First time I came here, they kind of nicked my mustache a bit so no big deal. The second time was downright miserable. Ed, or Eddy, took my appointment at 09:00 on a Monday to which I'm taking work off to get this haircut. I asked for a haircut and beard trim. He cut my hair no problem, then brushes me off and lets me off the chair and I say "I asked for a beard trim too," and he says "no problem." Huge mistake staying in that chair. I'll let the pictures do the talking and keep in mind that Ed not only let me out of his chair and into public looking like this, but he took my tip when it was all said and done too. After my longtime barber retired, I needed to find a new place for a haircut. Decided on the Chop Shop as it was close by and well-reviewed. Great decision - Aaron did a terrific job giving me a pompadour. I felt like the mashed potatoes in the dinner scene in Close Encounters: a lump of nothing on top of my head was massaged into a stylish tower by hands driven by passion and vision. 5 star! I recently started coming here when I moved back from college this summer. I consider myself as a hair aficionado. I've been with my hair stylist since 2003 but decided I'd try a barber. I was a bit skeptical based what I was conditioned to believe barbers are suppose to be. Nevertheless, these guys KNOW HOW TO CUT/STYLE MENS HAIR! I've tried about 4 barbers so far, and I find Chaz to be my favorite barber along with the Owner Jason! When I had a miscommunication with one of the barbers where he cut my hair to short and not how I wanted it based on my style. I called back and they were so quick to reschedule me with the owner, Jason, FREE of charge to reshape my hair. Jason came during his off day to redo my hair (7:30am) and even threw in a awesome hair product for FREE! Love these guys, totally make you feel like at home! read more

If I could give "0" stars, I would. I called to see who they're most talented barber was. They said Lyle, and they had an opening at 5pm for Lyle. I called slightly before 3 to make the appointment and received my confirmation shortly after via text. I get there at 430 and wait patiently. At 455, an older gentleman leaves angry, and then I hear that somehow his appointment was cancelled and no one knows how. The man then came back, and guy at the front desk goes to talk to another barber who comes to look at the guy and gives an "Ok" head nod. 515 comes and I'm still sitting, but not bothered by it. Suddenly the other barber (I.e. NOT the one I asked for) asks me my name, and then says "Ok I've got you, come on". Now, I'm visibly confused here because I specifically asked for Lyle (the talented and creative barber). So I sit down as he asks "So what can I do for you?", to which I respond "Well I need something creative and complicated which is why they told me Lyle was my best bet. Can you do what I need?" I explain to him what I need and then he says "Aww no...you need Lyle for that. I can't do any of that." Now I'm agitated. "Lyle? You mean the Lyle that I had an appointment at 5 with? You mean the Lyle that's now cutting the hair of someone that could've easily had been cut by you? That Lyle right there?" "Ummm...yeah. Yes sir. He's gonna have to make you another appointment." At that point walk to the guy at the desk, slam my hand on it to get his attention and say "Yeah, I'm good. No thanks". And he just looked at me and didn't say anything. I had a confirmed appointment, got there very early, the barber I asked for was switched, and then I was turned away...? What a freaking joke. read more

Great place to go for great cuts. For a Barber shop is a very Family friendly atmosphere. I love taking my daughter there and Jason will go over every detail with her before he starts. But out of all the this, everyone is treated like a friend. Never lower your standards guys. read more

I'll never go back to this place, the owner caters to his staff and could care less about what they did to your head. You have to look good for an occasion? I made an appt to get my hair cut. 2:30 6/13. First time customer. They put me with David who cuts women's hair. I was 20 min early. He was 10 minutes late. Then he told me he couldn't cut my hair because he had a full schedule after me & my hair would take a full hour! I have above the shoulder hair. I have pastures. Easy Peezy. Not for David. He canceled my appt while I was in his chair. Everybody else on his schedule was more important than me because he didn't have the time!? They knew I was a woman when I called. Paid a visit here twice this year, the first time on a co-worker's recommendation and the second time an eager return after being away from the area for a few months. The first cut was very pleasing, just the right balance and look I was going for, and led to the all-important "hey, nice haircut!" compliment a couple of times as the 'do settled in. I didn't find my second visit to be as satisfying - more workmanlike, perhaps - although I still enjoyed the experience of being in the shop itself. The facing away from the mirror motif seemed a bit more confusing the second time around, and it wasn't especially clear to me why they maintain that routine. The rest of the decor of the shop is very fun and looks like a construction cabinet. Where the location is not particularly convenient for me at present, I'm not sure if I'll go again, but I'll keep it in mind, and make an appointment in advance! read more

