I was searching for a few foundation makeup products and found a Harper's Bazaar article about the most affordable & effective foundation products that are used by professional makeup artists. The links they provided were with Ulta and Target. When I looked online for availability Ulta had everything in stock at my Charlottesville store. So I was able to go in and verify the tones I needed for my skin. I needed a better opinion for some close choices and even though the makeup consultant folks were gone for the day (7pm) one of the cashier's was happy to go over to one of the well lit stations and give me excellent advice listening to my needs. I haven't worn foundation or concealer for years because in my career & lifestyle it's not needed. She understood and I am very happy with the e.l.f. products doing exactly what I need. This company engages in aggressive personal data collection. My wife purchased some items and was told her phone number was required for "fraud prevention". She declined to provide the personal data. The clerk even said we could not cancel the sale in the moment without providing the data. A manager came by and pointed to a sign on the wall with company policy (in small print legalese). In this age of AI it is increasingly important to protect your data where you can. These companies now have data collection and selling that data as a valuable business practice. Be careful and avoid ULTA. read more

Every time I get my hair done here I am happy. However, I want to mention that at one time I had my hair done and decided to go shopping for makeup before I checked out. After about 15 minutes a lady came up to me, in a suspicious manner and asked me if I was going to pay for my hair services and that I needed to hurry and do it. I just put the makeup back and paid and left. They missed out on a sale of beauty products and I felt really devalued after spending so much on hair services and then rushed out of there. If they want people to pay for their hair services quickly they should allow us to check out immediately in the back? Why would I think to go pay for my hair at the front counter and then go shopping for make up? I read in the news that around the same time some lady was arrested for shoplifting and it turned out she didn't do it. They falsley arrested her. I assume that shoplifting is a problem at this store, but I suggest not treating all your customers like they are suspects. read more

Pretty crappy the extent to try and fool customers. Many items with large clearance stickers cover the actual price that is the same exact price! They put a clearance sticker without changing the price even a penny. Many people will get an item this way believing they are getting a deal but ulta is just playing you. Most everything in the stores way over priced, it's annoying how some items are in multiple areas. Like the nail stuff is in 3 different areas of the store . Most of the items I buy at ulta you actually can get at Kroger and other stores cheaper I just occasionally want something to try and can order anywhere but hit ulta at times to avoid shipping and being able to see the item and it's next to the Kroger I shop so I don't go out of my way , but I really just need to stop ulta all together being it seems it's never really a pleasant experience read more

With the styling salon the experience I had here was really below the bar versus the experience I had at another Ulta. With no one to check me in, then waiting 10 minutes to get seated my time there did not get better. The stylist I had was silent the entire time. She did not ask for any reference photos to what I would like only until the very point which defeats the point when asking at the end. Appeared annoyed as I asked for slight modifications and changes on the volume of my hair. As well she pulled my hair to the point of pain multiple times. Checking out was an additional 15 more minutes as they could not ring up the blowout in the system properly when I was the only one in line. No apologies except for the front workers who explained that she's their only stylist on this given day. Long story short: Think twice before you book here. Do you have extra time? You know how every time you walk into any type of beauty store, you are bombarded with sales associates? Sometimes you even have to shoo them off when you've repeatedly and politely declined all offers for help. Not at this Ulta. They go so far as to go the complete opposite route. I spent 30 minutes in the store without a single employee so much as glancing in my direction. I am not a usual at this location, nor am I a beauty guru. I was actually hoping for some help during my visit this evening. Oh well, I figured it out but ended up not leaving with the product I intended to purchase. To top it off, once I got to the register I waited there for several minutes while 4 employees chatted socially behind the counter. Not a hello, not a smile, not a "someone will be right with you", nothing. And then Sabina. I paid for my item with a $10 + $20 bill. She proceeded to dramatically pull out the counterfeit pen and drag it across the length of both bills. Either Ulta has a problem with fake currency, or this chick has a stick up her bum. When have you EVER seen someone check a $10 bill? I'm honestly not sure if this was hilarious or offensive. Next time I'll stick with ordering online. read more

