Unfortunately, I came here for sad reasons. Nurses and doctors within the ICU were patient, nice and answered all of our questions. There were mini sodas, coffee and apples available outside of the ICU room for visitors. We were asked if we wanted a Pastor to come and pray and we said Yes. A very kind Pastor came to the Hospital, as she was on-call. Very lovely and kind. Ended up paying for $5 for my 2+ hour visit. Easy enough to drive into the parking garage. I decided to seek treatment for pain I had developed over the course of several days in my lower back, hip and leg on my right side. Upon arrival at UMMS Midtown, there were very few people in the waiting room and before my bracelet was even on my wrist, my name was called and I was shown into an examination room. Dr. Matilsky and the entire team at UMMS, Midtown were thoroughly professional, kind and caring. I was seen to promptly and back home in less than 2 hours with prescriptions waiting for me at my preferred pharmacy. Thanks and compliments to the outpatient staff of UMMC Midtown Hospital. With a relative who needed a common low-risk but major procedure, we experienced good communication, good treatment, and a good outcome here at UMMC Midtown Hospital. Parking was half-a-block south, with a covered walkway to the reception desk. Reception here was prompt, with an escort to the admitting room. Admission was friendly and efficient. We had an assigned time, and preop started about 30min later than we expected. This was communicated to us in advance, and the waiting room was comfortable enough. During prep, we met the team members who would do the procedure, including the surgeon, the anesthesiologist, a doctor and a nurse, and an intern . All communicated well and gave us both information and confidence. The procedure went as-expected, and the surgeon spoke to us directly afterwards, again communicating well and in detail. Now, ten days later, we can say that the of the procedure, the outcome, and the aftermath were all exactly as-described to us. These are great, caring staff. All of the staff whom we encountered were efficient, communicative, and friendly. In addition to giving us confidence, we got the sense that they liked working together, which gave us an extra feeling of comfort in a somewhat stressful situation. I was taken by Medics to the hospital on January the 1st close to midnight. I was suffering from severe abdominal pain. I got there and of course they did a triage with me and they sat me in the emergency waiting room after they had checked me in and gave me my armband. I sat in that room for 2 hours and no one came back to keep me aware of a time frame of an available room in the emergency care area. This is the most disgusting and filthiest hospital I've come across. I haven't been there since the seventies and I will never ever go back I will first drive myself to GBMC or to St Joseph's hospital myself I don't care if I'm halfway dying. They allow drug addicts mostly heroin users in the emergency room waiting area. They are so high they're almost falling over and they smell horrible. There is a practice that these drug addicts are doing with the emergency room . They come there just to stay warm overnight pretending they have an ailment. It was so bad with the stench and the odor I was afraid to touch anything and was glad I was sitting in a wheelchair. I refuse to sit where they were sitting it was nauseating and one guy was using the water fountain in the waiting room area to wash his arms up with sanitizer that was on the wall. This made me want to vomit. I had to go to the bathroom I refuse to use that bathroom. This hospital has got to be the worst in Baltimore city. I decided before they even were going to treat me almost two and a half hours later to call an Uber and take myself home and I will see my personal physician. They never kept me informed of a time that they might be seeing me. I got up went to the window at the receptionist in emergency area and told them to disregard me being there that I was going to go home and get out of that smelly waiting room. At one point I even asked to be moved to another spot in the waiting room but every time I turn around there was another drug addict coming in there smelling like a stench I've never smelled before. They are abusing the system at this hospital and when the Uber driver picked me up she said she's constantly down there and she sees what's going on herself. She said that's what the drug addicts are doing they're coming in this waiting room they're hanging around but when you use a water fountain to wash your arms knowing people have to drink that water that's disgusting. This occurred at the old Maryland General Hospital on Linden Avenue in Baltimore . I don't know who the head director of this facility is but they need to walk into that waiting room themselves to see what's going on at night. I spoke to security about it and I told him this was something I was never used to and will never come back. read more