I was a big fan of my cut from one Mr. Miller, and am only saddened that he doesn't work Saturday's, which would be my normal available time. You can tell by the pictures what kind of styling this place is about but even if that's not your cup of tea, all you have to do is wash out the product. I'm blanking on his first name but my barber knew what I needed without my describing it, which is good since I'm awful at that. "What can I do for ya?" "Um, shorter?" I've heard great things about this place in the beginning but now the buzz about it is dwindling. I can't speak for sure though because: - everytime I call theyre booked two weeks in advance or don't bother to answer the phone. - the one time I called and actually scheduled an appointment they had someone call me day of to cancel it as the barber needed the day off. It seems to me they've outgrown their location and need more barbers because when you call and cancel on someone that made an appointment two weeks before - not cool. This place is a throwback, to say the least. A greaser-themed, lug-nut inspired, Rock-a-billy listenin' barber shop, it's my favorite place I've ever went to get a haircut. It's a unique gem from the top down. A laid back atmosphere, personal touch and if you're lucky, a beer while you wait, it's the exact feeling and experience you want out of every place you ever go but never get. The barbers (and they're barbers, not "stylists") are all of the greaser sort. To tell you the truth, I don't know where they find all these guys that fit so well. They're friendly, conversational and take pleasure in meeting someone for 20-30 minutes while they cut their hair. The only negative, which I won't deduct a star for, is organizational skills. With only one person taking appointments which book up early and often, the walk-in schedule can go back as far as 2+ hrs. To be honest, I think they are all surprised how successful the shop has been. Everyone comes out happy. From children to the elderly, everyone who comes in appreciates the personal touch and genuine enjoyment the staff displays. A hint: call ahead, ask them to put your name on the list and anytime you come in in the next few hours, you'll be next in line. A bummer if you're a walk-in, but a perk if you know the system. Overall, an asset to the local Berkley business landscape and at the very least, a fun place to spend an hour. read more

