We had an appointment for my son with Elite Stylist, Shay M. We were early for our appointment and Shay was running late with the client ahead of us. My husband approached the counter and asked for a status on his cut. Unbeknownst to us, her subsequent appointment arrived early. Shay approached us and let us know she was sorry her current appointment was running late and because her next appointment had arrived, she had arranged for another stylist to cut my son's hair. She failed to ask us more about the circumstance of our appointment. We had made the appointment weeks early, maybe as much as a month, to see her because she is an Elite Stylist and we wanted his hair cut by her as we understood she is experienced with curly hair. We drove about 40 minutes to see her. We were referred to another stylist with less experience in cutting hair, i.e. not an Elite Stylist. We sat adjacent to Shay's next appointment. I was disappointed to witness Shay carried an entire conversation with her, and much of the time she was not actively working on her hair, but conversating. Long story short, we were snubbed by someone with poor time management and ineffective customer service. In my opinion, to carry the title of Elite Stylist, the qualification should go beyond the service and include the other skills that would align with the experience promised by the Ulta brand. read more

This is one of those stores where you u leave muttering to yourself expletives something about hating people. I swear the people that work here make me feel like the creature from the black lagoon. I usually do jaunt in in my post work out get up... but hello.. they are across from my gym. grrr. I think the thing that gets me is the way things are organized, customers need help navigating the place, unless you know the store, and since I avoid it like the plague, I don't know this store.. and don't ever want to. I find myself walking up to a group of customer service people chatting about something very important, as it seems they do not want to break up their conversation to help me. I insist on their help by stepping closer and interrupting.. they merely wave a hand in the general direction I need to go and list off brands that sound like arabic to me. wow, that clears it up.... here's the date that should have been.... I come in and people smile and say hi! and pretend I don't look like I desperately need this place... then the customer service people are a little embarrassed to be gathered and gossiping when a customer needs help... I say where are your cosmetic brushes and you know I don't know what studio blah blah or max shmax so then the cs rep walks me over and actually shows me..they are here... and here.. and they say.. I'm not sure why this place gets the negative reviews that it does. I gave never had a negative experience. The salon is fantastic and I swear by my stylist Danielle. She is a color genius and gives me the best cut. Also a big shout out to Melissa and Lori for the exceptional customer service. I had never been to an Ulta. I felt there wasn't a need since I used to just go to Sephora when I'd visit home and then Sephora finally came to CO. However, I had a coupon for $5 off a purchase of $15 or more so I decided to visit yesterday. I think the vision for Ulta was to be a "one stop shop", where you could get both high-end and drugstore cosmetics as well as salon quality hair products. The reality is that it seems like a store that doesn't have focus, there's no rhyme or reason to what is placed where and many of the shelves are bare. I sometimes get annoyed with the over zealous sales associates at Sephora, however I would have loved to have even one person come up to me in Ulta. But no, they were too busy congregating at the wrap desk about health insurance and tattoos. While I did purchase some things to utilize my coupon, I don't think it ended up being much cheaper than if I had gone to Target a little further down Colorado Blvd for the same products and I'm pretty sure that's where I'll go in the future. read more

This Ulta could be better. The two main areas they need to improve on: customer service and having items in stock. I have shopped here a number of times, and generally the customer service is terrible. One of many examples: recently I asked about an item that is frequently out of stock. While explaining that she has to look up the information, the employee paused mid-sentence to stop a customer walking by to see if she needed help. The customer looked at her, looked at me, and said she does need help but she can wait for the employee to finish helping me. The employee seemed disappointed as she looked up the item I requested, and then told me they currently don't have the item in stock and there is no order for it to come in. She then quickly walked away to help the other customer. This brings me to my next point: items being out of stock. Frequently, this location often only carries one or two of the same items at a time. So certain items sell out fast... this makes me crazy and incredibly annoyed! I've had to ask several times in the past few months if they have any more items in stock (Burt's Bees Facial Towelettes, Loreal Eyeliner, Bare Minerals Foundation), and I always get the response, "none are in stock, and none are on order." I've asked if they can order the items, and they say they are not responsible for ordering. So basically, I have to randomly come in to the store every 2-3 weeks to see if my items are in stock. Overall, this particular Ulta is not worth visiting unless you enjoy unhelpful service and wasting your time looking for sold out items, not to mention long waits at checkout. The membership rewards and coupon offers keep this place alive; just know there are better locations out there. read more

