It my close to 70 years on planet earth,this is far and away the worst business I have ever dealt with. Cannot even think of a close second. They refused to transfer my funds to Schwab. Guy from Schwab said he had never run across anyone like them. So opened up account with Vanguard. Same thing. Udirect wanted so many I"s dotted and t"s crossed it never got done. I had to transfer the money to my bank,then back to Vanguard to make an indirect transfer. Will be dumping them and saving 1100 dollars a year ASAP. They require excessive and burdensome amounts of paperwork if you want to transfer any money out of your account. Under the guise of 'compliance', it is way more difficult than other firms I've used. Avoid uDirect like the plague! I switched to them a while back but decided to go a different route and move the money to Vanguard. They made it incredibly hard and their customer service was the worst I have ever experienced. The day I finally got the money moved and account closed I said a silent prayer, I think the process took 6 months... And, from my point of view, uDirect did everything they could to make it hard to leave their services. Their online interface is a total joke too. Plenty of better companies out there. The absolute worst financial management services I've ever had to deal with... Do yourself a favor and do thorough research upon other available IRA LLC options before deciding... It feels as though their "security" procedures and protocols are stuck in the late 90's/ early 00's. Anything and everything you do needs wet signatures and to be scanned for them. I'm someone who works remotely and travels often, so having access to a printer/ scanner to manage my account is extremely inconvenient. Secondly, their whole entire team is completely compartmentalized, so be prepared to be forwarded to and deal with everyone in their company for all the different actions planned with your account. Waiting periods for processing are very slow, so don't expect to be able to execute on any time-sensitive investment plans you have. There are fees throughout many different investment actions you need to take, refer here: https://udirectira.com/get-started/fees/ . I honestly just paid $500 to setup and close the acct. At least now I don't have to deal with them. Feel free to look into the other self-directed IRA companies I found to be much more user-friendly, helpful, and affordable. I have to say that uDirect has the best combination of fees and service compared to the other custodians..hands down. I like how accessible and responsive the staff is here and how their fees are simple compared to other in this space. Some SDIRA companies charge fees based on a percentage of the total assets you have with them. They're basically charging like a % commission. uDirect just charges a flat fee. I set up two SIDRAs, one for myself and one for my spouse. I admit i have a hard time understanding the responsibilities of the custodian and uDirect, but i will say that from the beginning i have struggled with uDirect communications and customer service. Today, as i close one of these accounts, i have the same problem. Customer service is poor and seems worse than when the accounts were open. If uDirect was the only vendor, OK. But they are not, and you can do better. UPDATE: when i looked for the above review on line, i saw the business owner's response to a posting i had made in 2018 complaining about the poor customer service. In that reply, essentially, NOTHING that the business owner said addressed my complaints. SO, you can write me off as a malcontent or you can accept my (repeated, essentially identical) complaints, separated by 2 - 1/2 years of experience CAVEAT EMPTOR!! read more

Here is an update on the never ending saga I call, "Transferring out of Udirect". A torturous process no person should have to go through. Selfies holding Photo IDs which must be done and redone to perfection. At just the right angle so their anal retentive custodian will accept it. This even though you also have to provide a photo copy of your photo ID, which was standard, at least when OPENNING an IRA. Then there was that super mysterious "Secure Pin form". I was told it had to be uploaded online as part of the transfer. I asked numerous times "What is it?", and "How do I upload it?". I was ignored, so I emailed Karren (owner). Suddenly I get an email from Kathy telling me this is that attachment Edward sent you days ago. Okay. So I upload it online. Whoops! Apparently, Edward sent the wrong thing, as I was just emailed by Derexa with an attachment of said SPF (Secure pin form). So I just uploaded it. Hope this is the end. Stay tuned....... P.S. I am a client of UDirectIRA for the last 5 years. I have nothing but good things to say regarding self directed IRAs as a different way to invest for retirement. "Having a self-directed IRA really is a blessing. I retired from my previous employer at 50 years of age. It was a forced retirement because the company was restructuring and losing big bucks on some brands one of which I was responsible for. I spent my 20 years with them doing the right stuff. Putting in 15% of my salary towards retirement. But then at 50 I was faced with retiring early. Which was fine with me. But I also made the decision to not go back in corporate structure. I went off to become a realtor. And you know, going from making big bucks and having all the benefits and so forth to becoming self-employed changed my whole brain and security. I remember when I decided to bring $100K to uDirectIRA. As my own IRA was losing money, putting this money into this self-directed IRA made sense for me. It did what I needed. It gave me a monthly boost to an IRA through the rent money. Plus it gave me equity growth. As a self-employed person, it has given me a small glimpse of security into my retirement age. Whenever that will be. Anyway, I think it is not a well-known tool that could make sense for someone who faced the same issues I faced being self-employed. Every time I feel sad that perhaps I am going broke, I look at my account and say....wait I still have this money in this self-directed IRA . Now that I know one of the units directly across from me closed several months ago at $280K, I REALLY feel good about this vehicle of investment." UPDATE to today. My $92,000 investment in an Own Your Own In Long Beach converted to condo last year which increased the value of my investment. In fact, if I were to sell my condo today, I would sell it for $300K. So my investment tripled. PLUS I have the cash from the rents for the last 5 years. Which has been a significant amount. I will be turning 59 1/2 in 5 months. So I could begin to take distributions without paying the 10% penalty just need to pay my taxes on the money I reward. I feel very safe and secure with this investment moving into my 60's. read more
