Probably the highlight of our trip to the Catskills. Everyone was so friendly and we loved the "Hate Had No Place Here" sign. So come as your are! The beer is flavorful and I recommend "hooking up" your Brookie. Think Michelada, but with more citrus. They have a set menu for snacks so not really a place for a full meal. However, check the website as they seem to have rotating food vendors. We had the vegan nachos with Indian flavors which was amazing. It's a small space but that adds to the charm! TL; DR: the (almost) end of the road is worth the trip. I've said it before: location matters when it comes to microbreweries. West Kill is almost off the charts in terms of both location, ambience, and of course, brews. Tucked way back on a road that provides access to Hunter Mountain trails (not for noobs, folks, you've been warned), and what looks to be a superb waterfall hike, you're treated to an amazing view of the Catskills from the brewery's cozy little deck. I would love to see it again in full fall peak color. The beers, quite simply, rock. There was even an oyster stout on tap when I visited -points for that. Plenty of to go options in the nearby retail space, and if you're lucky you'll catch a glimpse of the Insta famous Teddy The Brewery Cat. They have a rotation of food trucks on site, a fire pit and associated seating. Just a great hang after you bag the Hunter Mountain fire tower. read more

West Kill Brewing Steve and I recently experienced and we walked away fairly impressed! Bury The Hatchet was the name of the pale ale we had which we liked quite a bit! Feels like we don't get pale ales enough as it is oh so easy to just slip into IPA territory. WHAT A GEM! This place makes me wish I lived in the Catskills, although it may be worth the 3 hour drive. The Brewery is hidden away up a hill. There are a few tables inside as well as seating outside, with some fire pits. Lots of people with dogs! The beer was fantastic (my favorite was the doodlebug). This place is a gem and I'm surprised that there's not a many reviews for this brewery. The girls and I stopped by after the rail tour 20 minutes away and we were so happy to see that they offered food! The food shack has quite a few selection which is unusual for a brewery but no complains there. They have a good beer selection with different types and overall, they are easy/pleasant to drink! There are plenty of long picnic tables and chairs around the tables or fire pit. The brewery is located at a secluded high ground where you can see the mountains. The view is gorgeous. There is a gorgeous grey cat raised by the owner and is just so friendly and photogenic. We saw so many dogs brought by the customers so that's always a big plus! They also have a souvenir shop at a barn and I picked up a pair of stemless glasses to bring home. Their logos are cute. read more

When you travel to the mountainside wilderness to meet your girlfriends family for the first time it's a good plus when you learn that the closest local brewery is a mile away give or take. And this fact becomes even more of a good plus when that family proves to be awesome and worth imbibing with! Long before I went on this trip I learned to enjoy West Kill Brewing when my girlfriend was amazing enough to share a crowler of Forsaken Fields that she was holding onto for a good occasion. And even though it was close to a year old you could still taste those fresh notes of creeping thyme and mountain well water in this perfect springtime saison. From that point forward I knew I was destined for a visit, and it proved to be a incredible off the beaten path treasure of a place. West Kill is a family spot owned and operated by a crew who has lived in the Catskills for several generations. And this fact shows in the details of everything they produce, from the impeccable indoor/outdoor brewery space, to the amazing beers. You can literally see the trees, well, and places that their fresh local ingredients were picked up from as you drive along the wooded path and up their dirt driveway! It also helps that the brewery is packed with a cozy indoor fireplace, plenty of outdoor seating arrangements, and all kinds of games to play. Along with the aforementioned Foresaken Fields, other standout beers for me where the Creekside dry hopped raspberry sour, the Juniper Ridge farmhouse saison with its strong after notes of juniper berries, and the AMAZING Devonian Farmhouse Stout which yielded tastes of coconut and vanilla in a dark stout. The holiday weekend meant that we didn't get to sample the meat and cheese boards like I wanted. But that was because they had a featured food truck and live music. Definitely a destination brewery. Not recommended in poor weather but I'm sure it'd be such a cool spot while it's snowing. Spruceton Road takes you on a windy journey through the backside of Hunter Mountain. After five miles of twists, turns, and great views, West Kill Brewing appears just as subtlely as the wilderness around it. The driveway is unpaved and uphill, and the taproom is nestled into the mountainside unobtrusively. Big enough for groups and cozy enough for a quiet beer respite, West Kill is a must stop for anyone looking to disconnect and discover many great beers. The Kaaterskill IPA is crisp and flavorful. Their Oatmeal Stout is creamy and warming, perfect for a cold day. Recommend the Juniper Ridge and the Waxing or Waning hopped ale. Not a bad choice on their menu. Inside is epic - fireplace, tables, horseshoe bar, water, and games. Outdoors has a covered patio, along with a firepit and nearby picnic tables. Pet friendly and if you're lucky, you may meet Teddy, the Brew-cat. He was friendly and seemed to be a celebrity of sorts, considering his face is on a few cans, stickers, and T-shirts. There's food available from a food shack nearby and in the Sap Barn you can find canned to-go beer and endless swag. I snagged a beanie and was impressed with its quality. Friendly staff and clear covid protocols. Tabs cannot be left open, so prepare to close out for each transaction. No cell service and potentially muddy. The place itself is laid out well, some nice size tables if you're a group larger than 4. Tasted about 5 of the beer options, 3 of them I would easily have ordered again, and I even walked out with a 6pk of one of them. This place is 5 miles down a dead-end country road, so you kind of have to admire the confidence of these people that what they'd have would draw a crowd quite some distance. They were certainly right. When you see the sign that says "5 miles" note how it reads like "smile." You understand that better after trying a few of their brews. Bring your camp chairs to sit a bit on the lawn. Picnicking is okay, too, if you want to bring your own beer-compatible snacks. It's friendly, inclusive, fun. The Saturday we were there, they had a trio performing, with gusto, 70's classic rock & roll (inexplicably, they stayed away from the Grateful Dead covers). We focused on the justly famous Kaaterskill IPA, and the Dead Rabbit Irish Stout, too. The Sour ale was excellent, albeit a little low on the sour scale for my taste. La Ruta Del Sol Spanish Food Truck was the resident food source the day of our visit, with excellent empanadas (the veggie empanada was rated very highly by my Deputy Yelpers, while my Carnivore Deputy Yelper rated the spicy sausage empanada similarly). My only disappointment was that the rice and beans (arroz y gandules) was short on the beans and heavy on the rice, but still very tasty. Sorry to have missed the vegetarian food truck, which was scheduled the next day. If you're anywhere close to this location, put it on your itinerary. read more

