The atmosphere is fun, with hip-hop music playing and dim lighting. There are only 7 small tables available, so I recommend making a reservation in advance! Note that this spot is very pricey, with 5 piece makis running between $12-$19. I chose the 24-piece Maki combo and hoped for the best. Often times when you order a combo, they only give you sushi that has no salmon sashimi in it. My suspicions were confirmed. But to be fair, it does look exactly like what they show on the website so it's an intentional thing. Anyway, the server for the takeout asked if we had chopsticks at home, which I appreciate the gesture to reduce waste. Plastic bags cost $0.25 so if possible, just bring a medium sized reusable one because the takeout trays are pretty big. If I counted right, there were 6 small avocado rolls, 6 fried shrimp rolls, 4 California rolls, 4 Boston rolls, and 5 fried Dragon eye sushi so we actually got 25 pieces! Woot! Woot! Tastewise, the sushi was really fresh!! Normally, I wrinkle my nose as avocado rolls but these ones were packed and the avocado was like super creamy and fresh. The sushi rice is really tasty as they put toasted black and white sesame to give it extra flavor and the texture was just right. They also rolled them nice and tight...nothing worse than loose sushi rolls that fall apart once dipped in soy sauce. :P In terms of size, these rolls are generous! I can usually eat about a dozen rolls but between the two of us, we only managed to eat 18 cause we were stuffed! The fried rolls and the rolls with fried shrimp were super crisp and crunchy. A standout dish was the fish consommé, a clear, delicate broth cooked over six hours and served piping hot. The chef guided us to dip each sushi piece halfway into the broth, balancing between warmth and the sushi's coolness. The heavily vinegared rice, when paired with the rich consommé, created a beautiful contrast of flavors, temperature and textures.