Buyer beware. This is my second visit in a month and I've left feeling swindled each time. First time I purchased $25 in Ulta brand products and stood in line for 25 minutes while a new employee learned the system. Then, I was told that they were out of the much advertised free gift. No rain check no nothing. Talked to the manager about wasting over an hour selecting the products and standing in line-- on a Sunday morning in October--nothing. This Sunday morning I purchased KISS impress nails advertised as on sale for $5. Got to the counter and was told that the sales prices was only for the "original" nails, not the type that I bought. This distinction appeared no where in the signage. Of course, they were out of stock on the original nails on sale. This violates truth in advertising and is a classic bait and switch tactic. It's important to be yourself and not be bitched at. I didn't grab a basket or bag and I was carrying a few small items while waiting on line. Some grumpy clerk behind the register treated me in a judgmental fashion bc her customer she was assisting ran back to the Clinique area to grab an extra item. I'm an aware customer. I was paying attention. The register clerk acted like me putting my items down on the counter meant I was approaching her to check out, I wasn't. Her attitude was rude and her tone was bitchy telling me, " I'm assisting someone else right now ". Get over yourself. People who work in beauty retail stores cop this Im too cool for school attitude. It's kind of old and tiresome. Wasn't too pleased w my Ulta experience this evening. read more

Beware, the staff is extremely unhelpful and definitely attitude or either unattentive. I bought a flat iron, returned it in 11 days (unused) and was TOLD that it could not be credited back to my original payment form because of the number of days I had kept it. They issued a store credit. Their policy is 60 days for returns going back to original payment form. I see on INDEED that they are looking for a new store manager. Hopefully, they might focus on customer service instead of attitude. I have complained about this incident to customer service and verified that it should have been credited back to my original credit card. I would not trust the staff now even with a suggestion. It has been bumped up the scale to their internal corporate managers now. I have many things to say about the staff - unfortunately none are pleasant. Only one associate at the front was helpful. Booked an appointment for a blowout with Irene. Get to the appointment and she says "I'm running WAY behind" and acts like it's an inconvenience for her that I showed up for my appointment. Said it would be about 20 minutes late - no problem. Come back 20 minutes later, still nowhere close to being available. Fast forward an hour later. I ask how long it would take for my appointment and her response was "well I don't know, I don't know how long your hair is..". Moral of the story, extremely rude staff. It was shocking how she acted like it was my fault that I showed up and expected my appointment to be on time... read more

On Saturday March 18th I went to Ulta. I was looking for a specific product, I'm pretty self reliant so I walked around the store a couple times, each time passing employees very involved in their conversation with each other. I finally got tired of trying to get their attention, even saying to my husband, "we'll find it", loud enough for them to hear. I certainly heard them loud enough to know who which of them doesn't like Gatorade. So I finally interrupted them and politely asked where I could locate the product that I was had been searching. I was told "over there" and given a gesture towards the other side of the store. Finally found what I was looking for without assistance. While paying for my purchase, I made a comment about the lack of help for the floor and the lack of assistance I received from those 2 employees, and pointed them out. This is a good store to have if you need a temporary solution to a beauty problem. Let me give you an example. I went to a well-known salon in town for eyebrow threading, and their junior stylist butchered my full eyebrows. Thank heavens, there's Ulta! I was able to purchase ABH Brow Wiz and Keranique to assist growing my eyebrows again. Why 3 stars? Most of the time, I already know what I'm looking for. I check the website to see if the things I need are in stock in store. So, I really looked forward to getting to the store, only to be cornered by two associates. So I told them what I needed. They said they have not heard of the product and led me all over the store's shelves. They kept insisting they haven't heard of the product. I told them I checked on line, it shows the item is in stock in their store. 15 minutes gone in my life... I would have been better off looking for the item myself. Anyway, I found the item I was looking for. So, set your standards low, just rely on your own research and instincts, stick to your mission when you are looking for something here. I would have left if I believed their associates that they didn't have what I'm looking for. It seems like a major theme in most stores here because they can't be bothered to look. read more

I had an online order to pick-up which consisted of just one item so over 1 and a half-hour later I went to Ulta and when I told the manager with blond short hair who was at the front that I was here for a pick-up, she rudely said that she's busy right now with a customer, which is fine, but then she continued to be rude to me. She told me it takes time for the system to process the online pick-up so I have to wait 4 hours, for an item that was literally right there on the shelf that I could've just grabbed myself. This store had barely any customers on a Saturday afternoon yet it takes 4 hours to take one item off the shelf? Then she rudely huffed over to the shelf and brought it back which only took 1 minute and handed it to me, so clearly it does not take 4 hours and she just did not want to do it. However, she was very polite and kind to the white female customer right before me. read more

