This has been on of my favorite places to shop for unique gifts for years but was frustrated when Covid-19 hit and they were dramatically restricted. This was frustrating because I wanted to get a small gift for my Daughter in California just to say "I love you and care about you" and in my mind, I had previously seen the perfect gift in my mind in this store. Quiet day yesterday and the Governor and permitted us to go a limited Phase 1 reopening and Uncommon Scents had reopened with a lot of restraints. First of all, you can not enter the store without a Face Mask although they do sell facemasks and looking at the price, this is basically at as cost basis. Hand Sanitizer is available. At the time this was written it was the day before Mother's Day and not sure why I did not complete it at the time. Been hectic on the West Coast and my Daughter had only left the house once and that was for an emergency Dental Appointment. My Grandson has not left at all so no way he could have bought his Mother a Mother's Day Present so I was going to do that for him even though it was going to be late. I had previously seen a wood carving in the store of a Mother and Child or Madonna and Child and I was looking for that item. Could not locate it immediately but Connye the Store Owner helped me look and we found it. As I was going to check out, I spotted a Hand Towel with the outline of a Bear in Red. It was printed with the slogan, Mama Bear, Don't mess we me. My Daughter calls herself Mama Bear so that was an instant sale. Connye insisted on wrapping the items herself Glad she did because in terms of gift wrapping, I'm all thumbs. Next day, went to the Post Office and got a Medium Priority Mail box and packed it and my wife Susan took it to the Post Office on Tuesday and mailed it. Suppose to get to Carlsbad on Friday but made it on Thursday and was a quite hit. Way to go Z and Happy Mother's Day to your Mother. read more

I visited Uncommon Sense yesterday because I wanted to support a local business. The store is very cute and offers unique items you won't find at larger retailers, which is exactly the type of business I enjoy supporting. Unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing. One of the most concerning things I witnessed was Connie interacting with another customer's young son. After asking his age, she began speaking to him in exaggerated baby talk and repeatedly making comments about the way he spoke, including telling his mother, "You let your son talk like this?" She continued making comments about how he would talk when he started school. She carried on to the point that the child became visibly uncomfortable and eventually moved behind his mother, peeking around her while Connie continued addressing him. As a parent, it was very difficult to watch. You have no idea whether a child may have a speech difference, developmental disability, autism, anxiety, or simply be uncomfortable speaking to a stranger. There is no reason to belittle or embarrass a child this way. Unfortunately, my own daughters, ages 14 and 17, were also repeatedly followed and questioned by Connie while simply browsing. Every time they picked something up, they were asked if they were buying it and told it could be held behind the counter. They were simply shopping and looking at items while I was browsing on the other side of the store. Connie also repeatedly commented on the basketball players on their shirts and asked questions that came across as very condescending. At one point, I was told she physically placed her hand on my daughter's hand while she was putting an item back and said, "Here, I can help you with that." My daughter did not need assistance. What made the entire experience even more awkward was watching Connie walk around the store and interact as though she were another customer or patron while simultaneously monitoring my daughters. It created an extremely uncomfortable atmosphere. We purchased the few items and now as I learned more I wish I would have never supported this place I addressed my concerns before leaving, she acted oblivious!!!! I came into this store specifically wanting to support a local business. Instead, I left feeling extremely uncomfortable and disappointed by the way both my daughters and another young child were treated. Every customer--especially children and teenagers--deserves to feel welcome, respected, and treated with dignity. read more

The Owner is rude, unprofessional and defensive . Her employee spoke to white customer enthusiastically . Totally ignored me, didn't offer help when I walked in and shopped around the store. Got defensive when I talked to her about it . Claims she nor her two other employees in that TINY store saw me. But they sure did see the white woman walking in. Lies. Owners are rude and treat customers as if they are doing them a favor. We have bought several things before including Jelly Cats and other gifts. Today we went to try and get Needohs for my daughter. The owner was hovering over us, telling us to put them back on shelves, not to "poke" them (they are in boxes... so not sure what that's about). My daughter went back in later that afternoon because she wanted to ask if she could buy 2 for her brothers even if she had already been in previously. I was on a call so sent her in with my card. The employee at the front cashier said no problem go grab the ones she wanted for her brothers. When she went back there the owner berated her, told her "this is why we have limits because of people like you"... sorry but we aren't resellers, we aren't even collectors... she just wanted a Needoh and one each for her siblings. We literally stopped in on a whim. Shame on ownership. My daughter is 11 and was in tears after the incident. We won't be back and I encourage others who frequent this store to consider who they are spending their money with. Disgusting behavior. read more

