The instructors are really nice and friendly; they are truly there to help you. They are all completely understanding and know where to start helping you. Although its a pretty big price for the sat class, I personally feel that it is completely worth it. They come up with their own materials (which are really good - they're structured like the actual test but a little harder to push you) and provide a lot of other materials. In the sat package I paid for, I got a Writing class and a English/Math class, all of which were super helpful. The writing class involved a lot of practice writing and practice analysis. The English and Math classes were well structured; It isn't held like a normal SAT intensive program. There are classes and then there are workshops. Overall, I think it is one of the best preps I've attended.

Our 2nd daughter started shortly after she was born in 2014 and is still there in a pre-K class. Our experience here has been amazing. Our older daughter never complained about going to school, she made lots friends, some of whom she continues to see outside of LGA and finished kindergarten knowing how to read and fully prepared for 1st grade in public school. Our younger daughter looks forward to going school every day and is having similar experience that her sister had. Through the years that we have been coming to LGA, we have gotten to know the owner/director, Miss Angela, and several of the teachers and administrative staff. It is clearly no accident that LGA is as successful as it is. Miss Angela is always there and takes a very hands on approach with every aspect of the school. Any time we have had a problem or concern, Miss Angela was extremely attentive and responsive in addressing our needs. All of the teachers that both of our girls have had took a genuine interest in their well being. They greet the children with a welcoming smile in the morning and they stay on top of their game in meeting the children's needs throughout the day. The administrative staff is courteous and professional and come across as warm and caring to the children - and they seem to know every child's name...very impressive.

People who are able to come here are likely to get a good dose of the language and have an opportunity to meet a lot of new faces from all walks of life. Tuition was only $50 when it first opened, but now is currently at $100 a term for adults and $75 for kids. For NYC and all academic institutional standards, that is still considered quite the bargain. The teachers will vary each term as most of them are teaching on a volunteer basis, but all are native speakers usually from Vietnam. The classes are segmented into different levels separated by age groups. There are 3 levels for Adults (I, II, III) and one for children. Class materials are minimal, mostly it boils down to class participation and a lot of hands on learning. The Vietnamese language can be a difficult one to master. Though New York is not crawling with a large Vietnamese community like Houston, TX / Orange County / Portland, OR, there is always a need to learn specialty languages that may become useful down the road. And here at the Chinatown YMCA, the Vietnamese language journey can begin.

Classes are offered on Saturday afternoons or Monday nights. Classes are divided into either children or adult. We meet once a week. I enrolled for two semesters, starting with the beginner's class and ending with the advance level. As a native speaker, I never knew how to officially read and write. Taking the VHC classes allowed me to learn the basics of reading and writing Vietnamese. I also learned about the Vietnamese culture and met some fellow classmates who are now my really good friends. I highly recommend taking the classes to either brush up on what you already know or start from scratch. The teachers will work with you to ensure you meet your learning objectives.

This isn't just "keep busy" projects. Jin has a real vision for the progression of each class as well as the arc of the classes. I would say it is unfair to give a harsh review based on a first impression and on a place that is not suited to your personal preference. I wouldn't give a negative review for a steak restaurant just because I'm a vegetarian. That being said, my wife and I visited and researched several daycares in the area before selecting STREAM. We were rather judicious because our son was only 4 months at the time of enrollment and because we wanted him to have a good developmental experience but we weren't keen on putting too much pressure on him to get a "headstart". For example, we visited another daycare which was much larger in size and felt more like a school with desks and classrooms. That's not really what we were looking for. We wanted him to learn and grow and be guided but not be in a rigid environment focused on getting him ready for standardized testing. That is not to say that STREAM doesn't teach their students - their approach is very thoughtful and creative and allows the children to learn naturally, practically and at their own pace. Perhaps more than that is that we trust the staff and teachers there. We can really feel their care and concern and how much they love the children. They are in constant communication and they are devoted to the children. Our child has thrived in that environment and is always happy and excited to go there. We can't thank the staff their enough for the indispensable role they have played in caring for our child.