It's been a few months since the incident, but earlier this year I went and I wanted to have my hair lightened from brunette to blonde. For starters, instead of giving me highlights only, she gave me an all over dye THAT WAS DARKER THAN MY NATURAL COLOR that I came in with and then she gave me blonde streaks throughout it that ended up turning GREY! It was so disappointing to say the least. The girls in the saloon had to talk to one another the entire time to figure out what to do with my hair. It's not like they were even messing with dyed hair-- my hair was all natural at that point. I just wanted to go lighter and ended up going darker somehow with some random grey streaks. It was so bad. What a horrible first dye experience. I called the next day to see if I could get a refund since I got nothing like What I asked for or showed pictures of. Of course they wouldn't give me a cent back. I definitely recommend you visit a real saloon and spend your money there. It cost me $300 at ultra after a tip I felt like I had to give--it then cost me $280 at a real saloon to have my hair fixed and redone and they did 100X better of a job. If you just want a few inches off your hair maybe go to ultra. But otherwise don't waste your time or money. read more

I recently visited this store with my mother and needless to say, my experience was...interesting. The women at the cash registers were pleasant but one of the sales women on the floor was anything but. My mother asked someone if she could get matched for a particular foundation, the sales woman responded "We highly discourage people with fair skin to wear this brand- it makes them look yellow". My mother looked at me and then said "well my daughter wears this brand and I like how it looks on her". The sales woman then looked at me and asked me if I was wearing it now, I told her yes. She then said, "Yeah, I see its yellow around your neck".... She then took my mother to the Lancôme section, pointed to the foundation, told her to try it on, and walked away. She never approached us again during our visit. So yes, ultimately a sale was lost. My mother walked out empty handed. I love Ulta, but customer service was lacking in certain departments. read more

This is regarding their customer service ... or lack thereof. I was in there a week ago and spent over $100 on stuff (curling iron, bare minerals, body wash, OPI nail polish and a Stila eyeshadow). The next monday while I was applying the shadow I dropped it and it shattered on the floor. I was sad and posted a sad little picture on my facebook news feed. A very generous friend saw how much this bummed me out and as a surprise went to Ulta and attempted to replace it. He wasn't 100% sure which one I had purchased and with the help of the salesgirl, he bought a 3-pack shadow and not the individual shadow trio I had originally purchased. I didn't want to tell him it wasn't the same but no biggie, I'll exchange it at Ulta where he got it. Ha! Not so fast. I went into Ulta and explained my story and the girl behind the counter said, "oh yes I remember him -- I sold him the new one" I explained to her that it was the wrong one and that the colors he got me were not right for my skin type. She got the manager to do the exchange and it turns out THEY DO NOT ACCEPT EXCHANGES w/o A RECEIPT!!! What?! I just want to trade and pay the difference in price -- they would actually make money on this deal. Nope. She told me it's because their registers are too old to process this transaction (um, do it by hand?!) She pointed me to their "return" policy which says nothing about exchanges and when I ask, "So you are willing to lose me as a customer and not make a sale here?" she said YES!! Wow. My advice - don't stray from Sephora!! *******UPDATE********* Called Ulta customer service who was shocked at my experience, called the store immediately and had be go back and complete the exchange. The girl wipped out a little laminated sprial notebook on how to do these kinds of exchanges, I paid them the $6 difference in price and it was done in 3 mins. I asked her if this could have just been done in the first place and she said humbly... Yes. wtf. Ulta called me back and offered me a $20 gift certificate to not leave them. read more

I went to Ulta to get a haircut. First of all, I tend to decide to get a haircut spur of the moment and need to get it done before I changed my mind. I called every salon in town and they all were booked, but Ulta got me right in. That was great. Second, I was scheduled with Amy. Now, call me crazy, but that hour where you're sitting with a complete stranger can sometimes be awkward. Not with Amy. She is a great conversationalist, and the experience of having my hair cut was way better than any other experience I've had. Amy was like an instant friend. Third, Amy looked at the photos I showed her of what I wanted, then described exactly what she was going to do and why she was going to do it. I have a TON of hair, and she didn't take any shortcuts. The haircut turned out fabulous and when I tried to style it myself, it looked just as good. I can't rate the other hair stylists, but Amy is a gem! read more

