Good spot for an intimate show if there's an artist playing live. Otherwise, this wouldn't be my first choice to go to on a night out, considering that I'm not a teenager anymore. My favorite DJ who spins is Miles the DJ hands down, he plays great indie sets you can dance to. Cons: for some reason every time I am here, some type of drama in the crowd breaks out. It is 18+ which explains a lot. Either there needs to be better security or they need to filter out the crowd better. Another con: they charged me $3 for a SODA once. First time i have ever been charged anything for a non-alcoholic beverage in a bar. Extremely lame. One pro: I remember I lost a bracelet when the place closed for the night, and some of the staff there were really kind enough to help me look for it. Getting my Brit-Pop & Indie Music-Dance on! SITREP My buddy Joe Sparks first took me to Popscene when it was at 333 Ritchie in San Francisco back in 1999. It has since moved several times - sometimes it's own event at a venue, other times as one of the rooms in conjunction with another event at a venue with two rooms - but always it has been provided some of the best, most fun, most frenetic dancing environments. Now it has found a home at 155 Fell Street. SETUP For those who enjoy a mix of music ranging from classic Brit Pop (and yes I do mean the Beatles and Rolling Stones) to more contemporary artists ranging from Oasis in the 90s to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the Killers (these are popular in rotation), then you have found your Mecca. It should be noted this is an 18+ club, and it's on a school night (Thursday). So what a great place to find all the bad boys & girls. Gee! Thursday Night Dancing With Guy # X At 11:58pm, we found parking on the sidewalk a block and half away from 330 Ritch Street, so we chilled out in the car and to do a little predrink -- each enjoyed an ice-cold bottle of Corona. Guy #3 was very popular last night at Popscene, he knew the bouncer and several other people at the door. There was a cover charge, but we just walked right in :-)! There were a lot of people dancing, so we decided to do a bathroom break and get a drink first. The line to the woman's bathroom was so long that I decided to wait and go after I two beers. They had PBRs in the can which was totally rad! It was $3.00/can, but I didn't mind it because it was easier to dance with. Wow, PBRs in a can at a club/bar... that's the first for me! There are two separate rooms, two bars and places to sit and tables scattered all around. Also, there are pool tables and a dart board. I sure don't listen to indie rock, but I was having a hell of a good time gettin' my groove on, plus my date knows how to move! Walking through the dance floor was a bit crazy because it was so crowded, but he made sure to hold my hand so that I did not get lost. We finally settled at a spot on stage and danced our asses off! I had an amazing time at the Last Popscene Dance Party of the Year last night and not just because 3 guys and 1 gal hit on me. It just made me realized how much fun it was to dance, especially with good company. I would totally go back here often if it was 21+ instead of 18+, but I guess I would not mind it much because many of the younger crowd were hanging out with their friends. I wanted to watch "Rocky Balboa" on DVD and he wanted to spend some time alone with me, so we left at 1:10am. I was surprised that the place was still packed and people were still coming in to dance and drink. It's now 5:52am (Friday morning), I've had a long night/early morning. I'm going to bed... I'm 24 and I feel ancient when i'm here. Still, if I wanna go to a place where I can sing every song and rock out like there's no tomorrow, I make do. I've seen some great bands here like the killers, the futureheads, and razorlight...it's odd though because there are two huge poles in the center of the room making the view less than desireable. My roommate Raleigh always told me Popscene was a great time. Knowing that it was kind of a dance club/bar and it was 18 and up, I was a little skeptical. But about a week ago I passed my MCDST certification and boozing and celebration was in order. It just so happened Raleigh and Brooks were heading out to Popscene. I had a cranberry vodka, a shot of Jack and left the house with them. There was a 10 dollar cover (I actually hear the cover is usually 4 bucks), I paid comfortable in the knowledge I probably wouldn't be breaking the bank tonight. I just pounded a beer in the alley behind Ritch, and had another vodka cran. And really the best advice I can give before hitting up Popscene is to have a few drinks at home or at a bar. Because once inside the drinks are expensive, and a bit weak. But once that alcohol hit us, we hit the dance floor and didn't return till 2am. It gets a little hot with a crowded dance floor, but everyone was friendly and all about having a good time. Parking was easy. read more

