Sad to hear the Make Out Room is closing soon. I know so many folks have plenty of late night stories here - good and bad. A good spot to catch live bands or some raucous drag performance. The bartenders are decently friendly and move pretty efficiently between simple pints to fancier cocktails. The bathroom situation could be better though. Overall still a decent night out to be had. Came in with 4 of my friends, and the bartender who was white, wearing a hawaiian patterned shirt and had a bit of a mohawk hairstyle threatened to take our ID's even though we are all 22 years old. Proceeded to call us out and be rude after my friend did not tip and when my card declined when trying to order he said "i'm getting a bad taste from your group" and would not let me pay. The atmosphere feels fun and unpretentious, and it's the kind of place you can actually relax and enjoy yourself. Came here for a show - "About Last Night" Storytelling Open Mic last week. Love these events. Some notes: -Parking is almost non-existent on a Friday night so plan ahead. -Venue itself was pretty cool with the ceiling ornaments and lighting, space is intimate, and already packed an hour before the show started. -There's only 1 stall in the tiny bathroom - Bar is cash-only (there's an ATM) - Limited seating- you best come early to be able to grab a coveted lounge-style seat in the front of the stage, booths on the side, or you'll be left standing throughout the show. I was slick and grabbed a barstool to face the stage. -There's a water jug with paper cups in case you get thirsty Show itself was hilarious and highly recommend it- just heed the above and you'll have a great time. read more

The bartenders were great. We came here for karaoke and the staff for that booth would constantly turn off the mics when BIPOC people would go up. When I asked why they said we were so loud that we didn't need our mics on. This is not a safe place for BIPOC folks. read more

It has a handful of double seater booths and a few large, open booths in the back with tables and rolling office style chairs along the dance floor (definitely fits the vibe). I got a cheap drink I wasn't trying to spend a crazy amount of money I just wanted to have a good time and go out with my friends. The bartender just opened a can and gave it to me and then got mad when I didn't tip him for opening the can? I'm sorry but if you actually made it, I'd tip but you didn't even do anything. He made a small remark like "wow no tip that's crazy" and then I felt bad and proceeded to try and tip him and he refused it and was all "I wasn't saying that." Regardless of that I went with a 3 other people and we were all POC and the vibes just felt so off. It was filled with white people and I genuinely don't mind that but it felt so off. If the word vibe was to be described as a place this is it. Inside looks tacky yet also weirdly cute. I came here with a group on a Saturday around midnight and it was packed. There is a $10 cover fee in cash. I think it was Cumbia, 00's songs, and some techno-esque music playing most of the time. I still can't accurately describe the ambiance of this place. It feels like there is some intention on a super random mix of music which makes the place seem alt. or jaded hipster energy. It probably is simply just bad millennial era music taste and nothing more. It felt nostalgic, like I was reliving a high school dance. There is a full bar in here, but cash only. There is a Wells Fargo ATM right across the street. There are cans sold individually as well as reasonably priced cocktails at the bar. I got a Moscow mule and an IPA for less than $20, but that's one drink worth elsewhere in San Francisco and so I would say this place is wallet friendly. If you're looking to find something unique to do near midnight with friends in this area, this venue would be a good option. read more

i came here with some friends for one of our friend's gigs on a sunday evening. it was quite cold and windy, typical for january in sf, and we unfortunately had to wait outside in the cold for a few minutes while the crew setup for the first set. we arrived exactly on time, so were disappointed in not being able to enter the club, where we could seek shelter from the cold and wind. once inside, we each paid $10 cover charge. some of us ordered drinks, but there was no menu, so no food service. there were several tables scattered in the back, so we grabbed 2, since we were a party of 6 (later 7). i was happy that my friend's band went on first, since it was already a bit late, esp for a sunday evening. the acoustics were pretty good, and lighting was also decent, since i didn't have any problems seeing each band member from the back. the restrooms, right behind where we were seated, were quite narrow and small, but i was grateful i never had to wait to use the facilities! parking was not too bad on sunday evening, and we were able to get free parking on the street. read more

