What a fun place to visit! We stopped in for a few hours while in Michigan, and it was a fun little get away. Plenty of parking and a little bit of a drive from Lansing, but it was worth it. They have a bar area with wines and ciders to taste. Fresh made donuts in another building. We had one of each- the cinnamon sugar was the best. There were several things for kids outside- jumpy things, maze, train ride. It was rainy and cold when we went, so we didn't see a ton of that going on. You can see how the cider is made, buy some gifts (a little on the higher end, like most gift shops), have some drinks, or eat in the deli. They had lots of baked goods to choose from! The only thing I didn't enjoy was my trip to the restroom- it definitely needed to be cleaned, but as soon as I mentioned it to someone they had it taken care of. I can see how this is a local favorite and can be a special visit each year! I'd like to visit again when the weather is less wet and chilly. read more

We saw the sign on the highway for Apple Cider Slushees. It sounded so good we had to check it out on our way to CMU. I am so glad we stopped. The slushees are very delicious and the donuts are just as good. They have hard cider, too! Cute shops had a lot of Michigan themed items. There was a fun looking bouncy item on the playground that was so tempting to try but we didn't stay long, maybe next time! I am sure I will be back on a future trip. read more

This place is more than just apples! I went to Uncle Johns for some apples and ended up getting buzzed at their free wine tasting! I also ended up buying a few bottles of wine. It was fun to wander around, I went up the steps in a "barn" type shop and there was a very crowded donut "factory" where people were watching donuts get made and buying them. From there you could look down at the cider press that was crushing the apples and making cider. They have horse drawn wagon rides. There is also this cool little train. I thought it cruised around the whole orchard, so my friend and I eagerly stood in line waiting for our turn on the train so we could take it all in from the comfort of our own choo choo car. People were staring at us, but I just thought it was my beauty. We got on the train and rode around basically a driveway circle that had scarecrows and hay bales. Apparently it was a kids ride! Oh well! I'm a kid at heart and I'd say Uncle John's has something fun for all ages. Check it out. read more

Every fall it's time for a trip up to the cider mill. Since I was a child, I've enjoyed watching the apples be turned into cider. The old system, not the bright and shiny one they have now, was much cooler. They crushed crates of apples with layers of burlap as filters. How much cooler is that!? Anyway, this year we headed up for our fix and brought a few friends with us. It was a great time. The best part obviously is the homemade donuts (cider, Cinnamon sugar, pumpkin, ect) and the homemade cider !! oh and caramel apples !! I do not have children, but in my book the cider making process is just as exciting for adults, if your are lucky you can see the cider making machines at work. This place is a children's dream; tractor rides, a pumpkin patch, and a piano upstairs that plays itself !! Uncle John's needs to be your new fall staple! This place is a blast. Every time I go, I feel like a kid again. There are so many different things to do, many of which are free for kids, and they have lots of weekends in the fall with addition events. As per the usual cider mill, you can watch the cider being made while you drink a glass that just came off the line. They also offer hot cider as well. The doughnuts are awesome. Just dense enough that they really fill you up, and the cider helps wash down all the yummy goodness. Please buy a bag and take it home, if you don't, you'll regret it later, I promise. There is also the Winery. Yep, I said it, winery and cider mill. And there is WINE TASTING! The wine is really good. I was surprised when I first tired it. It's a little more pricey that I would have thought, but totally worth it. I really love the Pear Dessert wine. Yum. If you are hungry they have a little shop with sandwiches, soup, pies, cookies and fudge. I warn you now: you will be lured into buying copious amounts of stuff in there because it smells and looks so good. Try to muster up your courage, but it's really a losing battle. :) The drive from the Metro area is not bad at all, and more than worth it. Just be careful on 127! After the speed limit changes to 55, the cops are sneaky and vindictive. You'll be grateful I warned you, and you can thank me later ;) read more

We went during an arts & crafts festival and it was perfect! The live music, the food trucks, the craft booths, and of course the usual delicious apples and cider! This is an amazing cider mill to go to either just adults or as a family. The apples are absolutely delicious and so is the cider! I'm not a huge donuts fan so I did not partake of those, though they looked pretty good. The only thing I really wish they did was let you pick your own apples. But beside that, 5 stars! read more