Rickshaw Stop is a just plain solid venue but Popscene take it up a notch with an excellent draw, solid acts which are hit or miss (but from my experience more the former than the latter) and drinks that more than make up for any cover. read more

I went here for my first time last night and had an awesome time! This is a way different experience from your typical hip-hop/top 40 club, but I love that. A live band played (Plushgun) and they were great, I'm sure they'll make it big soon. Loved the music they played, MGMT, Kings of Leon, Vampire Weekend, plus a lot of 80s retro. I had absolutely no problems with the bouncers, they even held the door open for us on our way out. The bar service was prompt as well. The food window served wings, belgian waffles (?), fries and other munchies that sounded good. As for the crowd, I love that they dance like they don't care, so everyone else should do the same, and not be a lame ass and judge others. It's for a certain group of people, but that group probably worships this place. read more

Seriously- the BEST place to be on Thursday Night!!!!! This is the best place to see a new, up and coming bands. I have been going to Popscene for well over 3 years now and my musical eyes have been opened. Aaron Axelson does the best job of bringing hot UK acts to the bay area for all our wanting ears. Sometimes I just go there to dance the night away to the great music that played before and after each of the bands. The Dj's are great Aaron, Omar, Miles and Nako do an excellent job at getting people up and moving. The crowd is always different each time that I go, from Hipsters, to scenesters to Goths and everyone in-between, basically everyone is welcome and usually dressed to kill. It is fun to be able to dance and not worry about being man handled or approached by douches. The age range is a good mix, the younger kids 18+ all maintain and the older crowd gives a nice maturity to the venue. read more

This is probably my favorite place to go clubbing thus far. The atmosphere is really chill. Not gross or ghetto at all which is surprising for a place that's 18+. They played a bunch of songs I didn't think I would ever dance to. Kind of indie, kind of electro, some remixes of some of my own favorites (Killers, The Strokes, etc). It was definitely fun and interesting. This time, Foster the People were going to guest DJ. They didn't get there til maybe sometime after midnight but it was still fun. They have couches around so if you get tired you're free to hangout there. Water is free! I hear this venue is a creeper den because it's 18+? Oh well I was here to see BLAQK AUDIO open the new year with the first POPSCENE at the new Rickshaw Stop location!! The bar was easy access with friendly/fast bartenders with reasonably priced drinks. The venue is in the Tenderloin soooo I'll leave it up to you to think about the location/surroundings. Aaron Axelson is an awesome DJ and I'm so glad I was able to make it to the first POPSCENE of the year at Rickshaw! I'm definitely going to keep an eye out for bands/artists I like to come back here. Popscene and I have a decent relationship. It is a reciprocal one. Whatever I put into Popscene I will get out of it. When I was 18 this place was amazing. It played music I liked, music I need to like, and music that was so obscure I am sure I liked in a past life. Now, I am 22 and my feelings for popscene have also developed just as much as I have over the past 4 years. I have come to realize that I can have amazing nights watching that band from the UK that few have heard of, dancing with friends while trying to not spill my drink, and checking out other people who are probably not checking me out. Or I can have off nights almost getting sick because of the condition of the bathroom, not being able to dance properly because of the sticky floors, and looking at the the kids around me wondering how the hell they managed to get past the bouncers. That's another thing. The bouncers at the door are strict with ID's. I have been on both sides of this. The good-them being friendly and wishing me a good night, then later sparking up a bit of conversation. The bad- having them question my horrible passport and why I am 20 and without a proper California id. Here is a word to the wise for those who want to enter into battle with them, DON'T. You won't win. Just be nice, don't say a word and definitely sober up before you reach the front. I have had plenty of laughs when they tell a kid he can't get in and that kid asks "bahh whhyyy? Um not drunk." Aaron Axelson has managed to be consistent with the talent he brings in so on that end don't ever expect to be disappointed. Oh, and drinks are about average compared to other clubs of its type in San Francisco, which is pricey. They are remodeling later this month. So I will be excited to see what they do. read more

