But that's not the case anymore. I would NEVER bring my dog here again. The owner Tony actually admitted to me at pickup "your dog must have an iron stomach" (I confusingly said no) and he admitted that he allowed my dog to EAT AND CLEAN UP ALL THE KIBBLE FROM THE DOG CRATES AT THE END OF THE DAY!!! mind you I never had Tony feed my dog at any daycare visit. She never ate during playcare. And my dog became aggressively sick in the middle of that night, due to Tony's RIDICULOUS manner, and lack of any responsibility for an animal. If you care about your dog, do NOT trust this place. I should've write this review a while ago. After I confronted him and left he continued to be rude to me in email, stating my dog was a mess and out of control. (Well I bring her to daycare to play, he never stated any such issues. And then started attacking me and saying how terrible of a person I was and how we didn't "click" as people. Wow, I just wanted a nice place for my dog to play. This guy is a FUCKING IDIOT.

He gave us a whole extra year with my beloved white dove and took such good care of him . The office is very busy, but it is worth the wait to see Dr. Toothaker

Since 2016, Alan Toothaker was the veterinarian for our sweet, beautiful golden retriever Sophie…read moreduring the months each year that we have spent in Maine. In November 2024, he examined Sophie and drew labs. He told us, "she's fine," "just adjusting to her medications." Without much change in her symptoms until the last hours, she died 2 weeks later as we were finally taking her to an emergency room. On 2/26/26 the Maine Board of Veterinary Medicine disciplined Dr. Toothaker for poor record-keeping and violating practice standards in his care of Sophie, and separately regarding another complaint that alleged he mistreated animals and staff. See Ellsworth American 3/25/26 [https://bit.ly/EA260325_LocalVetDisciplined]. You can read the details of these two cases -- AND THE 4 PREVIOUS ACTIONS -- on the State of Maine web page for his license [https://bit.ly/ToothakerMaineLicensePage]. This includes for my case the specific consent agreement that Dr. Toothaker chose to sign to avoid going to court (administrative hearing). You will also see there that he was still on probation for previous infractions when he treated Sophie. Beyond these state actions, Dr. Toothaker also paid $145,360 to resolve complaints by the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) about his mishandling of controlled substances in 2023 [https://bit.ly/DEA_ToothakerFine]. As a (human) doctor, after Sophie died, I requested from Dr. Toothaker's clinic, her complete medical record, and I was appalled. We had brought Sophie in because she had not been eating well, but the medical note said she was "eating and drinking well," the kind of text one has in a default note template that's supposed to be changed in the real note, but he didn't. The lab results had numerous red flags that Dr. Toothaker ignored. When I presented to another veterinarian (without giving away the subsequent events) the data that Dr. Toothaker had before him at Sophie's last visit, and asked whether going with "she's fine" seemed right, that vet said "I would not choose to ride for a few weeks on 'she's fine.' I think you would be better served to go see an internal medicine specialist." We would certainly have taken her to a specialist -- driven that night to Portland if needed -- in line with the extensive medical care we have gotten for her over her life. Unfortunately, Dr. Toothaker did not suggest taking her to a specialist, so we didn't do it, and now Sophie is dead, 3 days after her 9th birthday. She had a complicated medical history which Dr. Toothaker knew about but ignored. Equally worrisome in a different way, namely, his trustworthiness, after he received my complaint from the Board, he reported that he -- oops! -- had failed to include in the "complete medical record" that he had sent me, more complete medical ("SOAP") notes maintained "in a separate module" of his electronic medical record. This conveniently discovered note contains at least one statement that I know to be false, and many others that are highly implausible. My impression, though unproven, is that he fabricated these notes in response to my complaint. Dr. Toothaker still claims that he did not do anything wrong medically, but the veterinary board thinks he did, and so do I. I noted in my complaint that Dr. Toothaker is friendly and affable, but that does not make up for his being cavalier and irresponsible about the actual medical care of animals. Before letting Dr. Toothaker care for your pet, I highly recommend you read his disciplinary actions and look at the medical notes that he has previously written for your pet. Sophie died quietly on the floor of our vehicle. I didn't get to say goodbye to her.