Being from Ann Arbor, and my proclivity to "settle" when it comes to hair cuts, I was a little apprehensive to drive all the way to Berkley for one. However, I heard good things and had a reason to be in the area. My barber was Eric, and although he wasn't the first choice (the other guy that was recommended to me, whose name I can't recall, wasn't in that day), he was personable, down-to-earth, and knew what he was doing. He offered to have me come in sometime for a quick trim free of charge should I not be pleased with the hairstyle in a couple weeks (I have an annoying cowlick and my hair grows fast and thick). When I went to pay, I didn't have cash on me and they don't accept credit. Eric told me I could just pay next time that I came in. It's that kind of place. My bank was just across the street though, so I went over there to withdraw cash and came back to pay. $15 before tip for great service and conversation. I will most likely be coming back. Got my first haircut here at Berkley chop shop and was very disappointed in the results..... I believe the barbers name that cut my hair was Ed, he's average at best. I'll bet you, if I wanted my haircut styled like in happy days, he would've been on point 100%. Best barber shop in metro Detroit. I waited 3 hours to get my hair cut on 12/23. (They take appointments and walk-ins...if you're a walk-in you put your name/number on a list and they call you when they can take you either between or after their scheduled appointments. My fault for not scheduling an appointment on a high demand day. They closed at 6:00 and were probably still cutting after 7:00.) I saw all of the guys cut a few heads. They're all VERY meticulous and take a lot of pride in their cuts. Each of them cut a variety of styles from high-and-tight to that shaggy style 16-year olds wear quite competently. One guy was even coloring and styling a few ladies' hair and also well-done from what I could tell. To give some context, I've been to places from Golden Razor Barber Shop--one 65-year old Italian guy in River Place complex in Detroit--all the way up to 6 Salon--one of Metro Detroit's most highly esteemed salons. If you want any one of the dozens of classic men's haircuts, Berkley Chop Shop is the place to get it. Atmosphere is laid-back and cool...kids get popsicles guys get beers. They never answer the phone. When they do, it's to tell you they can't take an appointment after 5 pm. Do you work office hours???? This is a barbershop, not a bank. Most people are at work. Also, can never get next day appointment or even 2 days. It's usually a week out at least. Not terribly disappointed with the haircut but was not pleased with their customer service. You have to answer the phone guys if you want to create business! Also , try scheduling more barbers after 6 pm, especially on Fridays and weekends! That's when people want haircuts. I moved to the Metro area a year and a half ago and have only been to the Chop Shop since. Prior to that I'd have a friend cut my hair because I couldn't find a joint to trust with my thick mess of a mop. This shop is the only place I'll go to. The wait can be long but they're across the street from the Berkley Front. If you're not into grabbing a pint in the middle of the day, the conversation in the shop is always worth sitting down and joining in. The shop has an ice box full of beers (don't be shy) or a fresh pot of coffee (and always the necessities to Irish it up). Frozen treats for the little ones. I've been clipped by most of the guys there and can say with all honesty that I've always walked out happy. The guys will listen to what you want and they ask questions if your description is vague. I've only recently started to ask for Eric or Dave with glasses and that's only to save my breath when saying what I'm looking for. At $15 for a guys cut, i couldn't get my friend back home to clip me cheaper. We have female friends that frequent the Chop Shop (prices are a bit higher for the ladies) and they know how to keep a smile on the liitle ones faces when they're in the chair. These guys are the best and deserve your business Shops like this just don't exist anymore. read more

Some things are debatable: Best neighborhood bar, best dry cleaner, best Thai takeout, etc. Some things are not. Berkley Chop Shop is the absolute best place for a man to get his hair cut. The barbers are true pros who understand how to make a dude look good. The atmosphere is relaxing and has that old-school barbershop vibe. And the clientele is a great mix of hipsters, older guys, modern-day greasers, dads with their boys, and everyone in between. read more

Nothing special. Was shocked by all the great reviews. I called ahead, made an appointment, when I got there guy told me he didnt have time to do a real "shave" (trim a few days worth of beard) and I should have called ahead.. Pretty sure I did call ahead, wasnt sure how much time was allotted to me or my cut, and how much more would really be necessary? Cut was pretty bad, uneven at best. I pointed it out and he told me he thought it looked even. Got home and washed the hairgel out and ended up wasting half an hour of my life evening it out myself. At this rate, I should get a chair there and start next week if Im lucky.. Only reason it wasnt a one star, the place seemed pretty cool, and it seemed like the other barbers had a much stronger rapport with their customers. I could see maybe I got one of the less talented barbers, but still no excuse. Not sure how everyone rates them 5 stars, either I got the worst barber or others have low standards for a cut. read more

My husband surprised me about 6 weeks ago when he came home with a new haircut! He looks great (swoon) and I have his barber at the Chop Shop to thank for it. Then yesterday we took our little guy for his first haircut EVER. Again, he did an awesome job on the haircut and was wonderful with my son - making him comfortable before the haircut and all the way through. No tears - YAY! The guys who work here are very friendly. They can pull off stellar classic hair cuts for men. They are awesome with kids, too. Love the car theme in the shop. Prices are very reasonable. There's nothing I could say that hasn't already been said - this place is damn near perfect. The atmosphere is warm, the stylists friendly, and the cuts inexpensive. It might be a bit busy, sure, but it's worth the wait, or if you know you'll need a trim ahead of time, you can call and appoint that junk. Went in first time, came out with a great haircut. Second time, disaster. Perhaps it was a communication issue? He asked if I wanted to see scalp on a fade and I said no. I asked to keep length on top, just a trim, and he butchered it, cutting off more than 2" in places. This is the first yelp review I've ever posted, and it's simply because I'm disappointed with the results. Reason I'm giving it 2 star instead of one is because it was obviously a misunderstanding as opposed to lack of skill.