STORE-3.5 STARS I have been to this location both for the salon and to purchase cosmetics. When I first moved here last year, they were always out of my mascara. When I tried to call to check if it was in stock before making the trip, my phone calls most often went unanswered. As of late, they've had my makeup in stock most times that I've gone in. The customer service is hit or miss with overly friendly staff sometimes and others icy cold. SALON- 2 STARS I recently got my hair cut at the salon. I had received a new customer promo postcard in the mail, and when I scheduled my appointment over the phone, I told the person about it. She told me that they didn't have a promo like that currently and was almost argumentative about it. I brought the postcard with me, and they did honor it, but the woman's behavior on the phone was forceful and unprofessional. I can't remember the name of the stylist who cut my hair, but at first she was friendly and talkative but then got quiet and almost seemed upset. Another person stopped by the salon in the middle of my cut, and she went to go talk to her. As she was finishing up, I asked if she could blow dry my hair straight, and she told me that she had just told the other person she could be with them in fifteen minutes. That other person was a walk-in, and I had made an appointment and was in the middle of my service. Although she did blow dry my hair, I felt uncomfortable and like I was being a bother. My cut was decent, and the price was very affordable. I just wish there would have been more professional and better service. read more

Returned to this store recently to replace my facial exfoliator product, which is never cheap. Given the cost of these products I always try to find something quality. I was directed to the Clinique associate after almost fainting at the prices for the dermatalogica line. She gave me a good consultation that addressed my specific skin care needs. I ended up walking out with awesome, more reasonably priced, products that have been effective for my skincare routine. I used to swear by Sephora, but this Ulta store has really stolen me over. I am leaving this rating in regards to the gel nails. Unfortunately, I had my nails done and had the gel come off the next day. I went back the following day and the ladies were helpful and were willing to fix them on the spot without additional cost. However, more gel came off the day after! This was my first experience with OPI gel, so maybe it's common for the paint to come off so fast. I wish my eperience was better because everyone in the salon is so friendly and helpful. read more

I've been looking for a go to stylist since moving here, and can't recommend Rochele enough. I've begun getting greys and have done at home processing to compensate; she was able to match and even out my amateur color seemingly effortlessly. She was able to not only give me a cut to make my hair look more voluminous overall, but had a great knowledge of what products would get me to a few different and easy to style looks. I had an appointment in the salon with Rachael for a haircut and style. She was absolutely wonderful! I told her what I wanted, and we discussed how to make my new look work for me. She even gave me styling tips since I was changing up my look. She asked me before using styling products, which I really appreciated, and not everyone would do. I told her which products I use at home, and she gave me tips on how to use them with my new style. She also gave me some samples of products to try at home, which I LOVE. It gives me the opportunity to try things out before committing to purchase. In addition to being a fantastic and knowledgable stylist, she was extremely sweet. She complimented me on everything from my hair color and texture to the sweater I was wearing. We chatted the whole time she worked, so there was no awkward moments, and she made it a point to ask about me and my life, so the conversation felt natural. It was like talking to an old friend. I will definitely be back to this Ulta salon, and I will make sure my appointment is with Rachael. It was a great experience, and I will be recommending her to my friends! read more

Worst haircut I have ever gotten. My hair is thin to begin with. I told my stylist I was wary of layers and asked for a trim. Instead, she took artistic liberty with my hair and cut extremely awkward layers into it. Oh, and I was charged $10 more than what they originally told me it would cost. 10 weeks later and I'm still incredibly unhappy. I need to cut the layers off and start over. I hate it because unless you are dressed up the ladies in the cosmetic section snub their noses at you. Every Ulta is the same way. I've been here several times now. The woman who typically works the register is very friendly. I'm writing a review because the sales woman who helped me was terrible, and the cleanliness of this store freaks me out. The woman who helped me pick a lip color was clearly just trying to sell her product (Lancome) instead of genuinely wanting to help me find a color regardless of brand that I liked. which I understand but come on, at least pretend like you're interested in the customer. Also, she smelled STRONGLY of cigarettes. Like I don't even think she washed her hands after her last smoke. And she was talking to me about her hair while applying the color and I could smell the cigarettes on her breath too. UGH SO GROSS. Also, I don't care about your hair. Afterward, she kept asking me if I wanted to come to some event the following week to get make up done etc, I don't even know because I stopped listening as she kept asking me to come and I wanted to get away from the smell. She wouldn't take no for an answer so I told her I'd call later about it. Second, the testers are all gross at this store. And the stations that have q-tips, cotton balls, and tissues, etc., are always *VERY* dirty, as if they haven't been cleaned in the past week at least. Definitely do not touch anything there during flu season. And usually the supplies (cotton balls, etc.) are empty. I've never seen that at a Sephora or my old Ulta. The least they could do is keep it clean even if they don't want to restock the supplies for some reason. Overall, I'd avoid this place despite the nice woman at the register. TL;DR - Get anyone but Heather if you're getting a haircut, unless you just want straight or choppily layered hair. There were about six stylists when I went, so I don't know if there were others, but the other five had decent skills. I think that half the hair stylists are good, and it really all comes down to who you get. To be blunt: I got a shitty salon haircut. I'm glad that the money I spent goes to Breast Cancer, but I regret being a nice person and giving as much tip as I did. I shouldn't have given any and given a bigger donation instead. I asked for "lightly layered like my current hairstyle." Granted, I got my hair washed, so my hair was wet. However, it should be pretty obvious how my hair looked before in terms of slight layering since when you cut, you SEE the different lengths. But no, the woman I got (Heather, remember her name so you can ask for anyone but her) cuts it choppy, with two different layers. If I were to look at myself from five feet away, I would see straight hair. Completely straight hair. There is no feathering, thinning, lightly layering. It's completely choppy, and I hate it like no tomorrow. I tried to tell her (twice!) what I meant by LAYERED, but apparently she can't do that. This is not a review stating how bad the salon is; I think they were all good people, just that Heather couldn't cut hair. My friend got a haircut the same day as me, and at relatively the same time, and she got a wonderful hair stylist. My advice to you is to ask for anyone but Heather, and you will be satisfied (I loved my friend's results.) In conclusion, I'm completely unsatisfied. I might as well have asked one of my friends or my parents to cut my hair straight across--- it would have looked better. read more

