Went here for the first time this week. I've seen it, as it's right in my town, for decades, but only now went. Bonnie, the owner, greeted me as I came it. Frankly i had long hair and it was starting to look a bit ratty, so i just told her "I'm going short, and I like liw-maintenace hair as I dont like fussing with it each morning." She confirmed a couple of things with me and went at it. About 10-15 minutes later, I had my new cut and loved it. Very friendly, and saved to ponytail for me (I donate them to "Locks of Love") The only reason it's not 5 is the price, while reasonable & fair, is a bit more than I am used to for a barber shop, but then...inflation is a thing these days. Finally got around to writing a review for this place even though I've been coming here here for a year or so. I'm not sure what the other review on here is even talking about... every time I come here I've walked out more than pleased with my hair. Granted, my hair isn't all that complicated, but the fact that they even make my buzz/fade look good should tell you all you need to know. The reason I really love this place though is the atmosphere. There's all these new places around that claim to be "for guys". They have head massages, chicks in ridiculous outfits, etc., and I've never been a fan. To me, Sands is a guy's barber shop. It's always relaxed, everyone is super friendly, and the big flat screen on the wall is always tuned to whatever's on ESPN. They remembered me after my first time there, and always greet me with a smile when I walk in the door. Trust me on this one, this place is a great local barber shop... don't believe me? I can picture this place next to Floyd's barbershop on Andy Griffith. I've been coming here for well over 15 years and know the barbers and they know me. In fact, they know everyone and everything about them - their kids names, grades, vacations you have taken, jobs, and your favorite foods. Really great people. I know there are SALONS all over Royal Oak and similar to Sands, they all have regulars. I guess I just feel more comfortable here. I have received a lot of bad haircuts in my life, but nothing compares to the one I received at Sands Barber Shop. The place is disgusting and unsanitary. I am a dog person, but I don't want a large dog running freely around (and jumping on me) when I go into a barber shop. Furthermore, they have no barbicide or any means of sanitation visible. I literally wouldn't be surprised if the man who cut my hair wasn't even a barber. (They have no licenses visible.) My haircut was so bad, that I immediately had to go to another place and have it saved as best as possible. The stylist where I went to get my haircut fixed at remarked that it was the worst haircut she had ever seen, rivaled only by people who have attempted to cut their hair themselves. read more

I have no idea what Darren from Point Richmond, CA is taking about, unless it is another Sand's Barber Shop in CA. For 30 years, my Father-in-law a professional barber, was my barber. When he passed away, I went from barber to barber for a couple of years. Then I discovered Sand's Barber Shop in Royal Oak MI. about 6 or 7 years ago. I just moved here from Pittsburgh and i went to 3 barbershops in the area and they all butchered my hair. I went to Sands and met a young guy named Michael. He knew what I wanted and he work. Michael can cut, fade, and he uses the straight razor for shaping up the sides. .I would recommend him to anyone that likes a sharp, crisp cut. This isn't some salon with stylists faking to be real barbers---this is a great place to get a real haircut from a BARBER! read more

I moved to Royal Oak back in July of 2013 and I tried one other place then came across Sands. The staff is very friendly and you will get a good haircut and the price is very reasonable. Not sure what happened with the negative review but I have probably had 8 haircuts so far from different Stylists and they all seem to do well. read more

Awesome place to get a haircut. I have been back over the past 8 years and always had an awesome cut.....and my 'mop' isn't always easy to deal with.