I had a really good pre-op appointment at this location on 2/12. I've been fairly impressed with the University of MD facilities thus far, and this place was no different...well, perhaps it was more confusing to navigate than some of the others, but no big deal. It's very clean in there, at least the first and fourth floors were. All the staff were friendly and helpful. The nurse who did my pre-op was nice AND efficient, which is one of the best combos IMO. Her examination of me was top notch. Before I knew it, she was sending me down to the lab for bloodwork. This is where my confusion set it. There's no "Lab" listed on any sign and no one I asked knew where the lab was. Come to find out the "Lab" is "Blood Collection". You definitely have to know what you're looking for. There's also no real area to check-in in the blood collection area. It was odd. Otherwise, good visit and I'll be back in a few weeks for my surgery. Until then! read more

I was very impressed by the wound center at University of Maryland Midtown campus (UMMC) (ummidtown.org/programs/wound) compared to the one at Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC) (gbmc.org/woundcare). I strongly believe that GBMC was way too aggressive in addressing an infected blister on my foot. I believe that they cut far too much tissue and the healing took forever instead of letting my body take a more natural course. After a few weeks of treatment, I switched from GBMC to UMMC and my healing took place in a much better situation in my opinion. They created a plan that fit with my lifestyle. The other part of the care at GBMC that was very frustrating and unanticipated is that I had to pay over $1,000 in extra fees to GBMC and the podiatrist associated with my care to his private practice. At UMMC, I have had no out-of-pocket expenses and believe that my care was much better. I can't believe that my Blue Cross / Blue Shield coverage still incurred a lot of expenses at GBMC while zero at UMMC. The campus at GBMC is arguably a more modern facility but not worth all the extra expense. I'm sorry I had this experience as the staff at GBMC seem like nice people while they provide services that are gauging your pocket with a bunch of unanticipated expenses. The next time if I ever hopefully not have a wound care need, I'm going straight to UMMC. read more

I had a hell of a time just calling... Years ago when it was Maryland General Hospital you would call the main number and an actual operator would answer, they had several sorting calls. Now there is an automated system asking who you wish to speak with, the computer doesn't understand you and continues to loop asking who you wish to speak to. Then there is a just say "operator" possibility in which you get a " wait for the next available operator..." they don't pick up and the whole thing starts all over. smh. Finally after about 30 minutes I spoke to a live person that was helpful but I doubt I'll use this place for healthcare, if they can't get the phonecare correct then I have no confidence in the healthcare. read more

I was brought into the ER here on April 5th (very late, technically the 6th) because something was slipped in my drink at a club. My entire body was numb and shaking, and I was seriously dehydrated, and I couldn't breathe (visibly and loudly hyperventilating). No tests were run for any kind of date rape drugs or anything of that nature, I was not given any IV fluids despite an alcohol level of 168 (normal is 10, so definite alcohol poisoning), no oxygen for my labored/painful breathing, and I had to beg repeatedly to even have a cup of water. The four hour visit ended with her telling me what I knew (that I was drugged), but she had no way to verify or document it, and told me to see my primary care doctor. I got no treatment. There was a noteworthy nurse there: I believe his name is Antonio, and he was the only part of the visit that didn't make me feel like I was absolute garbage. read more

This is the closest hospital to my residence, and it's a good thing that it was, because Sweet Husband Mine was admitted recently with a devastating kidney infection. Thank God he could simply walk a block or two here. With that said, this hospital has definitely improved from its old days as Maryland General (MGH). They were taken over by the UMMC system, and it shows in the obvious improvements that they've made, both aesthetically and in the quality of medical care. The hospital looks nicer, the attention to ER patients is much speedier than it used to be, and we were checked on consistently and without fuss. The staff, under the MGH system, was always just really surly and angry-looking and didn't seem as if they wanted to be there - UMM, by contrast, made us both feel as if they cared what happened to us. Nice change, for sure! There are a lot more spaces in triage than I remember when I went to MGH, and they have updated medical equipment as well. Very spacious rooms! I was surprised by the quality and upgrades - this is a hospital where, while still not on par with county establishments like GBMC or St. Joe's, you'll at least be treated to the best of their ability. I have a lot more confidence in UM Midtown than I ever did while they were under the MGH system. The only downside (so far) is that my husband reportedly stated that they didn't ask for his insurance card - which is not a good thing, because if we get a big bill, we'll be fighting them re: payment. But, who thinks of this crap when you're hurting? Recommended (with reservation because of the insurance bit). read more