Don't come here looking for deeply discounted department store make up brands: you won't find it. What you'll find is a limited selection of department brands (Smashbox, Urban Decay, Too Faced) at the exact same prices you'd find at Sephora. But you know, without the knowledgeable salespeople Sephora has. (Again, come in here knowing exactly what you want: what color, what brand, what type, because if you don't know, the people working there are 10x more clueless.) They have a pretty good selection of salon hair care products (think Redken and Joico for less than $20!) but their beauty and make up section is nothing special. Their store is still a hot mess: empty shelves and displays, coma-status staff, fluorescent lighting. But like I said, come here to buy, not to enjoy the atmosphere. The big bonus and seller for Ulta is that they send out a ton of coupons. Seriously, I challenge you to open up any Allure magazine and NOT find an Ulta Coupon for $5-off any purchase of $10 or more. With those coupons it makes it more reasonable to come here to purchase nail polish or some otherwise $20 mascara. Join their Ulta rewards program (free!) for even more coupons in the mail. But I wouldn't throw out your Sephora Beauty Insider cards just yet. read more

This store NEVER has the product I need (make up and shampoo). Neither product are exotic or rare, so it's super frustrating wasting my lunch hour to go shopping and not have what I need. The service is sometimes great and other times super fake. I think it depends on who is managing the store on a given day. Today when I visited, one of the employees was doing a make up demo with a customer and forced greeted me when I walked in. I was in the aisle next to this employee and her customer and I heard her tell the customer, "it's so annoying being forced to greet every customer". What service!!! read more

I have to completely agree with everyone who say this store is under stocked. Almost everytime I go they are out of the nail polish, or shampoo I need. I got a brow waxing here once, and the lady I got was standoffish, and kind of rude. I pop in here quite a bit since I go to the Michales and the PetSmart right next to it, but I usually can't find anything I am looking for. I did ask the benefit lady once about the Benefit lipstick I'd bought there numerous times if they would be getting it back in stock. She looked at me and just said "They discontinued that a long time ago." Funny, I found it online AND they have it at Macy's. Instead of blowing off people with a "discontinued" excuse she could have been more informed on the product she was selling. Not crazy about this store. **Update** They remolded the store and it still sucks here. I especially don't like how they used to have a whole section dedicated to nail polish, and now it's just like 4 little rows of opi. Despite the reviews, I went in to get my eyebrows and lip waxed at the Benefit Brow Salon. I spoke with someone in a short amount of time on the phone even though they were super busy and got an appointment in for less than 20 mins from the phone call. Maggie was my stylist and she was a doll. I'm not very girly but I have what I call "wookie eyebrows" and I warned her. She was really super nice and allowed me to show her a picture of how I like my brows to work, but I wanted some more arch. She did an amazing job, was very thorough, and clean. I LOVED the attention to detail. (my brow stylist retired after I had been going to her for 10 years, so I am very picky!) Beyond that I have shopped here for both high and mid grade cosmetics and have always had help--again I am not a girly girl but I do like having makeup on. It feels so much less intimidating like some other really high end stores, the associates have always helped me with all my cosmetic needs, where as I get a lot of eyerolls at some other high end cosmetic stores. read more

I got a facial at Ulta last night. It was ok but it was only $49. I was a few minutes late maybe 5 and I called to say I might be late because of traffic. I called because it was 6 and my appointment was at 6 and I wasn't there yet so I said I'm at Colorado and Evans I'm on my way. The girl who answered was the esthetician and she was all so how long do you think you will be? I wanted to say" your store is at Colorado and Yale and I'm at Colorado and Evans there is some traffic you be the judge" but I told her like 5 minutes maybe? Then she sort of had a 'tude about me being late she was all fill all this stuff out and we will see what we get done because you are late and I have someone right after you. I got there at probably 6:05 and was done and in my car by 6:38 , I think she did an ok job but she was sassy. She washed my face and then was going to do microdermabrasion and she was like does your face feel wet anywhere? She had just washed my face and dried it but it felt a little moist to me everywhere so I touched my face and she was all you can tell me by how it feels on your face not by touching with your fingers. Ulta is the poor mans version of Sephora who has just won the lottery. I love this place. They have so many name brand beauty products mixed with inexpensive items you'll find at CVS or your local drug store. It's a good mesh, as you won't find that your pockets have holes in them when you leave. They carry brands such as Stila and Benefit along with O.P.I. And Essie. You'll even find Revlon and CoverGirl in the mix. It's a great middleman between Sephora and Walgreens. read more