The bartender (white, mullet, mustache) was extremely rude to my partner when he asked for a drink that I guess they didn't have mint for. He was fine with not having mint, and bartender gave him attitude for still wanting it. My partner didn't appreciate the attitude so he didn't tip because why would you if someone is being rude. Bartender got upset and started to give attitude. We also happened to be the only poc in there at the time. Cozy, intimate, well-decorated, this is a great place for a Tinder date or a girls' night out. They also have a clean bathroom (only one stall.) Service could be better, however. One of my favorite bars in the city - super quirky vibes, great music, feels like the inside of the bar in Twin Peaks (the tv show). The mixed drinks are TERRIBLE tho they put so much alcohol in that they're undrinkable so I only get beers/ciders. Very typical of a dive though which adds to the charm. Tonight I revisited the Makeout Room for one of the only Litquake events I decided to go to this year. It was a music journalist event with Joel Selvin and Sam Barry(Dave Barry's brother). The two writers are in the Rock Bottom Remainders with Amy Tan. The turnout was lowkey but enough. The bouncer was dbag that would get away from me. He kept "babysitting me" only to tell me to get shoes off the "effin" furniture. The furniture is crap and he sucks. I hope I don't run into that bouncer again at the Make Out Room. Yup I love this funky dive. We normally head down on Tuesday nights after Virgil's and sometimes Saturday. Okay, I have to be honest, when I first went to the club with friends, I was thinkin,"No way "! I would never be comfortable in this dive. A lot of single males hanging out front, if I may an alterative crowd to Valencia street. More of a homie skateboardie(it's a word now)vibe, which is not a bad thing. I just tend to like a mixture of folks, so I wasn't sure of the mindset. However once inside that's exactly what I got. Oh and by the way, I now know a lot of the guys and we're kindred spirits now. We hook up at different venues such as the Tenderloin Artist Crawl. The club depending on the night has different music and therefore the clientele varies slightly, however the main focus musically is of Latin origin. I'll stick to Tuesday nights, because that's what I know! The one down side for me is the music. Some DJ's play what they wanna play no matter how the crowd reacts, or doesn't. Get what I mean! Excuse me , you're playing for people to dance and not one person is doing so? So I have to minus one star, being that it can be hit or miss. For instance, one night was all slow 50's and 60's love songs, ALL NIGHT LONG. Boy, was that a difficult night to get through.. I found people were more in to strong Latin beats,70's up dance beats, funk; a bit of EDM. However, when the music is good, boy is it a party. Like a total love in. Not just dancing, but a celebration of life. Everyone dancing together, the type where you can just go on the floor alone and join others dancing. People ages ranged between early 20's-50's, in other words 99, ageless and definite Transcenders(raise above hate). It was definitely ALW,(all lifestyles welcome), which gives it, it's vibrant energy. People are there to have a good time, not hate and judge. It wasn't a meat market either. People dancing together no matter the sex or identify. It's actually great to see men dancing together with their homie and not trip(no biggy), just celebrating! Some people dress up for the night(on a date), most just come as they are. Many come with a 60's - 70's mod looks like Twiggy, the Monkeys, Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Janis;etc. Gonna have to say I've never paid much attention to the décor,(there is none),it's just what it is. Besides the people are what it's about. So full of energy and life, who's looking at walls. I always look around and say, "This is why I love San Francisco." read more

Fun little stage they let you get up on and dance on - Decently priced alc - walkable from the Bart station - crowd seems to be like young adult up to 40 - decent dance space Cons: - cash only for drinks - ONE WOMEN'S BATHROOM. LITERALLY ONE STALL - I tried not to be a princess about this but I feel like it should really not be okay for a bar to only have one bathroom (this didn't happen when I was here - but what if this toilet clogs? What if someone gets drunk and is throwing up in there? What if you run out of toilet paper??) I think me and 10 other basic Bs in line probs whined about this situation LOL. - A lot of the music was just house/EDM music that you can just bounce to but not really dance to. Not sure who was DJing that night. Literally recommended one song and they told me to stop being a "control freak" and pushed me off the stage! I almost fell!!! Oh Make Out Room, how I love you. I've been to Make Out Room quite a few times since it is in my neighborhood. I love the decor, atmosphere, and all of the variety of music and DJs that they get to come out and play every night. There is a ton of seating both at the bar and booths and tables they have. My favorite music nights are definitely Soul Finger and dance parties! Some nights you come and it'll be dead but it is still awesome to be able to chill at the bar and listen to the vinyls spinning. Other nights you come and it is packed to the max and everyone is dancing! The crowd is definitely mixed and it is super fun. I've never really had a bad experience with a bartender, sure sometimes it is hard to get a drink because it is hella busy but they are always super nice and know how to make a stiff drink. Drinks are very reasonable and strong. It is cash only but they have an ATM inside so don't fret. read more

I went to this bar on New Year's Eve to celebrate with my girlfriend, but the experience was incredibly disappointing. I ordered a mojito, and the bartender who seemed annoyed and rude before I even ordered, told me they didn't have mint. I tried to be understanding, but the drink I received was small, watered down, and definitely not worth the price. When I selected "no tip," the bartender, who was white, asked in a rude tone "What's wrong with the drink?" I calmly explained that I'm a broke college student and couldn't afford to tip this time( I always tip when I can). His response? "Should've stayed home." That comment stung. It felt entitled and dismissive, but worse, as a Black man, I couldn't shake the feeling that there was an undercurrent of microaggression in how I was spoken to. Instead of treating me with respect as a customer, I was made to feel out of place and unwelcome. No one should have to endure classism and subtle racism when trying to celebrate a special night. This experience ruined what should have been a joyful evening. I would not recommend this place to anyone, it's in the heart of the mission but there was only white people at the club, which says ALOT. read more

Second of all, people really were making out here and I arrived fairly early, around 9 pm on a Saturday. Congratulations to all of you folks out there getting that lip. Anyway, I loved the atmosphere here and all of the attention to detail when it comes to decor, right down to the dresser onstage that serves as a turn table for whoever is in charge of music for the evening. I've got to hand it to Jessica T. She's absolutely right that Make-Out Room is all about the right bands on the right nights. From the outside, it looks pretty dumpy, like the kind of place where you would absolutely not have a good time. Of couse, sometimes the best dive bars can turn out to be amazing, but this place just looks dead, particularly if you're showing up earlier. But a friend's band was playing, so we ventured in. Warm, welcoming, not too busy, tinsel and lights dangling from the ceiling, good drinks... The sound was OK, although the red light was a bit much (a photographer's bane), and we had a good time dancing during the show and hanging out after. I think I also tried watermelon beer here for the first time, in a can no less. Win. read more