Hmm...18+ club, plays a lot of indie music, blah blah blah. I'm not too fond of this place for personal reasons, but I'm trying to be objective. If you don't mind the crowd here, it can be a pretty fun place to come to. If you're into the genre of music they play, you'll be happy to hear all of the songs you know playing while you're in there dancing. They have a lot of cool bands that come through and cover is pretty cheap. Downside is that the line to this place gets ridiculously long and they pack everyone in there. It gets hot, random water dripping from the ceiling, and lots of being pushed around. I was in front for Calvin Harris, and there were girls literally pulling on my shoulders trying to get me away from my coveted spot so they could get up front. When that didn't work, they did the "dancing while accidentally beating your body with flailing limbs" approach. Thank goodness I've had crowd control practice, and frantic jumping up and down with my arms in the air while rocking my upper body back and forth got those beezeeys off my back. Grace: 381 Skanky Girls: 0 Their dance parties are pretty fun too. There's not as much as the grind and bump going on, and I've never been randomly groped either. Oh yeah, it helps if you dress like scenester when you come here, you'll fit right in. Especially if you're older, you can hang out with the 30 year olds who are wearing skinny jeans, mohawks, multiple piercings and tattoos, and huge sunglasses indoors at night. read more

If you're 18 or 16 with a fake ID this place rules. But if you're not than its a joke. Expensive drinks that are made poorly and everyone there seems to act like their farts don't stink, which is ironic because it stinks of farts on the dance floor. So yeah it does double as a really small venue but meh... The DJ plays the same list of music every night so it gets boring. I just grew out of this place i guess. read more

Catch the "it" bands here for cheap now, because next year you (and everyone else) will be paying more than $40 to see them at Bill Graham Civic. Popscene has been around for over ten years and their resume of live bands is an impressive list of who's-who in the indie scene. Aaron Axelson, creator of Popscene (and Live 105.3's Music Director) has gotten tons of bands to play at the tiny venue, including names like The Killers, Muse, Amy Winehouse, Editors, Bloc Party, Lily Allen and Shiny Toy Guns. The thing is, Popscene usually gets these bands here before they have "hit it big." So for a cover of $5-$15 (it varies on both the act and if you are 18+ or 21+) where else can you get a head start on those must-see live acts? Popscene has an eclectic crowd of people. I'm reluctant to say that it's a "hipster scene" because 1) I'm sure I fit the hipster stereotype myself and 2) It isn't your typical hipster crowd. Yes, you'll find the boys in girl's jeans with bleach blonde hair flicked over their eyes and the girls in polka-dot dresses in retro-cuts. But you'll also catch the group of rugby boys chugging beer. The awkward girls in Abercrombie tank tops. The Popscene Ninja. The freshly eighteen and the the 18x2 crowd. That's the beauty of Popscene, there is no dominant crowd or scene. Everyone is welcome. Everyone can dance (and honestly, no one cares how you dance.) Parking around the area is easy (Park on 3rd or 4th and walk to Ritch, an alley-like street off of Townsend.) DO NOT PARK ON TOWNSEND! At Midnight, street cleaning comes and YOU WILL GET A TICKET. Doors usually open at 10:30, although they can open earlier, especially if a more popular band is performing. That being said, the line can be long and slow-moving. And, it goes without saying, don't be an ass to the bouncer. He's chill and if you're chill, there will be no problems. (i.e. if you're under 21, don't act drunk. you won't get in.) I've been going to Popscene for a few years now and I'm glad it's part of my Thursday night routine. I see familiar facesand dance the night away. Sure, you have allowed me to see some great up and coming bands like the Dandy Warhols, Maximo Park, and Stellastar* in an intimate setting. And sure, you play music that I really like. But you've changed over the last 5+ years, and not for the better. What it comes down to, dear Popscene, is that we're not in the same place anymore. I know you like 'em young and I am positively ancient by your standards. My pointy shoes will never be pointy enough for you, my jeans never tight enough for you, and my eyes never heavily lined enough for your taste. Stick with your scenesters...it's what you do best. So.. imagine this ... the Kooks are playing in San Francisco!!! Wooooo hooooo!!! Me = very excited. They are like a happy versio of the Libertines! Anyway .... Popscene .. it has to have the moodiest bouncers ever! No smile , no acknowledgement ... i even tried my biggest most teeth bearing grin ... not even a flicker Pah! The crowd is pretty young and it got packed but it was cool . Theres pool tables and a dart board and it seems to have a pretty British following you get the queens english ringing in your ears at every turn! I like coming here every now and then. I've only been here about three times in the past couple of years. Last time I came was Halloween 2009 and the only reason I came was to see French Electro-House act DANGER. This was his first Bay Area performance and he was amazing. The only thing that sucked was that Popscene's sound system was not loud enough for Danger; the subwoofers were distorted the whole night. Otherwise, it was great seeing that this guy had plenty of fans in the Bay Area. I guess the crowd is always a little different depending on who's playing. If it's just DJs, it's usually kids and hipsters who want to dance. If there are bands involved, it's their hipster fans. Danger... Danger attracted young ravers and random nerdy dudes, like me, who love electro house and can't dance. Yeah, Popscene can be fun if I'm in the mood for it. read more