It's not often I write bad reviews on individuals, but my experience at this location today actually BLEW my mind. I will also preface: just drive the extra two miles to the store on ironton street in aurora, where the associates on the "bad side of town" actually go above and beyond throughout every step of the sales process. This location on CO Blvd is dead to me after my most recent visit. The entitlement amongst the, presumably, DU students who work here and the culture of the store as a whole; which is rife with unprofessionalism, makes me actually regret my purchases. EVERY. TIME. I will be going to corporate with this review and my concerns, as I'm entirely certain this young lady violated security measures regarding my Ulta credit card. Back to today's visit, because, clearly, I need to vent. Foremost, I wasn't greeted. I walked the ENTIRE store for twenty minutes looking for a few items. Some of which I always buy, so that was a nonevent. The other item took me about fifteen minutes to locate, and not a single associate could be bothered to stop chatting, and make a round of the store to help people like, yanno myself?! The store was also in disarray, i can't tell you how many items i saw out of place. Again, very typical for this location, so i soldiered on! I was already a bit frustrated when I got to the point of sale; however the clerk, Ilana, seemed nice at first. Upon realizing I'd forgotten my Ulta credit card at home, (double points, ah dah!) Id asked her if it was like other stores, she could look me up? Not a problem. So far, alls seemingly well, until I'd realized I'd forgotten my zip code because I've moved so many times in the last few years. I explained this to Ilana, and was immediately taken aback by her accusatory tone: "How do you not know your zip code?" I explain, again, "I've moved several times in the last two years since I've had this card." Her response: "So you have no idea the zip code you signed up for the card with." NOW YOURE WASTING MY TIME. YOU DONT NEED FURTHER CLARIFICATION OF MY SITUATION, you're just being petty. Don't worry Ilana, karmic retribution is REAL! Mind you this whole time, I'm calm with her thinking maybe she's new? Maybe she has some sort of intellectual disability? Idk? This is the catalyst for the bad review, because WE ALL HAVE BAD DAYS.... She proceeds to give me the zip code she has on my account FROM HER computer screen!!! Without me even asking her for it!! ****FURTHERMORE!! THIS IS PRIOR TO EVEN CHECKING MY ID TO VERIFY I AM WHO I SAY I AM! THESE SAFETY MEASURES ARE IMPLEMENTED FOR A REASON! Had that been someone trying to use my account, she just went ahead and allowed someone to steal my identity. If that thief is good, which these schmucks usually are, they'll remember that zip and who knows how many cards and/or accounts they have access to! Oh not to mention my CREDIT and IDENTITY info! Alas, desperate to just leave, I said, "never mind and I'll use my debit card!" She ignores me and is busy chatting with her fellow coworker next to her; so clearly non responsive to my needs, you know that whole me paying your paycheck thing, clearly this young lady was being a passive aggressive (INSERT CHOICE NAME HERE...) So I tried the zip she gave me to no avail. THANKFULLY, REALLY! At this point she tells me, with attitude, because between the location, I'm sure this behavior is typically allowed; but also because she was a real bag of peaches throughout the entire four minutes she essentially held me hostage having to interact with her to process my transaction. So, why not simply continue behaving unnecessarily arrogant, argumentative, and ungrateful for my business by telling me, condescendingly, "the card has only been out for a year so...." (Went Home to verify, Id signed up for the card in late spring nearly two years ago. 18-16 homegirl, i know the register does the math for you... but wink wink!) To make matters worse, the young lady next to her (and she was super sweet, so I'd hate to drag her into this, but...) THEY WOULD NOT STOP CHATTING WITH EACH OTHER WHILE HELPING GUESTS! Ilana never called a manager to help her, OR ME! Proving she didn't care about me, period. Nor did she seem to really care about my experience in HER store; she didn't care about the 90 dollars I was spending right then; she didn't care about the 180 points, i SHOULD have gotten. All in all, this location has lost a Platinum Member who will, as I mentioned earlier, gladly spend MORE MONEY with an individual who is polite, listens, and is simply, an enjoyable person. What novel concepts to run a store!! Wow! I truly love to support other young women in business; I wish i could say the same for Ilana and the young (mostly) ladies at this location, but regrettably, i can't. Plan to spend at least 10-20minutes checking out regardless if you are the only person waiting in line or there are 5 people ahead of you. Usually when I have to talk to someone, I wind up mad and wondering why I don't just drive to the mall and go to Sephora. This review is for the store on Colorado Blvd at Yale Ave in Denver. On my first attempt to shop here I could not find a single sales person to help me. When I finally did and asked for some assistance with Ulta brand products she informed me that she could only help me with the "luxury" brands because those were the only brands she'd been trained in. Really?? I fared somewhat better on my second trip and found a salesperson who seemed to know both the Ulta and "luxury" brands. No hard sell at all. But each time she found an item I decided to purchase she disappeared without giving me the opportunity to buy additional items. This happened about five times. The final item I wanted some advice on was mascara. She suggested two brands and I chose one based on the shape of the brush. When I arrived home and opened my purchases I found the mascara was not the one I had chosen! i live minutes away from a Sephora but decided to try Ulta because I had a discount coupon from a mailing. Absolutely horrendous store and employees. My partner and I were stalked by one of the on duty managers. I had 3 items in my hand while my partner and I shopped around and I had planned on doing more shopping and spending about $300 or more there when the on duty manager approached me and asked if I needed a bag. Considering I had only eye liner, mascara and lipstick, it seemed silly for a giant bag. She then continued to follow us around the store watching us and glaring at us. I felt extremely uncomfortable and decided to just get in line and pay without doing anymore shopping. I felt chased out. She even stood behind the counter as the clerk rang us up watching us until the entire transaction was complete. She was still glaring at us and making me uncomfortable. When we left, my partner (who used to work at an Ulta) told me she stalked us because she thought we were there to shoplift! Was it my blue hair that made me look like a shop lifter? Was it my black top and long skirt? Because I had no pockets to even try to steal anything! I feel as though I was being profiled because i dont look like their average suburban house wife clientele. Today I had an appointment with Olga. She is a Master Stylist, with skill, tact and charm. I can always trust her to make me look am feel better when I leave than when I arrive. Today I witnessed her utilize her multilingual skills to reassure an extremely distraught woman with a truly disastrous hair fiasco from a different salon. Olga's calm, sweetness and knowledge assured this new client she would be fine. In my ignorance, I had no idea what she was saying, but watching her client relax and trust her made me think how smart Ulta was to hire her, and how fortunate I was to have found her. I usually don't mind shopping at Ulta, but I go in knowing what I want and don't expect any help from the staff. Now, with a lot of the Ulta store remodels and things going on, I thought maybe they were classing up their business and image, and I decided to try out their salon for a hair cut, since they are about $10-$15 cheaper than the salon I usually go to. I have curly hair and whenever I call to make an appointment at a new salon I always ask, 'Which stylist would you recommend for curly hair?" All reputable salons will actually say a name or two, there is usually someone who specializes in curly hair, since it's not like cutting straight hair. I called this Ulta Salon and receptionist said EVERYONE is great at cutting curly hair. I find this hard to believe, but she wasn't budging and wouldn't give up a name, so I just booked with the stylist who was free at a time that was convenient to me. I should have taken that red flag for what it was, and not made an appointment, but I was trying to give them the benefit of the doubt. I arrived for my appointment and the salon was fairly busy, which I hoped was a good sign. Perhaps they were just trying to get people in and out though, because my wash and cut was over in 15 minutes. I have never had anyone cut my hair so quickly. Then, she goes to style it - puts some product in and starts drying it. She is not using a diffuser, and my hair starts to frizz out. She asks if I just air dry my hair, and I say, NO, I diffuse it. She says she doesn't have a diffuser to fit her dryer. (How can you work in a salon, IN a beauty store and NOT have a diffuser???) After a minute, she shuts the dryer off and says she doesn't want to completely frizz up my hair so she'll let me go out with wet hair. Gee, thanks, just what I wanted - I wanted to get my hair done and have to rush right home to style it myself. This is my NUMBER ONE pet peeve, if a stylist cannot dry my hair curly, doesn't know what to do, so they just send me out with wet hair, I will NEVER go back. That is just not acceptable in my opinion - espcially when it's not even 40 degrees outside and my head is going to freeze. I sit there a bit dumb struck and she asks if I want some hair spray. Hair spray? For my WET hair? No, thanks. I got up and checked out with the cashier. I asked about using Ulta Points from my reward card and she informs me, I can only use them if I mention it when I call to book the appointment. She says I can use them next time. I said thanks, but no thanks, there wouldn't be a next time. She just ignores me and says I didn't have any points for salon use, anyway. Which I find interesting, considering I spend quite a bit of money on all my hair product there and always have them built up on my receipts - do they just vanish? As for the actual hair cut itself - it's choppy and uneven and I'm far from impressed. But, I didn't expect anything more when she didn't take the time to do it methodically and spent only perhaps 10 minutes cutting. The salon is way overpriced if they staff it with stylists like that (my cut was $40). Needless to say, I have resolved to not go back to that Ulta location again for anything. read more

