When we got there, Robert greeted us and, when we asked about them, offered to give us a quick tour (we were the only ones there) for a donation to The Third Option Foundation (how could we say no, especially if it goes to an amazing cause?). To say he knew his stuff is an understatement; he made the complex process so easy to understand! The tasting was like a show in itself; between Brian and him, we really got to know their Bootlegger line of vodka, gins, and bourbons. While all of them tasted great, my personal highlights were the vodka and the bourbon cream. Theirs was the smoothest vodka I ever tried that I almost bought a bottle right then and there (waited until after the tasting, of course). The bourbon cream was like a dessert -- sweet, not too heavy, and, for someone who prefers vodka to bourbon, it made me appreciate bourbon more. Following suit with those who recommended it to me, I also recommend it if you're in/near Roscoe, especially if you want to support the local businesses.

The very friendly Taylor was more than helpful and made various suggestions as to what to try. She made the Smoked Old Fashioned with ease (see my videos!) and my friends said they were excellent. You also get to keep the glasses they come in which have engraving on them. I went with the try six and they had seven to try so I gave up the gin. Tried a vodka, rum, two whiskey, and two honey liquors. Half ounce pours each. Realized I'm just not a whiskey guy but one was super smooth. I did like the honey ones, though. After my set of six, I ended up getting a vodka mixed drink and also got a four-pack of of a vodka canned cocktail which is new for them this year, and they decided to go non-carbonated. I would have preferred it to be carbonated but you can just add seltzer. The place seats a couple dozen and they are included on a lot of bus/trolley tours (a lot of bridesmaids parties) so at times it can get loud and busy. If you are under the influence you will not be served. They have t-shirts, hoodies, glassware, and even sell some pieces of the barrels so you can make your own smoked drinks. I ended up spending about $50 for my tasting flight, cocktail, and a t-shirt. I wished they were allowed to sell some small bite foods. It would make this place even better. But the food was so well prepared that it should be recognized. We started with a very tasty pork belly bao with hoisin sauce. Their house salad was a very well presented and interesting salad. But they knocked it out of the park with their entrees: roasted branzino with asparagus in a beurre blanc sauce and a strip steak served on a bed of caramelized onions and mushrooms in a bordelaise sauce. In particular, the steak, ordered medium rare, came out tender and perfectly cooked, and was of very high quality. Finally the sticky toffee pudding cake was served warm and was delicious. I would highly recommend the food here. Kudos to the chef!

The location itself is breathtaking, set in a beautifully restored historic mansion right on the Hudson River. However, the real highlight was getting a behind-the-scenes look at their distillation process. Charles was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate as he walked us through their production of rye, bourbon, gin, and vodka. A must-try is their vodka, which Charles proudly explained is distilled a remarkable 12 times. I can confidently say it is the best vodka I have ever sampled--exceptionally smooth. I was also impressed by their other spirits: Northwest Passage Gin: This gin stands out because it uses naturally soft water sourced directly from their artesian wells. Black Creek Bourbon: I was fortunate enough to sample a limited Founder's Batch of this bourbon. It is truly hand-crafted, made using limestone-softened natural artesian well water. The depth of care and quality put into every bottle is evident, and the personal details shared by the founder made the spirits taste even better. If you have the chance, I highly recommend asking for the tour--it provides an incredible appreciation for the craftsmanship at Hudson House Distillery.

Business was slow so the woman serving drinks offered us a free tasting of their four main liquors: vodka, gin, maple spirit, and rye whiskey. She was incredibly knowledgeable and was able to give us detailed descriptions of each one. I'm no liquor expert but the gin and maple spirit were both delicious. We bought a bottle of each and can't wait to tuck into them later. We stayed for a few cocktails as well and really enjoyed their pleasant tasting room. If liquor isn't your thing, they also offer a few local wines and beers. Highly recommend checking this place out when you're in the area!
