I LOVE this place. I always go here after Chicago Outfit Roller Derby at the Fieldhouse. I have also been here at other times and It's always low-key. Great beer list, knowledgeable bartenders, and the guy with the Harry Carray glasses that works Saturdays plays great underground hip hop from is ipod. I hear it gets crowded late, but I'll keep justifying them being open early. read more

New management is great. Never gave two craps about this bar until the people from Sub T took over. Carlos is great and always takes care of his regulars. Becky is the bomb. Cool bar, cool bartender and nice laid back vibe. Plays a good set of music usually 60's pop before 2am, after 2am it gets better with some smooth laid back electronic indie grooves. Board games and most of all cheap drinks and nice specials. We don't mind starting out here and ending here because the music isn't blasting and its not super crowded so you can carry a conversation with your homies.. My Favorite bar and bartenders, and it's open late night and yes it does get pretty crowded after 2am. Bar opens @ 4pm till 4am Mon-Fri and till 5am on Sat. No real drama or overly drunk idiots at this bar ,you can hang with a friend and chat without being bothered. If you prefer that than there is next door. :) As in you won't have much of a choice with some of the drunken dummies here. Things have changed some since it changed owners and was totally remodeled. Less hillbillies, more teeth and actual doors on bathrooms. read more

If you go here early (meaning before midnight), chances are good you can talk the bartender into borrowing a game of Scrabble from behind the bar. The drinks are good at decent prices and the bartenders are very nice. One even plays whole obscure Depeche Mode albums, which ranks up there in my book. read more

I don't know if I understand the appeal of this place, other than it's hours, but I suppose one could start the review of most 4am bars with that statement. They have decent music and serve decent beer at decent prices. Not a bad neighborhood spot, but I don't really see it as a destination on its own. Checked out the late-night scene at Underbar this weekend and was pleasantly surprised. As one would imagine (since it was, after all, 3 in the morning) there were some unsavory characters...but there were also some really nice people just hanging out, enjoying their beers. I like being able to go to a bar and having the option of striking up a conversation with a stranger without feeling uncomfortable. So that was a plus! And they have Gumballhead on tap! The go-to spot for vet techs and assistants after our late shifts. The atmosphere is no frills and weathered, the kind of place bank robbers might plan their heists in at one of the far off booths. The 2 AM crowd is intoxicated but usually harmless. Normally I just head home after a shift, but because it was a particularly rough night (2 foreign bodies, x-rays on fractious cat, 3 dogs ingesting weed), I tag along with another tech. Underbar is a nice cozy small bar, with friendly people and great selection of beer. Parking is hard and the hours are great!

I walked into this place for my first time. Im greated by a female bartender, i order 2 drinks and 1 fireball shot. My total is $27.00. I notice how busy she is, and myself working in the industry, I tip her $10.00. Less than 15 minutes later, my friend stops by and wants a drink. I grab the same female bartender's attention and say, "Can I have a Remy and Coke?" She smiles and nods and begins to grab a cup and out of no where her coworker male bartender who is a bald short hispanic man storms towards me and goes, "NO! YOU SAY PLEASE". I stood quiet for a second not understanding why this man is so angry and then I reply to him, "Can I Please have a Remy and Coke" and he replies "NO!". The woman bartender does not even look at me and begins to walk away and never serves me the drink. Then i think to myself, why do i have to say please in the first place? I was never rude when i ordered a second drink. I have to PaY for this drink and then I am expected to Tip after this drink is made but yet you want me to say please as if this is a free gesture or courtesy given. I swear i would understand if i was rude but i was not. I had just tipped this woman $10.00 for 2 drinks and 1 shot ??? Then i was ignored for the rest of the night. Hey.. it was my First time going there and i SWEAR it will be my LAST. Anyone is better off at Bluelight. They have 2 bars and have 2xs much more the space AND they are never rude when serving you. Do not go to this bar. You are better off elsewhere. read more

This place is located sort of equally inconveniently from the "big three" Chicago northside neighborhoods (WP/Bucktown, Lincoln Park, and Lakeview) but honestly that's one of its charms. You get a crowd of folks who are fairly determined to be there, even if they don't get there until 2 AM (I keep my street cred by arriving promptly at 1:55). Makes for a good, fuzzy-brained dynamic for a nightcap, but the real reason I like this place is because they have a way above-average beer selection. read more

A no frills place to grab a drink and converse. I found that it had a relaxed atmosphere for a late Friday night after 2AM and the drinks were cheap. It wasn't all that crowded and we found a table right away. Basically, it's a dive bar at the Western and Belmont overpass, but it's worth checking out if you want to keep the drinks going late into the night. I'm going to avoid the nearby Blue Light bar as when we pulled up to Underbar, the sidewalk outside of Blue Light was covered with bros (awkward stares and vibes had by all). read more

like the continental only smells more like a restroom. only thing going for it is the 4 am license and the "diverse" crowd so one never realizes she is technically in lakeview. people are druuuhhhhnk here. despite its location *under* the western avenue overpass (clever-clever), one seems to always be able to hail a cab. i think the assy cabbies know to line up and take advantage of the 4am'ers. I went last night and really enjoyed myself. My friend and I sat at the bar and were able to have a full blown intense conversation without anyone bothering us or the music being too loud. It was out of the way so it wasn't even remotely crowded (which I prefer). The bar tender was awesome and approachable. The other patrons were pretty respectful and adult for the most part. I will definitely go back if given the chance. read more

I love this place and Will was awesome. W-I-L-L. Triple word score. After an awesome game of Scrabble, my friend and I are grinning ear to ear. Will was the bartender tonight and he totally made our night. He recommended an awesome beer and even let me try it before I bought it. Where else do you get awesome service like that? And, 20minutes in my friend was raving about the awesome jukebox, only to find out it was Will's Ipod. Awesome bartender and good taste in music...wow. We had a great night. A solid 4am bar. In fact it's the one I tend to go to most often now that the smoking ban is in effect and you don't have to wait in line to get in (or out for a cigarette). The clientle seems to veer between rockers and college kids, so sometimes they sort of rub each other the wrong way so interparty socializing isn't huge, but if you're just into a late-night bar to spend with some friends or the pal you just met before last call at another bar, this is a good place to head towards. read more

If you're into crowds, go late.. that's when all the clubbin' hipsters show up.. like midnight or later. If the pickings are slim in Lincoln Park or Wrigleyville on a Saturday night, this is my favorite place to go if I'm still up for catching a lady for the night. i had a conversation recently with friends in which we discussed the fact that if the place were to close tomorrow we wouldn't mind at all. i don't hate the place but the choice to come usually comes at a point where we all want to stay out but don't have the energy to head up to carol's or down to estelle's. therefore we battle the sardine can of the crowd, the expensive beers and by the time we're halfway done with our first drink, decide we'd all be much happier just going calling it a night. read more

If you like to drink with cool people and listen to good music this is the place for you. They have really good beer and also cheap beer, if you prefer. They are open until 4am, which is also sweet. Warning though, if you are lame you may not like it there. read more

This bar is awesome. Hosted a birthday party here and they were super super accommodating. Great beer list. Love the vibe there- it's divey but clean. Staff was friendly. Music was the right volume and the DJ who took over later in the night either really gauged his audience well or just had damn good taste. I will be making this bar part of my regular rotation. read more