Please don't murder me, native Michiganders... but let's be honest. Is walking around in mud, eating (again, let's be honest!) borderline hard donuts and drinking regular ol' cider while narrowly avoiding running over a never-ending parade of loud children really worth the drive out to the middle of no where for about thirty-minutes worth of activities? Yet, we all find ourselves, again and again, at Uncle John's every year. It's just one of those things you do if you live within a fourty-five miles radius of St. Johns come September/October. It's always the same thing. If it weren't a tradition, some might call this place boring. The reason for the four stars? Home-made cheddar cheese bread. The best accompanyment to soup ever. And above all - the wine tasting room. This is where you need to go if you want to have a blast at Uncle John's. Seriously, you get eight (I think) samples of choice from a decent variety of special and unique wines that you cannot find any where else for free! I highly recommend paying a few extra bucks for a large shot of their cherry vodka though. All the wines and hard ciders are available for purchase too for extremely affordable prices! I suggest the Melomel. Probably my favorite wine ever, from any where. To sum things up: Cheese bread and Melomel make this barn that plays bad country music worth the drive every year. Uncle John's used to be the go to place to buy apples. Now, not so much. We found a few 1/2 peck size bags, but nothing sold by larger quanities. I guess they have just gone the way of cider, drinks ( both soft and hard) , baked goods and the such. In the past I have bought a few bussels which the staff helped load in the car. Today, if you can find staff to ask for help they act like you are crazy for asking. So in short, if you want a hard drink and baked goods this is the place for you.... if you want to buy apples keep driving. read more

This place is a Pure Michigan must. While I don't have any biological children, I can tell you that your kids will not be bored here. Neither will you. From the cider mill and bakery to the helicopter rides and bounce houses, there's plenty to keep families entertained. And adults...refreshed. Uncle John's has the best tasting room I've experienced at its winery. Hard cider, wine, vodka and coming soon whiskey are just a few grown up beverages they have. This ginormous place does get packed but the parking was efficient. I suggest you go early for sure to experience the fullness. And be prepared to wait in line on the weekend. The hard cider is so wonderful this place gets four stars just for that. Free samples!!! And it's dry and lovely like champagne- seriously good stuff. Also looks like a fun place for kids to play outside. HOWEVER.... The donuts are totally not worth it ....cakey instead of dense and the cinnamon sugar uses powdered sugar so it's too sweet and just not worth the splurge. Also the apples are stored very unappealingly in bags and indoors at room temperature and felt soft. We didn't buy any. So.... Come for the hard cider but go elsewhere for the apple orchard experience. Finally.... The graphic designs on the cans of hard cider are like totally amazing but the supposedly nicer bottle of cider has the hands down worst graphic design I've seen since at least last weekend. Like literally an American flag waving. Hopefully there are plans to make the bottles look at good as the cans. read more

Returned to UJ's for wine tasting w. some family who was in from out of town & it reminded me of some stuff I left out of the 1st review. DO sample the wines from the winery. DO NOT try the brandy or the vodka (new products) unless you're trying to strip paint off your car or grow hair on your chest! Whew! That being said, we had a great time sampling (more) wines & of course took home some bottles. When you get a discount for buying 4 or more bottles, you're motivated to do so... The barn doesn't house the cider & donuts anymore so it's all in the store. I think this takes away from the "experience" but it could be a temporary thing before they close on 12.31 for the winter... We'll see! read more

This is our favorite cider mill to pick pumpkins in the fall, even after moving to California my husband and I return every year to visit our favorite cider mill. The environment is so inviting, there's lots to do here, and it always feels special. So much so that last year we flew out on wedding photographer to do our engagement photo shoot here! There are so many great places on the grounds for photos, I highly recommend it! The cider is delicious as is their donuts. There hard cider and wine tasting for adults, a bouncer for kids, a wagon ride to the corn maze and the pumpkin patch and lots of great little cut outs things they have out for photo opps, what more are you really looking for in the perfect fall pumpkin picking experience. They also have yummy baked goods and jared and canned goods for purchase. My husband always buys a big bag of honey crisp apples to last him through the season. I couldn't recommend this cider mill more. Come here for a great fall day! read more

I came to Uncle John's for the Great Lakes Cider and Perry tasting event. The event was a solid 3.5 stars. It was a fun event with plenty of hard ciders to try. The price was fair and there were cider, donuts and apples out to munch on. It was raining for part of the event and it was inside a barn and tent which was great. They opened a large door when the rain stopped so there was air flow, also great. For the cider mill itself...The cider was muddy tasting the donuts weren't warm and were pretty bland. The lunch room was fairly priced and had some non sweet options. We had a sloppy joe and a pulled pork sandwich. They were decent and fairly priced. I would definietly not come here again, unless it was a similar special event read more