I like the theory behind Ulta... a beauty superstore carrying all levels of product. I've shopped Ulta a few times in Northern CA, no real complaints there except poor stocking. I went to the Ulta on Colorado blvd last night ready to really spend it. Here is what I found: If you are a customer who needs advice or a little direction on products, forget it. Go to Sephora, or even Walgreens. Finding a sales rep who can spare a few mins to explain brands/product, very difficult to pin one down. If you are lucky enough to find a rep, chances are they won't know what they are talking about. I'm not the only one who has found the staff here to be rather uneducated on the products they sell. Read other reviews or ask your friends. But whatever, I found what I needed and proceeded to checkout. I had over $80 worth of merchandise in my hands: a flat iron, heat protector, lip gloss, mini essie nail polishes and a maybelline foundation (age rewind is a great deal! don't hate). The foundation I always use happened to be on sale, but out of my color. I picked up the age rewind foundation, non-cream, VERY SIMILAR and the closest thing to the sale product. I assumed this was a fair trade given that I've done the same thing at drugstores, Target... even Walmart will honor this system. So of course the "assistant mgr" argued with me that she couldn't override the substitution because it's "not the same foundation, maam". I thought my request was more than reasonable, so it was extremely irritating to get such a response. We went back a forth for a few minutes before I decided to ditch the foundation all together. Again, I could go to Walgreens and get a better deal on the same thing. I know we are talking about a very small discount, but isn't that just basic customer service, especially after spending $80? I felt humiliated when I was only asking for a reasonable substitution. On principal alone, I don't think I can shop there anymore. Epilogue: I went to Sally Beauty afterwards and found the same flat iron for $10 less, including friendly and knowledgeable customer service! Something to consider, ladies. read more

