They have gay nights twice a month - it's either the 1st and 3rd Saturday, or the 2nd and 4th. Honestly, who keeps track of these things? The crowd is grittier and less pretentious than what you find at those barfy Castro bars (I'm looking at you, Boy Bar). On my first visit, I ran into not one but TWO long-lost friends. Clearly this place attracts the right kind of people. The bathroom is both filthy and kind of exposed, with the crapper next to the sink and only a curtain to hide you. There's a secluded alley next to the building. Fortunately this isn't the kind of joint where people are bothered by semi-public urination. I don't remember how much drinks were but not expensive. I went there for the Killswitch happy hour, which is now every Friday from 6-10 pm, and I must say I had a good time. If your into electronic music this is a good place to be, the residents DJ Javaight and dCOY know their tech-house and minimal and maintain a good vibe that lends itself to dancing or just hanging out and chatting with your friends. The bartender there was nice and they do have cheap drinks, $4 Margaritas, $3 Stella Artois, and of course, $1 PBRs. Its a nice place to start off the weekend. read more

What's great about this place is that they aren't afraid of filling those extra little nitches - They have an amazing Reggae night with one of the best DJs in the city...as well as a Disco night every first Saturday which totally packs the house. The Hip Hop nights are great because the large dance floor and amazing sound system really pump you up. :-) The bar is fully stocked and they are open to making you whatever you want...which is a nice change from those bartenders who look at you sideways when you ask for something complicated. Lots of beers on tap and drink specials up the wazzooo... All the peeps who come here are also totally amazing and nice. I've made lots of random friends there. To be straightforward, I've only been here once. But it was fun and a good crowd, good music. I found a credit card, driver's license, and $25 in cash on the floor while I was dancing, and decided to be a freakishly good Samaritan and return it all. This club is a nice get-a-way from the usual destination that we all know of. What I like about this club is first the clash of 80's and 70's music. The decor takes you back to a simple time in life when knowing, what someone did or where they lived never enter the conversation. I love the mix of the crowd. hip-hop boys,local boys,gutter- punk boys,foreign boys,emo boys, girls, and older guys with tight t-shirts acting like boys. The toilets could use alittle work thou. I think I would have given this place 5 stars about 5 years ago when I first moved to SF and my weekends consisted of druken sweaty debauchery with my gaggle of gays. As I am now older and no longer frequent the End Up, Undergound SF isn't really for me anymore. I had a good time hanging with my friend Greg in the way back, perched on a stool watching the crowds come and go. The miniature dance floor was RIDICULOUS. I fought through it to pee once. It was literally piss poor planning on where the pisser is. While I have no qualms about peeing behind a flimsy sheer in the darkness of a blacklight, i'm sure the crowd, who already are not fans of the vagina, did not want to witness, so I was grateful to the guy in line behind me who was cool enough to stand guard in front of the sheer. But the prices are insane for what this place is. I'm down with underground stuff. Really. But this place.... $3 to go into a room that looks like a transformed garage and smells like it hasn't been mopped in a year. I'm not even kidding- we left because of the smell. I didn't know it was a gay bar till I started writing my review. I didn't notice it that night when I came with my boyfriend and his [straight] roommates. I didn't drink but the guys said the drinks were the "cheapest, most disgusting ones we've ever had." They left their gin & tonics practically untouched. So why am I giving this place more than 1 star? The scene. The regulars seemed to have a lot of fun-- we were there for some 50s style dance party-- and all knew each other. Everyone was friendly and it felt like a party in someone's basement. So verdict? Every Saturday Underground SF is transformed into "Drunk and Horny". The atmosphere of this bar/club nestled in lower Haight is a far cry from the pretentious, bubble gum pop clubs that scatter the Castro. While those establishment are fine in doses D&H is all around a good time. The boys are hot (esp the go-go boys who come on around 11:30), the drinks are strong, and a good variety of music. The only downside is that it is a small venue and gets so crowded around eleven that you are bumping and squeezing into people to get around. Note this can be a good think if you know how to properly navigate the crowds. (Hint squeeze in between the hottest boys so you can get your feel on) =) D&H is an all around good time as has yet to lose the energy it had the first night it opened when I went. read more

I'm giving this place 3 stars because it can go either way depending on what is going on there on a given night. They get great local DJs and the crowd will really vary depending on the party. "2-4-1 well drinks before 11." "2 more vodkas, rocks! chop chop!" --END SCENE-- I didn't really boss around the bartenders, cause those guys make large stiff drinks and slang 'em for cheap!! Great in my book!! On the (potential) minus side: -The place is pretty small. -It is certainly a dive (if you google map it the street view picture has a homeless guy sleeping in front of the place, ISYN). -It gets really hot, sweaty and crowded. I say "potential," because: -It's small, BUT it has a dance floor and gets some good DJs -It's a dive, BUT I like dives (it's a good dive) -It gets hot sweaty, and crowded, BUT...sometimes...when the bass is pumping, and people are all hammered (like 1am-ish), hot, sweaty, and crowded is a good thing! I've been here a couple of times. Each time I'm not that impressed. I don't like to pay covers, especially not for bars like this... and yet I gave in and paid because enough of my friends were already inside.