If I could get this store, a zero star rating, I absolutely would. The owner is the rudest person I've ever met in retail. She put her hands on my child and tried to rear her towards the register right in front of me. She obviously doesn't know how to run a company because she's trying to limit her own sales and is putting her hands on other people's children without consent. This owner is awful! It sounds incredibly frustrating to be treated poorly as a customer--one who has shopped her multiple times. In retail, policies like "one per child" can feel arbitrary and hostile when there is plenty of stock available on the shelf. Since I spend my days helping others working in healthcare, it is completely understandable that I would expect basic professional courtesy. While I can't force you to change your policies, I can warn other shoppers and share my experience with the local community to help you make informed decisions. I mean if it's one per child and the adult has to pay tell me the rationale for maybe a birthday present or a SUPRISE. Karma is waiting for you and the way you treat others! read more

Was in there looking for a jelly cat asked one lady about one my daughter saw the previous day. Was buying as a gift for her birthday. She told me they sold it, then another lady asked who it was for I informed her my daughter. She then says in a very low voice we have it. I was confused so I said I was just told you didn't she then says we have 4 of them but don't advertise it. Very confused I was like what are you talking about she then got pissed and said no we don't have it. I asked are you kidding me what's going on here. She continued to say we don't have it shoeing me away with her hand. Be mindful parents they are running a scam with hiding inventory to get us in the door with the wantons, needohs, and jellycats. usually love this store for their trendy selection and stop by whenever i am in town. however today my family and i had a very negative experience. my mom had been patiently waiting her turn to look at the jellycats. when she finally got the chance to get in front of them to look, an extremely rude employee came up behind her, touched her, and physically moved her, while telling her to get out of the way "so the kids could see." my mom had just gotten to the front and didn't even have a chance to pick one up. i understand wanting to let the kids see, but i think that paying customers are entitled to get their turn looking no matter what age. my mom and i felt very disrespected. i would like to return to this store in the future but now i feel unwelcome based on my age. read more