I had been going to this location for eyebrow waxes for years...through several different staff changes. But the last time was the final straw for me. I was told my wax was going to be done by their new "consultant" and they sent me to the front of the store...like to a podium about 3 feet away from the front friggin door...to get my wax. I was supposed to sit upright in a chair and get an eyebrow wax in front of all the customers. I felt like I was in the twilight zone. I said no thanks and walked out. If they're going to go from having customers laying down on a comfy salon table, with soft music playing, to sitting in a chair in front of everyone, they should at least tell you that when you call for an appointment! I went in to get my hair done. Provided reference photos and explained what I wanted my hair to look like. My hair to begin with was already blonde with an inch of my natural brunette roots coming through. The blonde was a little on the yellow side but was about the same blonde as in the reference photo I provided to my stylist, B****e. I just wanted to touch up my roots and tone down the yellow a little so it wasn't as harsh, maybe get some lowlights added. After this appointment, my roots are as dark as my natural brown and not the color that I picked out from the swatches that B****e gave me. But now I'm a brunette when I wanted to remain a blonde. All of the blonde that I walked in with is gone. I did not get anything close to what I asked for and yet it was my fault because the reference photos I provided "weren't the exact same" and when I asked about the toner that was used the answer I got was "toner will fade over time". ALL EXCUSES! That's fucking bullshit. It would have been different had B****e admitted that she messed up instead of essentially blaming me because "the photos were different". I had my hair cut and colored here, and will never go back. This is a step-by-step progression of my experience: - I go for a haircut. It's perfect, the best haircut I've ever had. My hair fell perfectly, was easy to style, loved it loved it loved it. - Since the cut was done so well, maybe I should get my color done there, right? WRONG. After selecting the color I wanted, a beautiful ash brown, dye was put on my head, I sat, was rinsed, let's look at the color. Looks okay, right? Sure, in the salon. I get home, and as soon as I look in my bathroom mirror, what do I see? Hot roots. And not just hot roots, but HOT roots, the color of weak pee. I immediately called Ulta so that they could remedy the situation, and scheduled a fix for three days from then. It didn't seem so bad....wear my hair in a ponytail, it's fine. But my hair proceeded to go green over the next few days. It sucked on so many levels, to have this nasty flat, green hair, I still cannot express it properly. - I go in for the fix, saw Stacy, she did a fantastic job. It took her three hours to fix, and she did a whole bunch of magic, making my green hair go away and replacing it with beautiful, warm brown locks that shimmered in the sun. I was happy. - My thought process next (forehead smack) was logical, to me. While the first stylist may not have been so good (read: awful) at color, she did give me a great hair cut. She was good at haircuts. Right? - No. Wrong. I sit down, we chat, I ask her if she wants to see a picture of the original haircu, taken the same day she cut it. No, she states she doesn't need to see it, but as she's cutting, she is asking me questions about how she cut it the first time. Um, I don't know what you did, was it a fluke? Sadly, the first miraculous haircut was, indeed, a total fluke. - Which leads me to my final stop: a layer cake of a haircut that left my ends to completely texturized, layered, thinned and flown-out that I had to go to a different salon to fix it, and to do so, they had to cut three inches off and give me bangs again, but only after it grew out a bit, so I had to wear my hair my in a ponytail for three months straight, or risk looking like the abovementioned layer cake. It was awful. The stylist who fixed it spent about 15 minutes trying to figure out what the heck was going on with my hair (bless her heart, she put some time into it!), and while she refrained from comment, she was unimpressed. So in a nutshell, great haircut, bad color that I paid $60 for, fixing color that cost me another $40 in tip (she did a great job, it took a ton of time, I would have felt rude not tipping her), not one apology, bad haircut that resulted in months of growth being cut off and growing out my bangs again, and I'm done. I didn't even call for them to fix the cut. Not worth it. Just done. Never going back, never recommending. They seem to have some people who know what they are doing, but after this experience, I'll go somewhere else. Ulta is the kind of place where you need to make a list and try your damndest to stick to that list. I come in here, and walk out $100 poorer, wondering what in the heck just happened. This store is so pretty and always smells clean. I'm a sucker for crazy colored eye shadows, and can get whatever I want here. I can also get my Rusk Salon products here too without having to set foot in an actual salon! What else..OPI nail polish, perfume, oh I can go on forever. Another bonus to this location is it's next door to PetSmart which is another place I tend to blow a lot of money at. read more