A few years ago we came to uncle John's and had a wonderful time. This year, it left some things to be desired. Namely the cinnamon sugar donuts. If you are looking for a traditional cinnamon sugar with large crystallized sugar and a thick coating, this is not your place. What a cute little place. Has amazing donuts, cider, and Carmel apples all house made. You can watch the cider being made and packaged. There is just so much to do for the whole family. Wine tasting, hay rides, corn mazes, play areas and rides for the little ones. They also have food trucks. The kettle corn is the best I ever had! Definitely a place to take the family for the day!! It would be worth a 5 star but we did buy tokens for the hay ride and there was just so much to do we ran late and missed the hay ride so we had $9 in tokens we were unable to use or take back to get our money back. They told us they don't expire to bring them back another time but we live 2 hrs away by the time we visit again those tokens will have been lost or forgotten about. Ugh. Where are the gala apples their website says are ready?? I made the half-our trip there for fresh gala apples, and ended up coming home with a half-peck of some OLD and ROTTING golden-delicious hybrid the sign said are best for eating straight-up but could also be used in baking. (I had caramel apple crisp to make for a special event tomorrow). The bad parts were turned away from the outside of the bag. The stem areas are all brown and withering--that's how I know they're old. Bummer. I had never been there before. I don't see a return trip in my future. After viewing their website we decided to drive an hour and a half to enjoy lunch and bring home some cider. Arrived at 12:30 on Friday Sept 17th...we were ready for lunch so we immediately went to the "lunch" building to order lunch. A sign sat on the lunch counter stating they were closed and that there were vendors outside selling food. We approached the ONLY vendor outside, a bbq and asked what they had. "Ahhh, we got a late start and we will not be ready to serve for at least an hour and a half." So much for lunch...we decided to have a donut and cider..donuts were stale and 1/2 gallon of cider and 2 little fry cakes $7.00! The shops all smelled moldy, ugh what a waste of time. We have only gone in the fall. It is worth a drive. They have a simple train ride for the kids. A play space. A track to bounce on a ball through. A big trampoline type hill. When we went this fall they had a lot of inflatables set up back behind the parking lot. Donuts, cider and bakery. For the adults they have wine tasting. read more

This place is huge. We really enjoyed picking pumpkins here. They also have a cider mill in the massive barn, where you can drink delicious (fresh!) cider and eat donuts (also freshly made). god it was good! it was packed when we were there, but that's Ok. they have all kinds of activities for the kids in your group, from hay rides to tractor rides to pedaled tractor races (Free) to playground (Free) to petting farm (Free) and a bunch of other stuff. good clean family fun. gotta love it. 5 stars. read more

Great place! Fun for all ages. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars, is the bathroom situation. Something has to be done about it. The amount of people and children, with only two bathrooms, one stall each. This is the only thing that keeps us from coming more than once a year. I really have no star to give this place. My family and I left there about 3 hours ago and our experience was terrible! I understand an outhouse is an outhouse but when a six-year-old child has to use the bathroom that is absolutely disgustingly filthy there's no reason for that. Went in and bought some donuts said they were cinnamon sugar but we tasted absolutely no cinnamon and the donuts themselves I really can't even say what they were, needless to say those were in the garbage. Daughter and I did a small wine and cider sample bought a couple of bottles of wine and one bottle I believe was hard cider. My daughter put the bottle in the back of her van seat so it wouldn't get broken. Picked it up when she got home and the entire bottle bottom fell out and now her car smells horrible from liquor. The only thing Apple available was apparently last year's products. What a waste of tourists money to stop into that place! read more

This is my favorite cider mill! This place has it all and has an authentic feel to it. You can actually see the cider being made, which is not a given for all cider mills anymore. They have a winery with fruit wines and hard cider [where you can do a free wine tasting!!!!] with reasonable prices on bottles (quantity discount for multiple bottles). They have a cute gift shop to walk through, they sell pumpkins, apples and other treats! I believe the play area for kids is still free and they have a hayride and train for children too. It is very family friendly and I highly recommend a visit if you will be passing through the St. Johns area! read more

I've loved Uncle John's Cider Mill for years and when they opened up their winery, I was super excited and got a few bottles. I liked their fruit wines and their sparkling peach wine so much that my husband and I served it at our wedding four years ago. After we moved, Michigan fruit wines are tops on our list for things we miss and I was so happy to get the opportunity to go back to Uncle John's for some cider and some wine. Their wines have gotten even better and they've added more variety. We got a sweet white wine that I am going to love to sip for dessert and a cranberry wine that the girl behind the counter recommended, a sparkling peach wine for nostalgia :) and some of their hot cinnamon hard cider...essentially their regular cider with hot cinnamon flavor added. It was super yummy! And their regular cider hit the spot like always. Free wine tastings make the winery even better and the girl behind the counter was very encouraging of us to taste, rather than stingy with the wines like they are at so many places. read more

UJ's is always a great time! It is geared more toward families (they have lots of stuff for kids) and it gets packed in the fall, especially around halloween. The apple cider is delicious and so are the doughnuts! They also produce their own wines, often using unorthodox ingredients (sometimes the results are surprisingly good, other times not so much...but they get an "A" for effort).