Country roads, take me home, to the place where I belong, West Kill Brewing, a brewery that feels like home :) At the end of a long, windy and what feels like endless road is the quaint little slice of happiness known as West Kill Brewing. You will undoutably worry you're lost, almost definitely lose cellphone signal, and feel a slight panic that a car's going to pop out too fast around every corner, but that's kind of the fun of driving through the Hudson Valley/Catskills area and finding a gem at the end of it. My group came here for the long July 4th weekend when they opened for outdoor drinks and tacos. We came close to the end of the day so there wasn't much of a selection left but there was an abundance of seating and a really nice scene. My group tried the mulberry sour, the Doodlebug Pilsner and I got a 4 pack of the Kaaterskill IPA. The mulberry sour was refreshing and not too sweet, just the way a sour should be and it stood out compared to sours I had in the past. The pilsner tasted like a classic. I'm not personally a big pilsner person, but this one I'd reach for again. I really really enjoyed the IPA. It was just the right level of hoppy to remind you how good beer can get, but not too much such that drinking it becomes a burden. Really hope I can find some in NYC, but until then I'll be cherishing the last can of my 4 pack with all the admiration it deserves. read more

Very cool Brewery we found by accident. Only downside is, it is way out in the middle of nowhere but that also makes it very rustic and a cool place to hang out. The day we were there they had a band and everyone was hanging out on the lawn.. The only other downside was they only had one food truck and they could not keep up with the crowd so the wait for food was extremely long and they were running out of a lot of the items on the menu. I don't know if this was a normal weekend for them since it was prime leaf peeping weekend so that could have been out of the norm. Great brewery that's worth the stop if you're in the area! The drive felt like it was taking us to an abandoned location and often times felt as if the GPS was taking us the wrong way... but keep going!! Beer is your reward for the trek! When you get to your GPS location.. you may think you're in the wrong place, but look to your left and just up the hill, you'll see a sign that says "beer". Make your way up the hill and you'll see the parking lot for the brewery! Situated in between the mountains, it definitely gives you beautiful views! Brews Tasting room has that lodge type feel with a fireplace inside. The ladies serving were great and gives you great recommendations. They don't have flights but they have 5oz sizes so you can try a bunch before ordering a pint size! They also have their beers to go if you want more to take with you.. which is what we did and brought it back to our hotel. Here are the brews I tried: - Don't Be Kneady - tasted like a heifewizen! Good and easy to drink! - Rusk with Peaches - which is their sour ale. This is great if you're not a huge beer drinker and it does quench your thirst with the sour notes and peach flavor. - Yankee Rose Belgian Dubbel - cherry flavor but not heavy at all. Refreshing and easy to drink. - Black Dome imperial stout - Strong and robust! My kind of stout! Like with all stouts, it's filling.. but definitely packs a punch! Food They do have snacks but when they have a food truck outside, they don't serve their snacks unless requested. The food truck was sooooo good! I forgot their name.. but they served some amazing empanadas!!! Yum!! So if that food truck is there, I highly recommend! I really enjoyed this brewery and their brews! If I'm ever in the area.. First time back in two years, and it was great to return. Set amidst the Catskills in Greene County, just a few miles from Hunter Mountain, the place is amazing. They have a menu of eight or more beers, give free samples, and give friendly service. Today I had a delicious stout, and a honey IPA -- that was a surprise, because I've lost my taste for IPAs, but this one was great. Visited West Kill Brewing on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. Had some tasty beers and enjoyed the incredible views of the surrounding area. Quality: West Kill Brewery is a nice off-the-beaten path brewery. As soon as you notice the dead end sign on the street, still