Popscene used to be a whole lot cooler. The last time i went it had to wait in line for half an hour! And there wasn't even a band playing! Then when we finally got inside it was filled with "gankster" white boys trying to "run game" on all the drunk "18" year old girls. Half of the the people on the dance floor were not moving. They were just staring at the afore mentioned drunk "18" year olds flail about. Badtimes. The music is good, although it's very similar week to week. This place is crawling with out of towners and hipsters who decided they hadn't anything better to do on a Thursday night but buy some 40s and come here. What, was the Hemlock crowded? Drinks are horrendously overpriced, which is surprising because they might as well be handing them to me for free due to the day care type feel to the place. This place is pretty alright. They have a lot of bands I like playing all the time, but it was kind of small for that type of thing. The stage is small, and there is this big posty thing right in the middle and it kind of blocks the view for people stuck way in the back. I got really lucky at the Vampire Weekend show, and was practically at the front of the stage. Other than that this place is small, and if I lived closer to the city I would probably hang out here because they have a nice little billiards area, and you can meet some cool folks here. I don't really like the employees there. They didn't really seem too friendly unless you are 21 or whatever. The body gaurds at the front stopped my friend Mike at the door, and tried to get him to admitt he was drunk, when he didn't even have any thing to drink at all..He wasn't even being obnoxious or anything..he was standing quietly with me and my other friend Merideth. I'll start off like this: any club who plays "Boys And Girls" by Blur is the club for me!! My friends and I went during a Thursday night. It wasn't too packed nor too empty. The cover charge was only $10 for persons under 21, which is really really inexpensive for those still in their late teens. The music was a nice blend of 90's indie pop, contemporary pop/rock with a tinge of mainstream tracks. The place was quite small and intimate, so I can't imagine how hectic (and fun) it is to see their eclectic line of bands that perform live. I can't say anything about their drinks since I'm obviously not of age yet :). Overrall, this is the perfect club to dance your butt off if you're between 18-21. read more