If we could give less stars we would! Several years we have boarded here. We thought it was great…read morethey offered a free bathing before picking up, elevated dogs beds and blankets provided and we like the ladies working there. On Friday we dropped of our 2 dogs one needed a kennel cough spray vaccine that was $15.00 okay fine she ran the card for everything on drop off day when I looked at the paper they charged $42.00 to administer it. WFT really $42 to spray up her nose which I did say I'm not at all happy with. We also needed to pick Sunday so they changed extra $19.00 for that just to hold a key to a separate door where both dogs would have to share a crate all day until we arrived. She took the dogs out to the kennels when she reappeared I said just so you know this will be the absolute last time we ever board here, I guess all I need from you now is to see where I pu on Sunday. She misunderstood this and walk me out back through the feeding station room, through the cat boarding with no windows or ventilation. This is where wanted to puke!!! I swear that boarding kennel hasn't been updated or upgraded or cleaned since they built it!!!!! Go into the dog kennel huge Shepard barking and pacing no water no elevated bed no blankets. Next to him was a fragile old little tiny dog shivering and shaking no water no elevated dog bed no blankets. Next door we enter is the kennels where my dogs were. My dogs were in a soaking wet concrete kennel with no water no blankets no elevated bed. She takes them out now they think they are getting out of the dump I say what are you doing? I asked to see where to pu Sunday. She now can't get the dogs pack in the kennel so I have to push them back into hell and walk away. Now you might be thinking why did you leave them? Well like everyone else that boards I was headed out on vacation right after dropping them off with no other options last minute. I now get the tour of Sunday pu and this is when the girl tried to justify all the extra money charges that were last minute explained only after they ran my credit card. I had hardly got out of the parking lot crying so bad about HAVING to leave them both there. Within 20 minutes I had them set up on Brewer at bear Brook Kennel. Walked in demanding my dogs!!! And a refund on all. They didn't have anything else really to say to me I did tell them to loss our file since we are never using them again and the their kennel was a hell hole and ohh yes they have been reported to the state. I guess I'm now glad for the change of $42 extra charge that pissed me off because the was the start of the "Grand Tour " Ps here's why you get a free bath before pickup my girls where in their care for less then 30 minutes and smelled so bad of stale urine and poop when they got in the truck!!!

We would pick her up and she was a "hyper-fit" but soon settled back into our home routine after reassurance, a shower and much brushing. We picked her up yesterday and she was so glad. She was also shining clean and had been brushed out , toenails trimmed (really well). She was less stressed, even when coming home into the house. She was glad to be home as always but way more comfortable with being gone. We had a repair man stop by today, and for the first time ever, she didn't run out barking and trying to scare him off, she was watchfull, but not threatening . Not sure how you managed this, but whoever is working there now , THANK YOU, for taking such good care of her and helping with her training. Kerry Dougherty & Dick Dyer

I had several questions because the ownership is new and I am not familiar with their policies. The female was clearly irritated by my questions and she kept telling me to look at the website, which I had already done. My questions were specific to what I needed to provide for a dog that takes daily medication and if my dog could have 1-on-1 exercise/play time because she doesn't do well with other dogs. I also had a question regarding vaccinations; the prior owners would tell us when their records showed a vaccination was due. Also, we've boarded our dogs in kennels in other states that want kennel cough vaccination every 6 months (even though the vet states it's annual). When asking for clarification, she kept telling me to call my vet and would not answer any questions regarding 'their' requirements specific to kennel cough vaccination. When I finally told her that I didn't appreciate her attitude, she explained that I had an attitude and promptly cancelled my dog's reservation, telling me to find another kennel. We have been using Canine Country Club for years with nothing but GREAT experiences. I met the new owner a few days ago (she owns Paws and Claws in Belfast as well) and I thought she was nice, but apparently the owner told the staff person that I was rude when I stopped by. The only reason I stopped by was because we were driving past the kennel and I needed a reservation in just 2 days. I was hesitant to make my hotel reservations without knowing I had a reservation for my dog. The owner told me to go right ahead and make my travel reservations and assured me that she had a spot for my dog. I thanked her for her time and told her it was nice to meet her. Apparently the experience was not mutual since she told her staff I was rude. We already found another kennel to use and their staff was extremely helpful and professional. It's a shame that customer service is now nonexistent at Canine Country Club and the courtesy of returning phone calls and answering questions of customers is a huge inconvenience. I don't think they will do well with the current staff..... Apparently they don't recognize that customers have options too.

While we found the name a little odd and they came up almost last on a search for doggie daycares in Bangor (probably because they are in Hermon ME which is just 1 highway exit away or 7 minutes away). They are a very large facility and all the dogs are very happy. The limited interactions we had with staff - they were friendly and very professional. Reasonably priced with flexible longer hours. On the 2nd day of daycare, our dog practically pulled my arm off racing to go back to play! They gave me feedback that he had been well behaved and asked me a question about a scar he has so I knew that they had checked on him and knew who he was, despite the large number of dogs they oversee. We wish they had a camera system that we could log in to watch our dog play - I'd pay a premium for this service. Otherwise, Maine Animal Keeper is friendly, wonderful and we would definitely trust our dog with them again!
