This cafe is in the heart of Ellerslie, we came here a few times for dinner where they mainly serve pub food. Their ribs and lamb shanks are good and generous portion!! However today we are here for lunch! Average food as our poached eggs are little over cooked... not the runny egg york we hoping for, and i must mention I am not a fan of their coffee. Really no coffee taste at all and over fluff...not good at all...

Each surburb lies a best bar to hang out. Union Post is definitely the one for Ellerslie. Renovated from the previous post office, you still touch the mark of the old merging the new. Tin post drawers still keep alive as a symbol. However, mostly act as an icon for this bar. Entering on a cold winter afternoon, greeted by the warm gas fire, with piles of logs by the side, something warm lights up the mood, and also the appetite. Take a glimpse of the environment around, art deco ceiling lamps, vintage mirror walls, rustic chairs all flow in space, making the whole atmosphere with quite a character. Yes, it is named brewery&bar, so beer is essential. Non-alcohol drink also made by the Mac's, try lemon splash, or ginger beer. Wine list is average. But hey, go for beer! As for someone who is not a beer-holic, Latte is not too bad. They put it right in the transparent glass which is such a relief. As for food, nothing more proper with a pizza pairing a draught, or go with the Nacho. Beef mince with melting cheese and chili sauce to match the nacho, you wouldn't seek more. Nice waiter will ask you considerately, how much can you handle the hotness, we have rate 5, 8 and 10 here:) What a style. PS: Every Tuesday try the Quiz night. It would be crowded but fun.

Place has nose dived, raw chips served and staff disinterested. Service was awful, premium price for sub standard product.

The Zookeeper's Son - Bar

Quick back story and fun fact: In 1911 there was a Zoo in Royal Oak! Of course, everyone complained…read moreabout the smell and the sound and never really embraced the beauty of the whole operation until the animals escaped and everything was eventually shut up and sold off. So now we have this voluminous pub with a fun, purple branding that doubles as a throw back to Auckland's past. There is plenty of seating (including the small cluster of outdoor couches everyone is vying for) and plenty of beers on tap. Inexplicably you are only allowed to smoke on one half of the outdoor seats. Staff seem to stay behind the bar unless they are trying to top up your barely finished drinks, which they do with hunter-like efficiency and a portable EFTPOS unit. Slightly too overpriced to be your local-after-work.

We kind of happened upon The Zookeeper's Son. We needed a place to take a bunch of out-of-towners…read moreafter a sports event in Onehunga, and Onehunga had nothing in the way of relaxed beer garden bars to chill at. A quick google search came back with The Zookeeper's Son, and off we went. The beer was cold, the sides were quickly served and the mid-afternoon sun was sitting just right for us to have a bit of a winter sunbathe. My next trip to The Zookeeper's Son was with a couple of Americans who had been foolishly trying to figure out the best New Zealand beers on their own. They bought Tui because it said it was an IPA. Woof. The Zookeeper bartender was extremely helpful with the yanks - told them what he liked, ascertained what they liked, and then came up with a beer they would enjoy drinking. It was a hit! As for the decor, this place is a bit like all of the other bars owned by The New Zealand Pub Company (like the Elephant Wrestler on the Shore, which is decked out similarly to this place). The cheesiness of a themed bar often elicits a groan out of me, but the New Zealand Pub Company does it with enough camp that I'll let them get away with it.

Banque Oyster Bar & Eatery - raw Kaipara Oyster is stunning i've ever had

Staff are very friendly and loved to help you with your good selection if you get stuck because of their variety! Oysters were fresh, wine was nice, food was beautifully presented and delicious! Although it said it was small but we find that reasonable to share between three of us for three small plates and a pizza. We also ordered some oysters. We will definitely go back there again. =)

The inside is totally not what you expect. Don't be put off from this place, because its in Remuera and gives that upperclass vibe. The inside of Banque, is totally comforting and relaxing. Theres wonderful warm decor and an inside fire. Its a great place to have lunch or dinner with a glass of wine. My dining partner and I went for a quiet Friday lunch. Banque's menu is designed for sharing. The menu has a slight Asian flavour. I would def recommend having the Bluff oysters and diamond shell clams. They were served with a delicious dipping sauce. Obviously Bluff oysters are only served to season, so if you have the chance to eat them, try them! I wouldn't normally order any kind of pizza, but seeing it was a pizza bread it was a good choice for a filler, but tbh it was really tasty. The dough was super soft and flavour was great. The other two dishes were just a bit bland and lacked the same flavour excitement as the other dishes. I would recommend for Banque to just add more flavour to the ribs instead of just covering them in hoisin sauce. Although i think its a great idea serving lamb ribs as its pretty rare on other restaurant menus. Service was great, lovely guy who served us and I think i may have even tipped him. Would def recommend coming here, for good food, great atmosphere and service. Also good value for money, but Banque features in the Entertainment book if you want a good deal.