This review is for the haircut/style I got from Jaxx. Wow is the only word I have for the wonderful experience I had at the Salon at ULTA. I was able to get a free haircut with my points---on another note, I would like to point out that I really have not bought that much at ULTA (perhaps $300) so being able to get something actually sizable was a nice surprise and another reason to love ULTA as a store so much. I was a little hesitant to get a cut from a new salon, and I was worried that ULTA's salon had little expertise and just piggybacked on its reputation as a cosmetics store. Boy, was I wrong! The experience I had was comparable to that of an upscale salon. I'll start with my arrival: I was greeted kindly and then Jaxx came and met me. We went back and I was pleased to see the salon was very clean and organized. She sat me down in her chair and looked at the pictures I provided, listened carefully to what I wanted, and gave me some input. This simple step is so often skipped over, so I was happy that Jaxx took the time to understand what I wanted. Then I was amazed with the wonderful wash I received! Before starting, Jaxx gave me a luxurious scalp massage (a step that none of the other stylists do, so be sure to ask for Jaxx!). Then she shampooed my hair and gave me a treatment that she left in for five to ten minutes--no charge!-- before conditioning my hair. It is so nice to get this treatment without being gouged another $10-15. My haircut was great. Exactly what I asked for. Jaxx took the time to get everything right and did a wonderful job. She also styled my hair beautifully and offered some pointers on doing it myself. Another bonus--she did not try to sell me any products, which I found very surprising, especially since my cut was free. The only thing I feel I should mention with my recommendation, is that I have very "normal" hair---longish but not overly long, not too thick or thin, not curly or textured. My requests were also fairly simple--a basic cut with layers that adds some volume and depth. No color, no perm, no highlights. That is not to say that I question Jaxx's ability to provide great results to clients with different requests. I have been dissatisfied many times with the lack of skill other stylists have shown (often at more expensive salons) so I firmly believe in Jaxx's abilities. Although I cannot personally vouch for her skills as a colorist or in dealing with more difficult hair or complicated requests, I can say with certainty that she is very well trained and takes the time to really understand what you want and give it to you. There was no rushing, no answering the phone every five minutes, no skipping steps. Jaxx is a young stylist but was clearly well trained, and I am just so happy I was lucky enough to find her! And the price is just the icing on the cake. Honestly, I would pay $100 or more to have her cut my hair, and the cut is only $45 (and with points, or the many discounts ULTA offers, cheaper than that or even free!) Bottom line: the cut was fantastic. Just what I wanted and expertly done. And the luxurious experience and impecable service provided did not match the price. The atmosphere and pampering were comparable to a very high end salon's haircut. 5+++ stars. Well done. Jaxx!!! read more

Awful experience getting a gel "manicure" done recently. They were the same price as most places will give a manicure, but all they do is give a polish. The girl wasn't careful and painted way outside the lines of my nails which would be okay with regular polish but with gel just means it doesn't stick down. It started peeling off after one day and a week later looks so bad I have to get them redone. I filled out the survey on my receipt but they didn't respond at all to my complaints.
