What can I say about a bank that I only get loans through? I can tell you why I don't go through my regular bank (Chase) for loans. If you've got decent credit and you need to make a big investment / purchase, the loan people at UFCU will give you an awesome APR. I've worked with them 3 times on different vehicles, so I'm pretty sure it's not a fluke. Maybe everybody else knew about credit unions before I did, but in case you're still jackin around with the dealership's lender, give these guys a call. The day I switched from BofA to UFCU comes just behind my wedding and birth of my first child, in terms of happiness. Well, not really, but it is still one of the best decisions I have ever made. First off, all of UFCU is awesome, especially the customer service which is A+ unlike all the major banks. This location in particular is great, and the people are very helpful. I hate to sound like a commercial, but UFCU has helped me easily with my credit card, debit card, company card and auto loan. 99 out of 100 banks suck. This is that 1 that doesn't. I threw myself over from Wells Fargo to UFCU after I became incredibly frustrated at the ridiculously low interest and small amount of caring at the local Wells Fargo branches. UFCU has been awesome since we transferred our accounts, but I have to point out a few frustrations I have: --again, big checks have a ridiculously long holding period. That's kind of frustrating when switching accounts to UFCU when you need to pay bills! --Safe deposit box waits at the Steck branch are upwards of two years. They're cheap as anything, though! --If you want to open multiple accounts with your spouse, chances are you'll have to open many new accounts and many $5 deposits in savings accounts. My husband and I currently have three separate 'accounts' at UFCU due to our retirement accounts. --There are no sub-accounts in savings. Banking like you've never known it. I'm one of those people who always believed that all banks were not to be trusted and who thought of them as faceless monsters with nefarious intentions. UFCU completely shattered that philosophy and showed me how banking really should be. Joseph Woodruff at the campus location is an incredibly helpful, straightforward and personable banker, he gets back to you promptly and offers every piece of knowledge he has about auto loans, home buying or just basic financial advice. When my credit was upgraded from OK to excellent, a UFCU banker called to notify me of the upgrade and to congratulate me on my success. When I wanted to buy a home, they were right there with honest information, free seminars and personal advice about my capabilities. Be careful with this bank. Review every statement, every charge and add up any interest yourself. On my final month of an auto loan I discovered I still owed over 2500. They had not received my proof of insurance although my insurance agent has verification it was sent. They seem to think they can bypass the laws. read more

Very disappointing I have been with UFCU for over 20+ years. My debit card for some reason stopped working in early November. I called them right away and requested a new card. It is mid-December and I still have not received a replacement debit card. I don't live in Austin anymore and so it is not convenient for me to drive to one of their offices. Every time I call, the bone-heads that manage their debit/credit cards always suggest maybe I should drive 2 hours to Austin. I have called 3 times and I still don't have a card. Next time I am in Austin, I will shutdown my account and empty my safety deposit box and transfer to a real bank. It is so disappointing that UFCU treats a 20+ year customer this way. I've banked with dozens of banks and several credit unions over the years. I'm a USAA member as well. I do my primary banking through UFCU for a reason. Need a loan? A quick phone call and 15 minutes later I'm approved. Online banking does everything my partner and I need and then some. The few times I've needed to call, I've never waited on hold more than two or three minutes and the person who answered was always able to resolve my problem on the first try. I read a lot of reviews, and it seems to me that there's lots of extenuating circumstances (being told that paying for an appraisal would probably get the loan approved is not a guarantee, non-standard employment will cause trouble with ANY bank, etc etc) in the low reviews. I can only tell you my experience - I've had great responsiveness, and the few problems that occurred were usually my fault. They've reversed overdraft fees just because I asked, issued me a line of credit at the drop of a hat, and more. My only complaint would be that there's not a branch closer to my office, and that BMW Financial beat UFCU's interest rate by several points (2.9 vs 6.9) on my car loan. read more