This is the first "indie" club I've been to. The British band, The Wombats, was playing...so the crowd was different than the usual--more normal and less indie, according to my "date." There was no line on this day. The interior was nothing impressive...not swanky at all. There were, however, nice big fans which kept me from sweating. During the concert, scenes from bizarre music videos played on a big screen. I'm not sure if this is standard for Pop Scene...videos of clowns, people randomly taking off their clothing, skiiers, and ethnic dances. A little bird told me that there are lots of attractive girls here normally, but it is hard to get with them because they are typically not here to hook up. This is not something that really pertains to me, however, as I do not go to clubs to pick up hot girls. I did not notice many attractive people, but maybe I didn't pay enough attention. The music, however, does matter to me. I quite enjoyed Pop Scene because I'm used to hearing the same "My humps my humps my lovely lady lumps" type songs...which can be fun to dance to, but does get a little repetitive. Pop Scene, on this supposedly unusual day, played lots of Franz Ferdinand, Duffy, Good Charlotte, and the like. There were many songs that were unfamiliar to my rather mainstream taste...but they were mostly kinda fun and dancey mixes. I'd return for sure! read more

Uggh. I am told this place caters to a different crowd generally, but I saw the Ting Tings here last night, and so far, Popscene is NOT my scene. This particular show was 18+ which could have something to do with it. Maybe at 23, I am too old and judgmental to deal with that kind of crowd. I know I used to be just like them and really should be more understanding since it wasn't really that long ago, but that's why I try to avoid all ages shows. Oh well, whatever. Don't get me wrong. I love to dance, I love good indie music and two bars, plus booths and bar seating for cooling down? Yes please! Three drinks totaling $33 bucks though when I know I won't be able to see the band on stage from the back of the room and I already paid to get in and there's actually only one band performing? Ouch. That's a run-on sentence I'd rather do without. I'd give this place another try if a group I really wanted to see came in. I saw that DJs Miles and Omar spin here regularly and they're actually OK as DJs go, so that could get me back in. I don't know. I'm just not sold on the place yet. read more

Other people are on the ball with "hipsters" and "power-tripping bouncers", but I liked this club because 1) it played music by Yelle, New Order, Aha, The Cure, MIA,, and MGMT, and good music is all it really takes to get me dancing. It's also great to go to a club where it's playing music I would normally listen to anyway, and not just junky rap that suffices for an okay beat. 2) although not full of gay couples and singles ripping up the dance floor with amazing moves, at least the club was absent of creepy older men trying to pick up chicks. 3) I don't really look at other people when I dance, so it doesn't bother me that most of the people there are hipsters who do a sheepish shuffle and think they're too cool to get into anything. I went with a group of friends, and we had a lot of fun dancing our own way. Anyway, what is an indie music club without its crowd of hipsters? 4) People near the stage dancing are friendly, even if the crowd milling closer to the bar can be huge downers. (Accidently backed up onto a hipster's sneakered toes , apologized, and she gave me the dirtiest look!) 4) It's pretty cool to watch a band that hasn't made it big. The Hundred Days was very friendly and willing to trade a CD for a good joke. Docking a star because 1) Even though the bouncers let me in no problem, they pulled a friend aside and asked her if she had been drinking underage. She denied it, but they *insisted* that she had. She hadn't. They only bullied her because she was dressed like a party girl. (She got in in the end at least) Bouncers bully the best-dressed girls-- what kind of policy is that? By the way, the girls in front of us got caught using fake IDs. They were told to go. I think their IDs got confiscated. Someone before has said on here that this is not the place to use a fake ID. I agree. 2) Popscene serves its alcohol in glass cups, a pretty stupid idea. Although it sends a cleanup crew around to collect empty cups from the floor, a glass cup broke near the front of the stage, and there were glass shards everywhere. Really unsafe. Entry fee is $10 for 18+, $13 for some shows. Price might be different for 21+ OH, DO NOT PARK ON TOWNSEND. Midnight cleaning will get you ticketed. There is a REASON WHY NO CARS PARK ON THAT STREET NEAR RITCH. (whoops) I'll go again when my hearing returns... read more

