This theatre has been in existence for 90+ years and is now run as a non profit. I was happy to see they had sponsorship from many of the local businesses. They also host community and special events. They have one movie showing at a time and have limited showtimes compared to the big chain theatres. For movie snacks, they sell popcorn, pretzels, chocolates and locally brewed beer. Staff, like most in Yellow Springs, were very laid back. This is a special place and movie going experience.

Summer is here and they show a new movie each week with free admission to the youth of this community. Admission is cheaper than any other theater in the area. Tuesday is $5 admission on most movies. Everyday has a lower matinee admission price. The popcorn is always fresh. Concession prices are very reasonable. I do not know of any other theater that has cheaper. The theater is always clean. The restrooms are always clean and well stocked. Employees are polite and smile. There is plenty of parking.

On top of that, during recent visits I've noticed the popcorn hasn't been as fresh as it used to be. Between the decline in quality and poor customer service, this experience was really off-putting. The seats are old school, and not horribly uncomfortable but also not amazing leather recliners and loveseats like so many theaters have these days. Walking into this theater and sitting down is like being transported to 2003, which can be fun in its own right. The colors are vibrant, the theater design is liminal and old-school. I actually really like the vibes here. I just wonder why Regal doesn't seem interested in upgrading this theater. It has PRIME real estate, in a rich population high-traffic area. It would make a splash if Regal bought some new reclining chairs and gave the place a good cleaning and makeover, and lowered their concession prices by 25%-30%. Look, I get why attractions in general charge more for concessions, but these prices are hilariously bad. Lowering the prices would result in higher profits because more people would buy more items. It's a no-brainer. The video and audio quality is superb, which is ironic considering the state of the rest of the theater. Probably the best part of the experience is if you see an older or less popular movie, you are likely to have the whole theater to yourself! It's a very fun experience to see a movie on a huge screen with no one else around. Good for the customer, very, very bad for Regal. They need to upgrade the theater or sell to Cinemark or AMC at this point.

I would normally give this location 5 stars, but this morning when I arrived at the theater for an…read more11:30 showing that I had paid for in advance, there were about 15 people standing outside that told me there was no one there and all the doors were locked. So we gave them the benefit of the doubt and waited as another 20 or so people joined us or sat in their cars waiting. Several of us tried to call the theater and didn't even get a recorded message. Some called headquarters in Texas and of course all they could do was look into the matter. Quite a few of us had driven from other towns and would not be able to return for a showing later in the day. I suggest that when they are going to cancel a showing, they at least leave a message on their main number in Piqua and have someone post a sign on the outer doors so people don't just stand there feeling angry or frustrated because the WANT to see that movie. This was Part 3 of THE CHOSEN.

For our visit, they were showing the silent version of The Phantom of the Opera with a live orchestra. This was our first visit to this theater so we got there early to look around. There is a convenient parking garage located directly behind the theater and if you remember to ask, they will validate your parking ticket for $2.00 (we did not remember to do this so we paid $11.50 for three hours!!). They were showing this film on Halloween night, which was also a Friday night, so the University District was hopping! It was fun to walk around and see all of the costumes and various parties going on before heading into see our movie. Since this was a special showing it cost us around $55.00 for our tickets, but we ordered them in advance and were able to pick the seats we wanted. They allowed everyone inside the theater 15 minutes early, so there was quite a long line waiting once we were near the theater door. We saw others carrying soda and popcorn, but couldn't figure out where the concessions stand was! We were barely able to figure out where to find the bathrooms, so we gave up on the popcorn once the door opened for the movie. Once the door was opened, we went in and found our seats. Very comfy seats!!! We sat in the fifth row, so the screen was higher than our seats, but oh so cozy. The show was fantastic, the live orchestra did a smashing job! Very enjoyable visit!!

This time Gateway and the library are offering free "book to film" screenings all summer with your library card. Not too busy on Sunday mornings. Great staff. Basic snacks and drinks, plus alcohol. Good picture and sound. Parking discount at the garage, and on Sundays usually street spots nearby for free.