Today was the last straw for me. I have tried and tried to shop at this store and ignore the rudeness of most of the staff. I love their college section and have gotten many unique Penn State and UNC Chapel Hill things and bought so many cute things at Christmas, including my favorite Highland Cow glass and wind chimes for both of my grandparents. It's unfortunate that a store that has many nice things is run by people who act like they are doing you a favor by allowing you to spend money in the store. I was told that they got the viral Needohs in today and rushed all the way from Davidson to get one. My daughter is a first grade teacher and is trying to find enough Needohs to gift each of her students one for her end of year "fun" gift. I have made it my mission to help her make the last day of first grade exciting by helping her find these squishy things, during the day, since she is hard at work teaching. The kids talk about them everyday and some have many while some have zero. She wants each of them to have that something special, even if it sounds silly to us adults. I started my search a couple of weeks ago and spend all day everyday searching. It's been a challenge to say the least. I was soooo excited to find one today after searching my entire day, from the entire Concord Mills mall, Walmart, several gift shops, bookstores, and drug stores. Everyone I encountered was so kind until one employee at Uncommon Scents. I was sooooo excited to see that there were still Needohs when I arrived. One of the employees shared my excitement and mentioned it was like finding treasure these days. Yes it is. Another rude employee stated that I was not allowed to buy a Needoh because the sign states that only children can buy one. What??? The limit is one. Why are you making issue of anyone buying ONE Needoh? The kind employee allowed me to get it. I wanted to say no thank you and leave but I'm sadly desperate to find any at all. It was my last purchase at this store. I know there are people who take advantage and I am not one of them. My daughter cares deeply for her students and loves to make every holiday and the end of year so special and memorable even if it diminishes her already pathetic paycheck. Read the other reviews and decide yourself if you want to continue to support this business. Do we really want to allow a business to succeed that treats their customers so poorly? If you are under the age of 25 steer clear from this shop. The second I walked into this store I was followed around by the owner and when shopping I was asked what I was doing. (Shopping???) after that I was asked if I had a job and when I said I didn't she asked how I would be paying for my items/how I had money. At the counter while my friend was checking out she turned to my friend and asked if I talked a lot. (Okay...) and then proceeded to tell my friend not to give me any of the items she just purchased. after a guardian entered the store to ask what that was about she came out to our car pointing at me saying "is she the one who told you that?" And then "when she was walking out the store i just knew" and then made a nasty face. The owner of this store bought squishmallows (large stuffed animals) at Costco for $20 per item and is now selling them at her store for $49.95. The worst part of this is that when she was stuffing her cart full of them at Costco (at least 15) there were families asking to purchase them. She didn't look anyone in the eye, kept going, and walked away from the empty box at Costco. A few of asked- can we please have just one (both families had multiple children) and she said no that she would be purchasing all of them. We all stood there in disbelief. I received several items from this establishment from my twin sons on Mother's Day 2020. One of the items was a tumbler with a straw. I was very pleased and appreciative that they took the time and effort to pick this out for me! Later that day I opened the cup to wash it for the first time and realized that the straw was broken. I mentioned it to my sons and they advised me that they had the receipt, but that I should be able to exchange it without one. A few days later I went to the store with cup and broken straw in hand in an attempt to either exchange the item for another one, or just get a new straw. I spoke to the sales associate on duty named "Susan". She took the cup, opened & inspected it and her first response was "this did not leave the store like this...we open all the cups before we sell them and would have noticed this". So she basically was accusing me or my sons of breaking the straw and then trying to return it. I assured her this was not the case. While we were having the discussion, another customer walked in and rudely interrupted us with a question about masks. Susan then rudely ignored me and helped the other customer despite the fact that I was clearly there first. After a few minutes I spoke up and asked: "so you are saying that you refuse to exchange the item or provide me with a new straw?", she responded with a rude "yes" and repeated her suspicion about what had happened...that I broke the straw. Okay guys, I realize that it is just a cup, but it's the principle of the matter! What happened to customer service and the belief that the customer is always right??? You know she could have returned the cup to the manufacturer as a damaged item. Needless to say , I expressed my dissatisfaction with her response and lack of customer service skills, and finished by adding that I would never be back to shop at the store again! I then obtained her name. She is not the owner, btw! According to the internet,the establishment is owned by Connye C. Connye. I have no idea if this is truly a person's name or what,but note to the owner: FIRE Susan!! If I owned an establishment, I certainly would not want her representing it!!! PS: I later spoke to my sons who verified that Susan, was not the associate that checked them out when purchasing the cup. Susan is an older white female and they were checked out by a younger black female. How in the world would Susan know what the other associate did? We've shopped here for a few years every now and then when we need to pick up a small gift. The staff is friendly for the most part, there is however a woman who I believe is the owner that has left us with a bad taste in our mouth on more than one occasion. The store is pretty cramped you've got to watch to make sure you don't bump into anything - a while back my wife noticed a necklace had fallen into her purse shortly after leaving the store and returned to the shop, letting them know it wasn't something we purchased. The staff was less than friendly when she explained what happened making her feel like she shoplifted the item. A simple thank you would have done. More recently we purchased a tumbler and realized the lid was cracked after we had gotten home. Upon returning to the store to ask for replacement lid the woman (owner) accused my wife of breaking it, refusing to except the possibility that it was cracked before we purchased. She begrudgingly replaced the lid but not before giving her a hard time about the whole exchange. Additionally the store isn't very child-friendly, lots of nicknacks, and tight quarters. The two barking dogs are a nice addition when shopping. We love to support local businesses but we'll be sticking to Amazon or Patriot Jacks from now on. read more

Honestly, do not go here. I live in the area and have been here several times; each time I've left either seriously uncomfortable or just plain mad. The service is just bad. Even when the ladies who work there aren't being "rude" per say, they're just not being nice. Years ago I had one woman look at me strangely because I was with my baby brother who she thought was my son, and I would have been very young to have a son at the time. Another time I asked for a specific theme for a gift and the lady walked around to show me things, but after about sixty seconds became so exasperated sounding that I felt like I was doing her some great injustice by asking her to help me. Recently I went there and tried to use the number of a credit card I didn't have with me; granted, I know this wasn't easy to figure out and it was kind of pushing it. But they were so unforgiving and had such an attitude that I straight up just put my item back and walked out of the store. I'm not going back. Overall, the people who work there just don't care for you as a customer at all. If you aren't decked out in Polo or Simply Southern, sip anything but sweet tea from a turvis tumbler, or wear anything but oversized pearl earrings and a fake smile, they don't care. If you do anything but bring a product up to the register and pay the exact amount without saying a word, they don't want to deal with you. Not the way to run a store, in my opinion. I have a friend who is a die-hard college sports fan so I went into Uncommon Scents to buy her a birthday gift. They had a HUGE selection of unique sports gifts, everything from car coasters, to pasta salad, to jewelery. As expected prices were a tad high ( e.g almost $7 for collegiate-themed pasta salad) though this tends to be the norm for this type of stuff. They had unique offerings and even kindly offered to wrap my purchase in the sport team colors free of charge. They also had pro-sports gifts, candles (perhaps reason for the name), little nick-knacks, wine glasses, etc. A great store when looking for gifts! I've had several "not so great" experiences at this store and yet I went back for the last time. The owner either follows you around like you're a thief or she is rude to her employees. Trying to be cute I think...but what adult shines flashlights in other adults eyes??? The store is so jam packed it difficult to move. Spend your money somewhere else! This establishment does not treat ALL customers with respect. They might as well put a sign out front saying "Whites Only". My son (who a mix of White, Black, & Asian) visited Uncommon Scents on 12/30/2020 with 2 of his white female friends. The attendant (50 or 60 years of age) followed him through the store, keep in mind there were other customers also in the store shopping. After following him for several minutes, she finally asked what is he looking for. My son responded by telling her that he was trying to help his friend find something. The attendant then asked the white female friend what my son was looking for. She didn't bother asking the friend what she happened to be looking for. The friend said that he was helping her find something. The attendant then began showing the 2 white female friends Christian gifts. As if to say, they needed Christ in their life. My son had had enough and asked his 2 friends if they could just leave the store. My son is 16 years old and learned a hard truth this day. Racism is real! After reading several reviews, it would appear my son's encounter was most likely with the store owner herself. I will continue to share this incident on all platforms so that anyone who has any shade of color to them will be warned of the racism they may experience when walking through the doors of Uncommon Scents. read more