EDIT: I am leaving this up for posterity but I'm changing my rating because they rectified this. The dude I talked to at the Westlake location said that they couldn't help me, and that I would be charged--but the website had links to cancel and resend the check! So that guy was just an asshole, and UFCU treated me right in the long run. Since then I've taken out a Car Loan from them and it went great, and I haven't had any problems with the Guad or Steck locations. Just don't go to the Westlake one! I set up automated check-sending to pay rent, and it was fine for a while but this month the check never made it to my landlord. I wrote a review a couple of weeks ago about poor customer service. Also getting taken advantage of by getting charged an extra $3,000 on my dirt bike loan that I didn't agree to. Called spoke with both managers Lisa and Kevin. Lisa was rude and offered no solutions and Kevin the main manager "apparently". Kevin refused to call me back. The bank also said that in order for them to remove a charge that I didn't agree on that they would take money from other member accounts to pay for this? unbelievable. I have been loyal to them for 7 years and had multiple loans, all been paid on time and in good standings. They used to be great and are still pretty good unless you have to deal with after hours phone center for fraudulent charges. It took days to get my money back and then when one of the businesses disputed my claim even though I don't live in CA and why would I ship something there they took the money back out of my account and I am out $100. Great service. As far as banks go, anyways, I am a fan. I became a member to purchase my car. It was the first car I purchased myself, and I loved the service I received from the loan officer. She helped me purchase, and get a good deal for my car. Any issue I can easily solve via a phone call. My branch is usually very busy, so handling on the phone is sometimes a much quicker way to handle; although, I recently lost my card and went in to a long line. The person taking your name at the greeting desk (not sure what to call it) hooked me up without waiting for someone with an office..which has been my case in the past. I had my account for a week. I opened my app, to pay some bills on Friday evening, and someone opened a $75,000 mortgage under my name, and posted it on my account. I spent an hour trying to reach someone. THERE IS NO ONE TO HELP YOU AFTER HOURS. I called the fraud line. I was treated so poorly by the agent "Maria" - I have never had an experience like this. She snapped at me. "I only cancel card, nothing else" I asked her who to call. "You call on Monday" I called for help after I was locked out of the website, as my log in information was changed. I got a mechanical voice telling me I didn't call from my own phone. No opportunity for another choice. They are not equipped for your business. Then, I found out that all of my information was changed. No one called me to confirm the change. I opened the account because WF was doing shitty stuff. TO OTHER PEOPLE. This is worse than anything they ever did. Closing the account Monday. We all know what a pain it is to change all of your stuff over. They are so nice when you open it. Then you are on your own. Primitive. Like a 1973 bank with an unstable web site. Really? How hard is it to add security and customer service into the mix? read more

The company culture combined with individual great people is what makes this place such an excellent member experience. I have consistently encountered kind, helpful people here who went above and beyond to help me. One helped me to get the right car and went out of her way to give me advice about how to go about car ownership. One helped me to get a loan I needed for my career. Instead of just telling me my application had been denied, she helped me to reapply for a loan that would be more likely to get accepted--and it was! Neither of these people had to do this, but their more-than-average helpfulness made a fairly significant difference in my life. These individuals were great people, but this is also what the company culture encourages and enables. This is what a community credit union should be like. I rarely give five stars. read more

I love me some UFCU. I have never had a bad experience. In fact, they have come through for me many times with ME in mind. They work hard to get the lowest loan rates possible and work with you as to what the best loan is for your needs. Example: My tenants left my rental property a wretched mess. They abandoned the property, so I had the unexpected pox of lost rental income and lots of damage to fix before my property could be marketable. I found out about the abandonment on a Sunday. I really hate to do this because UFCU has not done anything to slight me personally. HOWEVER: Their mobile and web banking experience is completely miserable and they provide terrible customer service hours. No matter what I do, I cannot get logged back in to my online account. I have to reset my password every time. And EVERY TIME I need to speak to someone to fix it, they are closed. Yes, it would behoove me to make a point to schedule a time to call them. BUT. Like everyone, my days are jam packed with the expectations of modern productivity, and the only times I have to do my bills are AFTER work, AFTER my kids go to bed, and sometimes at the end of the weekend on SUNDAYS. How can they not offer phone banking hours outside of M-F 7a-7p and Sat 10-2? How is it possible to operate a bank that large without a generous hotline span? Also! EVERY. TIME. I try to troubleshoot by re-enrolling online that part of the site is down. EVERY. NIGHT. for 2 hours. HOW is that even POSSIBLE? I work for gigantic agency that manages a vastly larger database - which goes down for maintenance about once a month. In the wee hours of the morning. When no one cares. The only way I ever get into my UFCU account is through my phone/touch ID, and I can't even pay any bills from the mobile app. So it is useless too. As soon as my car is paid off - we out. Neither can connect to my Freshbooks online accounting any longer and UFCU keeps blaming freshbooks (It's not Freshbooks). I started going out of my way to utilize this branch about a year ago. My beloved and local Guadalupe location really went out of their way to annoy me and in turn, I came here and spoke to a MSR and not only did he hear me out and agree with me 100% but also insisted that I take his card for any future issues at any other branches. That really made me feel like I was appreciated, given that I've been a member for 9 years and have used many of their products. The drive thru lanes are never crazy long and move really fast. Why doesn't Guadalupe instill whatever systems these guys use? Businesses, when are you going to realize that your customers power your businesses? Great for banking, not so great for mortgages. I've never had a problem with UFCU in regards to my bank accounts. I like their automated service centers as they are convenient and easy. I can recommend them for basic banking services. For new home loans, I would advise looking into other lenders. Not only were they not competitive, they were non-responsive. We have been customers for over 15 years and I would have at least expected a call-back in regards to my mortgage loan application. We had to call to follow up on the application and then were given a non-competitive interest rate despite our near-perfect credit scores. This wasn't our first mortgage either so the lack of interest in our business was really surprising. They were also very restrictive on how much we could borrow (which wasn't commensurate with our debt load nor our income). Very strange. We were able to quickly and easily get a mortgage from a different lender. read more