miles from the destination, you know the locale will be different. During my visit I had Are You Open Yet?, Buck Fever, Fresh Coast, Kaaterskill NE IPA, Fire Tower, and Creekside. I really enjoyed Buck Fever, a Vienna Lager, that had such a nice toasty flavor. I also liked their oatmeal stout, Fresh Coat, though I wish I got to try the coffee version. I was not a fan of Creekside, a just tapped Cucumber Sour, which was far too light and missing the typical funkiness of sours. Quantity: Options to order 5oz, 12oz, or 16oz beers. Value: $5-6 for 12oz Draft Beers. Ambiance: West Kill Brewery is located in the small Upstate New York town of West Kill. It is not somewhere you will run into, it is a place you would need to search out. Along a relatively quiet road in the Catskills, its remote location provides scenic views of the beautiful mountains. The brewery has a small cabin-like indoor taproom and then a good sized patio area. A food truck was setup nearby and a fire-pit drew in a nice crowd. And while the music experienced some technical difficulties, once it was up and running it was an enjoyable playlist. Crowd: The brewery was busy on a beautiful fall afternoon with lots of folks congregated around the fire pit. It is both a family and dog friendly spot. Service: Friendly and helpful bartenders. I learned of this place in the fall and have been back several times since. Even before the tap room opened I was in love with the beer and the vibe. It's a little out of the way but the drive is scenic and all part of the fun. I noticed that there are some public hiking trails near by so I plan to make a day trip to hike and hit up WKB in the spring. Since my first visit they have upgraded from serving off a plastic table out front of the brewhouse to a real nice little tap house with tables both inside and out also some snacks. The seating area features some board games, books, fire place and if you are lucky a very friendly cat to cuddle up with. The beer selection isn't huge but covers pretty much all popular styles from IPAs to pales to stouts to saisons. Westkill offers tasters, flights and larger pours plus crowlers of the drafts, some cans and last trip they had a special edition in a larger sized bottle. Worth the trip from Hunter or Windham if you are visiting from out of town. read more

Best brewery and beer in the Catskills! My favorite beers are Creekside and Kaaterskill, but there are so many interesting options to choose from. Patrick, the brew master, really pushes the boundaries creatively with ingredients in a very intentional way, and you can tell by just tasting the beer. It isn't overbearing or in your face like some experimental beer - he really knows his stuff. The taproom is cozy and rustic, with indoor and outdoor seating with incredible views. The location is tucked away in the mountains, like a secret waiting to be discovered. If you are visiting this place is not to be missed, or at least try the beer if you see it in the store. Still love the beers here but the Lis barkingston food "tent" seems to be a staple now most weekends. The $15 6oz burger with short rib and brisket definitely has neither of those two things in the burger. The consistency (big giveaway it didn't have brisket or short rib) and flavor of the burger, it tastes like a normal beef burger with a high fat content so it's tender. On top of that I didn't read the small print apparently. I tipped 20% when I paid and then realized later they added a 20% automatic charge to every order. So needless to say it was quite the rip off. So keep that in mind when you go, go for the beers because they're fantastic beers. Gotta take one star off from previous review. read more

Great location and terrific beer. Place was recommended by my partner's coworker when he heard we were doing a weekend in the Catskills. Suffice it to say we are bringing said coworker a 4-pack back to say thanks the spot on recommendation. It has been a few months since my visit as it was almost a four hour drive. I saw a sign about five miles down the road with an arrow and the word 'beer', it was a welcome one. I was only able to try two beers and then purchased a four pack of Moon Farmer which was delicious. The brewery itself is in a beautify area and built in such a way that it feel part of the surrounding nature and not out of place at all.
