while I waited for my food. I thought their take on a roll was fine, but the rice seemed a bit dry. Also, they gave me a ton of ginger, which I don't eat, and I didn't find much, if any, wasabe. Maybe they forgot to put in a side of it but put extra ginger instead. Great sushi place for happy hour. Was debating between omakaze (chef's course) or Ala carte. We picked Ala carte. Venue: cute place. Tables and sushi bar seat available. Food: well, I can't say it was very traditional. Came here when I saw picture of chawaushi (streamed egg) in the omakaze. So I tried their nigiri mostly. Tried my favorite of all time otoro sashimi. Very fatty but had some sinew. Hokkaido uni was very good. Their "salmon belly omg" was very so good. Ikura was.. a disappointment. I don't know why they marinated the ikura so sour, the taste was very odd. Hamachi belly was pretty good. Chawanmushi was a real disappointment, I'm sorry but felt like the place butchered my favorite hot dish by over cooking the egg, dashi was not there as where it should be. A5 wagyu, I felt it was overcooked and bland. However, I felt the happy hour menu- was very good priced and loved the hamachi belly and salmon nigiri in the happy hour menu. House sake price was pretty good priced too with beer. Service: young gentleman man was very good server. Exceptional service. Price: great happy hour price. We were out of towners walking around the city, hungry and looking for good grub. Accidentally stumbled upon this place and my goodness !! What a blessing it was! First of all, it is so cute in here and surprisingly a big space. I usually love the bar area if I'm solo or a party of two. So naturally we sat the bar. Service and staff were great, super helpful in recommending items and combos. I can't remember what combo we ended up getting but- absolutely delicious!!!! Everything. So good! We were able to share a combo between two of us. And we got a couple of apps; garlic spicy edamame and shishito peppers. I also tried their yuzu wheat ale and oh man so tasty. We did the omakase here and it was terrific! Ambiance was nice, not too crowded. Chef choices were all great. We liked the scallop and the ini so much we got extra at the end. The same was wonderful but alas, I forget the name. It was filtered, cold, and crisp. Seated at the sushi counter, Sushi Junai was a nice little vibe. Very trendy interior, some nice Japanese decor to set the scene. Clean, minimal design. Service from the waitstaff was friendly although the sushi chefs were a little more standoff-ish. It was lunch, so things weren't super busy. Started off with the Candy Cane Roll based on what I saw on Yelp. It was good albeit not quite up there with the top tier of sushi rolls I've tried. The standout on the visit was definitely the Toro Trio - small at just 3 pieces ($18) but very high quality mix of various tunas that almost melt in your mouth. I cannot say enough great things about this neighborhood gem! Ever since we visited, I have been talking about this place nonstop and that is saying a lot, considering that Austin has no shortage of sushi restaurants. Sushi Junai Omakase is one of those places that you expect to pay a lot of money for the quality of fish, but surprisingly, the prices are very reasonable. I love asking for recommendations and we were all very happy and pleased that Sonny Thai was our waitress. She recommended some fabulous dishes: Kanpacchio, spicy garlic edamame, spicy tuna roll, hotate, sake toro, engawa, chu toro, kanpachi, seaweed salad, shrimp tempura, and the negi toro roll. Between 3 people, we all had either 2 glasses of wine each or Sapporo. Our entire bill before tip was $70pp! I just went to Uchi recently and 2 pieces of fish ran about $70! To say Sushi Junai Omakase is a dream is an understatement. The next time we come back, it will be to try the omakase menu. read more

one of the best happy hour places for sushi! weren't there for the first time on friday after getting a friend recommendation and sushi junai didn't disappoint. we didn't have a reservation but the team was able to seat us at the bar which was a great experience because we got to see the chefs make our roles. the place looked and smelled clean. i will say parking is tough since it's all street parking in the middle of downtown but it is worth it! ps. try their hand roll! read more

I love this place!! Their service is incredible and attentive. The inside is beautiful with a cherry blossom tree in the middle of the restaurant. We sat at the bar while we waited for a table which was so cool because we got to see the chef in action right in front of us. Would be a great spot for a date experience. Once we got sat at our booth, we ordered à la carte - rolls, miso, and edamame. Everything was delicious and came out swiftly. I was surprised the prices were so reasonable for being downtown. Found this place on Yelp when craving some good sushi. Maybe the best sushi deal in downtown Austin. Their Happy Hour essentially makes all the sushi half off for about an hour and a half. Super disappointing experience. I've been here before and sat at the bar and had a great experience. This time we were in a booth. The light was out and we could see a lot of boxes and stock supplies across from us. It was a little like eating in a broom closet. I don't suggest it. Staff seemed very uninterested in serving us. Very slow and not attentive at all. I honestly get better service at P Terry's. Food was okay but not fit for an Omakase restaurant. We did not eat omakase, but the name suggests a certain quality that was grievously lacking. Some of the Sashimi Nama were inventive but fell flat. Note to self; don't order sashimi plates that include cheese. The beef was not good at all. Overcooked and tough. The Golden Oysters were over breaded and over cooked. The regular sashimi was fine but nothing special. We had planned to order more but decided to leave. We won't be back. I would not come down so hard if this were a "sushi joint in a strip mall". But it isn't. The management needs to step in here and attend to the supposed jewel of their triad of restaurants. There are plenty of better sushi offerings in Austin. read more

For $150/person, this is way overpriced from every perspective. Fish quality is mediocre, service is okay, and environment is meh. Compared to Sushi by Scratch, Craft, OToko and any other Omakase in ATX which are similarly priced (and BTW include a service fee/tip in their price per person), this is by far the worst. You can always tell food quality by the uni. This stuff was packaged in a plastic container, and the fish was all wrapped in paper towels. It's basically a mediocre sushi restaurant taking advantage of the Omakase trend, but they lack the quality food, chefs, and ambiance. Sorry, maybe worth $75/person but that's pushing it. This inconspicuous little restaurant on Congress Avenue may just have one of the best Sushi Happy Hours in town. I decided to stop by on a Monday evening before a show and was pleasantly surprised by the reasonable prices and high quality of the food. To start, I ordered the spicy salmon roll and the sushi sampler. The nigiri came with unique accompaniments that I had never tried before, such as pesto and truffle. These flavors were so interesting that I didn't even need soy sauce to fully enjoy them. I also tried their signature yellowtail roll, which was incredibly delicious. It had the perfect combination of freshness and crunchiness from the tempura. This was my wife and I's first omakase experience even though we are avid sushi eaters. Our chef was Eddie and he was fantastic! I have no complaints. The food was incredible, the staff was polite and timely with their service, and the atmosphere is a traditional sushi bar that was a good size without feeling like there was too many people. Overall would definitely recommend and return. FYI - I have heard from others parking is nonexistent since it is downtown. Haven't tried the omakase here though that is the selling point. Mostly have had lunch (lunch specials are great and a lot of food). Cuts of nigiri here are fairly sizable - def not the smaller portions you see at Uchi or Soto. So keep that i mind while ordering - you will get full. All the times I've been it's never crowded so seating has been easy even without reservations (though YMMV). I like this as a little hidden downtown gem. read more

At the time we went, it was a little late and close to closing, there were many items unavailable because they were out of stock .Our server was so knowledgeable and helped us with a variety of different flavors and options. High quality sushi. Very pleased with service. The inside is so pretty, I loved the cherry blossoms and the sleek setting.
