Although, the food was great and the kitchen staff were very kind! My experience here was absolutely unpleasant. The server if I'm not mistaken Brian was very passive aggressive. I ordered Poutine fries and unknown to me there was pork on them, which I'm an allergic to. I let that be known to the server and he rudely told me there was nothing he could do and to pick it off. In this moment I felt so belittled. It wasn't till after I let it be known I was allergic, he replaced them. What a unique and amazing experience. Loved the atmosphere and the service was exceptional. The food was unique but so delicious. Everything was well cooked and well prepared. We started the meal with the kalbi bossam and chicarrones. I highly recommend both dishes. Of note - the kalbi bossam couldve been an entree versus an appetizer. It was super filling! but a great dish to be shared. We had the Ban Bo hue, Thee PBR pork belly rueben and the pork chops. Our favorite was the pork chops - so tender and well cooked. The veggies that were served with the dish were also delicious. Next Id recommend the Ban Bo Hue served with consomme - what a unique but delicious sandwich! Make sure to dip your sandwich into the sauce. We even ate left overs the next day and it was just as good. By the end of our meal we had no room left for dessert. All the dishes were huge portions and very filling. For Cocktails - you really cant go wrong. We tried the Old fashioned, insomniac, cucumber martini and dani and the giant peach. All of them were fantastic. This is definitely a restaurant I'd return to for drinks and for the food. read more

You need reservations, unless you sit at the bar (if there's space). We were recommended this place by a young gentleman we met at Bald Knob across. He wasn't wrong when he said it was upscale bar food. Most of it is in house made, and you can taste the love of the chefs! Phenomenal! I had the Cobb salad, and it was far superior than just a salad. My boyfriends Ruben was next level!!! We shared the fries as an appetizer. Hand cut super crunchy, perfectly seasoned. Get them, or the scotch eggs. You won't be disappointed. The restaurant really is underground, in the basement. Great food and service. During a time of covid, we decided to grab dinner. I liked how tent was socially distanced. It was a comfortable setting. However, be mindful of the rocky pavement when electing to be seated outdoors. The service was swift. We made same day reservations and waited no more than 10 minutes. Underground Burger: I ordered a medium well burger and it was extremely juicy and enjoyable. It was full of flavor. I have no complaints. The fries were good. I did upgrade them though. They had drink specials. I enjoyed the Moscow mule. It was refreshing and made well. I would recommend this establishment. Parking is a bit of a hassle but overall a solid place for food. read more

Fun underground street location connected to a coffee shop. Unique beer list, the Founder's Highball - be careful, it's pretty smooth & strong. Full menu, I did not eat there, but would. Small town gourmet food. They like to offer unique offerings. It's nice to have quality food in Southern Illinois. Not really kid friendly. Cocktails are good and offer different types of craft beer. Can I start out by saying, HOLY WOW! My boyfriend and I are from St. Louis, and we were both blown away by the food here! The Scotch Eggs were worth an entire meal, but we also ordered the mushroom gnocchi (amazing and filling) and pork belly Reuben (holy smokes! Fabulous tasting BBQ ). I ordered the market mojito (very good!) also got the scotch eggs for an app. They were a 10/10, highly recommended. My date ordered the steak frites and he loved! I ordered the PBR (pork belly Rueben) and it was not what I was expecting. Not a traditional Rueben taste at all, there was so much meat I could barely finish 1/2. Called ahead for a reservation and was met with wonderful customer service. That continued upon arrival with the polished staff ready to seat our party. My jaw dropped experiencing the atmosphere of jazz music, professional barkeep, and wall to wall of smiling faces as another flaming cocktail was prepared. The menu's full of culturally expressive offerings and I struggled to choose with the excitement of what was to come. Ultimately landing on Thee P.B.R. with the upgraded Poutine fries I made a great choice. Rich, crisp, spiced and everything nice. Our youngest is a freshman at SIU so looked for a decent place to eat & have a cocktail while in for a visit. Walking in and seeing the Untappd screens was a definite plus for my craft beer loving husband and me! We were STARVING after the long drive from the Chicago burbs so right away ordered the Scotch Egg, I had a tequila mule (too much beer last night for me) and husband had an Oktoberfest from local only brewery Industry. That Egg was friggin' amazing! Perfectly cooked, silky yolk and delish condiments! My Mule was equally amazing as was the beer. Now on to the entrees! I had the Havana Bistec con Queso: wow! So delicious medium cooked steak, delicious seasoning and a pressed bun done to perfection! My guy had the Schnitzel sandwich. It was an LOL moment as we saw the meat to bun ratio! OMG this was epic AND delicious! I had the fries with a side of their ranch (which was a basil ranch- amazing) Long story longer...def recommend, def coming back!! Great food and drink, lovely interactions with the bartender and a few other patrons, and such an ambient, fun environment. 10/10, no question. Reeeeallly impressed with my visit here. The parking situation is tricky if you're not familiar with the location. Take your time and trust the process. So, my expectations for food in Carbondale were extremely low-- it's a college town and I was expecting shitty food for college kids. As I researched offerings in the area, I was mostly correct. I came to the Underground on a friday night, it was pretty quiet when I arrived for an early dinner (I was dining alone so I didn't want to waste a table during prime hours). Atmosphere-- pretty much what you'd expect for a gastropub in a place like carbondale-- dark basement-y with lots of beer swag on the walls. Big electronic version of their beer menu. I had a beer but that really isn't why I was here (the beer menu was pretty much table stakes for any logan square/bucktown/wicker locale in Chicago.) So here we go with the food: 1) Scotch Eggs. These were not your mothers scotch eggs-- I am going to guess the eggs were sous vide until they were boiled medium because the yolk was more velvety than if I just did them at home-- the chorizo around it was delicious (and homemade?!) -- the presentation was likely the nicest presentation I've had of a scotch egg and the salsa verde under it almost made up for the lack of a nice mustard. (actually, I think mustard would hve sucked on these but more salsa verde would have been nice. Something to balance the meats) 2) Pork Belly Pastrami sandwich-- so, I was admittedly expecting some pork belly in slices on a nice rye bread. I got the rye bread but the pork belly that comes on it is like a 2 inch thick slab (I am NOT complaining for the record). The kimchi on it adds a really nice balance to the smokiness of the pork belly that I was not anticipating. I was going to have a chance to have one meal in Carbondale and I am glad I picked this place. The food was great (hit way above its weight class, this would likely be popular in any hipper urban neighborhoods), beer menu was solid but predictable-- the only reason I am taking a star off is that the service was kind of meh. My waitress spent most of her time talking to the couple at the next table (who I am fairly certain were trying to take the waitress home with them) and I was pretty much just a ghost in the place. if I ever find myself in town again or someone (for some reason) asks me for a meal recommendation in this town... this would be the place. read more

I was disappointed with my overall experience at the Underground Public House. As a local restaurant that advertises their partnerships with local farms and breweries, it's a shame they choose not to serve wine from any of our numerous local wineries. Aside from their nonexistent local wine selection the food was mediocre. We started with Bo Saam and Scotch eggs. The eggs were good and the Bo Saam wasnt bad but it wasnt something I'd order again. As an entree I ordered the Vegan Falafel Waffle. I've had falafel waffles before and they were delicious, crusty, yet maintained the softer falafel interior. This one was not that. It was hard and dry. I understand they were trying to make it into a sandwich but this was very hard to eat and the falafel was hidden by the large chunks of onion tomato and pickle. My suggestion would be to keep the waffle whole, cook it far less then top it with finely diced ingredients and sauce for a much more palatable experience. read more