MANAGERS! READ YOUR REVIEWS!!!!!!!!!!! Not shocked with the 2.5 stars here. Came in to get make up so ready to spend a couple hundred bucks. Could not get any help. Employees in black were talking to each other and others from the salon. I was standing right there and was in mid "can I get some help?" And an employee asked a guy if her needed help and then turned 180 degrees and walked away. To the manager I spoke to the response is not "I'm sorry." But " how can I make this better." You take the leAd and responsibility, not the customer. I'll drive to Aurora or Lakewood. read more

I like this store. It's clean and has a good sale normally. I love Tarte and they seem to have what I need in stock. Staff seeks to be very knowledgeable in the products. I think they definitely wed more staff up front for check out, not a fan if airing in long lines. Maybe just have more then 2 people on the weekends. This store is 17 minutes from my place but I love the shopping center so I'll return. read more

I called last minute Friday morning and was able to get for an appointment due to a cancellation. I took advantage of their cut, hi light, and style special for $60.00. Danielle was my stylists, she made a few suggestions and I was absolutely thrilled with my new look. You can tell when a stylist really knows what they're doing by the way they approach styling your hair. Danielle rocks! I also purchased a few items on my way out of the store; received great help from the sales staff and was even offered a coupon on my purchase I wasn't aware of. Great experience. The new remodel is very nice also. read more
