Food was decent, but the experience missed the mark. I really wanted to like this place because the menu sounded promising and I'm always excited to try new places. Unfortunately, the service and overall experience made this visit more frustrating than enjoyable. The ordering system relies on large self-serve screens which would be fine if the interface were clear. Several items weren't explained well, and it was hard to tell exactly what I was selecting. I tried to get assistance, but the staff member on duty had headphones in and was watching something on his phone. Even after waving to get his attention, he didn't notice. When my food finally came out, it was delivered to the wrong table before making it's way back to me. The food isn't bad but it's more of a fast food style and I wish it were fresh. Overall, I won't be rushing back. Not because of the food but because the service and ordering process made the visit more stressful than it needed to be. read more

We ordered at the front counter and the young man explained our options. We both ordered the Sampler (5 different bao buns). They were good, but missing the pork/crab. To make up for it, our sever, Maggie, got us both a couple to go. We both ordered flavored drinks. I got the Thai ice tea-- I love Thai ice tea, but I was disappointed. My sister got the Mango Snow- SO GOOD. A customer recommended we try the Biscoff cream. Sis found it too sweet and I found it good and sweet. It's not on the menu behind the counter, but they'll know what you mean. You should try it. Everyone was very nice and accommodating. The restaurant is clean and well-lit with booths and tables. My friends and I came here for some soup dumplings. I've been wanting to try it for a while, and I was a bit disappointed. The dumplings were okay, but nothing like the real thing I'm used to. For soup dumplings, there wasn't even any broth inside them. The chicken bites were really good, probably the best thing we had. I probably won't be rushing back anytime soon; there are better options out there. It took 25-30 minutes for my table of four to get all of our items ordered. We got truffles and pork/shrimps/spinach soup dumpings: the wraps were soft and tender, the fillings were soft, juicy; and the flavors well balanced. The stir fried noodles were tender and plum, the popcorn chicken bites were super crispy; and the flavors are not overwhelming which leave room to add flavors with chiili sauce, soy sauce; and vinegar. Last week after grocery shopping, my husband and I stopped by UDX (Ugly Dumpling Express) in Springfield for lunch. The food was honestly fresh and flavorful especially the Fried Rice, which was perfectly cooked and came in a good portion. The chicken dumplings were soft with a light crisp, really tasty overall. But yeah... the service was quite slow! We had to wait for about 30 minutes even though it wasn't that crowded. We paid our first visit to Ugly Dumpling yesterday and we were happy with our sojourn here. Even today I am still thinking about the great flavors. You can order either with somebody at the checkstand or on one of the three self-serve kiosks. While the restaurant name contains "Dumpling" there is also chicken fried rice, noodles, steamed buns, shumai plus a lot more. There's even two kinds of vegetable dishes, i.e. the the cucumber salad and the string beans. Whatever you order, I do recommend you at least order the spicy chicken pork and shrimp wontons. If spicy foods scare you sway, don't worry, these wontons are not spicy. These wontons are soft and are served in an absolutely delightful and delicious chili sauce. You can use this chili sauce as very nice dipping sauce for your other items. Besides the wontons, we ordered: - Pork and shrimp shumai: firmer than your typical shumai and exceptionally delicious. My favorite dish of the day. - Braised Beef Noodle Soup: good with a light hint of five spice. - Spring rolls: just okay. - Pork Soup dumplings - the filling's flavor was just fair but the soup broth in the dumpling was fine. It's unfortunate that Ugly Dumpling only provides plastic disposable silverware for dine-in. More specifically, they need to offer dumpling soup spoons, so you can fully enjoy the experience of eating a soup dumpling. But having said that, we will be back. read more