Assuming the owner was the lady in the store today that many have referenced. She "checked in" on us shopping but it wasn't a warm and fuzzy type of thing. They could not have more signs posted about their "kid" policy and "breakage" policy. This is not going to earn them any long term shoppers. People are willing to spend money where they feel appreciated and welcomed to support locals. This place gives such a weird unwelcome vibe from the front door with many "you break you buy" signs and "watch your kids" that I will not be back. I will just shop online for this stuff. Came to the store today to buy some Atlanta Braves items. There were signs for 50% off on certain sporting items so I wanted to see if this particular item was on sale as well. I asked an associate who went to check. As I was waiting the owner came up. I asked her the same question. She told me the area I pulled the item from was the "baseball section " which didn't really answer my question. When I asked again she took the item out of my hands put it back on the shelf and rudely said "no". I walked away as clearly there was no communicating with the owner. I still bought a few things and when my husband and I were checking out I stated to the owner that before she treated me so rudely and took the item away from me I was still planning on buying it regardless of the price. I also said she came across as quite rude. She told me that she was "kindly assisting" and answered all my questions. I then reiterated that she didn't answer my question and just took the product out Of my hands without asking if I still wanted it. Her response was "well I guess I can do nothing right, I'm wrong". NO APOLOGY!!!!!!! Proceeded to ignore me and only speak to my husband in a very condescending tone. Not making any eye contact with me. Unfortunate for her, every visitor we have ever had in NC we bring to her store. NO LONGER. Clearly by all the other google reviews there is an issue. And it is this woman. I was just hoping she would look at how she treated people and maybe change some things considering she is a local business owner. But clearly she isn't that introspective. Thank goodness there are other gift shops around town with friendly staff and kind owners. Should you choose to make a purchase from this store make absolutely certain you get a receipt or gift receipt before you leave. I have never been offered any type of gift receipt to go with any purchase I have made in this store. The owner Connie and her employees were quite rude when I attempted to exchange a pair of shoes with the TAGS still on them. Exchange-NOT return. She knew they were a part of a multi item gift put together for a birthday but instead launched into a story of how they have shop-lifters and then started to lecture me about how people should ask the gift giver for their original receipt so they didn't have to enforce this rule. I went into this store for the first time just before Christmas, so it was, obviously, very busy. There is so much stuff packed into that tiny space that it is near impossible to move around... but that's ok, because the wares for sale are lovely! Everything is priced at your typical boutique prices (expensive), but the owner & staff seemed friendly enough & were offering hot cider to the shoppers. I will NEVER shop in this store again! I purchased a PSU Tervis cup for my husband for Christmas on 12/21. I went in today (literally 10 days later - not even 10 business days and not counting them being closed on Christmas and New Year's Day) to exchange it - I wasn't even asking for a refund. I was immediately told by the sales lady that I was past the 7 day return period. I didn't even know this was their RIDICULOUS policy! She asked if I wanted to speak with the manager and I said yes. She came back and said the manager said I could not exchange the item for a different Tervis cup because I was past the 7 days. She then asked if I wanted to speak with the owner so I said yes. I heard this nasty lady say "Where is she?" - referring to me. She very sarcastically stated I was past the 7 days and refused to let me exchange the cup. I told her that was ridiculous and she smugly stated that they had extended the return period until December 31st but I had missed that date. I told her I would never shop in her store again and I would be sure to let everyone know what terrible customer service they have!