We've had a really great experience here. My husband had to have ankle surgery on earlier this week. He was supposed to be outpatient, but because he was in terrible pain his anesthesiologist decided to keep him to manage his pain. His surgeon checked up on him the next day and went above and beyond to reassure my husband that everything went well. He also kept him an extra day for pain management and observation, so that my husband was well taken care of! Thank you Dr. Wynes, nurse soma, Leslie, and all the other staff that have take care of my husband I. We deeply appreciate you all and the tender care we've received! read more

I had to bring my woman down for a procedure not to long ago. It was my first visit to Maryland General and it was better than expected. The staff was very organized and friendly. To keep from the agony of waiting they told me to go home and I would get a call to come back and pick her up. They were on point and very helpful at every step. read more

It is quite saddening to see how your so-called security, employees of a hospital can just dump a sick individual who clearly has some type of mental issue on the side of the street without any clothing to shield her from the cold. A hospital's moral codes should ensure that ALL patients are treated with respect and dignity, no matter what the issue is. I am saddened that these individuals had no heart in what they were doing and I am not shocked that this may not the be the first time this has happened. I hope to God that the individual that this happened to sue the britches out of your facility. I won't even give you the respect of calling you a hospital. Your whole entire staff needs to be retrained in ethics, as well as empathy towards others. It's clear that these qualities aren't possessed by these individuals(security) or the medical staff (doctors and discharge attendants) that signed off on this "dumping!" Worst Hospital I've ever had the misfortune of doing business with. The staff is ghetto and unprofessional, there's always a long wait, and they are the most incompetent office I've ever seen. My daughter got THREE sets of daycare papers filled out, THREE. They made copies ( I watched them do that) but did not scan them into the system like they are supposed to so when we needed copies they had nothing on file. If that's not bad enough they didn't even have the decency to expedite another set of forms and expected me to wait ANOTHER 10 business days minimum smh. Waited to post my review because I wanted to see how my husband healed after his surgery. The good news is that he has healed from major leg surgery very well, and that's the most important part. I will also say that parking at the hospital was very easy as well. Now, negatives: - I never met the doctor. I am used to meeting the doctor before surgery and then afterward to learn how it went. Neither happened. - The facilities need a makeover. I was afraid to sit in the dirty waiting room chairs. If the waiting room is so filthy, I do not have confidence in the surgical areas. - This was my husband's first surgery. After waiting for quite a long time, past the time they told me he would be in the OR, I finally went up to the desk to check. I was sent back to recovery, where my husband was very upset. He was confused and angry about being moved from a bed to a chair, no one had explained the procedure to him, and the nurse was rude. He thought they were trying to push him out. Why was I not called back earlier, when he had woken up? I could've helped with calming him down, and explaining things. Instead, I walked back to an argument between the nurse and my husband, and he had been awake from some time. - My husband had major leg surgery. And no crutches were ordered. We had to wait over two hours for crutches to be ordered, and then for a PT to show him how to use them. Very inefficient. I shouldn't have to ask for crutches! He had a drain in his leg and couldn't walk for two weeks. No idea how they expected us to cope without crutches. In summary, very glad he has healed well, but we will not go there again. read more

Last week when my wife broke her arm in the shower she was brought to the ER, and the staff was amazing! She was in and out a lot quicker then when I fractured my ankle a few years past when we lived in Maine. Maybe it was because it was a Tuesday night, but still the nurses were so attentive and kind, plus our kids were excited to sign her cast. Hopefully we will never have to come back, but if we do I know we'll be in good hands. read more

They tripled-bill my insurance company to the tune of ~$10,000, caused me to spend months trying to fix their mistake, blamed me for all their mistakes, and then SENT ME TO COLLECTION FOR THE WRONG AMOUNT even though I was making monthly payments on-time.