My husband and I were visiting the Alexandria area and he really wanted to try some dumplings so we found Ugly Dumpling Express. When we walked in we were greeted so nicely and the young man working in the front area was so helpful. He gave suggestions and was friendly the entire time, which I can appreciate. We ordered the chicken stir-friend noodles, popcorn chicken, and the ud dumpling sampler. All tasted very good! I would have liked the popcorn chicken to come with a side of sauce to dip it in. Three of us came here for lunch last week. I left my phone in the car, so I didn't take any pictures. We ordered soup pork dumplings, braised beef noodle soup, shrimp stir-fried noodles, and orange chicken. Unfortunately, we didn't get the soup dumplings -- they gave us regular pork dumplings instead. When I asked the cashier about the mix-up, he wasn't willing to change it. The pork dumplings were just okay, and I think they still charged us the same price as the soup dumplings. The beef in the braised beef noodle soup was tender, and the broth was flavorful, but the portion was small for $14. We didn't like the stir-fried noodles -- the noodles were too mushy. We did enjoy the orange chicken; it was tasty and well-prepared. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. The food was just okay, portions were small, and the prices were on the higher side. I did an order ahead and to be frank I was estatic that my order was ready to go when I got there! They had no line, nor was it busy. It just took a while for someone to actually come out to tend and give me my order. I just didn't want to snatched the order even though I saw it. I got shumai, chili wontons, and short rib noodles soup. All were pretty tasty. The only one i probably wouldn't get again were the wontons, the insides weren't that great. Staff were really friendly. The space is well designed and spacious inside! I also like option to order via the kiosks. However, I didn't enjoy the pork soup dumplings or the sampler. Unfortunately, most of them were popped and had no soup on the inside (I tackled these first before the other items in my combo). I am a big soup dumpling afionado, but the flavors of the filling were a miss for me. While I think the prices are fair and the combos offer a decent amount of food, I won't go back. read more

Stopped here for a quick bite on a Saturday afternoon. First impressions: bright, modern, clean restaurant. Very friendly service, they have a couple of big iPads for ordering for first time diners, it makes it easier since it shows pictures of the food items. Lots of options to choose from: dumplings, fried rice, noodles, wontons etc. favorites: the fried chicken with pork was bomb! So so good, it came with vinegar and ginger which added a nice touch. The pork, shrimp and chicken spicy wontons were good but not amazing. And lastly, I was a bit disappointed about the UD soup dumpling sampler. Didn't love all of them, but there were a couple of favorites: the green one and the yellow one. Overall a pretty decent meal at a great price. Friendly service and clean space. Came here for lunch with a friend and enjoyed my food and boba! The newly opened Ugly Dumpling Express is a well designed establishment that has great options. Think of it as a cheaper Din Tai Fung alternative :) I got the Chicken Fried Rice and Green Tea - very filling a nice portion size. Loved how the fried rice had large pieces of chicken and spring onions. The tea was flavorful and not too sweet, just how I like it! My friend got the Chicken Fried Noodles/Orange Chicken - all very tasty and not too salty. The pricing is decent, but a little more expensive than I anticipated. The service was speedy and very accommodating to all questions I had. The ambiance is clean, sleek, and trendy! Overall, would come back to try more dishes and teas! read more

The food was decent. Would return again. This is an order and find your own seat type of place. Upon walking in, you don't see the kiosks to order that are around the corner. Didn't have any issues with the staff at the counter, just have a preference for viewing from a kiosk if it's available to see all the ordering options. One or two of the soup dumplings were already open while in the steam basket. One or two soup dumplings were a little stuck when trying to pick them up. It happens, they were still tasty. The fried rice was decent, a little splash of soy sauce brought it to the next level. The popcorn chicken was good. Paper plates and utensils were available by the drink station. Paper plates and a regular plastic spoon is not ideal for soup dumplings. Wish they had soup spoons at least. There is vinegar and soy sauce available at the table. The bottles were a bit dirty, one of the bottles was so stuck to the tray it was very difficult to remove from the tray....we swapped the tray of sauces from another table that was a bit cleaner...wish they had some ginger to go with the soup dumplings. I feel torn. I want to REALLY like this. It's in a great location and who doesn't want dumplings. It could be great, but misses the mark. It is new, clean, and bright. It sits on a nice corner of the shopping center. We got a bunch of different soup dumplings to try. We mainly wanted to try the XLB, but got some pork buns too. The skin wasn't so tender and not quite the right consistency. The basic pork were the ones we liked the best. The pork buns were just ok. They tasted like frozen ones from the grocery store. For the price of the dumplings I feel there are better spots in the area with table service. I am not sure if we went on an off day or if this is how it always is. read more