I'm talking about the loan department. applied for a loan with this incompetent loan department and another credit union at the same time to say which would be better for me. They both use same credit agency. The other credit union ( velocity) approved very fast with very good rate and terms. This one wants to know where the money was going to be used for ($1900) and insinuated that something wasn't right. I'm not sure where they find such people to work for them. Since my last review they have not done any better. I called them to get a maturity date on my vehicle loan 2 different times and i was given two different answers. One of them was that my loan would be paid off 2 years after what they had initially told me. I've been happy with UFCU for the 8+ years I've banked there, but I'm taking the time to write a review because of Linda C., Loan Service Advisor extraordinaire. She did all the normal car loan things as professionally as you would expect, but when things went wonky and the MINI dealership wouldn't allow the usual "bank wires dealership loan $" process, Linda really saved my day. She actually drove back to the bank in the middle of her lunch break to help me (!!). She found a rather glaring mistake on the dealership's paperwork... but instead of making me go back to them to get it fixed, she cut through the red tape to make it as easy and fast as possible for me. And she was smiling and friendly the whole time! While I can't recommend buying a new car on Memorial Day weekend, I highly recommend UFCU's car loan program and their fantastic staff. Oh, and add another 5 stars for the most ridiculously low car loan rate ever. UFCU rocks. read more

If you ever have a problem and have to call in the phone system is extremely misleading. It will not take you to where you think you need to go for help. The person on the other line will apologize then tell you to call back where you get to play "guess which line will help me!" again. Hopefully this one will be the right one! Oops! Nope! Not that one either! Try again! Oh by the way there's no way to reach a rep that will lead to the right spot. I opened an account with them 6 years ago. I've been debating closing it for months. So unhappy with the phone service and the only way to get semi-decent service is to go into a branch and wait and wait and wait until 1 of the 2 people in the store can help you. Insurance Department--Totally Lame Service We have home and auto insurance through them and have consistently (for years) had a hard time getting a hold of someone in the insurance dept when we need them. They don't always return phone calls. Mortgage Department--Disappointing They rejected our mortgage application, but we went on to get funding through a private mortgage company. I make plenty of money and have done, consistently, for years. But my income profile (self-employed, several income streams) didn't fit with UFCU's formula. Disappointing because a credit union is supposed to work for its members, give them the benefit of the doubt, work with them one-on-one. At least that's what the pro-credit union propaganda led me to think. Difficulty Handling Out-of-the-Ordinary Requests I bought car last year out of state and got my loan through UFCU. Buying a car out of state is a huge hassle; I don't recommend it. I wish I could say UFCU supported us beautifully through this process, but they did not. The process required lots of documents to go back and forth between the car dealership and UFCU and myself (getting signatures, payments, etc.) and at one point, for several days, the UFCU agent I was assigned to simply stopped returning my calls or doing any work on my documents! This made the car-buying process take several more days than it would have otherwise. I think it took more than 10 days total. Auto Loan. I was able to buy a car in a matter of hours and never had to go to the bank. We did the whole thing online - I even signed the documents on my cell phone. It was a beyond amazing experience. I cant begin to express how happy I am with the service I received and how great the guys there are. Randy Elliott was my loan officer and he was always super pleasant and responsive, as was his processor, Tammy. Process was quick and easy, and a great rate on top of it all. Instead, I was seen almost immediately, accomplished what I was there to do and left in less than 15 minutes! Now I have gotten a situation where I am temporarily living outside of Texas, and I have been trying to get a replacement debit card FOR THREE MONTHS. I get my account statements every month, yet they are seemingly unable to deliver me a replacement card. I give up. I'll be transferring my account to another credit union.