I still go on occasion (once every few months) and I always have a good time, although I feel ancient compared to all the just-turned-18 trendy kids. I go to Popscene & I dance all night! I know (& love) about 95% of the songs! I prefer the nights without bands, but there's some great bands playing as well, so I'll go to those on occasion. The downside? YOUNG CHILDREN AT PLAY! Where else can you see the 17 year olds of SFSU begging the bouncers to let them in?? If you're over 22, you'll probably feel old.. ouch! Yes, the kids are alright. Yes, at 24 I feel kind of old and somewhat stalker-like at this club. No, that isn't going to stop me from showing up for some of the best musical acts you can imagine on one of the tiniest, most intimate stages in all of California. Aaron Axelson, the Music Director at Live105, runs this club every Thursday night. Being who he is, he is able to book the most ridiculously amazing line-up of bands to play at this place. Bloc Party, Muse, the Killers...they have all played here...some multiple times. Checked out the Thursday night party featuring Mike Snow (who was pretty awesome!). The venue is in an alley, really hidden. Bouncers gave the 18 year olds in front of us a hard time and kept asking if they had been drinking. He was nice to us, maybe because we're all 21+? The interior is bigger than I expected with a pretty big dance floor, chairs & tables, 3 bars, and a tiny window for SKILLET (good chicken & waffles-I gotta come back to try it one day). It was popping and the dance floor was full of hipsters when we got there around 11pm. Watched the awesome band perform and DJ came back on. We danced the night away next to some funky no rhythm people and some really good ones doing hardcore moves, spins, and even busted out a fan. No one cares what you do and everyone is there to just have fun! Just a warning: They use super cheap alky here for their wells. I'm talking like $5 a bottle vodka that taste like rubbing alcohol, so watch out and order by label. You'll save yourself from the sharp stomach pains and sickness that I went through later that night...ugh (and no I was not even remotely close to being tipsy). I occasionally forget some places use really cheap wells. Overall, fun experience! Definitely different from the usual club scene. read more

I found myself at Popscene for a Hot Hot Heat show last week. Putting aside the fact that it's hot and crowded (which at times, can be fun), this bar violated my two biggest pet-peeve: NOT ACCEPTING CREDIT CARDS and DISGUSTING BATHROOMS. I apologize as I complain for a moment about how much the former annoys me. It's 2007. Why on earth would any establishment not take plastic? Is it because they're cheap and don't want to pay the 2% to mastercard? I'm not sure if this outweighs the annoyance it brings to customers. And what about those bathrooms? There are places that don't charge cover (opposed to the $15 cover here) which maintain fine hygiene standards in the ladies room. Walking into a puddle of disgusting-ness after pounding cash-purchased drinks out of plastic cups is not my idea of a place I have to pay to be at. Putting aside the fact that I'm morally apposed to supporting places that don't support my Visa, I'll admit that I actually had a decent time here. The crowd was fun and high-energy. And I was pleasantly inspired by the party dresses, over sized purses, and flats that circled the dance floor full of life. My take-aways: drink somewhere else beforehand, hold it until afterwards, and enjoy the time in-between. read more

OK, third time visiting. Wow...lots of old guys and really SUPER young girls. I'm only 23 and I felt old here. It's kinda got the feel of that Ladytron song "Seventeen". Everywhere you look it's girls without bands on their wrists and creepy old dudes drooling over them. Unless a really cool band is playing I don't plan on going back. read more

I was hoping that this place would be different from the reviews. I REALLY did. It sounded like one of those hidden gems that other Yelpers were just ignorant about. Well. They weren't. This is a high school dance party from the 80s. I saw more canvas shoes and painted-on jeans than I can stand for one night. This could be a lot of fun for some people ... but just not the right crowd for me. I was disappointed that they didn't have any live music yesterday either. Live music is a big pull for me. read more