My brother and I visit during the evening (8:30p) and surprisingly as we walk in, all the chairs in the dining room were stacked on top of the tables except the booths. There weren't any staff in the front. One of the customers actually directed us to the kiosk for ordering. In order to use the restroom, you needed a key. The restaurant was located on Backlick Rd in a strip mall with other businesses such as Taco Bamba, Outback Steakhouse. After ordering, we waited in booth 12 along with another family in booth 10 who was also dining in. We ordered 4 items: 1) Chicken soup dumplings 2) Pork soup dumplings 3) Noodles with sesame sauce 4) BBQ pork buns. Once the food arrive to the table, delivered by a young lady directly from the kitchen. She provided chopsticks and paper plates. Be careful with your bite of soup dumplings, it's piping hot. But if you don't eat quickly enough the dumplings will start to stick on the bottom of parchment paper. Then the bottom of the dough will rip and pours all of the broth out. The pork buns were fluffy, mochi-like and very flavorful. The noodles with sesame sauce was tasteless and only taste oil. It was garnish with green onions and stale chopped peanuts. We added some chili oil but it was missing another element. Possibly they were short staff because we only saw 2 people working. I will make return visit to try more items on the menu in the near future. read more

I don't get to that part of Springfield very often, but when I was at the Bundt cake store across the street, they peaked my curiosity! I decided to order delivery from there. I got the dumpling sampler, the green beans and the chicken fried rice. The dumpling sampler was great, except for I didn't care for the black one. Whatever they used to color the dough I didn't care for that. Kind of like using squid, color pasta, I don't like that either. But the fillings were amazing! The green beans are ridiculous! I could not get enough of them and I could eat them every day! The chicken fried rice is vastly different from any place I've ever seen. It's definitely not the normal chicken fried rice. It's not full of soy sauce or MSG, it's actually quite bland to be honest. But we doctored it up with some low sodium spices that we had at home And it was delicious. After waiting a long time we asked to just cancel our order so we could go somewhere else to eat but the lone front employee said he wasn't able to process refunds and there was nobody in store that could do it either. Soup dumplings came out mostly punctured and lacking soup. No utensils were given with food and I had to ask for them. Water cups not readily available, soda machine not functioning, and I had to grab a stack of what were probably someone else's leftover napkins from another table. After all that it just makes me doubly pissed at these systems that make us pre-tip. read more

Wow, this place has really tasty dumplings! My husband and I each ordered a different flavor of soup dumplings, wonton soup, and spicy wontons. Everything we ordered tasted so good and the pricing seemed reasonable. It's really nice to have a fast-casual dumpling place -- such a cool concept! The interiors of the restaurant feel elevated for a fast-casual place. They have seasonal drinks also, such as a pumpkin spice blended boba (like a frappuccino). Quite surprised with how yummy the soup dumplings were when we did take out. Usually I prefer to eat this type of food fresh at the restaurant but we were unable to. The flavor was good, the dumpling shells had a good consistency - not too thick or thin and held the meat in well. The flavor of the meet in our various dumplings were good. My steamed roast pork buns were decent - not super chunky or as robust as if you got them from an old school bakery in Chinatown but they were decent. I'll probably focus on the soup dumplings more next time. The chicken fried rice was good- now this is a matter of preference. I love my fried rice with NO soy sauce so if you're looking for a heavy salty soy'd up rice, then this is not for you. I however enjoy my fried rice with a simple, scallions and egg (& for the love of all that is good and holy - NO PEAS & CARROTS!) So I was super happy with UDX's version of fried rice. I am OCD to a fault. I was greeted by 2 very friendly staff. They were very helpful and made suggestions when I asked. I got the combo pork soup dumplings with 2 egg rolls and the fried rice, with a soda to go. The dumplings were just enough. Very flavorful. The rice was a nice serving and had good flavor. The egg rolls were just okay. The rolls were cold by the time I got home. I was also given several sauces that I used with the rice and dumplings to enhance, not overpower the taste. The food was not greasy or dripping in oil like a lot of places. All in all, I will try it again but stay to eat in. Great location/parking is a mess. Not their fault. read more
